They ought to do a box that like they did for the Beatles in 2009 for the stereo or mono mixes and release all the albums in whatever format they came in
For vinyl, I’ve been slowly collecting the individual Mono and Stereo releases released by Analog Productions PLUS the BB’s 2012 CD Mono / Stereo releases. Only 12 albums released in that configuration, but .. well-worth it.
@@NoMoreHeroesPunkPostPunk I’ve been collecting the Analogue Productions SACD BB releases. I don’t have an SACD player, so I just listen to the redbook CD layer, but have been really happy with the way they sound. I like that they include both the stereo and mono versions for the albums. It would be cool to have all of the vinyl versions as well!
"The Beach Boys" 1985 was the first CD I ever bought. I didn't have a player and it was ludicrously expensive, but I had to buy it because it's the Beach Boys, so it would obviously be sold out quickly, lol.
The two-fers were great! Such a good way to build a Beach Boys library quickly! Love the sample CD you have. I know many of the bigger sets had CD samplers too. A very interesting way to enjoy and encapsulate a box set into something you could enjoy in one quick sitting. And I agree 100% that the 2012 CD releases were very confusing. I think you named them all though.
Fun reliving all the CDs I bought (and sold, or replaced, or upgraded, through the years), For me, the best release was the GOOD VIBRATIONS box-set, because never before had we gotten so many rare tracks at once in such terrific sound. Love the follow-up box-sets, but that first one was an eye-and-ear opener!
Carl And The Passions & Holland are being released, in a two album set (on cd), on December 2, 2022. The set is titled "Sail On Sailor" and each album is on its own cd with a multitude of bonus tracks. These are new 2022 remasters but I don't know if any of the original artwork will be included. It's on Amazon, for about $30. A lot of pre-orders, I think because my delivery date is not until December 7. Just thought you'd want to know.
I have a few twofer CDs including Smiley Smile/Wild Honey and Friends/20/20, both with bonus tracks. I’d have too look at the CDs to see when they were released.
Great video Giggens! A really interesting topic! The 2015/2016 hybrid SACD BB’s releases by Analogue Productions are really good sounding. I just listen to the CD layer because I don’t have an SACD player, but the CD layer sounds great! The twofers with the bonus tracks were really cool when they came out. I wish they were still all in print!
I've been hunting for the Holland one for awhile but it remains super expensive to buy (even second hand.) Not as the 2 LP set though. I just really want to hear their mix of "We Got Love."
Great overview, but it would be great to mention that the two-fers and the original mono CD of "Pet Sounds" used liberal amounts of Sonic Solutions' NoNoise process which made the sound quality really bad compared to the later two-fer reissues and the remasterings of "Pet Sounds." The later releases which didn't get treated to NoNoise sound so, so, SO much better. Basically any release after the "Pet Sounds" box are less battered with needless noise reduction.
Cool vid. I was so happy earlier this year when I ran across a copy of Made in USA on CD at a thrift store for 4 bucks. It was great to finally have a physical copy of Rock and Roll To The Rescue. This compilation was an important release to me because it really helped to turn me into the super fan I am today when I bought it on cassette in the early 90s.
Mixed feelings on the twofers as a concept; very practical way to get the album, but it doesn't quite give each album the respect it deserves - starting an album at track 11 and sharing cover art.
Hi Giggens, The Beach boys give my soul life and helps me soar when I am not too much in a good frame of mind. Pet Sounds should be considered an antidote to depression. Dennis Wilson POB is a desert island disc. Special album. Majestic is putting it lightly. Thank you for keeping the Beach boys alive
Pet Sounds is the junk food, kleenex and hooch you could use when you're depressed :) When you don't want to or have someone to talk about your problems with, Pet Sounds
You didn't mention the Capital U.S. Singles Collection !962-1965. A real nice collection of BB singles with original picture sleeves. If you can still find it it is worth it.
I remember there was a publication called (IIRC) CD Review which waxed absolutely rhapsodic about the 1985 Beach Boys CD, which was a DDD release, saying the sound was all but 3D. I eventually got the CD, and I was also rather floored by the sound, but not all the songs.
I had totally forgotten about the 1994 single CDs - at the time, they seemed like a ripoff, having just bought the twofers. But it is definitely nice to have back cover artwork. I wonder if these are collectible now.
I love playing my Ultimate Christmas CD at this time of year. More fool the record company for rejecting the second Christmas album. I love Dennis's Morning Christmas that would have been on that album.
Gig. Great great Topic! There was a 1991 2fer of BB concert 64/Live in London with bonus tracks, if I misheard you. Forgive me. Yes I loved seeing the beach boys reissues since Pet Sounds in 1990. I bought Smiley smile/Wild Honey on cassette and it blew my mind totally. I got the Caribou reissue of Holland in 1991 which also tore me up. In 92 I found Sunflower reissue on Cassette and I didn't like it🙄. It seemed too happy and schmaltz. The way Brian described this whole world in his 91 bio book made me think this whole world would sound like another "Surfs up". I was surprised to hear an upbeat track instead😃
Here's a little off-the-wall notice I did around 1990. I was in the former Tower Records in Hollywood, and saw where Capital Records had re-issued both "The Beach Boys Today!" and "Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!)" on vinyl. However, the re-issued of "Today..." was missing a couple of tracks (including "Bull Session..."), and had the commentary from Dick Clark on the back missing. So, in other words, it was an abbreviated reissue. I believe "Summer Days..." was abbreviated, as well. But I spent more time looking at "Today." No, I didn't buy it. I was miffed at Capital for making it unavailable, due to what I later discovered were royalty issues. Capital took out some of their best albums. In order to listen to "Today", I had to borrow it from a friend. But by 1990, I had already found a used (and decent) copy of it in a used record store. Giggens, I know you're referencing CD's in your posting. But you were discussing rare Beach Boys materials, and I know you were talking CD's. Long way of asking...are you aware of Capital's reissuing (in truncated form) of those two classic Beach Boys albums in 1990? Thank you.
Very interesting. I got their tapes when I was a kid in the early 80s. One of those tapes is called "Surf's Up" but it's not the album Surf's Up. Why would they put out a compilation of hits with an existing album title? This has been done a couple times.
I'm a real sucker for CDs that feature recreations of original labels on the discs, especially those of Elvis Presley with the orange RCA label from the 1970s.
I always think The Beach Boys catalogs are released in messy ways as compared to how the Beatles or Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin catalogs are treated properly and with care.
Sadly the mastering on the second gen twofer CDs isn't great, they're borderline brickwalled. If you want a good Beach Boys CD collection I recommend for the 60's albums a mix of the Japanese Pastmasters reissues, MFSL reissues and the first gen twofers and for the 70's - early 80's albums the Caribou CDs.

Same here! This CD and the Brian Wilson CD were the first CD's I ever purchased. Played the hell out of them on my walkman

I also have the Beach Boys singles collection on CD. And then there's the Made In California set which is a really great set as well.

All of pre-Pet Sounds albums were issued that way in the 80s. I didn't buy them.
Hey Chris! Yeah in the late 70s well into the 80s, they sold those abridged versions of those albums
It's so hard to find their studio albums on cd! Except for Pet sounds that is! I have 3 2-fers all found at used stores, lucky finds!
They're pretty much all available on Amazon.

I have most..but now I have to go look for those I didn't know I was missing until now..thanks..I think..take care
Great collection!! Loved the video as always giggens

I have 90% of these, but I better get moving on the rest of my collection before they are no longer available at decent prices. Take care
Outstanding!

what were those extra tracks on the today ans sdasn twofer?
A studio version of Graduation Day, Little Girl I Once Knew and I think something else, can't remember!
