Calling for a stop to nicknames screams of Ivory Tower Syndrome to me. Yeah it can have some bad side effects, but outreach is far more important than many might think. If we had a specimen labeled "AMNH-16777", even experts would find using that exact name unwieldy in casual conversation and I guarantee you we'd have PhD holders referring to it as "777" or "Triple7" or some other title.
And it is a little silly to claim that it "anthropomorphizes" the dinosaurs. I mean we name our pets, so why not name a dinosaur? If they were alive today I am sure we would give them names in that situation too.
The thing to me is that anthropomorphizing appears to be almost universal for humans. Of course, it's impossible to tell if something is truly universal or simply cultural, but still, regardless of culture we have been known to "humanize" animals, deities, anything really... Perhaps "humanizing" something is simply how we are able to imagine it as a real presence in our minds. That, of course, leaves a lot of wiggle room since "humanizing" will mean different things to different people, but if that is the case than giving an easily recognizable name to something is likely pretty "basal" as paleontologist would say.
The only thing that's shitty about fossils is that we will never be able to understand fully how an ancient animal looked while living and breathing... Just thinking of skull-shapes of today's modern fauna and their living counterparts leads me to believe that Dinosaurs may have had many, many features in life that would guarantee to surprise us. I'd give quite a lot to be able to go back and (safely) observe any of these animals in their natural time and habitats.
Yea like how peacocks have giant tail feathers, or elephants have trunks, or strange sounds that birds make, or rattle snakes have a rattle, it goes on and on
I personally think the curvy horns would a unique to the group Yoshi's Trike since there wouldn't be a reason for species such as Triceratops prorsus to have them as their horns curved downwards. Although, Triceratops horridus could also have the curvy horns since they could use it as a major defense against T.Rex, however the curvy horns may just be unique to the transitional individuals from horridus to prorsus as I stated above. Tbh, the real life animals are more interesting than movie animals because there is so much mystery that we have to figure out using what we have as well as infer what would, could and should happen about various topics.
Yoshi is a Dinosaur from Super Mario Games, hence the Name "Yoshisaur Munchakoopas". And Tracey is ALSO the Same Yoshi as Before, except it's a Triceratops because of "Yoshi's Trike".
Fossils don't need to be named for me to deify them. I know they were just animals, but even modern day creatures, like hyenas, mantas, and crocodilians, leave me speechless with their beauty.
As someone that doesn't have a degree in paleontology, but does spend a lot of time studying dinosaurs, especially ceratopsians, I agree with you that the extremely curved spine comes off as strange and am curious as to why it was mounted this way. Though I will also admit that it is not the first time I have seen a reconstruction of this kind.
Actually he may have grown into his horns, it common for young animals to be lanky or lack proportion then grow into their proper sizes. Its possible that triceratops horns grow at different speeds during different times in their lives. Or maybe he just had more big Horn energy than all the other dinos.
Naming a fossil is like naming a pet, wtf people so mad about? When you got cartoons with talking dinosaurs and shit like JP/JW. Nah, lets be mad we called this fossil Big Al.
no one would care about the life of injured w5438(fake name) but we care about the life of big al because it has a name, And obviously also big al is very well known from the BBC documentary about him so and this helps fossils by getting public outcry if someone wants to take him into private hands like a Russian billionaire.
You're right about the posture - the hunched back and dragging tail are considered inaccurate. These reconstructions look outdated, we know today that ceratopsians had hips parallel to the ground, which means the tail was held horizontally as well and... well, it only makes sense.
Exactly, it’s not like they are saying “This is Bob the Stegosaurus, he likes to have his plates scratched and naps on the sofa.” It’s more just a convenient tag, rather than projecting a personality onto the bones. You’d have to have a femur up your ass to get pissed at someone giving a fossil a nickname.
The horns and shields of trikes have always been in discussion of defense vs display. Then there's the tremendous bulk and apparent speed. But I've often wondered about something never mentioned: it's bite. I would think it could crush any part of a raptor's body it could reach (arms, legs, feet, tail) and might even do terrible damage to a t. rex. Pure speculation. Your thoughts?
Nice video. As you said the spine of Yoshi does look too big. Im not a triceratops expert but am just a kid who has always been fascinated with dinosaurs but I did too notice it’s back.
9:50 I like that you point out the transition within one genus. I wish, that would be done on a regulary base with other dinosaur families. Would like to see that done with allosaurs and tyrannosaurs. I mean they existed over several million years. Can't be just one species.
Great video. That is one cool ceratopsian. I guess horns would of gotten bigger as the Triceratops grew. Nice art work. Where can I get the toy version and will they make a skeleton version.
I imagine that their horns curved upwards so as to not hurt each other if they tried to spar at younger ages, as well as to give a physical indication to other males to perhaps determine packing order. A more speculative speculation is that being shorter required the horns to point higher to defend against large predators like T. rex.
If This was Actually a Super Mario Reference, Yoshi would be the Same Dinosaur as in Games... except with the Introduction of Tracey (His Trike!). And If I was Right, Tracey's Full name is "Tracey the Triceratops" and Yoshi's Full name is "Yoshisaur Munchakoopas". Also, Tracey has a Friend capable of Flying over the Gaps. It's a Pterodactyl named "Teron", because his Full Name is "Teron the Pterodactyl" also.

I think nicknaming and even anthropomorphizing fossils can be very important to destroy that old view we have of dinosaurs being primitive murder beasts. It's because of this view that we have people complaining about the new dinosaurs because, in their heads, dinos are monsters whose only purpose is being scary in movies so they should have scaly skin and exposed teeth. Anthropomorphizing them makes them seem more like what they actually were, living, breathing animals, organisms just as complex as us, with complex behaviors and even complex relationships. A fossil isn't a representation of a fictional monster, but the remains of an individual that was born, grew up, felt pain, hunger, reproduced, hunted, was hunted, struggled and thrived, then eventually died. Giving them names reinforces the idea of being the remains of individuals rather than a representation of a species carved from a piece of rock.
How about this ideal name for this Trike species I came up with? "Triceratops Yoshii", meaning (Yoshi's Three-horned face). An animal named after its discoverer Yoshi Katsura.

I also have to bring this up, but do people still think Torosaurus and Triceratops are the same species? Because I know they are not. But I just need somebody to confirm this for me.
Is it possible if the horns were too long, yoshi could've gotten stuck on something which caused it's death? This sometimes happens to cattle and deer with overly large horns.

Why would the older Hell's Creek Triceratops specimens have longer brow horns and shorter nose horns and the newer Hell's Creek Triceratops specimens have shorter brow horns and longer nose horns as time went on though? I would expect all of their horns to grow longer over time because Tyrannosaurus rex became ever more deadly as time went on (from everything I found anyways)?
There is no apparent reason. Could've been sexual selection. Trex didn't get deadlier over time, it didn't change that much within the last 1 or so million years before the kpg extinction. The primary use of trike horns was probably nor defense anyway.
