  • This channel is a video that discusses the fascination of great apes (#gorilla、#chimpanzee、#orangutan) and enrichment.
Apes are the most intelligent animals and are therefore susceptible to mental illness.
Environmental enrichment is a measure to reduce mental and physical stress and lead a happy life from the standpoint of apes, not from the convenience and emotions of human beings.

Something is wrong with this place. I checked the information about the chimps living in this zoo and there have been far too many fatalities here. It's hard to belive that all those babies died of "infant neglect" with different mothers....I feel sorry for these animals, they don't look good, they don't look happy, they don't look healthy. 😞Thank you for the video.

I totally agree with you about there being something seriously wrong with this zoo compared to others, it’s as if they want them to attack each other or cause massive displays just for entertainment. I have never known of a zoo with so many infants dying the way they do here .

@@ryanbluer6098 Yes, something is definetely fishy. Even if there are real assholes and neglecting mothers among chimps too, you don't have to be a primatologist to realize that if there are two consecutive infant deaths with the same mother, either you need to prevent her from being pregnant again or you have to put the next newborn under artificial care. This zoo has a very particular idea about birth control....

Is one of two things they either do it on purpose to attract people to watch the big boy alpha male beating on everybody everyday actually there's two of them he has a brother that's worse than him Pikskie I absolutely despise that chimpanzee you think this one's bad check out his brother. This place should be shut down it's not only all of this is filthy I mean look at the floors feces and urine everywhere and they just throw the food rite down on the floor absolutely zero inrichment and all the chips have massive hair loss from being mentally stressed to the max poor diet and just being generally unhealthy. I just don't like bully chimpanzees that beat on females or weaker chimps for fun because not all of them do it I mean I know the alpha does his displays and usually picks on somebody every now and then but this is out of control it's like every single day all day. All of them are mentally stressed living in conditions like this is probably one of the main reasons they are going nuts all the time. Yeah 15 babies have died here they blame it on neglect but it's mostly accidents from other chimpanzees get ahold of the babies and they don't know their strength or how to deal with a baby chimp and sling them around stomp on them I saw it with Furts last baby Guts kept getting a hold of it and would grab the baby and run away with it and dangling it by one arm while he's climbing and Furt is too old to chase him around to get the baby back she would sometimes but what could she do. I think they have finally separated some of them to try to stop some of it because of all the complaints but you can't change the dank-ness of this place. They put the two alphas from both troop together the two brothers and put all the females together to keep them away from all the females. Another thing is they have to keep some of the females in their bedrooms for months at a time when they separated them plus this region of Japan has very cold Winters so they have to keep them inside for months making them literally go crazy. Just need to shut this place down and send the chimpanzees to a decent place period!!

Alpha male displays when food is first presented, is normal behaviour in chimp society. It's done to dissuade others from fighting over food as much as to insure he gets first choice. This is not abnormally violent behaviour for chimpanzees. Even a primate care facility as advanced as Monkey World, has fatalities amongst newborn infants, eiher due to ignorance of the inexperienced mother, or an outright rejection. This is always a major difficulty with birth, especially with primates that were not raised by a natural mother or stolen from the wild.

I dispise the enclosures at this zoo. There is not enough room for them to get away from displaying males. If they had better accommodations i wonder if the males might even calm down a bit. Not to mention their food looks inadequate and it reflects in their poor skinny bodies.
Thank you for your dedication filming this group. It must be emotionally draining to see it all in person.

Who’s brilliant idea was it to give them a cymbal to beat on? I am being sarcastic. I would be mad as heck if I had to hear that all day as an chimpanzee. Get that thing out of there. Give them some toys to play with.

It is very interesting when you say Eastern Chimpanzees are more ferocious than Western Chimpanzees. I think this is true. I noticed a lot of the brutal chimpanzee documentaries have all been centered on Eastern Chimpanzees whether is was the Gombe Civil War with so many chimps killing each other in the 1970s or the more recent Netflix documentary 'Chimp Empire' centered in Uganda which was also Eastern Chimpanzees. I've read that Eastern Chimpanzees also have larger skulls, heads and much larger K9 teeth than Western Chimpanzees.
I also don't think its a coincidence that Zoos such as Tama Zoo where most of the Chimps are Western, still have an Eastern Chimp as the female alpha (Peach) and have a half Eastern Chimpanzee as the male alpha in Bonbon.

@@GreatApesZoo That sounds promising, thank you for taking action! I kept thinking about what to do in this situation because it's just numbing to watch helplessly these poor creatures - somebody from the previous video recommended the Jane Goodall Institute, I find the idea very good, they are the number one protectors of chimpanzees. And JAZA could be contacted too. It's a pure scandal what's going on here. Tell us if we watchers can do anything.

That's right, the two populations are separated by a huge river and since chimps can't swim and are afraid of water, they couldn't mix, so they developed two completely different cultures - Frans de Waal primatologist mentions it in his books too. (And Jane Goodall could tell about it from firsthand experience....)

    • @latralla4577
      @latralla4577 Рік тому

@@collinblack9605 It was me, not GAP who mentioned the separation of the subspecies by the river - my bad, I made a mistake, the information I read from different sources refer to bonobos and chimpanzees. Let me quote here an article in Biographic: "About a million years ago, chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and bonobos (Pan paniscus) diverged from one another and began following separate evolutionary paths-tracks that have been shaped, in part, by the course of the Congo River. While chimps are widespread across western and central Africa, bonobos are found only in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Congo River separates the two species-chimps to the north, bonobos to the south-and the divide is maintained by the apes’ reluctance (or inability) to swim across this, the world’s deepest river. Chimps tend to avoid the river altogether. And while bonobos regularly wade into the water to forage for insects and peat-a strategy that photographer Cyril Ruoso captured in this shot-they never venture beyond waist-deep." But there's some scientific proof for the role of great African rivers in the subspecies' separation as well (although not as substantial as for bonobos and chimps), quote from a study appeared in Nature: "The Niger River has been proposed to separate western and central chimpanzees. Our findings suggest, however, that the Niger has not been a substantial boundary to gene exchange. Instead, chimpanzees in eastern Nigeria and those south of the Sanaga River in Cameroon, separated by only 200 km, have sufficiently divergent sequences to place them in the western and central chimpanzee clades, respectively. We therefore suggest that a phylogeographic discontinuity between western and central chimpanzees is located somewhere between the Cameroon Highlands in Nigeria and the banks of the Sanaga River in Cameroon. Distribution data for several other primates suggest the Sanaga River is an important boundary for many taxa."
Your remark about the video-distributors' "broken English" is very rude, considering the fact that the author's mother tongue isn't English (neither is mine), yet, she takes time to translate - even with the help of translating program - all her messages. Besides, I highly doubt her aim is to reap likes, comments and shares - she's been making constant efforts to improve the living conditions of captive apes and primates in Japan for a long time. Our interpretation about the chimps' behaviour can be different, but her message is poor captive environment makes these animals more frustrated and violent to each other (not to mention the more than suspicious consecutive infant death cases in this zoo).

He came very, very close to reaching the Top of the Outdoor Enclosure Wall! The Keepers repositioned the Rope Anchors to prevent this! I Hope HARUKI Escapes from Asahiyama Zoo and Lives Free! Even for just a few moments! I just hope no innocent people become victims should it ever happen!

I don’t like how these chimpanzees are treated, throwing their food into a small enclosure and being watched by humans is a bad combination in my book. They are treated like a commodity and it’s little wonder they get hurt .

In zoo's western chimps are a lot calmer because of the way they are treated, along with the better enclosures and better food. The zoo's in the east are terrible. No animals are happy there. Chimps in the wild are not different, whether they are from the east or west. This is just zoo behavior

Second, I think that chimpanzees do not feel pain during display. It seems like they are in a different mental state.
