But slower! Funny you mention it, I used to listen to ND: Scum and Sonny Sharrock's: GUITAR album all the time those years. The SHaggs are also pretty insanely great!
BTW, this was broadcast on TV. Europe had no problem broadcasting Jazz, including Free. Meanwhile, in America, you had to be part of some in-crowd to even know about this music.
hey, that's 6-string fender bass/baritone guitar Bill Laswell is playing ! the beatles had one of those for studio use, in case someone except mcCartney wanted to play the bass part of a song...
What's the matter? This is better than anything or anybody out today. These guys play their own instruments and they don't depend on Protools or any digital gimmicks to make their music!!!
I have to say this is not my genre of choice, but these guys were obviously REALLY into what they're playing; I like jazz, but this is way over my head.
Mark Somers I'll admit it wasn't a fair comparison. We're talking about two very different breeds of avant garde jazz. But this is great stuff nonetheless and I enjoy it more every time I hear it.
Are you talking about Zorn's group? That stuff is very good, but no Brotz and no Sharrock makes Naked City decidedly less hard to my ears - more like Angora Sweater City
no, it is a bass strung like a guitar: E A D G B E Bass is only 1 octave lower than guitar, not 2. But don't feel bad many people make this mistake for some reason.
I remember watching this the week you posted this on YT, 13 years ago now and that solo by Sharrock still gets me everytime, mad geniuses the lot of them
Now we're talking - logged on to this expecting some band playing a song and then saying - Sting used to be in our band you know - like some sort of saddo - but this is great.
fender bass 6, they were hated when released because they shipped with really low gauges and are just generally weird, but one of if not the first 6 string basses, with a weirdly small neck facilitating/necessizing the usage of smaller gauges... they came out 61-75 originally and I feel like you didn't see many people play them until after that initial production period somehow, and they were brought back, but the older runs are better wood and tone I hear.
Ahhhhhhh, yeah. I'm a sucker for a nice romantic ballad....
The difference between this and heavy metal is that, while neither of them ever seem to get to the fucking point, I'm actually enjoying this.
LMAO. Thatis so true
To see this kind of energy on the stage gives me chills.
I knew Brotzmann was a beast but holy mother of god listen to that guitar!!!
I knew jazz could get wild, but holy moly this hit me hard! And I thought experimental Metal was extreme... Jazz goes hard
It's like the Jazz version of Napalm Death.
DUH!!
But slower! Funny you mention it, I used to listen to ND: Scum and Sonny Sharrock's: GUITAR album all the time those years. The SHaggs are also pretty insanely great!
OFR My foot foot
You might enjoy Borbetomagus, check them out.
this is the best punk play ever:):)
Music speaks louder than words
Sonny Sharrock Lives!!!...4~Ever...
Excellent un son énorme une culture incomparable!
I DIDN'T WANT IT TO END! Thanks a lot for sharing this - totally amazing!
BTW, this was broadcast on TV. Europe had no problem broadcasting Jazz, including Free. Meanwhile, in America, you had to be part of some in-crowd to even know about this music.
Love it! Great group!
I love the audio quality of this through laptop speakers... So badass...
I watch this video once a week. Goosebumps every time.
hey, that's 6-string fender bass/baritone guitar Bill Laswell is playing ! the beatles had one of those for studio use, in case someone except mcCartney wanted to play
the bass part of a song...
Love at 2:30 how Brotzmann walks in like he is honking on a blues tune in a strip bar!
weaving in and out if dissonance, melodic tones, funk, jazz, rock and pure awesome, this is true musical freedom in the complete sense of the word.
That's a Fender Bass VI, which is basically a guitar with thicker strings that are tuned an octave below the notes a guitar are regularly tuned to.
My face just melted at around 5 minutes in.
Beautiful melodies :-)
What's the matter? This is better than anything or anybody out today. These guys play their own instruments and they don't depend on Protools or any digital gimmicks to make their music!!!
bill laswell is playing six string guitar on this. rad
Shannon Jackson Made this Band Rock the Houses.
That was awesome. Thanks a lot!!!!
wow Thank you!
peter brotzmann is the man
Do happen to have more of this performance?
@rillloudmother
yes you're right. it was intented to be used as a six string bass and the tuning corresponds to that of a standard tuned guitar.
genius!
Bill Laswell playing a Fender VI bass
crazzzyyyeahhhh!!
this is free form jazz
What do you think it would be like if these guys performed with Iggy Pop?
How FAR we've REGRESSED!!
What is the name of the song at 3:45?
Baby-makin' music.
I have to say this is not my genre of choice, but these guys were obviously REALLY into what they're playing; I like jazz, but this is way over my head.
this was sick, what was the song that had apparently ended at the beginning of the video?
yowza!
9:26
STOP MOCKING ME
@bobjazz11.....William Shakespeare's " Richard III "Winter of My Discontent"
Just out of interest, do you know what kind of channel this aired on in Germany?
Aptly titled... twisted beauty for twisted minds to ponder.
They should have named this song destination way , way, way, way, way, way, way out!!!!
Looks as if Bill Laswell is playing a guitar - strat?
As far as I understand thats a Fender Bass IV Baritone Guitar
anyone know what the drumming is saying at the end?
is that a fender VI?
They don't quite give Naked City a run for their money, but this is some great shit regardless.
Different story, I think Last Exit was and is unparalleled. Like Naked City too though, I never knew Bill F did that, so thanks for mentioning.
OrphanSeasun Yes, I was referring to Zorn's group, but I'm no good with names, so I don't know who Brotz and Sharrock are...
The Sax and Guitar player on this video. It´s right up there on the description...
This must have been DEAFENING. Friggin killer tho!
based
@cymbata
Well ... It can do that to you I suppose ...
This music music killed Sonny(sadly), made Peter crazy and sent Shannon into retirement!
@radiomix It's a lot of things, but bullshit it ain't.
3.47
brotzmans is terrifying
Vaguely resembles...music
No, not a big one...would have liked to have heard him with Monk or Mingus' (et al)bands to see what he could have done, though.
um.... what did i just see ?
These dudes have to be high as fuck to make this kind of crazy-awesome music.
W-T-F-?!
This is what happens when you bypass "the learning process". Good for a laugh... that's about it.
Benjamin L. You're kidding right...?
What the FUCK is this
anyone got the tab on this?
You just won the internet...
LOL!!!
Aha.
Looks as if Bill Laswell is playing a guitar - strat?
Fender Bass VI
Baritone guitar?
THAT IS NOT HOW SAXOPHONES ARE MEANT TO BE PLAYED
jk this is awesome
Sonny Sharock makes Hendrix look like a little child!
love the drummers nervous breakdown at the end
Indeed - at 9:26, does he say: "And don't fuck at me!"
I rhink Bill Laswell is playing a Fender Bass VI.
Exactly what i thought
It is
no, it is a bass strung like a guitar:
E A D G B E
Bass is only 1 octave lower than guitar, not 2.
But don't feel bad many people make this mistake for some reason.
is there a studio version for the tune w/ sharrock's solo? or is this just pure improv?
Take that, Eddie Van Halen- love and regards; Bill Laswell xxx
Sonny Sharrock was a great Guitarist. RIP we always miss you.
-Andrés
Pd.: 'II V I' is not here.
They shredded this gig
I understand these guys started out as a wedding band...
I remember watching this the week you posted this on YT, 13 years ago now and that solo by Sharrock still gets me everytime, mad geniuses the lot of them
It's not a baritone though, it is just a bass with an added high B and E string. At least in the intended tuning.
sonnys part is fucking unreal.has anyone ever seen him and jimmy in the same place at the same time???
@smilesgaveus
? i'd bet you a million dollars they played their instruments better than you.
Is this legal? maybe breaking some law?
...into dimensions uncharted... and yet, known ....
so cool seeing Sharrock play
Epic: "No 'II-V-Is here, I'm afraid"
i also find it kind of funny how it looks like the drummer is crying throughout the whole thing
As they said in Back to the Future, "Ah, that was very... interesting music"
Last Exit shreds
Who said an orgasm can't last for 9 minutes and 57 seconds?
If I get a song stuck in my head and I want it out, this is my new cure
"Peter Brötzmann"
The sax player is actually Peter Brötzmann, father of Caspar Brötzmann who recorded Zulutime with Page Hamilton of Helmet.
Now we're talking - logged on to this expecting some band playing a song and then saying - Sting used to be in our band you know - like some sort of saddo - but this is great.
That was insane!!
Wow takes incredible precision for RSJ to not smash that mic while drumming.
For anyone wondering, Bill is playing a '62 Fender Bass VI w/sunburst finish
Thanks for posting...would love to see them perform "Fire Drum" live if such a video exists
could anyone tell me what kind of bass Bill Laswell is playing here?
fender bass 6, they were hated when released because they shipped with really low gauges and are just generally weird, but one of if not the first 6 string basses, with a weirdly small neck facilitating/necessizing the usage of smaller gauges... they came out 61-75 originally and I feel like you didn't see many people play them until after that initial production period somehow, and they were brought back, but the older runs are better wood and tone I hear.
5:02-5:05 Coltrane-like lick. It's played in a sweeping motion like Trane would play it on his sax.
🎼RSJ Lives 4~Ever...Much Love To
The Family, Fox...
They were called Last Exit after all.
Never mind slap bass when you can spank guitar... :P
