🙂 Some very good pectoral advice on buying an older generation of Rolls_Royce vehicle. The best thing to remember and know about these cars is .Their is no such thing as a cheap Rolls_Royce or Bentley, then and now!. They are always going to be expensive to run and maintain...I myself own a late mark IV Silver Spirit 1996- 1997.144 units built..............

Great video, loads of detail. The wheels did get a bit bigger over the years so they're not all 15" ones, my '96 Turbo R has 17" ones, 255/55. Absolutely right about tyres though, I've got the Avons on mine, people cheaping out and putting off-roader tyres on are probably cutting other corners and that can end in disaster on these cars.

15:20 the tires on this car are done. Completely weather-checked and dry rotted. I'd be way more concerned about that instead of what brand they are.

@@raenzoperformance9600 Thank you mate! I look forward to more R-R videos very much, very informative. Cost here in Australia is roughly the same, but our offerings seem "tired" and ill-cared-for compared to examples in England. I have been a passenger in a Spirit, but never the driver. Airport Transfers in Hong Kong to/from the Peninsular Hotel as you would know, is via the signature Green Rolls-Royces, they are much newer models now of course, but this was back in the 80s/90s when I traveled for work haha. Very good advice and review, these cars are fabulous to drive and to look at, the issue of the spring cups was well explained and an important item on the car that can cause problems.
The other issue to look out for is brake pipes, can fail without any warning so double check especially on older models.
Head gasket replacement expensive, and once again can go with little or no warning, any car with over 60k miles, service/maintenance history needs to be checked for this issue.
Flying Spares are a great team and more than helpful for parts and advice.

If the mascot is lifted and the plate pushed down it will release and drop into the grill sometimes just moving the mascot to the side will drop it down its a safety device to stop injury i believe. You can buy a lockable cover for it from flyingspares.com for 125 quid so once the mascot has dropped into the grill the cover will fit onto the recess in the grill and lock it. I used to have one on a rr i had with a everflex roof but sold that car years ago

  • @jonermartin

You’re dead right about head gasket failure on later cars. I have a 96 Spirit and head gaskets failed at about 60k during an MOT. Cost 6k to get repaired then they failed again, but were thankfully replaced under warranty. Now need some bodywork done as the wheel arches have started to bubble. Latest issue? … some idiot stole my spirit of ecstasy- refurbished replacement a mere £650 +vat! Running one of these is uber expensive unless you’ve got the know-how/facilities to diy.

But i will say i did own a seraph for about 5 years it was a nice car it has all the bmw running gear the 5.4 engine shares the characteristics of the 7 series i had a few issues with mine so i moved it on so wasnt the best experience they suffer coil pack failing quite often and the battery sitiation isnt great it had 2 batteries starter and auxillary if one is a little low it will fail to start, the system is to prevent no start situations but due to the setup being not so thought out it suffers some issues i have been left on fuel station car parks waiting hours for it to suddenly change its mind and start up. Might have just been mine wasnt great but just sharing my experience overall the drive isnt great either there quite heavy to drive but if you can find a nice one with a good warranty give it a go all the best

Helpful review but there is lots this review doesn't cover.Tapping on cold start for up to 2 or 5 minutes can be the brake pumps until up to pressure that sounds like lifters & is normal . Best model years are 20000 series Between 1987- 89. 1990 & newer are much more complicated & have lots more that costs LOTS to fix when things go wrong. Alarm system battery & ecu failure, Air bag clock springs & seat belt sensors in later cars, Active ride & Climate control systems that require a Rolls-Royce "Test box" to analyse any problems. 1990 & newer wiring diagram is 3 times the size of 1989 & back should tell you something .1989 has lots of things that can be fixed or repaired as they are more analog. 1994 & newer Zytek F.I. is not as easy to work on or as reliable as Bosch CIS. 1997 & newer suffer fuel rail "O" ring failure that will ruin your wallet & this issue is not IF it will happen but WHEN. Newer cars just have WAY too much electronics & other issues. I've had 6 SZ since 2000 & my 89 Bentley Turbo RL is by far my favorite. Do LOTS or homework before purchase. These are a wonderful special cars just don't get a neglected POS! Sorry to have gone on so long! Good luck. Terry in Canada.

@@raenzoperformance9600 I've spent many years within the official Rolls-Royce/Bentley network and was technical manager for the world's only ever appointed coachbuilder where often had 90 cars with us at any one time. That role took me across the world so yes, I do know quite a bit about them. Oh, I also own four Crewe built cars currently.
The date of registration does not relate to the spec of the car. The 1988 spec car is released in 1987, 1990 spec cars (Spirit II) were released in 1989. Your car lacks some of the details of the upgraded 1988 car. Cars were ordered months in advance so delivery of an earlier spec car can easily take place in the next year registration. Some orders were cancelled meaning the dealer would still be obliged to take the car that they would then have to find a buyer for, that's a difficult sell if later spec cars have been released because who would want the older one?
