this is probably my favourite episode of all time Delenn's arrival and little speech still gives me butterflies "only one human has ever survived battle with the Mimbari, he is behind me you are in front of me. If you value your lives be somewhere else" one of the best quote's in the whole series
For me personally the most shocking moment of this episode was ISN being shut down and the journalist true to his ambitions and beliefs as his last official act, knowing full well that he could be killed for it, stepped in and starting telling as much of the truth as he could. Every time I rewatch this episode I keep thinking of what a powerful moment this is and what great acting by the actors playing the journalists. Obviously everyone loves the last moment of Delenn coming in to save the day, but her talking to the Grey Council and to that acolyte impresses me even more. Mira Furlan had her anger for the UN and NATO in her heart when she spoke those lines, since she was among the refugees from Yugoslavia. Great episode, great lines, great everything.
This thing literally happened in Vilnius, Lithuanian in 1991 Jan13. When Russian troops were taking over newly independant states TV station. Journalist were sitting inside studio live translating until soldiers literally started breaking doors.
This episode won the Hugo Award for that year, made all the more impressive when its competition included "Independence Day," "Star Trek: First Contact," and the Deep Space Nine episode "Trials and Tribble-ations."
Often mentioned but Jerry Doyle fell and broke him arm during the brawl. While waiting for the ambulance to arrive, Doyle shot the scene with Zack helping him down. The pain you see in his face is real. This scene may have been sprung from a moment of serendipitous bad luck, but it is one of my favorites. Seeing Garibaldi almost completely helpless with Zach reassuring him is a realistic outcome. He could have been killed, he definitely got injured. The hero doesn't always walk out unscathed in real life.
Also worht mentioning, he was driven to the hospital (or taken from, after beingdischarged, don't remember) by a staffer who happened to be an ex-con. That was recognized by cops chilling out in the parking lot. They thought Doyle wass an assault victim and starting arresting the staffer. It didn't help that Doyle was so out of it dueto pain meds that he was making things worse. It must've been an interesting scene.
One of the great classics of the show (not the only one, to be sure, you have more to come). But it really is the kind of episode which shows how great B5 is and the plan JMS had for the show.
After she read the script for the speech to the Gray Council, Mira asked Joe, "So how long do you live in Yugoslavia?" That's where she was from and took that speech really personally because "the affairs of others are not our concern" is basically what the UN said about the conflict in her country.
And for what made this episode stand out, I think it's the best episode of the series. I have to say just how Sheridan reacted to the situation: really great respect for Sheridan and also the moments with Delenn and the Earth Alliance Ships was really respect
With their shoe string budget and pushing the 'toasters' they had to their limits, they were rendering the CGI battle right up until the last possible minute they had to put things together and send off for broadcast. They had intended to show more of what Hiroshi was doing in the battle (taking on the smaller cruisers and the Roanoke), but ended up having to leave it out to get the episode finished. Consequently, it's not completely clear from the hecticness of the battle, but she took on the brunt of the pro-Clark forces. I always wished she had survived; incredible captain.
Absolutely one of the TOP episodes of B 5 - without a doubt Well, you've made it through "the big 3" and you reacted pretty much like I figured you would! This episode was a real mess in a lot of ways- Hague- theres a blooper reel clip that explains what happened there. Major Ryan- JMS had a completely different actor in mind (Everett McGill) but couldn't remember his first name- so he told the casting director "Get McGill"- the casting director thought he meant Bruce McGill, and JMS didn't find out until he was already in wardrobe and ready to shoot Grey Council scene- Mira Furlan sounds very frustrated and aggrevated- she wasn't completely acting. They had to shoot it something like 10 times due to her not being able to break the staff prop ISN newscast- they rehearsed it straight - without effects etc. The director didn't tell the actors about the explosions and debris. Also the stage hand didn't understand that he was supposed to throw the "debris" near them- instead he threw it at them This led to their shocked reactions The battle scenes- In the C and C the pyro charge was just supposed spit out a bunch of sparks and smoke. It did, but also caught the C and C set on fire. It was luck that the guy putting it out was in costume Garibaldi fight scene- Yes, Garibaldi looks to be in a lot of pain- Jerry Doyle wasn't acting. During the first shot, a stuntman was to go to his right- instead went left- Jerry tripped over him and broke his right wrist. He insisted they finish the scene instead of going to the hospital. In the process of shooting the final scene, he tripped again- this time breaking his right forearm! So when you see Zach helping him down, he's really hurting The space battle- lots of "problems" with that - disappearing ships, the same ship being destroyed 3 times, etc etc. They finished the effects literally 2 hrs before the episode had to be delivered for the satellite feed, so no one caught it
The actor who played General Hague was double-booked by his agent to do an episode of Deep Space Nine, thus he was written out. When casting a replacement (to play General Ryan), JMS said "get that McGill guy". But he MEANT Everett McGill, from the movie Dune. What he got was Bruce McGill, who played D-Day in the movie Animal House. It worked out. :)
Widely considered (one of) the BEST episode of the series! With the "UNQUESTIONABLY" BEST line in the series! (can't believe you edited it OUT) To use a metaphor those of us old enough to remember "manual transmission" cars. will understand; THIS is the episode the show SHIFTED into the NEXT HIGHER gear! (and you can tell)
Great to se you get to this one. Yet another great episode. I love the word play in this: "Mars has rejected martial law" (Mars, the god of war in Roman mythology) Oh, Delenn! The intensity. Mira Furlan's acting is perfect in this episode. It's always great, but here it shines the brightest. These last three episodes are like one movie. Last frame of one goes right into the first frame of the next. To me, this is the finest 3-episode part of any series I have seen.
The Grey Council scene with Delenn was meant to be a single shot - no camera cuts or edits. But when she tried to break the (pre-weakened) staff, it wouldn't break. So they had to cut, weaken the staff some more, and shoot again from that point forward.
Delenn to her aide when he first met her, "I cannot have an aide who will not look up, you will forever be walking into things!" Now he looks up to her and in the eye. Ducat to his aid, Delenn, "I cannot have an aide... yeah she's going to 'talk' to the Grey Council, but not eyes down.
Unfortunately with Hague, the actor who played him "defected" to "the other space station series" that was on at the time (he chose to take a guest star role in two episodes of Star Trek instead of a potential recurring role in B5. Major irony, the character he ends up playing in Star Trek does his best to institute a totalitarian military rule on Earth).
@@sdfried4877 I like the thought process, but from what I've heard there was plans for Hague to be more involved in the Earth Civil War but things got turned around because of the actor taking the Star Trek role. At least that was the impression I got.
At the time probably the most expensive special effects wise, space battle ever. Until DS 9 Sacrifice of Angels. But Severed Dreams has heart beyond, protect the Defiant, Delta 2... JMS is a great writer, when this was made we talke every ep on IRC (internet relay chat) what you now use for sms (text messages) through programs like mIRC that let us talk to the show runners like JMS in real time and because of that I think this show is eternal, not just him talking to us, but feedback from us. blah blah blah that's all I got to say about watching BAbylon 5 in real time on TV don't even own a TV now.
The comparisons with this season and current events give me that sick feeling in the stomach, like you've seen something horrible and know you're gonna have to see it again.
For all their political blindness, the captains of the Earthforce destroyers would know they are massively outgunned by 3 Minbari Warcruisers and a ships they don't fully recognise (they'd have a silhouette of the Whitestar from the Jupiter mission but wouldn't know anything about it).
Um since you brought it up, the Minbari have been in the Shadow War before, but remember what you were saying about some of Earth being corrupted by the Shadows, you don't think some of the Minbari could be. It's apparent to me they are, but I've seen the whole series, not like Londo Mollari is but in a way. Not to follow the prophesy or Vorlons any more?
General Hague was killed off largely because the actor, Robert Foxworth, went over to Star Trek for a role. JMS can be a bit vindictive. Major Ryan was supposed to be played by Everett McGill; however, someone in casting misheard the name, causing the part to be played by Bruce McGill - who did a fantastic job nevertheless. Finally, Sheridan's father was played by Rance Howard, father of none other than famed director and child actor Ron Howard.
YHou think the Shadows believe that? or the Vorlons? or the Minbari? The Centauri don't think humans are more than apes, so they don't. In the end, war is what humans do, but usually better at if we're attacked and not the agressor. We can be um very bad foes if attacked.
All them omega cruisedrs what 3/4 a mile long, babylon 5 is 5 miles long, the miles not responsible for the name. Cortez explorer class shit also 5 miles long. Humans were making some big ass ships at that time. The collision of two Omega Class Cruisers, even at right angles was under-rated as in energy of mass. And Ivanova need to extract her head from her ass, she almost bit it.
The breaking of the council never made sense to me, five members left with Delenn which means they had the majority anyway, couldn't they have simply voted and keep the council intact?
The remaining members of the Grey Council were all Warrior Caste. I doubt very much that two-thirds of Minibari society would have simply tolerated being ruled solely by the Warrior Caste.
Londo will spend the rest of his life seeking redemption. More I won't say. Oh no, you didn't show DeLenn's speech to the Earth ships. A moment to raise the hair on your arms.
this is probably my favourite episode of all time Delenn's arrival and little speech still gives me butterflies "only one human has ever survived battle with the Mimbari, he is behind me you are in front of me. If you value your lives be somewhere else" one of the best quote's in the whole series

It's amazing how resonant that section still is - there were a few Russian broadcasters who made their feelings about the Ukraine invasion clear
