  • Clover will hardly air dry for hay! So instead of burning the barn down let’s just make a haystack and cure it with salt!

Hangin Out With Stan makes pickled okra and eggs, Michael McGie makes pickled hay lol. I've never heard of pickled hay. But you're a very smart man and I'm impressed with your knowledge.
I never knew green hay could burn a barn down. Back in the 1980's and 90's I had a 714 acre ranch with a new barn I built. That first year I put 4,400 green square bales in it. It was hot but thank God it didn't burn.

Never heard about pickling hay before. Very interesting. The water should run off that stack very nicely. We never covered our stacks either when we use to put up loose hay. Of course a lot of them were 30-40 yards long, but we would go up top with a pitch fork and round them off. Surprising how well they would shed off the water. Nice job Brother!

This is so neat, never thought about "pickling" hay. I may have to try that next year. Did you end up covering it, how did it turn out?

    • @McGieHomesteadAdventures

I didn’t cover it…. It didn’t look good but my pigs ate every last bite of it!

The salt immediately cools the hay if it is beginning to heat up and draws the salt into the stem which preserves it and makes it delicious

40 years ago my dad used to chop alfalfa and blow it in a large barn hay loft . They would also salt the hay. Always thought the barn would burn one day but didn't.
Instead 100 round bales caught fire stored out in the field. Lol

      Yes they did!
In my opinion salting square bales in the barn worked better……. But definitely more work!

I'm interested to see if this works! Your local grain elevator should have mixing salt for super cheap. We get it at $6 per 50lbs.

I wonder if instead of water softener pellets why couldn’t you use a 50 lb bag of mineral which is heavy in salt mineral
