I would make sure all to covered with moist soil, otherwise can act as a drying wick to dry the seed bed ends(though the tarp will slow this, I’ve had this happen).

Thankyou for the advise. Does anyone have any tips on how to make cheap but good quality compost. I love my gardening but the compost is just so expensive! Thankyou.

I collect all the weeds from the garden, chop up all the branches and peelings from vegetables and fruit and mix it all in a compost heap and add a little soil, in 1 season I get a great compost with a whole bunch of worms in it

I use kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, crushed egg shells, smashed chicken bones, wood ash, garden cuttings chopped up, cow, horse and donkey manure, fallen leaves. I saw a video of a man who ran a community heap, any neighbour could add and take and his one rule was it cold be added if it was recently alive. The heap needs to touching the soil so worms etc can get to it. Aim for 3 heaps, one you're still adding to, when that's big turn it and leave it to mature and when that's ready it becomes the third pile you're taking from.

@@steph7960 Secateurs. It takes ages so it's my evening job, I sit in the garden with plants on one side and a bucket on the other and when the bucket is full I dump it on the heap. It can take hours but it's worth it.

@steph7960 I take old potting soil from previous years . Add 1 20lb bag of worm castings, add 1 - 20-30lb bag of mushroom compost , 2 bags of black kow , and add about a gallon of perlite .. throw in 2 cups of blood meal and 2 cups of bone meal , all blended in , and you have a TLO ( true living organic ) soil mixture .
