very strict teacher. i think pundit ajoyji was very hard on kaushiki because he knew that she was a child prodigy and she could succeed in hindustani classical music. she looks so sweet but yet fearful to open her mouth to try to sing to not make a mistake. the paltas where pundit ajoyji starts a part of it and then expects kaushikiji to complete the pattern on her own, WOW. that is alot for a little kid to handle. very challenging. she needed to first analyze the swar patterns and convert them into numbers in her mind and replace those numbers with swars and then complete the whole octave ascending and descending and then sing.

None of my Gurujis made me do this. I had it easy. Panditji always said us students of his here in London, were like his daughter. But his daughter is superb!

It's need to be understood for current education system...a strict master can creat a super tailented n good personality... great father.. example.
When there is a strict master children will learn out of fear and not with the Passion, if the kids are really interested in learning they don't even need a master... So strict master can't even creat normal talent..

yes. i used to get the same feeling and i grew up in the US. my father used to be a chemistry professor in india and he used to teach me maths and science tuitions and help with my homework in the US. a few mistakes and he would blow up at me. here in US, we are not used to that type of learning. the teachers are very patient. they never yell and scream at you for the slightest or small mistakes that are made. it got to the point that his teaching method never sunk in to me and he spent money got me a private teacher who used to teach me my maths and science and that teacher was patient and better and taught me the concepts better and i understood them better and performed better in school and got better marks.

Unfortunately, this kind of rigorous and strict training works only in india because most famous indian musicians only concentrated on one thing and that was music. the old timer indian musicians, they got fully musically educated, hands on, through the guru shishya parampara tradition, nothing else. And kaushikiji followed that tradition. kaushikiji here concentrated on two things while she was learning music under her father: she did formal educational studies in school and college and music that is all. but this type of training does not work in other foreign countries or western countries like US, canada, UK, or australia where indians are also settled where the younger indian generation wants to do everything like studies, sports, music etc..
Unfortunately more and more of these artists do not have a full stomach to keep their singing up. Not everyone has the privileges to do what they love to do.☹

i would've loved to try this kind of strict riyaz in hindustani music in the US, but unfortunately my health conditions did not permit me to go through the strict riyaz process for hindustani music although i did go through the strict sadhakam process for carnatic music in the US and the not

Sounds like an awful experience. Takes the joy out of learning music. Too much pressure. I went through this process too when I was younger. Music became associated with fear and perfection rather than joy and divinity, which is such a pity.
@Teddy Bear Pressure is not the solution, it is projected so by our "do it NOW, JUST DO IT" culture. Also the importance of passion that you spoke about, children Dont understand this entire story of passion. But yes, since in this case its harmless music, she is in right hands.

I think pressure is what you feel for so many unnecessary reasons.. for a person who wants to learn many things of great difficulty.. this seeming pressure is a challenging opportunity to further hone self perfection.. it's like putting the gold through extremely hot fire to bring it to the perfect shape.. it's the perspective of one's mind which determines.. not any other..
If u go with today's competitive attitude to beat someone in a competition.. ofcourse no wonder it is an eternal pressure hole.. but when you do something with heart breaking sadhana.. just simply for the sheer realisation of it.. it's more wonderful than ever.. more challenging activities are life enhancing and liberating.. never pressure some and entangling..
