Pellets are definitely NOT to be fed in an unlimited quantity! Read the directions on the side of the bag!! Hay is the most important part of their diet and is very critical to their gut health. The more pellets they eat the less hay they will eat. Hay should be given as an endless supply, and is their staple diet. Veg is very important too of course, but don't underestimate the importance of hay, they are hindgut fermenters, like horses, and require a lot of quality long stem hay! Fiber, fiber, fiber!

Jason 4321 having had horses, I know that hay can become moldy. Timothy hay is what piggies should eat. Fresh from the feed store. I am sorry your little pig died. You should try again after reading about them and cleaning your cage

this thread has been going for a while now with all the food questions. I used to have rabbits and I know that a bit of yogurt in the water plus blackberry leaves stopped diarrhea that they got from getting to go outside and eat grass.
With the Guinea pigs (5 of them) I give a salad every day in a cup sized bowl that consists of red leaf or green leaf lettuce and cilantro, with several pieces of two of the following celery, carrot, chopped snow peas, cucumber, apple, pear, strawberry, orange, kiwi, and melons (watermelon, cantaloupe or honeydew). I also feed one bowl of pellets in each cage (one has 3 girls and one cage has 2 boys) that holds about 2 cups , and I refill it when it is gone and wash the bowl. they get unlimited fresh hay from the Pacific NW where I live and buy it in half bales. Occasionally I give them a piece of corn on the cob to share and also occasionally i give them a half cup of old fashioned rolled oats in a small bowl next to the pellets. I have not had ANY health problems. Just sharing

It's kind of funny because my guinea pigs ignore baby carrots. All 3 of them. But they love the giant ones from the grocery store in a bag, and also those super skinny organic ones. I have to break them up for them to share and they eat them, but if it's a baby carrot, they will look so offended and not eat it lol. I have no idea why.

First time Figuring Out a Full Proof Diet for your piggies is more difficult than figuring out one for yourself😂 I remember when I was figuring out my diet for my piggies I literally had a panic attack because I wanted to do everything right and then I’d see something somewhere and be like ok I’ll do this for them and then see the total opposite somewhere else. For Example, I’d seen a few people feed Carrots everyday and that’s what I was doing and then I saw people saying no only feed a few times a week and I was so confused lol. Now I feed them carrots 3-4 times a week. There is so much contradiction everywhere, that really it’s up to one to decide after doing all the research what’s best and what works.

I eat a lot of fruit and veggies, so pretty much whenever I'm snacking I'll drop a couple of slices or something from my own fruit into their bowl for a treat. Unfortunately it's been a long time since I cared for guinea pigs, I'm definitely thinking of getting another pair. :3

The best way i have learned to cook guinea piggies is to spit roast them slowly but keep pouring a sauce of your choice over the meat until a delicious golden brown,i have a purpose made machine which can hold up to 6 piggies at once which is great if your having a few friends round. Some people prefer to eat them straight off the skewer like a kebab or corn on the cob but i prefer to remove the juicy meat and serve it on a bed of salad covered with lemon juice, mwah! Gorgeous!

So i plan on getting 2 little piggies soon. And being the over planner i am, ive made a eating schedule for them. (i will change it to accommodate how much/ what they like to eat) So always keep hay out 24/7 along with a water bottle for them changed daily with fresh water. I will fill up their food bowl with normal food pellets (all the same, no choice eating/selective eating and no seeds) in the morning, with the recommended amount on the bag. Then at night ill give them a cup of veggies, and some fruit each. Good feeding schedule?

Chance Seems pretty good but keep in mind that you should NOT give guinea pigs fruit every day, I fed my guinea pigs fruit 2 times a week and it was fine for me, 3 times a week would probably be fine too but I'm not sure.

When I was in high school we had a piggy. We fed him almost entirely on discarded outer leaves of head lettuce that we got for free at the supermarket. He also got large carrots. We never gave him pellets, and he got all his water from the lettuce and carrots. He never had diarrhea, and lived to be six years old.

    • @paigespetsshop

yeah outer leaves are better than the inside because they have more nutrition and less water.

I rarely give pellets, a good variety of veggies is enough to cover all needs. Pellets are usually imbalanced and can sometimes lead to kidney stones and other health issues. Also, when I give them pellets I don't give them using a bowl. I have wood shavings, and the guinea pigs have lots of fun digging around for the food :)

I've heard that baby carrots are treated with chlorine (correct me if I'm wrong) and that terrifies me so I haven't bought them since. I just buy big ol carrots and cut them up. I'm sure you can find baby carrots that aren't treated with chlorine but just to be on the safe side, check! :)

Try parsley (guinea pig crack). For dry food, Vitakraft Sun Salad seems irresistible to them, But limit the amount.

    • @peytonpoststhings5867
      @peytonpoststhings5867 8 років тому

Vitakraft doesn't make a good Guinea pig food. It contains seeds which, the hull, is a choking hazards.

My Boars are babies and have great pellets, they eat all of the colored pellets in their bowl, and they eat half of the regular timothy-based pellets. I feed them 2 containers of romaine lettuce, broccoli, red bell pepper, and carrots. they let me hand feed them and they always eat when i put the bowl on their ramp. Although, I do not recommend feeding your guinea pigs a variety of veg. maybe select 4 veggies to feed them and add additional hay and pellets

Heyooo! I have a question. So I recently adopted two guinea pigs. One is a runt, the other is normal. They're both boys, but there is one thing pretty odd. When I put them in their cage after adopting them, the normal sized one was very calm to put in the cage. But the runt was squirmy. When I set them in, I decided to leave them alone in my room for 2 hours to adjust to their new enviornment. When I came back, the runt was acting normal all the sudden and it was eating hay from the carrier thing but the normal sized guinea was in the hide out. So basically what I'm asking is why did they all the sudden switch roles in braveness?

brett oflaherty the main issue with alfalfa pellets is the fact that it's very rich and CAN lead to health problems, obviously they are exceptions to every rule.

+brett oflaherty I used to feed my piggies those types of pellets. They were just fine! I only fed them 1/8 of a cup per day, so it wasn't much calcium. Mainly they get hay and veggies.

I went to a guinea pig "specialist" and she didn't even know my guinea pig had scurvy... and he passed away because of that.

I am really sorry to hear that! Try again rather than be sad. Be sure to use pellets made for guinea pigs that have vitamin C added and not rabbit pellets. Also give timothy hay and a daily bowl of mixed fruits and veggies and it will work out fine. Sorry for your loss. (the fruits mine likes are apples, celery, carrot, cherry tomatoes, cilantro, cucumber, pears)
