What a great informative video. Having used many makes/machines over the years (yes I am old 😂) Juki is my favourite, fab machines, reliable, strong and easy to use. My first was the DX7, a great machine and if I’m honest my favourite. I upgraded to the UX8 (am in the UK so DX4000 equivalent) and again another great machine that I love. I mainly sew bags (as a hobby) and have for a long time. I decided to add a TL2300 (not sure what your equivalent model number is) and I can now use the thicker threads for top stitching. I also find it a great machine for soft toy making which saves my UX8 from all that fluff 😂 So in essence, after researching what I needed for bag making in the past I will say that your advice is spot on and will I wish I’d had it when I was struggling to find the right machine…well done 👏 Anyone looking to buy a new machine, you can’t go wrong with a Juki they are fantastic machines x
Hi Sue, I have the DX7 and yesterday at the Harrogate knitting & Stitching show I ordered the Juki TL2300 Sumato for my bag making endeavours. Impatiently waiting for delivery next Friday 👍🏻
Listening to you speak while I’m sewing up some leather ( heavy duty:) framing chisel sheaths. Only 1/2 inch thick English bridal leather. On my 115 year old Landis # 3 harness stitcher . The old workhorse is still chugging along. New machines are in the future. ❤
I have the TL2010q and have made some pouches and one large tote that was not heavily interefaced but had leather strap handles. I've had no problems. What I really wanted it for - because I have 4 Berninas - is because I saw so many quilters use it and loved it and I concur!! Also, I follow someone very well known on Instagrams that has a TL she uses to make TONS of bags - mostly from quilting cottons but she does use vinyl a lot too. And there's another woman who makes bags and pouches on a TL. It's really a great machine that I do not regret purchasing!!
I've been a Janome owner since I started quilting almost 10 years ago. I bought a TL-18 as a Christmas present to myself last year and wow, it is a great bag making machine! I love my computerized Janomes - Skyline S7 and an M17 - but the Juki is a beast! It is amazing for bag making.
I have the Juki 1541S and LOVE it. I sew with vinyl, waterproof canvas, and clear vinyl. AND IT WILL SEW COTTON AS LONG AS it’s interfaced!!! I have done it many times, just want everyone to know!!
Excellent video. I bought the 1541S because I knew I wanted to work with thick leather. I've been using it to make outdoor covers with Sunbrella types of fabrics. BBQ cover, pool equipment covers. I've done some upholstery repair work on it too that none of my domestic machines could have handled. The industrial sews denim very well too. I did some binding edge stitching on a denim quilt on the industrial when it got too thick for my domestic. I don't like being limited and the industrial gives me the ability to handle the more challenging tasks. I have other machines that will handle the lighter duty tasks and decorative stitches. I wouldn't mind having a TL and will likely get one eventually. TFS
I bought a Juki F300 8 months ago because the refurbished Brother Project Runway model I have can’t handle the quilting projects I started (and continue to make). Since then I’ve also made 2 weekender bags and an attaché/laptop case. For the most part, my Juki can handle whatever I throw I’m at it, although it doesn’t like to play nice with stiff foam fusible stabilizers. If I thought I would be making bags a lot more, I might consider upgrading; however, since I had to take out a loan to pay for my ~$600 F300, I don’t foresee making a change anytime soon. I❤️JUKI!!!
I have the TL2000 for my bag making and quilting. I love it. I love the power. I have a small Singer patchwork forZig zag and a few other stitches. Thank you for your info
Love my 1181. Best machine in 50+ years sewing. I sew marine vinyl, waterproof canvas, some leather. For lightweight stuff I have a vintage Kenmore 158 and a Singer 201. Rarely use my Consew cylinder arm, it’s a beast and more than I need. The only machine I regret is my Babylock.
I use a tl 18, mainly work with cork and vinyl ... I use it mostly for top stitching , I use a size 16 needle along with a polyester bonded tex 45 thread. My tl has a computerized companion for bag lining.
I have the Juki DDL-9000c-fms, which is a computerized industrial machine. I sew 2 layers of unlined quilting cotton on it all the time, in fact it is what I sew the most. It also handles fleece and sherpa well. I also use heavy duck cotton, vinyl and ottertex on it with no issues. However - full disclosure - I am NOT a bag maker YET. I have only made totes and the PursePal (Linds Handmade). Also- this machine is on the pricey side.
I have the Juki 1541S and I think it is an excellent choice for bag making, however any good domestic is fine for the lining. I have been using the 1541S lately for outdoor covers using heavy duty UV protection canvas type of fabric. I am also now doing some upholstery repairs using a combination of machines. Domestic to patch dog bite holes and industrial to replace entire zipper panel sections and piping. I feel like It took a while to feeling comfortable with the industrial and changing the stitch length to a smaller stitch made a difference in maneuverability. For a while I questioned myself on if the 1541S was the right choice or if maybe I should have gone with a semi-industrial. I now feel confident in my choice, especially since I have some strong domestics that can handle the other stuff.
I have making backpacks with my dx7. I use more technical fabrics and i think i have pushed it way past what it should be doing, but it takes it like a champ...i think my next machine will be a TL
My DX7 was my first Juki and I love it for all my piecing and taking on retreats. My NX7 is my second Juki and so far she's been great but she needed to go back to Juki because the needle was a little off center. Hopefully she'll come back all fixed up because she was great for making all my knitting project bags. I mainly use quilt cotton and cotton canvas. I also use the NX7 for quilting. The 12" throat space is awesome. A small part of me regretted getting the NX7 instead of the TL but after watching this video I do think the NX7 is a better fit. I might have to add a TL to my collection if I start making more bags to share with my knitting group. Thank you for all you do.
I have industrial machines. Direct drive straight stitch. Industrial 4 thread overlock direct drive. Both have speed adjustment. But they don't have the versatility as the Juki NX7 OR UX8 OR NX7 I sew a lot of fine work. Thin fabrics which need slow speeds, and perfect stitches, expensive garments
I just happen to pick up a TL 98 for a steel of $200 and I have absolutely love it and didn’t realize it was for a bag making that you’re specifying. What type of bags are you talking about because I am looking to get into making bags, purses, backpacks, etc., could you do a show on making bags are given example of bags. Also, where can I purchase the missing presser foot knee lift compatible for this machine. Thank you!!!!
I needed this video XD but I already made my decision. I ended up with an industrial since my question was hakura or 1541s. I chose the 1541s since I want to work with leather leather. I was also conflicted on the du1181 but I didn't think it would be good for the veg tan leather since I also make clothes, jackets, harnesses etc. Thanks for answering this question! I'm glad I made the right choice.
Thank you, I have a juki tel 2000 I’ve heard a lot of good things about the 1181 for bag making I also do upholstery what’s the biggest difference between the 1181 & 1541 I believe is the other one?
I’m just starting my bag making with my TL18. So far I’ve only put Tex70 thread in bobbin and top and put in a size 16 needle and tested the tension on a vinyl strap. I needed the Teflon foot then got a great stitch by making minor adjustments to the tension. I’m not sure about having to always be adjusted the tension between tex70 and glide 40. Would you talk about this when bag making with the TL machine. Is glide strong enough to construct heavy vinyl and waterproof canvas bags?
@@JukiJunkies What I find then is constantly changing tension. the pattern calls for sewing and then top stitching a section which means changing the tension back and forth. Any suggestions?
@@JukiJunkies @JukiJunkies What I find then is constantly changing tension. the pattern calls for sewing and then top stitching a section which means changing the tension back and forth. Any suggestions?
I’ve been watching the tl’s for the longest time, but just don’t have the budget. I wished the tl had a zigzag and buttonhole feature. I have the Bernini 1008 which has been fine. It has the zigzag and buttonhole, but does not have the extra presser foot lift.
I’m in to bag making. My Skyline laughs at me when I try to work with bulky denim seams. My biggest question is which machine will walk over low-to high-to low bulky seams. I tried using a friends TL 2000 and it broke a needle, hit the throat plate and laughed at me, too. I’m looking for something that will handle that scenario bc that’s my biggest hurdle. I work with repurposed jeans.
Juki 1541S - Can the presser foot be lifted manually with your hand? I had to sell my Sailrite Fabricator because the knee lift caused a lot of pain in my arthritic right knee.
This video was really needed because there are so many different Juki machines to chose from. I have a JukiTL 2010Q. Best machine ever, for everything I sew. I do want to get another Juki that is as strong as the JukiTL for my bags, but also does the different stitches and is good for taking to Sewing retreats. Did you day you recommend the DX series?
