- Lost to history for centuries, the foundations of the house were rediscovered through the miraculous visions of a German nun named Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774-1824), who gave detailed directions and descriptions of the house.
Her directions were followed by Abbé Julien Gouyet of Paris in 1881, and by two Lazarist missionaries from Izmir in 1891. Both expeditions ended at the same place, a spot on Mt Koressos which had been venerated by local people-both Christian and Muslim-for centuries.
Excavations uncovered ancient stone foundations, most from the 500s and 600s, but some from the 1st century AD, when Mary would have been alive.
Today the Virgin Mary's House is a goal for pilgrims who come from far away to visit the house rebuilt as a chapel, to sip the waters of an adjoining spring said to have curative powers, and to enjoy the pine-shaded mountaintop location.
A commemorative service is held each August 15th commemorating the Virgin Mary's Assumption into heaven.
After a visit by Pope Paul VI in 1967, the Catholic church confirmed the authenticity of the legend and the visions. Pope John Paul II visited in 1979, and Pope Benedict XVI in 2006.
My wife and I visited the place on October 20,2011 and I prayed inside the large room. Experience was divine. Saw in that place Christian and Muslim pilgrims. It was a long trip from Ankara but our visitation was memorable and still fresh in my memory. I thank and praise God for the once-in-a-lifetime experience.
I truly believe she lived there. I've been there 3 times and I felt so emotional each time. This place has a different and divine energy that you can easily feel!
I was given a new heart and a new spirit there on October 10, 2011. Through Mother Mary’s intercession, it changed my life forever.

Venerated by Muslims as well as catholics/orthodox not Christians. This is the same reason why God hid the grave of Moses. Catholics would have made it a "holy" place and venerate it. Heck it's the same reason he hid many of his people's resting places because of these tendencies.
wesley, please stop calling certain people "Christian" when they don't obey Scripture. For example, Jesus doesn't allow marriage but so-called"Christians do. The Scripture says the that the church is the foundation of truth and knowledge, never does it teach Scripture alone. Jesus at the transfiguration spoke with Moses and Elijah (and you "Christians" say not to speak with the saints). Wake up your not obedient to Scripture!

Catholic/Orthodox *ARE* Christians. You mean not *PROTESTANTS.* Now, as you already noted, Muslims venerate Mary. Do you not consider it ironic that Muslims venerate Mary, & yet the average Protestant - who believe that Christ Is Almighty God - does not?
