Same here. It made me realize you can improve your cat's diet even if you're on a tight budget. I switched one meal a day to wet. I'll do half a can with a little extra water mixed in. Splitting a can of the cheap wet foods, it's literally only 30 cents more per day. I've already noticed my cat urinating twice a day instead of once, and her poops are less gross lol. "Don't let perfect be the enemy of good." I love Jackson's videos!

worst wet food usually does not have meat in it at all; thus, worsening digestion system of a cat. And even it has any 'meat', it is not meat, it is feathers, claws etc. And I agree that feeding a cat with dry food only is not good for health. For example, I divide the daily portion into 2 parts: dry holistic and good wet food + meat sticks 2 times a week. Our vet doctor says this approach is good, so I keep it. Of course, fresh water in several places in the house.

That's an excellent suggestion. Not just canned, but raw as well. I'm interested in raw but concerned about contamination if it thaws out somewhere in the transportation process. My vet said she's had several cases of a cat getting sick from bad raw. They've been domesticated long enough that they don't have the ability to fight off e-colli and other bacteria as their wild relatives do.

The comment about cats reversing diabetes by changing to wet food is absolutely accurate! I had a cat 20 yrs ago who was diagnosed with diabetes at age 10. I got her off the dry food immediately and switched her to a wet food diet with very very low carbs…we got her blood sugars down to normal levels and got her insulin down to 1/2 unit once a day from 3 units 2x a day. That was the only change… I also tested her using a human glucometer to only give her insulin when she really needed it and in the amount she actually needed versus just blindly shooting her up 2x a day as the vets would have had me do back then. Also my old vet was trying to get her to switch to hills science diet DM dry food. When I looked- the carb levels were as high as the original kibble I was feeding her and the ingredients list was terrible, so I didn’t change her diet to what they were recommending. I managed her diabetes until she passed at age 16 1/2 not from diabetes. Thank you for this awesome video. I wish back when I first had my kitty that I knew then what I know now about food…

A good tip for people looking at "what food to get" is to look at what country the food was produced in. Singapore, New Zealand, Canada all have higher restrictions for the quality of ingredients put into their food. That's not to say all US brands are terrible but it is something that can definitely help narrow it down.

I was under the misconception that my kittens NEEDED dry food, I'd mix small portions of "healthy" dry food with wet food. My cats had snubbed dry food, I had to mix it in with their wet food and worried when they were hardly eating it. My cats are now fully off dry food. I'm glad I saw Jackson's videos to verify that dry food wasn't needed at all.

yes this is unfortunately because veterinarians aren't nutritionists and when they go through schooling, their textbooks say things like, "for this we recommend Science Diet for ___ disease." So, they go on to recommend what they learn...from the corporations that funds their schooling. Bad system capitalism set up. human and animal lives get sacrificed.

A cat I had got crystals in his urine. Had to have emergency surgery--cost me an arm and a leg. I was told at the time to switch him to a prescription diet, which was also dry. (Amazing, this is what they prescribe.) I did my own reading. Padfoot thought raw was poisoning him, so I ended up feeding him a good quality canned, and he never had a return of the crystals (they are said to be more likely to get after getting once). If Jackson reads this, I think it would be good for him to talk about how they use these prescription diets. From what I understand they can be just as bad as what any other dry.

If you actually compare the ingredients list, the expensive vet dry foods are the same as what you can get in the supermarket but the vet foods are twice the price. Not everyone has the time to sit and compare or knows what all these things mean, so it's great for someone like Galaxy to make videos on this.

This is very important!! I know a cat who had severe bladder issues. She was crying in pain every time she went to the toilet, peed everywhere and would get a UTI and bleed very often because of it. They went to several different vets, did A LOT of testing but didn’t get any answers and the vets put her on a hills urinary diet. That made her far worse than she already was. So I wanted them to try out wet or raw food. They switched to raw (mush i believe) and never had problems again!

Same here, it was never so bad that surgery was required, she'd pee a little blood but by the time we got to the vet there'd be no obstruction. Then I happened to read online that it helps to keep your cat hydrated, but she rarely drank water *sigh* ... So that was when I switched to can wet food, and the crystals *magically* went away. It's just so obvious now in hindsight, but no one said anything.

Prescription diet dry food is bad.... prescription diet wet food is okay. Not great but better than any dry food and low quality canned food. Why did I say the food is okay? Even though it contains grain, the phosphorus level is lower than other commercial canned food. You need to look at phosphorus, magnesium and sodium level when you buy cat food as these minerals can deteriorate the kidney. Avoid fish since they can cause hyperthyroid.

My twin cats have been on raw since they were kittens: they’re five years old now, sleek and extremely active. They eat two small meals a day (breakfast and dinner) but in between, they don’t want anything else. The most important thing (especially since we live in a compact condo) is that the litter rarely smells. The raw diet makes everything so much better for all of us, although it’s shocking how many vets try to push their dried foods on us. I’ve found a good vet now who is on board with the diet. Thanks for all the info, Jackson: I can now easily send it to other cat friends who don’t understand why I’m such a weirdo about the raw diet.

Thank you so much for this video series Jackson! As others have pointed out your "I'd rather your cat eat the worst wet food than the best dry food" statement was a real attention getter and it inspired us to begin removing dry food from our kittens diet.
Our kitten was 100% on board with this change and as soon as we started adding more wet food she refused to eat any more of the dry. We thought this transition would take a few weeks but ended up only being a few days. We're now about 1 week in to 100% wet and we're surprised at how many things have not only changed but changed for the better. The "zoomies" are a good example - these are now mostly right on schedule which makes them so much more enjoyable and easier to manage.

The people I adopted him from free-fed dry food and gave wet food only once in awhile as a treat. I've always been a wet food feeder and started feeding him four smaller meals of wet food throughout the day and while I've left out some dry, he's barely touched it and seems very happy with his new meal plan. I'll probably get rid of the dry altogether and just give a small treat in the evenings before bed. Food is such an important topic when it comes to cats. Last year my cat was sick for almost 2 months with a UTI and my Vet told me that it was most likely caused by her diet. Most cat food doesn't have nearly enough quality meat that cats need and companies often will add sugar to their food so that cats will get hooked on the food more easily so that owners will buy more of their product. She said that most cat food is basically equivalent to cat junk food and will cause harm to your cats health in the long run and have them develop kidney and teeth disease early on from all the sugar, additives and wheat that doesn't benefit their health. I was seriously heartbroken when i heard of these tactics that companies have, to trick owners into buying their products and ever since then switched to a brand that is only slightly more expensive, but doesn't have any additives, grain and is 68% made up of pure meat and my cats have never been better. I would rather pay a little bit more on their food beforehand, than all the bills at he vet when they come down sick, not to forget that being sick reduces the quality of your cats life and sometimes also goes unnoticed. Ever since i had that incident and learned about this, i've been actively sharing this info to all cat owners i know, because often times brands will make us feel good about buying their brand and tell us how good their product is for our pets, when in reality we're basically feeding them junk food everyday and setting them up for health issues.
So please, I know some people don't have the budget to spend a lot of money on cat food, but please try look for food that has no sugar or salt, taste enhancers, grains, conservation additives and most importantly look for a high meat percentage (at least 60%) and little to no fish- or meatmeal which is often used so they can use less meat to save money on production. It might not be possible to find a food that fits your budget and checks off all these things, but i hope you at least look at the ingredients and reflect on what you're actually feeding your cats, because it often does more harm than we expect from the way brands advertise it.
In the end tho, i guess Jackson still says it all, bad wet food is still better than good dry food.

Also a fun fact or rather tip: At the beginning your cat will generally not enjoy the new food (i mean imagine eating fast food and sweets your entire life and suddenly people are trying to introduce a plate of vegetable to you, you probably wouldn't enjoy it at first either 😂) but after a while they enjoy it and i'm not sure if you know the issue where cats will only lick the sauce of their foods and leave the meat, that issue will be solved as well since they'll usually only lick the sauce because that's the sugary part.

Love this series, can't wait for Part III, and even looking more to "How to transition your Cat from Dry to Wet Food" . As a Boomer who has always fed her cats dry, can you please answer some additional questions.
    How much to feed them?
How long you can leave the food out?
How often to feed cats based on their age? I know older kittens are every six hours, but what about mature cats?
I sleep 8 hours minimum, how does someone handle nights? if we are supposed to feed them every six hours. I don't like the idea of leaving out wet food over night to go bad.
I recently down-sized and have transitioned my cat from Indoor/Outdoor to Indoor only, and she doesn't seem interested in toys or playing. She nine years old, and now that she no longer has prey to play with , how do I get her interested in toys?

Are you going to talk about freeze-dried raw and raw meat diets? I feed my boy freeze dried raw and he absolutely loves it, the problem is my parents prefer to feed him kibble because of the convenience. I’m trying to convince them to switch to freeze dried with me.

My cats have been on a wet diet for about a month consistently now and I can already see them losing weight. So thankful for these videos!

I recently adopted 2 give year old cats from a shelter. Although they got canned food twice a day, kibble was accessible 24/7. When I brought them home I gave them some kibble, but also a variety of canned pates and meats with sauces or gravy. They totally stopped eating the kibbles by themselves. My only problem is not knowing what brands are the best and how much to feed.

This, and my cat's aversion to canned food (but constant attraction whenever I am cutting up meat) makes me want to get a recipe to make fresh organic food for my cat. Can you refer us to a recipe on one of your next videos?

Have you tried food that isn’t purée? My cat HATES purée

My cat doesn’t like pate but really likes the smooth mousse like foods that come in a pouch. They are much more expensive per serving than canned pates though.

@@GeeklingNo1 I tried the patés and the chunks too. Just hates cans I think because they taste not as fresh. If I boil meat + organs for human consumption (without salt or any spices) and give him a morsel, he is all over it. Not the can though, even if the can (i.e. Almo nature) has exactly the same thing. I tasted a little of his food myself (all the flavors), and found out that likely it is due to the "stale" taste of canned food compared to freshly cooked. (Btw Jackson Galaxy is totally right about kibbles tasting fantastic - depends on the brand, but the higher end ones really taste like low-sodium meat-flavored chips!)

The point about raw food is that it doesn't require cooking. At our local supermarket they sell chicken maws and hearts - pretty cheap stuff that's on the verge of byproduct - and we sometimes get this for our cats and they love it.

    • @CarolXiong
      @CarolXiong 3 роки тому +15

@@fannyhelene7104 Yeah, I eat chicken hearts and livers and whenever I do, I always make sure to save some for him. I cook it though, just in case there are parasites/bacteria. He is only 3 months old so I don't want to upset his tummy.

I just ordered a huge package of Feline Porta (wet food) because this brand is known for producing natural cat food with ca. 45-60% chicken or fish 🙂🐱

How worried ahould we be about chemicals in the lining of cans? We humans are recommended to stay away from certain chemicals in cans, but it's never mentioned what is used in the cans for cat food.

We were raised to give the cat dry affordable food & told it was best and healthiest for a cat.
Now it makes sense why my cat is complaining hungry & thirsty. Will be checking out more cat dietary/nutrition options & videos ASAP. Being that I am guilty of feeding her dry food as her primary diet in addition to canned human tuna & salmon & egg. (Probably another bad choice on my end).

Thanks Jackson! I started feeding my 3 cats wet food along with (less) their dry food a few months ago because of your advice. Now after watching this video I’m going to completely stop feeding them dry food and switch completely to canned only. Feeding dry food only explains why they are overweight so hopefully they will lose some weight over the next couple of months. The cats love the wet food so I’m sure they won’t miss the dry 😻🐈🐾

Totally eliminated dry food from our cats diets since part 1. They are happy and their post meal behaviour is more normal. Sleep it off, wake up with energy.
