Plain fact: Kirei wanted someone to truly understand him. Whoever that person was will have a huge impact on his growth as a person. Unluckily it had to be Gilgamesh.
He did not want someone to understand him He want someone to reject him because he cannot accept the fact that he's born broken. As someone who cannot find joy and detached from normal things he set his hopes on Kerry that seems to be discarding things as if he doesn't care about those to be similar to him. Yet kerry is not like him, he's capable of finding joy in normal stuff and yet discard it which is why it enrages Kirei out of jealousy. If he did not meet Gil he'll live in denial forever as how Kirei is in Apocrypha route. What Gil did is merely forcing Kirei to come into terms with himself which is something Kirei never wish to affirm yet he finally did. This tied to Heaven's Feels, the result of Kirei accepting his existence as "Born Evil" led to a question "Is someone who are fundamentally evil deserve to be born? can someone who are born evil be good?" In the end biggest part of the reason he wanted Angry Manjew to be born is to see if something that called "All the world evil" can be a good, His way is twisted but even after all this time Kirei live in contradiction of hating himself for finding joy in other suffering while cannot help to feel joy at the misery of other. Which is why the birth of Angry Manjew is a win-win situation for him and are perfect scenario : If it's evil it'll bring misfortune for a lot of people and he'll be happy, If it turned out it could change to be good then there'll be a newfound hope for him that he could be a good person too.
@@JeSt4m also I think shiro was the only one who rejected kirei while being similar to kirei himself. In HF both shiro and kirei liked each other despite hating each other as well (didn’t like each other romantically). Even if he wasn’t able to make sure angra mainyu was born he died with a smile on his face as he found peace. Im not sure but I think seeing shirou dicarding kiritsugus ideals and putting himself and his happiness before the faceless masses resonated something within kirei to the point where he found the hope. After all both shirou and kirei are empty. shirou decided to save others to bring happiness to his life and kirei found happiness in the pain of others.

Kirei was a breath of fresh air for me I was tired of characters overcoming their flaws with power of friendship forgoing path of revenge because of their good nature Kirei is a person who was born a Monster yet tried to live normally and if it was your everyday story he would have changed after his wife's death but he stayed the same he accepted darkness inside of him and watching him do cruel stuff just because that is literally the only thing that entertains him was awesome
Great Analysis. This also speaks about the nature of evil. I personally think Kirei is lawful evil as he forces himself to pursue this path. Trying to avoid his own self destruction and is more iconic when his rebirth is severed.
Caster would still probably be loyal to the "just be your truest self" mantra and nudge him down that path all the same............only he'd do so while giving his master Tokiomi fair warning (without giving everything away) as to not get too comfortable, especially around those he sees as his closest allies. If Tokiomi heeds the advice, and averts his own death, good for him. If not, oh well.......
@@nervmeister Nah, Caster Gilgamesh was less into following pleasure. He is, after all, the Sage King who overcame his shortcomings. In Babylonia he was even tainting his weapons by using them against the demonic hordes, an act regular Gilgamesh refused to do in Zero.
@@LeonGun8 Oh, I have no doubt he'd act with extreme prejudice against Gilles if he threatened the city with his largest summon, unlike his Archer self. But anything not an imminent danger to a civilization wouldn't concern him as much.
@@nervmeister True, but that's the thing, Kirei's goal of pleasure DOES leads him to want to summon a "Beast-like" creature. Not exactly something King Gilgamesh would be down with. He would also not take the same approach his Archer self did of trying to kill all unworthy humans.
The fact that Gil is now a "wise king who leads the masses" instead of being "A hero of great power" makes me think that he would still tell Kirei to follow his true self and pretty much give him the same advice as before *but* unlike Archer he'd probably tell Kirei how to be his true self while also being a productive member of society. Cater Gilgamesh is extremely efficient to say the very least and letting Kirei bring ruin to random people is wasteful. If anything he might recommend that he releases his true self to those who "oppose" Gilgamesh's society or assholes who when you think about it probably deserve a little bit of the Kotomine.
Polar opposites and two sides of the same coin are different. The two sides are the same thing, i.e. the coin, but in different ways. This would be Kiritsugu and Kirei as they have parallels but their faces are different. Shirou is the opposite as he is not a killer, hes not someone willing to do evil while Kirei reveled in it. Kirei is only genuine when it is time to slide the knife in, Shirou is someone who is genuine no matter the circumstance.
Fun Fact: Kirei in Japanese means Beautiful. You could say, Kirei, in his own way is "Beautiful". In the end, Claudia wanted to try to teach Kirei about love.
It is a different kanji (beautiful/pure/clean -> 奇麗 /Kirei -> 綺礼), but he was named like that on purpose. From the HF/VN: "The name Kirei is supposedly a word of prayer. The Father named his son in the hope that he would be pure and beautiful."
This is the very thing probably why I did not feel hate towards Kirei while reading Heaven's Feel. I felt like he was the more appropriate foil as Shirou's "villain". And this is why I ALWAYS tell FGO fans to read the novels. While Shirou "steels his mind" into believing his "heroic" ideals, Kirei came to accept his true nature of evil all to himself after ACTIVELY trying to make sense of it. While Archer represents Shirou's conflict within himself (literally), Kirei represents Shirou's conflict outside with others. Shirou did not hate him, because in some sense, he was envious of him finding his own answer, letting his true self come up with answers and not rely on anyone else's ideals. Shirou KNOWS Kirei could represent a possibility that Shirou will find his true ideals on his own if he wanted to, something that Shirou realized when he finally decided to save Sakura. A decision that is the biggest choice in the HF route. A decision, even his father Kiritsugu, would make.

Man, this video really is fantastic. I’d love to see more longform content like this - It’d say it’s even better than your Shirou and Spike analyses. Great job picking up on how the change in Kirei's appearance versus Kiritsugu's lack of appearance change is meant to reflect how they grow as individuals -- I didn't even notice that myself. Small correction at 16:09 though, Kirei actually was born with magic circuits, which is unusual for members of the Church who normally don't rely on them for their magecraft. It's precisely why he was able to learn Clock Tower-style from Tokiomi.
A really, really good explaination of Kirei. The only thing that was kinda glossed over (or maybe i didn't pay enough attention) was the Nature vs Nuture-Argument, but quiet honestly the little tidbits about Kirei's Life were more interessting.
Good job man. Impressive that you didn't even mention the paralels in the relationships of Kotomine and Shirow, and Zouken and Kotomine when you talked about the broken/relentless juxtaposing.
Because for all his depravity the thought that he didn't sits ill with him. Meaning on some level he cares. But then of course he does. If he didn't he would have succumbed to his desires ages ago and abused his position and ability to garner trust to commit evil while avoiding the consequences. He does scorn evil. He does admire good. But he only finds enjoyment in the former and only finds emptiness in the latter. Although he wishes with all his heart it was otherwise.
That was a good analysis. I love Kirei. He is my favorite villain in fiction along with Dutch Van Der Linde from Red Dead Redemption. Kirei's relationship with Gil kinda reminds me of Dutch's relationship with Micah. They are characters with very different personalities at it's core, though.

Yep definitely what i love the most about kirei, Instead of being the guy thats just evil because he likes it... Well he is that guy, but he actually genuinely TRIED to be a good person, but just couldn't find any purpose in life and through loss and more loss, resigned himself to seeking his own happiness despite it being evil

Kirei got into a relationship with his wife because he loved the suffering she was already going through subconciously, but it wasn't enough. What could be better than betraying her at the climax? But at the same time he was also confused. Was it really what he wanted? Knowing there is danger inside of him he did want to kill himself. When his wife died he cried due to the fact he couldn't kill her himself.
This was really well done my friend. I sat through every minute of it and I must admit as much as I hate Kirei. I really enjoyed the work and research that you put into this project. I am definitely going to be watching this a few times more because it was really that good. Keep up the good work! I never truly thought of it like that. That the reason that Shirou would even like a sicko like Kirei is because he needs a villain to his hero to give his goal and dream meaning. Makes you wonder that if Shirou were to ever be dropped in the my hero academia verse, it would probably end badly.
@@goldenbrigain7031 How Shirou would be a threat in the MHA universe? Well for starters, lets say that Shirou had won the war and made his wish. We all know that the grail would only grant it provided it is humanly possible and the closest thing to it would be to dump him in said universe. Which is overrun with heroes and villains; sure he would love it there but in the same token he would be a danger to everyone around him due to his personality. Do you remember the look of horror on Rin's face when he walked into a classroom of dead body's like it was nothing? He doesn't function like normal people do. Not to say that his heart is not in the right place, but due to him having a reality marble its safe to say that he is quite touched in the head. Him wanting to save people would fuel his psychological need, and having villains to fight also solves that as well. As a hero is only as good as the villain that opposes him. Not to mention the whole no killing villains thing, which Shirou can do but realistically against true threats like Shiguraki, he would not let him live in good conscience especially when he takes into scope the magnitude of his ability. Or people like him. Which I am fine with because you shouldn't let people like that live under any circumstance. He is a walking weapon if mass destruction with the ability to produce legendary weapons that are so vast and versatile that there are very few people who can honestly take him on. If at all. An if he went to UA then he would be under heavy scrutiny by his teachers who feel that they know what is best for him. If he was stupid enough to let them know what his ability is, which I don't think so. An could probably pass his magecraft off as his 'quirk' An all of this is provided he does not follow the same path that Archer did in this world, get cynical with time and experience. Which is wishful thinking. Especially when he sees that heroism is seen as a popularity contest to the masses and that societies notions end up causing more harm than good.
@@Conkel i have read it and its not bad. I however hated the nerf put on shiro despire the authors legitimate story reasons. As it feels like it invalidates everything shirou went through in the beginning. It does have nice moments however, like providing him a mother figure. As now that I think about it, he never had one to begin with at all. Only a father figure in Kiritsugu.
Wasn't Kirei adopted? The visual novel says Kirei "is a child his father was gifted with on a pilgrimage". Risei only raised him, Kirei is most probably an orphan. In the Fate series it must be common for the Church to pick up orphans anyway, since Kirei fed Gilgamesh from the end of Fate/Zero up until Fate/Stay Night (10 years span) with the energy from multiple orphan kids who were kept prisoners at the basement of his place -- Shiro was supposed to be among these victims had Kiritsugu not adopted him first.
I have a new found respect after now getting the "full" story of the man that is Kirei Kotomine. That is to say, I already had respect him in some way after HF explained his psyche even more. Thank you for this vid. Now I will look at Unlimited Black Keys in a new light! Thanks @Tsiah IV !
Honestly your channel is amazing and the reason why fate has the best antagonist I’ve ever seen none of them are evil at all Kirei rather than go around destroying everything within his sight head his entire persona for 30 years,Rider and Caster were people who lived their life as painted guilty with no voice and reason,Uryuu wanted nothing but to see the carnage of his own death and chased that desire in the worst way possible (rider and rin=best girls)

I wonder much how Shirou or the Archer class heroic spirit is a counter gaurdian as a result of his wish or contract to become a hero. Kirie Kotamine as a result becomes a counter gaurdian or an assassin class heroic spirit as a result of Shirou Emiya's wish. Just to bolster his legend just enough to be considered for Emiya to be considered a heroic spirit. Though he would be more of a catalyst counter gaurdian as to cause enough death and destruction as a prelude to an actual apocalyptic event to trigger the counterforce itself. In case more time is needed to prepare or the extinction level event is of such a magnitude that a counter gaurdian must be summoned earlier than later. Kirie being like an omen or light rain before the storm. Though him being more of a catalyst for the counter gaurdian. Or him being a way for the counterforce to activate itself abruptly he is given more independent action EX to cause destruction.
Good analysis. Many years ago I didn't understand the intricacies of Kotomine Kirei's character. Since then I watched and played more Fate, and came to my own conclusion, which aligns with yours. Kirei just wants to have fun.
Hats off to you, man. Excellent work. I have to admit that delving into this madman's personality on my own was absolutely irresistible when I first watched Zero. Glad to see I'm not the only one who appreciates and well developed and disturbing character. He is everything I want in a good villain.

0:45, this part was really funny for me since my Dad helped conceive me when he was 53 and this year he turned 80 years old. Basically the answer to Tsiah's question for my Dad is that he'll never stop trying to find his wife, even if he's been divorced 5 times and doesn't think there's any changes he needs to make as a person. Basically just be a Mega Chad forever XD

That is the harsh cynicism often found in the Fate Series, Especially Fate Zero.

No doubt, he needs more credit. Cunning, precise, and shows us a level of introspection thats oddly relatable.
Half way through while his VA Joji is absolutely amazing. I had wished he swapped with Toikomi having the best Manipulator Antagonist VA if Aizen

Id say he approaches chaotic neutral in Heaven’s feel. He has his own goals but he isn’t above helping others when he feels like it.

Man, this video really is fantastic. I’d love to see more longform content like this - It’d say it’s even better than your Shirou and Spike analyses. Great job picking up on how the change in Kirei's appearance versus Kiritsugu's lack of appearance change is meant to reflect how they grow as individuals -- I didn't even notice that myself.
Small correction at 16:09 though, Kirei actually was born with magic circuits, which is unusual for members of the Church who normally don't rely on them for their magecraft. It's precisely why he was able to learn Clock Tower-style from Tokiomi.
A really, really good explaination of Kirei. The only thing that was kinda glossed over (or maybe i didn't pay enough attention) was the Nature vs Nuture-Argument, but quiet honestly the little tidbits about Kirei's Life were more interessting.

He does admire good. But he only finds enjoyment in the former and only finds emptiness in the latter. Although he wishes with all his heart it was otherwise.

That was a good analysis. I love Kirei. He is my favorite villain in fiction along with Dutch Van Der Linde from Red Dead Redemption. Kirei's relationship with Gil kinda reminds me of Dutch's relationship with Micah. They are characters with very different personalities at it's core, though.

Kirei got into a relationship with his wife because he loved the suffering she was already going through subconciously, but it wasn't enough. What could be better than betraying her at the climax? But at the same time he was also confused. Was it really what he wanted? Knowing there is danger inside of him he did want to kill himself. When his wife died he cried due to the fact he couldn't kill her himself.
This was really well done my friend. I sat through every minute of it and I must admit as much as I hate Kirei. I really enjoyed the work and research that you put into this project. I am definitely going to be watching this a few times more because it was really that good. Keep up the good work! I never truly thought of it like that. That the reason that Shirou would even like a sicko like Kirei is because he needs a villain to his hero to give his goal and dream meaning. Makes you wonder that if Shirou were to ever be dropped in the my hero academia verse, it would probably end badly.

@@goldenbrigain7031 How Shirou would be a threat in the MHA universe? Well for starters, lets say that Shirou had won the war and made his wish. We all know that the grail would only grant it provided it is humanly possible and the closest thing to it would be to dump him in said universe. Which is overrun with heroes and villains; sure he would love it there but in the same token he would be a danger to everyone around him due to his personality. Do you remember the look of horror on Rin's face when he walked into a classroom of dead body's like it was nothing? He doesn't function like normal people do. Not to say that his heart is not in the right place, but due to him having a reality marble its safe to say that he is quite touched in the head. Him wanting to save people would fuel his psychological need, and having villains to fight also solves that as well. As a hero is only as good as the villain that opposes him.
Not to mention the whole no killing villains thing, which Shirou can do but realistically against true threats like Shiguraki, he would not let him live in good conscience especially when he takes into scope the magnitude of his ability. Or people like him. Which I am fine with because you shouldn't let people like that live under any circumstance.
He is a walking weapon if mass destruction with the ability to produce legendary weapons that are so vast and versatile that there are very few people who can honestly take him on. If at all. An if he went to UA then he would be under heavy scrutiny by his teachers who feel that they know what is best for him. If he was stupid enough to let them know what his ability is, which I don't think so. An could probably pass his magecraft off as his 'quirk'
An all of this is provided he does not follow the same path that Archer did in this world, get cynical with time and experience. Which is wishful thinking. Especially when he sees that heroism is seen as a popularity contest to the masses and that societies notions end up causing more harm than good.

@@Conkel i have read it and its not bad. I however hated the nerf put on shiro despire the authors legitimate story reasons. As it feels like it invalidates everything shirou went through in the beginning. It does have nice moments however, like providing him a mother figure. As now that I think about it, he never had one to begin with at all. Only a father figure in Kiritsugu.

Wasn't Kirei adopted? The visual novel says Kirei "is a child his father was gifted with on a pilgrimage". Risei only raised him, Kirei is most probably an orphan.
In the Fate series it must be common for the Church to pick up orphans anyway, since Kirei fed Gilgamesh from the end of Fate/Zero up until Fate/Stay Night (10 years span) with the energy from multiple orphan kids who were kept prisoners at the basement of his place -- Shiro was supposed to be among these victims had Kiritsugu not adopted him first.

I wonder much how Shirou or the Archer class heroic spirit is a counter gaurdian as a result of his wish or contract to become a hero. Kirie Kotamine as a result becomes a counter gaurdian or an assassin class heroic spirit as a result of Shirou Emiya's wish. Just to bolster his legend just enough to be considered for Emiya to be considered a heroic spirit. Though he would be more of a catalyst counter gaurdian as to cause enough death and destruction as a prelude to an actual apocalyptic event to trigger the counterforce itself. In case more time is needed to prepare or the extinction level event is of such a magnitude that a counter gaurdian must be summoned earlier than later. Kirie being like an omen or light rain before the storm. Though him being more of a catalyst for the counter gaurdian. Or him being a way for the counterforce to activate itself abruptly he is given more independent action EX to cause destruction.
