Dear God, woke up with this stuck in my head -- a song I had not thought of in 60 years. My mother must have liked it and we had the 45 in the house. Holy moly -- the brain works weird ways. I actually think this is pretty catchy. I remember the B side was The Rain falls on Everybody
Another artist I grew to love from the record boxes of my parents that seemed to hold so much magic in them. I used to listen to their 45s all the time.
On this day in 1958 {August 25th} "Pickle Up A Doodle" by Teresa Brewer entered Billboard's Top 100 for a one week stay at position #99... This record was her next release after her #8 hit, "You Send Me" {a covered version of Sam Cooke's #1 record from a year earlier in 1957}... Both Ms. Brewer and Mr. Cooke were born in 1931; Ms. Brewer passed away in 2007 at 76 and Mr. Cooke died in 1964 at the young age of 33... May they both R.I.P.
I know this song for now 30 or more years from an old tape-recording I was making as a schoolboy - and now I found it here and learned about the singer. One of my all-time-favourite Songs.
I use to play this 45 all the time as a little girl. It seemed a lot faster back then. If I remember correctly it was the B side and on the A side was The rain falls on everybody, everybody is the same.
With a ho double hoop shaw Riggle laba dope and A-doodle and a-daddle And a puff of my smoke And a-heapin' and a-hawkin' And a-cheekin' and a-chalkin' And a-pickle up a-doodle In the middle of the day Did you ever hear the story Of Belinda O McHugh She was courted by the devil And she didn't know what to do He came a-courting Every evening [Chorus:] So Belinda got to thinking She would be the devil's wife It was better far than being An old maid all her life He came a-courting Every evening [Chorus:] So Belinda told the devil Sir, if I should marry you Would you treat me like the devil Or like better husbands do? He came a-courting Every evening [Chorus:] So the devil told Belinda Now I'll fetch a load of bricks And I'll build for you, a mansion Right upon that River Styx He came a-courting Every evening [Chorus:] So the devil took Belinda and He claimed her with a kiss And no one has ever seen her From that fatal day to this He came a-courting Every evening [Chorus:] Now they say that she would Still be living as the devil's wife For he spends his time upon this earth Far away from married strife But he won't come Courting in the evening He came a-courting Every evening [Chorus:] Pickle up a doodle In the middle of the day
My mom would sing this to me when I was 9 years old I still have the 45RPM record, I was named after the movie Johnny Belinda starring Jane Wyman won 11 academy awards, in 1949 best picture, Jane Wyman was Ronald Regan's first wife. I never liked my name as a kid, because it was not a common name, it is in some countries Australia, England, and Germany. I like it now one of a kind. I have since facebook met a lot of ladies named Belinda. I like the beat of the song and the funny words, but not the devil part, wait a minute maybe my ex-husband was the devil after all?
"with a ho double doshaw, wriggle abba dope, and a doodle and a daddle and a puff of my smoke, and a hickin and a hokin and a chicken and a chokin and a pickle up a doodle in the middle of a day. Excuse me, that was involuntary
the 50's pop songs were really made for children only the rebels used to listen to Rockabilly and the "society" hoped they listten only things like this

I remember this from my childhood, but I could never make out the words. I don't think I was alone there!

With a ho double hoop shaw
Riggle laba dope and
A-doodle and a-daddle
And a puff of my smoke
And a-heapin' and a-hawkin'
And a-cheekin' and a-chalkin'
And a-pickle up a-doodle
In the middle of the day
Did you ever hear the story
Of Belinda O McHugh
She was courted by the devil
And she didn't know what to do
He came a-courting
Every evening
[Chorus:]
So Belinda got to thinking
She would be the devil's wife
It was better far than being
An old maid all her life
He came a-courting
Every evening
[Chorus:]
So Belinda told the devil
Sir, if I should marry you
Would you treat me like the devil
Or like better husbands do?
He came a-courting
Every evening
[Chorus:]
So the devil told Belinda
Now I'll fetch a load of bricks
And I'll build for you, a mansion
Right upon that River Styx
He came a-courting
Every evening
[Chorus:]
So the devil took Belinda and
He claimed her with a kiss
And no one has ever seen her
From that fatal day to this
He came a-courting
Every evening
[Chorus:]
Now they say that she would
Still be living as the devil's wife
For he spends his time upon this earth
Far away from married strife
But he won't come
Courting in the evening
He came a-courting
Every evening
[Chorus:]
Pickle up a doodle
In the middle of the day
Yikes! HOLY SMOKE! Thanks great - enchanting.
My Dad had this 45 single.
She so beautiful in this video. I would steal her records from my mother
Yes Sir so would I.
Used to play that 45 over and over

I have the original 45 from 1958 on CORAL Vogue. (Britians version of the CORAL label) It's hard to keep up with the words at first!
This is terrifying on so many levels.
Why?
?
@@foxvienna1 Because
exactly , how a supposed " Christian" nation sung a song that talks about the devil ? ( btw , i like it !!)

I actually bought this single. Of course, I was about 9 years old
"with a ho double doshaw, wriggle abba dope, and a doodle and a daddle and a puff of my smoke, and a hickin and a hokin and a chicken and a chokin and a pickle up a doodle in the middle of a day. Excuse me, that was involuntary
lol (but i love this song)
the 50's pop songs were really made for children only the rebels used to listen to Rockabilly and the "society" hoped they listten only things like this
Yeah, maybe that's true. But my philosophy is: "When somebody tells you it's EITHER/OR, my answer is it's BOTH/AND."
With a ho double hoop shaw
Riggle laba dope and the
Doodle and the daddle
And the puff of my smoke
And the heaping and the huffing
And the chicken and the choking
And the pickle up a doodle
In the middle of the day
More reverb! More reverb! 😁
Sounds like an Irish song
