  • Recently I have been thinking a lot about how we spend our time, mentally, physically and spiritually, and I’ve been feeling a need to slow down. So today I thought I would share what we’ve been up to this week and share how we changed our routine to live slower and more intentionally.
Thank you so much for watching 🌺

While listening to your sensible words about the pointlessness, or even destructiveness, of worry, even when you're out on a hike far from everywhere, I was reminded of a time, decades ago, when I was a summer camp counselor, leading groups of kids on days-long trips in nature. Too many of these kids, even ten-year-olds, could not let go of whatever was happening away from both our trip, and their time away from the world at camp. I'd see them frowning and not paying attention to the beauty and strangeness of things and places that I knew they'd never seen before. I understood the why for some of them, and I know you do, too: Some kids live lives of sadness, even terror. But for some, it was just the way they went through the world, always thinking about the might-have-beens and the should-haves, and the what-if-this-happens.
With these kids -- and with myself -- I learned to stress, 'Be where you are'. It became a sort of mantra for me, and a guiding thought for when I led these groups. Kids would end up saying it to themselves, and to their friends on the trips. It was simple, but not always easy, at least at first. But when it worked, I could almost see the weight falling off of their backs.
It's a good way to live all the time, letting go of worry, but life gets in the way, and it's not easy to do when at home. It's often hard to even remember it, let alone live it.
So, thanks for spreading the message. You are in a wonderful place; thanks for sharing your time and thoughts and feelings with us!

Another wonderful video. I live in the Swiss Alps and have travelled extensively - but have always wanted to visit NZ (lived in Oz for 2 years in the early 80s). Not sure I will get there as I am 71 and don't really want to visit alone - So many beautiful places and it seems quite expansive. I def will make it to Japan and the S. Pacific - My bucket list is small but I have to prioritise. its great to watch your travel vlogs as I really feel like I'm there - since you make them so personal. At the moment I'm living vicariously through you. Your video skills btw are getting better and better! and are really a joy to watch!! 🙏

That means so much to me - thank you! I’m trying to improve my skills and it can be trying at times when I’m not progressing as fast as I want to!
the Swiss alps is the place we hope to live in permanently one day. Do you find it a nice place to live?
I’ve lived in Japan and would say it’s one of the best countries to visit! My grandfather is hoping to maybe make it here next year, however he is 82 so it might not be possible. But if he can do it you still got plenty of time! ;)

Thank you for the update, Saga. It prompted this thought: that introducing some intentional friction in life can be very beneficial. In my own view, things have become a little too convenient at times in developed countries.
While it is in no way van living, one way I have done this in my life recently is with my smartphone. I have intentionally made it more difficult to use (I have removed a lot of apps, including email, and make a point of leaving it at home with calls forwarded to a 'dumb phone' on many occasions).

Thank you for sharing your thought, I really needed to hear this. Living in the van has definitely caused a lot of intentional friction. Cold showers is not something I now do for any reason, but out of necessity - they're the only showers I currently have available. And the mind is so quick to find routes of escape. And our bodies to. To escape from discomfort.
I recently read a fantastic article about breastfeeding, discussing the same issue. That we are told that everything is supposed to be comfortable, so women stop breastfeeding because it's not comfortable. But we've forgotten that it's not all about our comfort, and that doing selfless actions for others might be uncomfortable - but important.
Removing the smartphone is a fantastic thing. I have tried it a few times, but in the van I actually find it harder since we rely on it for "data-sharing" as internet. But I try my best - like you - to actually open the computer for emails, use the camera for photos, because it adds that little extra bit of resistance which means I'm much less likely to spend time in front of a screen.

@@SagaJohanna Yes, our situations are very different, in that you have both gone much more 'all in' than me. I suppose I am practising more voluntary deprivation in the way Stoics advised. So I might take cold showers for a month, or fast, not because I have chosen a life where the hot shower or the food is not available, but to lessen my attachment to comfort. I'm sure it will be a transformative experience though, that will stay with you for life whatever your living situation becomes.
For me the digital side of things has been amazing, even in the first couple of weeks. Cal Newport's book, 'Digital Minimalism', was an eye-opener. I hadn't realised (having gotten through school without a mobile phone) how dependent I had become on those little hits of dopamine. This will not be a temporary deprivation, but a permanent shift in lifestyle. And it's not even about depriving myself of comfort; quite the reverse, actually.
Completely understandable that you use the phone for data. Just as when I travel I will still use it for Maps and Citymapper in foreign cities, my boarding pass, etc. But I will use it intentionally, only when it adds real utility.
Edit: The other thing that has been transformative is to switch to checking the news only once or twice a week and, even then, very briefly.

If you think of slowing down as living in the moment, it doesn't make so much difference what it is you are doing. As long as you are present with it, not thinking or wanting anything else. Not always easy, I know, but worth giving a try
