- The introduction text is how a priest in 1600 descripted the Tarahumaras.
The Indians "Tarahumara" live at great distance, separated from each other and scattered. They prefer to live in ravines and canyons and in cold, inhospitable mountains where they have dwellings.
Lupe and Miguel raised five childern (three boys, two girls) in their cave dwelling with a wide open view of the Batopilas valley.
Now in their 50's, they occupy their time with daily chores and keeping the fire of the cooking stove burning to prepare food for the frequent visits of their childern who live scattered among the mountains.
During my four day visit I had plenty of time to think about the real life.

nothing lazy about these wonderful people. seems they work all the time to sustain their lives. Why would you ever make such rude comments in the beginning of this video. These people live a beautiful simple life in turn with nature and the animals. They are way ahead of other people in the world struggling with the modern world and getting no where. The Tarahumara know what counts the most. Soul first and this life next. Sound as if they have something to teach us.

Simplicity. Respect to all indigenous people. On my Dad's side of the family, my great grandmother is from the Copper Canyon, Tarahumara.

the tarahumara had to move into the mountains when the Spaniards came and tried to colonize them. A big part of the tribe was colonized but some moved into the mountains to live in caves. The Spanish then put a presidio or a military fort in the mountains where the tarahumara live and sent priests to try and convert them, but that didn't last long because the tarahumara got together with nearby tribes the tepehuano and guarijios and destroyed and killed the priests and soldiers guarding the presidio. After that there were other clashes with the Spanish but after a while the Spanish gave up and left them alone and that's where they are today. Although now a days some have moved into the city into government homes that were made for them by the state. I'm from Chihuahua, Mexico where this tribe is from so I like reading about them and other local tribes.
The Spanish butchers wanted to take there lives just like they stole there lands.

This was very informative as my maternal Great Grandfather Amalio Jose Sanches is from there. He said he is from the Tarahumara tribe. He died in 1976 at the age of 86. Thank you for some family history.

Stress-Free people... how I envy them
anxiety free. They are not sold into the consumer driven race that people of the developed world are locked into. Muy interesante este video y talvez alguien me podria decir de donde adquieren los alimentos cuando viven en una zona que no se ve nada de tierra para cultivar nada y ademas debe de ser muy frio ahi para sembrar plantas. Tampoco puedo comprender como es que alimentan los animales.

Yo capte atravez del video, que naturalmente tienen leche de chiva, huevos y cosechan maiz. Y parece que cuando se dieron una vuelta a ver a una de sus hijas,
de regreso, me fije que uno de los tambaches que llevavan traian limones y aceite. Saludos!

hay merecordo ami abuelo no vivimos en una cueva pero si en una casa d madera cosechabamos maiz frjol calabazas flores d calabaza ejotez chacales 1 parte la desidratabamos y guadabamos la otra la enbasabamos flores calabazas ejotez y ordeñabamos las chivas y asiamos quesos y las gallinas para los huevos y en tiepos d lluvia hay hongos comestibles kelites tomatillos coles los coles son como las aselgas..y criabamos puercos para la manteca y con esa guisabamos como estraño ami abuelo pero dios selollebo hoy nada es igual yo vivo en la ciudad pero esto me hizo llorar..saludos

La población de algunos países europeos y latinoamericanos, se conservan un poco más de 60 idiomas nativos americanos, y viven en continua resistencia frente a la perdida de sus elementos culturales como el idioma, vestimenta, etc. Así es México un país donde hay muchísima riqueza hasta en la pobreza extrema. Donde viven familias de las más ricas del mundo y familias viviendo en cuevas.

I've been doing ancestor work and in researching my father's side (along with results from a DNA test) I have come to believe I am descendant of these people. I never knew my paternal grandparents, so I found it very touching to watch the proud grandparents visiting their daughter and grandchildren. If I had the chance, I'm sure I could have watched my abuela make tortillas all day like Lupe was doing here. I've been told my grandmother used to make them thick like that in the same way.
I also want to say thank you for sharing something about the Tarahumara that isn't focused on running. Although that is an amazing and incredibly unique part of their culture, I am finding the smaller things that are highlighted in videos like this most touching and helping me connect to a part of me and my family. Thank you for sharing this

Es muy bonita la cultura indígena. Mi abuela es indígena huichol de Jalisco ellos también viven una vida simple recuerdo cuando eramos niños yo y mid hermanos íbamos a la montaña a visitar a mi abuela y ella nos daba de comer fueron muy bonitas esas experiencias vividas..

Laziness and sloth? They spend almost every hour of every day working. Plus they can literally run for days. I forget about how great a "rational civilized lifestyle" is. Exhausting resources instead of taking what you need, blinded by consumerism, and judging others. The first paragraph in the beginning is horribly misinformed and probably driven by the typical preconceived notion of the false stereotype of a Mexican person. I respect these people. I'm not saying i would like to live exactly like them but i do want to get close. Get myself a small property near a river or lake and grow my own food. When it comes to barbarity, civilized society is barbaric
I think you forgot to read this part in the video description "The text at the start is how a priest in 1600 descripted the Tarahumaras." The film maker likely put that quote in there to show perception versus the reality of the Raramuri life in modern times.

None of this is true, as throughout this video they are seen cultivating, walking long distances, providing and preparing their food and cleaning afterwards. They are not seen driving or using electric appliances...which would indeed make them lazy. Just a filthy lie. I am proud of my ancestry coming from Chihuahua.

Thank you for posting this. My son and I were studying the Tarahumara and this was an excellent look into their quiet, simple life. Their work is fairly steady, but many times of refreshing and time for conversation, and contemplation. This is certainly not something we commonly have in modern society. Our press to constantly have some form of entertainment ends up robbing us of something that the Tarahumara have managed to maintain, since the 1600 description. Thank you so much for posting this.

I admire their tenacity , because they live in a somewhat harsh environment but they are able to persevere. They seem like very humble people and I respect their way of life. Simple but dignified.
A simple way of life, but requiring constant toil. The lady works non-stop, as do all of them in undeveloped areas of the world. Imagine the daily effort it takes to put food in their mouths, maybe sell a few potatoes, walk long distances... Their cave, that gorgeous view! Magical. I wonder how it would be to require so little.

My dad and three other artists went to Copper Canyon to paint the Tarahumara Indians and see their culture. It was around this time of the year, April, but a couple decades ago. Their paints were amazing; they held an exhibit at the Henry Art Gallery on the campus of the University of Washington. They told me stories about their adventures there that I still recall with pleasure about the cave dwellers there.

My grandma on my father side was half Tarahumara and Mescalero Apache , her father Mescalero Apache and mother Tarahumara from the Copper Canyon area . My grandfather went there to look for gold , my father said he showed him a one inch gold nugget that his father gave him . They moved to San Antonio and had 14 kids and moved back to Southern California . My grandfather came from one of the first California ranch families that Santa Maria, California was named after . I loved to visit my grandma , her home always smelled of cooked food and freshly made tortillas . She cooked on a crude wood stove / oven out side in her outside kitchen using her clay pots and bowls. Even though she lived meager , she would always make plenty for the homeless and take it to them . We would walk 2 1/2 miles with me dragging my wagon to this place called Plaza Park in Oxnard , California to give out free burritos to the homeless , I was about 8 then . My grandma taught me what it meant to be a Christian . I now own and live on a small 12 acre homestead near Springfield, Missouri in the country and every time the rooster would crow I would think of my grandma Tonia and get hungry for some warm tortillas lol !
