Easily Carried & Concealed .44MAG Revolvers

- This is a not-so-short video detail my thoughts on how it is easier to carry and conceal a .44mag revolver than most people might think. especially if you get the right .44mag revolver.

Glad someone said it, it's ok to carry something like this just because you can and want too. I know this is an old video but I still appreciate it.
A 44 magnum with that short of a barrel looks almost cartoonish. i love it!
Being able to handle the recoil of a firearm is a huge factor in deciding what to carry. Hitting with a .380 is WAY better than missing with a .44mag.
Yeah, but hitting with an.44 mag. Is way different than a .380
It’s just as easy to hit something with a 44. Trust me
I think y’all are missing the point of what he’s saying….he’s not saying you shouldn’t carry a 44, he’s saying carry a gun that you can handle the recoil. If you can’t handle a 44 a .380 might be better because you’re more likely to hit your target.

Why oh why do revolvers have to be so damn sexy
I carry a Taurus Tracker 4" 5 round .44 Magnum with .44 Spl loads, it conceals real well BTW. and yes ALL steel rules.
That's my carry gun too
I’m looking at that gun at the moment but with the 2.5 inch barrel
Mine too
I carry a 3.75" Ruger Vaquero .44 magnum loaded with 320gr wide long nose hard cast lead bullets in a .44 special case using accurate #9 powder. I recommend watching FortuneCookie45LC's series on the .44 special. It helped me develope my carry load and is full of great information. I wanted a low velocity, heavy defensive load that wouldn't destroy my hearing. I prefer revolvers myself and love single action revolvers. It's not for everyone, takes a lot of practice. Good luck fellow .44 lovers !
320 grain for personal carry. Would that be considered excessive for every day carry ?
@@throwzilla Yes, it is. To justify carrying a .44, you would have to believe that a .357 magnum isn’t enough, which is insane.
My S&W Model 29 is all I need. Go ahead. Make my day!
A great, classic firearm. Unfortunately, it isn't as concealable as the two .44 mags presented in this video.
The bad guy would start acting like Jar-Jar Binks, when you pulled that 629 on him :-D
I find the round cylinder and profiles of even an N-frame S&W fits and conceals much easier than the flat-sided full-sized auto pistols. I carried a Colt Commander when I first acquired a CCW. I got a steal-deal on a S&W 66-1 at a pawn shop. Picked up several holsters and after carrying the S&W 66 one day, the Commander was retired. The K-frame S&W was just SOOO much more comfortable to carry! And speed strips and speed loaders were so much easier to hide and deal with than extra 1911 mags! Plus range practice time is so much quicker and efficient with a revolver than an auto pistol. No mags to load, no feeding issues to deal with, no ammo issues to deal with, no dealing with limp wristing failures by the friend I took along to shoot. My auto pistols have been retired to the status of "range toys to play with" while my revolvers are now the serious weapons I trust to save my life. While it is possible for revolvers to fail, in truth at my local range, while I have seen multiple auto pistol failures and issues every range trip I have ever been on, I have NEVER seen a revolver failure other than dud ammo. And dud ammo is cleared with a trigger stroke on the revolver, but requires time and two hands with an auto pistol. "Time and two hands" = dead on the scene with unfired, fully loaded auto pistol laying by your side in reality. Rant and mouth frothing over.
@Brian Fortin: GREAT list. Thank You. I'm copying your list. I'm not ashamed to steal good ideas.
+Brian Fortin Revolvers are making a comeback it seems. The J-frames & equivalents have been there solidly all along. Have personally observed many CCW holders return to the J-Frame after experiencing how finicky and unreliable small 9mm & 40 auto pistols are. The 410/45 Colt revolvers have brought many back into revolvers who are now starting to explore 38/357/44/45 revolver options to 9/40/45 auto pistols. IMO the most reliable and effective bullet for self defense is a large 85%caliber meplat flat point bullet, balanced in meplat & velocity to keep bare 10% gelatin maximum penetration at 18-19 inches max. Such bullets fail miserably in auto pistols but work beautifully in revolvers. An 85% caliber meplat 44/45 200gr bullet at 1000fps will blow permanent 1 inch diameter tunnels completely thru 2&4-legged critters for practically instant stops, as proven on 200+pound hogs. Have seen 200 pound hogs shake off 9/40/45 JHP auto pistol hits like they were bug bites! The 200gr 44/45 @ 1000fps is very controllable and easy to shoot yet the large meplat flat-nosed bullet does incredible instantly effective damage. Going above 200 grains in 44/45 gives overpenetration for self-defense but is great for hunting big critters. An 85% meplat FN-bullet 255gr 45 Colt at 1000fps for example will punch clear thru 24 inches of bare 10% gelatin, leaving a big hole behind, while a 200gr version stays in the 18-19 inch penetration range that is ideal for self-defense.
I often carry the 629 S&W performance center 2.6" .44 Magnum in an IWB holster and a heavy duty concealment belt (LEATHER) which if you carry you should have. It's actually comfortable. I use a concealment vest even in our hot Florida weather. Excellent set up for the revolver advocate.
You are spot on balls with this one. I have carried a Taurus M44 on many occasions. It is smaller than the Smiths as it is only a 5-shot but as I have also carried J-Frames I consider 5 shots ample for personal carry. I believe that's another video of yours as well that I watched and really liked. Thanks for the 44 Mag props.
When neutralizing an enemy, there's no such thing as overkill.
Good video. Never thought about carrying a .44 magnum until now. Thanks.
Also people can use .44 spl ammo (hallow points or underwood xtream penetration) which is a great round and way less recoil. Then you have also the power of the 44 mag. I love the .44 mag !
You could even let a few/the last after 44 specials be mags my 2c
Hollow points, not hallow points.
Extreme, not xtream.
Indeed
Well done. There is definitely something alluring about a beefy & compact 44 revolver, & this vid provides the rationale to carry them.
Great presentation. I own two S&W 629's (3" barrel length) and a 50th anniversary S&W Model 29 with 6.5" barrel. A 50th anniversary .44 magnum Ruger New Super Blackhawk.
I had to laugh. Recently in a CCW class the instructor stated revolvers jam more than a semi-auto.
I held my tongue; the class had gone on long enough.
Oh, I have to add I carry a Taurus 6" .357 M66 in a shoulder holster often. No problem concealing it and I have the fire power needed WHEN I need it.
really fine pistols 44 mags scare a lot of people away due to recoil but if you shoot them enough they grow on you ive been around 44s since i was young and i shoot them very easily it just takes practice the 44 is a awesome round
Gosh I love revolvers, semi-auto guns are cool but I really like revolvers.
I carry ruger Redhawk .44 holds 6 rounds and has a 2.75in barrel. My holster and belt are made by simply rugged holsters. I can comfortably carry my 44 Redhawk and two speed reloads on my belt while wearing a tee shirt. Remember that making the first shot count will always outweigh capacity. Training is the only thing that will actually help you.
Awesome illustration! gets the point across very well
Hard to miss someone 3 feet away! 44 mag all the way
I have a simply rugged holster from Arizona for my Ruger Redhawk 44 mag. 2.75 barrel talo .It is very concealable. Holds it high and tight. Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake holster.
Been thanking about moving up to a. 44 Special and appreciate your video. I generally shoot.38s in a 357 rated revolver. I guess I well buy a44 mag and load down, but like the 357 mag load up if I see a need.
I'm the exact same! 👍
For OWB carry, try the Galco "Concealable" open top holster. I carry my Smith & Wesson, 4" barrelled, beautifully Blued .44 magnum "Mountain Gun" for concealed carry up here in Wisconsin as soon as the flannel shirts come out. But we are an open & concealed carry State, so I don't give a Damn if someone does notice it. I usually keep .44 specials in it, with 2 speed loaders of high octane .44 magnums in my pocket, for when shit gets real. The .44 special is nothing to sneeze at either.I keep a dedicated.44 special 2 & 1/2" barrelled, 5 shot "Bulldog Pug" as my car gun, it never leaves my SUV. Prefer 5 shots of .44 special over just 5 shots of most other calibers !
@GunznGear it is always a nice feeling walking around knowing your gun is bigger than the other guy's.
Any Pistol round Is a compromise of a Revovler round , to make them fit in a mag/grip.We need to train/practice with anything WE Carry. Great video as always.Thank you
I agree, with a good belt you don't feel the weight and its easy to get used to.
Love your revolvers man. Beautiful
Now you got me thinking spring clip shoulder holster and Super Blackhawk. Drool.
there's a lot of people that shy away from a 44 due to its recoil, but if you get one and shoot it a lot its really not an issue i have been around the 44 mag since a was young my father used to take me camping in the desert and he always had a 44 which i shot when he had ammo to spare, im 53 now and shooting a 44 is like shooting a 38 or something its a great round i keep a 44 with me in my truck everywhere i go
I truly love revolvers myself. Particularly the .44 magnum. Unfortunately the one I have is about as unconcealable as it gets, short of a lever action rifle anyway. I am definately a "more than you really need because you never know..." kind of guy. I appreciate your insight on the matter. Now I want a snub-nosed S&W .44mag... Thanks. (Sarcasm, my want list is already too big!)
lew Horton had a run of 629 2" barrel,686 2" with kframe round grips, great guns
I have the 629 2 1/2 love it I have carried it a lot I have also carried a 500 S&W with a 4 inch barrel not that it was a need to but just because it our right I carry a colt defender all year for the most part love the videos
I love all steel revolvers also. I do have a S&W Nite Guard in 44special that I've enjoyed carrying as a camp/hiking gun, but 44spcl don't beat you up much, even w/ the scandium frame. I think Reminton used to make a 44 mag SWC load that was moderate(1000fps), and Corbon's Glaser ammo includes a 44mag offering. Those might just be the ticket for short barreled cannons. I've CCW'd a 4" S&W model 58 for awhile... just b/c I could! 6 rounds of 41mag can be comforting also!!! Thanks for sharing
I have a Taurus tracker 44 mag 4 inch barrel but only 3 inches of rifling. last inch ported chamber no rifled got. I love this revolver probably more than all my semi auto and revolvers. as a reloader of 42 years much experience and testing bunches of weapons 44 mag is my favorite. I reload 180 gr xtp 1265 FPS with over 600 fpe . no where near max charge. last time I remember shooting target offhand 2 shots center inside inch circle at 20 yards. not to bad . younger eyes and stedyer hands could do better. with disability sand health issues especially with hands I think papa can hold his own . I would love to have the model 29 with fixed sights . I greatly enjoyed the video. Nana papa papa the hunter from the foothills of the blue ridge mountains in North Carolina wishing you well.
Those have to be a beast to hold onto when firing. WOuld have love to see those on the range. I almost bought one a while ago and just could not justify it. Good vid.
My main carry gun is a 3" 629 Talo Edition with a Nelson Ford action job. Loads are just a little hotter than a .44 special with Mihec Keith hollowpoints. I like that I can practice with and use the same gun for all my woods carry and urban carry needs.
Nice Yankee , very nice info , thank again .
A 2.75 inch Model 69 5-shot L-frame 44 magnum is a good one and thinner too.
I EDC my S&W 69; ALL STEEL stainless "L" frame 44mag. It's thinner with just 5 shots, BUT just 7 oz lighter than a 629. Mine has the 4" barrel and performs like the larger 629 at about $100 less cost. This gun shoots great, especially with Civil-Defense 44 specials around town or Federal 44 mag JHP in the woods. Simply a great, POWERFUL EDC.
I live in the desert and carry my 629 often in my carry rotation under a light button down shirt and a OWB holster with a forward cant. It is a great carry option for a man with a larger frame.
Excellent looking revolvers,great video
I applied for my NYS pistol permit 9/12. The wait time is 6-8 months for approval. I defiently want a revolver. 44's are a lot more expensive to shoot. I might go with a 686 S&W 3" barrel. A happy medium for accuracy, cost of ammo, and fire power.
Thanks for the great video, I set in motion of buying a Henry Big Boy .44 mag( actually put it on lay a way at Walmart for a political statement) so I’ll be picking it up before Christmas 2018. 2019 my wife being the wonderful lady she is taking me to Anniston AL(CMP) for a M1 and in July buying a .44 mag revolver, so this really helped.
I wish i had these two revolvers
For a number of years, my regular fall & winter concealed carry gun was a 4" S&W Model 29. Never had any problem carrying or concealing it.
Where I live we don't worry about brown or Grizzly bears. We don't have them. We do have alligators.
Yankee, don't you worry about being attacked by alligators? They can be pretty nasty. Sneaky too.
Love the S&Ws. and I also carry Charter Arms Bulldog 44 special
I really enjoyed watching a video by you without the obtrusive jokes blocking my view, great job!
All good points. I EDC a 44mag.
Nice guns.
Dude those 44 mag revolvers you have are so impractical. They are heavy, rounds limited, and very expensive. Oh and by the way they are fucking beautiful!!!!! I love them LOL
Because you don't want that bear in the woods to see that you're actually armed.
I feel like that was supposed to be a pun about "bearing" arms lol
Them pesky bears calling the police on people who open carry their firearms.....
@Cousin Jimmy Farha Yep 44 Russian was a very nice round.
Plus, with a revolver you don’t have to worry about jamming when loading in a situation, and you can draw quicker. With a revolver it’s got single and double action mode for safety.
Bulldog makes a very nice belt slide holster for small, medium, and large frame revolvers. I carry my 629 in one all year round. It holds very close to your body and hides very well with a light button up shirt.
I like 44 magnums firearms. I have a smith carry comp with with rubber combat grips. The main reason why I like revolvers is ease of use. Glock and Springfield XD guns are cool but there is a learning curve when using one. Revolvers are simple to use when in a combat situation. They also tend to be more accurate.
A really nice for the money short 44 mag is the made by Taurus Rossi 2 inch barrel snub. I know people poo poo Rossi's but this is not your stepdad's Rossi. This is basically a Taurus Model 444 with a different grip and a 5 shot cylinder vs the 444's 6 shot cylinder and the Rossi name stamped on it.. It is fairly lightweight for a 44 mag and seems to be just as well made as the Taurus. Very easy to conceal and shoots nice with anything but 44 mag bear loads. I shot some HSM 305 grain bear loads through mine and the recoil was fairly harsh but most everything else I have shot through it is manageable . If you really need a 44 mag with a short barrel but you are on a budget you should give it a look. Retail price is around $370.00! BTW, great channel Marshal! Thanks for the vids.
That just makes it more awesome.
Those revolvers are fucking awesome
The .44 magnum 44 special combination of cartridges make for a very versatile handgun
I bought the 629PC in 44 mag because I couldn't anything similar in 45 LC...I carry 44 SPL in mine. Love it. It is a MONSTER with heavy magnum loads....sheesh
It seems like 44 SPL would be the way to go for carry. There is a lot of talk of 357 magnums being too loud and causing hearing damage. The 44 magnum would be that much worse. Making loud noises on the range when you have hearing protection would be fun too.
44 SPL is an extremely accurate little booger too. I love mine.
The only .44 magnum revolver that I could think of would make great concealed carry gun would be the s&w model 69 combat magnum.
Can you tell me the exact model of the one without rear sight please? I want it for woods protection I don’t need it for long range just last resort. I’ve been looking in the website and buds guns and I can’t find it. Thank you for the video and help.
Enjoyed your video. How about Holster options video for these little pups ?
You could also use a vertical or horizontal shoulder holster for your .44 Magnum.
I got a Kramer pancake holster in horse hide for my 629-5. It does work. And a long, untucked t-shirt does hide it. However, my wimp factor kicks in. My woods are rather more urban most of the time and something that fits in my pocket (the SW 638-2 38Spl will, although some people notice) is just more comfortable. Plus I'm not a fan of wearing belts. My Walther PPK/S also fits in a pocket nicely. But you need faith that a .380 ACP will stop a bad guy. The Walther also has no external slide lock.
theYankeeMarshall, I noticed a 624 in one of your videos which is one of my favorite guns. I was wondering what your thoughts are on 44 special.
I got a steel .38, I didn't know comfort until I bought a spring steel core, bull hide carry belt! It cost $69.99, but it's the best money I ever spent!
Could you tell me what holster you choosen for the new .44?
Thanks.
Do these guns have bad recoil? Do these short barrel 44 mags have a lot more recoil compared to lets say a Taurus judge, or a mid sized 45 1911?
The .44 is a great gun! Many years ago I carried a (S&W) Lew Horton 3" model 29. Shot it quite a bit with .44 mags but didn't carry it that way (due to muzzle flash, slow recovery times and the general excessive force thing) but with .44 specials it was accurate and very pleasant to shoot. Sorry I let that gun get away.
Excellent Video..
I have the .357 Magnum Performance Center version of this gun which holds eight rounds, not six. For EDC and self defense, I would think having the two extra rounds would offset the advantages of the larger round. Any thoughts from the group?
What do you think about Charter Arms Bulldog (current production)? S&W 296, 396, and Taurus model 445 are difficult to find.
Kudos to you sir! Good stuff'
Talk to Ray at Lobo Gun Leather. He made a sweet holster for my 3" 629 Talo. The price was very reasonable and it tucks the gun in tight.
I'd like to see what leather holsters your using, the ones that I have for my revolvers are wider then the ones I use for my pistols.
hello from the foothills of the blue ridge mountains in North Carolina. reloading for 42 years and holsters I didn’t like. I now make my own. I prefer the Roy baker pancake thumb break holster style. making them adjustable for barrel pitch. it’s not that hard to do . look it up on internet fit guns to you needs . I even have a holster that fits my suspenders w. hen fishing. it fits a Taurus spectra 380 auto . right where I need it. I can quickly get it if the need to shoot two legged snakes or snakes. with no legs . nana papa papa aka the hunter wishing you well.
Nice group of tools. 44 mag, pretty much 1 shot show stopper. Depending on your needs I stick to smaller rounds normally. But I do realize that my small guns might need a few clips to show stop a bear or moose. Me semi auto might double feed or jam. Keep it simple! I knew only 357 mag mainly. I always thought it seemed thin or light for itself. Overall not bad. I just felt like I wanted something more beefy. 10 mm looks good but I want a revolver 1sr.
I own a 629-6 .44 magnum...it's pretty cool.
What do you think about the Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan?
YM, I went and played the video back a few times. Sounded like you said it is a good carry gun? If I heard you correctly, excuse my first question please.
I like the pc model but I had to add better grips because my hands are large . This is my favorite revolver .
I love that 629! I really like the look of the unfluted cylinders.
Are there any quality/reliability/durability differences between fluted and unfluted cylinders?
I'm new to the wheel-guns, thanks!
Yeah, usually .44 Magnum and concealed carry don't go together, but looks like you make it work!
What holster would you recommend for a Rossi 462? I'm not even sure what frame size it is....
Loved it One of my carry revolvers A Taurus 44 special 5 shot I picked up new in the mid 90's . I would bet it is same size as your 6 shot 357 ,, Just a preference on my part A 44 a bit heavier then the 357 bullet .. yup a bit slower then the 357 as well .
@LivingChivalry I will try to film a quick one today if I get a chance. I should have some time. My youngest is with his grandparents so it is almost like having a day off.
@MrCleanerNash Yes, when they get back to a full crew.
Hey I have a question can someone please answer it for me and my q is with a revolver barrel is it grooved like a rifle barrel is or not I think some are and some aren't but I may be wrong on that also what is his barrel length here? thks from Sydney where it is raining and cold
You feel a web belt is more supportive than a heavy leather belt? I might have to look into that.
Well before high cap. Pistols we used revolver they were great! We just had to practice more now all we do now is pray and spray 17 or 20 rnds and shoot everything except the person were shooting at.
I have unusual dimensions and haven't started carrying yet (haven't had the money to take the gun+holster+belt plunge at once) but a 1911-sized 6 shots of hot .44 specials sounds like a pretty nice setup. If paired with a good holster and belt, hows the weight? the biggest downfall to concealed carrying large framed revolvers seems like the weight more than the dimensions.
great guns, worthy of every video review, but those boot grips are as impractical as you can get on a big bore revolver. small grip area, abrasive as all hell and elusive on the quick draw. yea those grips have their defenders, who've lost a pint of blood and an inch of skin before growing accustomed to them. good video, as usual
Add to that the BB .44 mag wadcutters, you've got a supreme self defense revolver.
Those have to be a beast to hold onto when firing. WOuld have love to see those on the range. I almost bought one a while ago and just could not justify it. Good vid.
Check out the Remora Holsters They should make one that fits or can make one.
love your holster for your 357 carry. what make / model is it ?
@FirearmPop I have a video up of me shooting buffalo bore ammo out of the shorter barreled one with one hand. You can really see the recoil. I am exaggerating the recoil a little though for the sake of the slow motion camera.
Love all your videos wondering if ever own or will own sig p232
I carry a 629-6 2 1/2 inch. I carry 44 specials in it for defense and use safariland speedloaders for reloads.
beautiful 44's man! thanks for sharing. Are you still sending the carry comp off to S&W?
love at first sight.
