Ah! The irony of it all. This Corvette as with All the corvettes produced between 1974 through 1995 were designed to create Bandits, and Desperados. Todays times [2022] are very similar to the Jimmy Carter years as the president of the United States.Just prior to The Carter years, America was rolling with 55 to 65 limits east of Ohio, and 70 mph. speed limits in the flyover States. Everybody that was a driver drove 10 15 mph over. Every automobile manufacturer, had their own brand of muscle cars and we were living in high horsepower and speed heaven, and gasoline was selling for under twenty five cents a gallon. In the midwest, the gas stations were constantly battling for more sales and we called it gas price wars. The prices fluctuated around 12 to 14 cents up to 17.9 to 19.9 cents per gallon. In 1969, returning home from Vietnam, I traded my '60 Chevy Impala ( inline 6 ) +$800 for a '65 Dodge 4door ex Florida State highway patrol pursuit car with the 426 wedge. Ultimate sleeper, and you know I could dominate most any car ,regardless of the mods without breaking a sweat. One of my favorite machines, dependable and never let me down.. Comes Jimmy Carter in 1974 with a MANDATED (remember this evil word that breeds corruption) nationwide 55 mph speed limit coast to coast, and border to border. FIFTY-FIVE MPH LIMIT!! This mandate was only supposed to remain in effect until our fuel crisis stabilized. In mid to late '70s many stations were closing, couldn't get deliveries of fuels ,land the governments set up even/odd days-depending on license plates or birth date .Funny but today's times and crisis seems very familiar to the Carter era. So, back to my original story of the birth of that beautiful 1991 Callaway Speedster. It was born into a corrupt RADAR GUN WORLD. THE SPEED LIMIT WAS STILL 55 MPH. ALL Corvettes were ILLEGAL from 1974 until 1995, and the reason I say this is- if they were LEGAL, the cruise control or speed limiters would have limited the vehicles [not just the Corvette-all motor vehicles] To only reach a maximum speed of about 62 mph, but the corrupt radar cops could and did write speeding tickets on the Interstates and US highways for 56-57-58-59-60miles per hour over limit. (this is the mandate corruption) every cop in America and in every Podunk Crossroad hamlet was issued a(((((((((((((((((((((( RADAR GUN))))))))))))))))))))))))))THESE RADAR cops raked in billions of dollars stolen from the driving public, and literally some would drive from their little communities out to the Interstates, and they kept a couple of miles of the grassy median worn down to the dirt from Flip Flopping, east bounder speed ticket, oops! Flip west bounder speed ticket, oops , oops, oops -ah, call it a hard day cherry pickin' got my quota, 'n I'm goin' fishin' .THE CARTER MANDATED SPEED LIMIT WAS A SHAM AND A CASH COW FOR MANY SMALL/AND LARGE METROPOLISES AS THE MUNICIPALITIES MADE SURE THE RADAR SPEED COPS BROUGHT HOME THE BACON. This led to the 55 mandate lasting a full twenty years, as it should've ended once the fuel crisis was over, in about 1978. My '86 C4 TPI coupe, was illegal as all get out when it hit the streets in late November of 1985. With the Fifty Five mph . 1ST 45**2nd95**3rd135**4th to the Buck-50 Club and beyond .So, I could never have ran my car out to its limit in 2nd gear in 1986 without breaking the law.. Final point. If a family 4 door sedan car is approved by the government agencies regarding safety regulations and fuel/smog criteria, and that vehicles SPEEDO reads 180 or 200mph, and its proven through testing that the vehiclel will cruise all day/night long at 154 miles per hour yet the posted speed limit is 95 mph( as Texas, Arizona), if there's no speed limiters on the car then is the VEHICLE or the posted SPEED LIMIT illegal? I'm 74 & still LOVE SPEED! Would love to break in that Callaway Speedster😱
