I'm late to this video because we were just talking about them the other day. After reading the comments I feel compelled to leave this one. I have witnessed first hand the difference between having one of these and not. However things change in water every few feet or so. The best luck we had with it is to find the fish blips on the finder and then see how deep they were. Then drop the probe down to the appropriate depth of the fish and that will tell you what color at that depth you should be using to catch said fish. You can't just throw it in the water and think it will work. Like I said I've seen them work for someone who used it versus me using a random color lure. I was outfished from the get-go
Bubble gum trick worms were super hot for about two years on private 500 acre lake I grew up on in Indiana .Then you couldn’t catch crap on it. Went to green pumpkin and watermelon and game on again. Back in early 80s
I bought a Color C Lector back in the 1980s. I was skeptical at first, but I was convinced after trying it. I used it for trout not bass. The oddest color I tried for trout was Fire Tiger. One time I wasnt catching anything so I checked which colors were best. It gave me a few choices (green, orange, and yellow). The only lure I had with any of those colors was Fire Tiger which had them all. Within less than a minute I caught a trout. Everytime I used the Color C Lector I would catch fish. .
Had mine stolen a two years ago. I watched fishing shows every Sunday in the winter and remember when they first came out. Couldn’t afford one but bought one after I graduated college. Was fishing for crappies after work with some friends one day I got there a little late and they weren’t catching anything. I’ll see what color we should be using and in typical buddy fashion started getting a typical ribbing, I put the color selector to work and it “said” to use a purple/red I tied on a twister and started catching fish. Needless to say they didn’t say anything except for do you have anymore of those twisters for us. Not always spot on but sometimes you have to go across the color lines the needle recommends and get an idea of what color to use. Good video but more to the color selector’s ability .
I've caught trout with "Nuclear Chicken" My first bass was caught on a chartreuse with black flake stick bait. I've heard, "If it ain't chartreuse it ain't no use".
The unit can only be used in a boat!!! The light senser probe must hang vertical to get a proper color suggestion ! Works great for deep diving crankbaits and sinking rattle trap type fish lures in stained water !!! In 12 to 18 foot water it will show colors of purple, blue, red,or marroon to try in stained water.
So you ask about colors and odd ball lures at the end of the video, but I’ve been pretty narrow on soft plastic and colors the last couple years, but I can share my favorite line from an old guy in his 80s who used to advise me about bass fishing (he was a retired guide on the St John’s). He’d say you can use any color of worm to catch bass as long as it’s purple! Ha! Love the kooky history about Dr Hill and for the record I never know what color to throw.
I had a Color-C-Lector when I was around 14. It seemed like such a cool idea until I asked Doig Hannon his opinion on it at a fishing expo in Suffern, NY: he thought it was worthless since he’d get different values from just dropping it off opposite sides of the boat.
The Man in the Motorcycle Mask I never really got to try it because as a broke pre-teen I never had enough money to get the colors to use in a given situation. I did use Hannon’s book on patterns for different conditions, and tended to be successful.
The Color C Lector could work in theory, if the idea was to check how clear/dirty the water was. And then it could give you an idea of what color should be used as to be seen at maximum range. Different colors can be seen further underwater, under different conditions....so this concept makes sense. Which is what the marketing of the Color-C-Lector suggests the unit does. But according to the Color C Lector box, it measures water PH and temperature. Neither of which are relevant to the clarity of the water - which explains why you would get different readings on different sides of the boat. PH is just the acidity of the water. Anybody that's had a fish tank can tell you that the water can be perfectly clear, and PH of the water can vary dramatically. The idea of a color-suggestion tool would work better if it used an optical device of some sort to measure water clarity.
It does if you have some faith in it. Remember, it tells you what color a fish may see best. Not what color to use! That's up to you !!! By far my favorite worm to use is the brand culprit with a drop of Dr juice bass. In purple shad and green shad! Its action is unmatched ! Also the berkley power worm in the color of motor oil WORKS EXCELLENT !!! WITH PUMKIN SEED COLOR IN 2ND ! SAVE YOUR MONEY AND FORGET THE OTHERS !!!!!
If the pH sensor of the device is used in the calculation to determine color, then it would not work today. The reason is pH sensors are pretty fickle and require constant calibrating. Most pH sensors I work with need calibrating every 6 months depending on what they are used for. There are some that call for calibrating every use. So if it doesn't work today, it could be that almost 40 years later, the sensors are bad and/or need calibrating.
The instructions say you lower the probe till the probe goes out of sight and read the markings on the cable to determine if the water is clear, stained or muddy. Hard to do if you fish from the bank. But bottom line you just guessed at water but I think you guessed good. 😂
My buddy got the whole sha'bang back when it came out. Did we catch more fish, I can't say yes or no. After all that was awhile ago. But in one lake we fished they would bite better on silver, black or purple. In a river ten min. Away the color was silver or chartreuse.
carl mchale Rest assured I’ve got some “grape” flavored Jelly Worms! And what about that long list brown-and-orange color!? Don’t forget grape with white tail...
So how soon and or are you able to find or dig up these great old school fishing tools of yesterday? I loved the old pistol grip ugly stick rods very comfortable to fish with and the Abu Garcia reels nothing fsncy but got. The Job Done!!!
Watched your episode about the Combo C Lector. Nice! Do you have the owners manual for it? I got a unit off ebay, but I can't find a Combo C Lector manual that shows how to calibrate the unit. Thanks!
The old hooktail renegade worms in tamato core....dont exist anymore and i used to slay bass with them! Always bubble gum flavored and always $0.96 a pack at walmart.
@@RetroBassin Where do you find all that stuff?!?!? I have many baits you show but NOT IN THE ORIGINAL PACKAGING. Damn. You have them in the original package.
Sorry,I can not help it.using a decent med. Heavy 6 foot rod and a good lower hanging spinning reel (not a weak $10 spincast reel) with #2 trueturn brand worming hooks will increase your hook setting 500 percent !!! Set the hook hard and fast.the fight is on.
The number 1 question fishermen ask is: "How deep?" The Ph meter on that unit answers that question. Ph has a direct correlation to oxygen asimilation. A 2 - 10ths Ph jump, indicates the depth.
Quit fishing like Nancies and get closer to the water. You shouldn't be banging those fish around on the rocks like that. They should never touch the ground. Sheesh

I had one stolen out of my boat and after that I saw "Red" !
Wish I still had mine! Mowed many lawns and cleaned pools to afford it.

Just bought a color-c-lector. Would love to see more episodes diving into these. I'm fascinated by its popularity then decline.
I wanted that color selector so bad when I was twelve. Fell for the whole thing and many of others. Luckily I was 12 and could barely afford baits.

I forgot that line, Dave!
Chameleon color was the most unique color that I fished. Usually lizards or a curly tail grub.

Still use my Color-C-Lector. Almost always start out with what it recommends. Favorite color would be Chartreuse + X.

For the record, I STILL don't!
Been waitin a while for this one 👍👍👍 love the vids keep it up.
Thanks, David! Definitely need to continue the challenge with Color-C-Lector hard baits...
I don’t fish much anymore but my main ones were blue/chrome/bright pink. Lures. It seemed. Once in a while a yellow or gold
Had one when they first came out ; it was helpful specially with changing blades & skirts on spinner baits in the old days
Daniel Evans What year? Thanks for tuning in, Daniel!
1985 is when l started using it

Blue has been the secret worm color since the Johnson Fiskar II 512 was popular.

Oddball color, double silver, Tommy Biffle taught me that years ago.

My crazy color is a yum Christie craw in tin foil and it slays bass
I have one of these! Haven’t used it in 25 years…
You watch the probe from invisible to 3foot 6 foot clear, stained and muddy
What about the old school fishing rods such as the old ugly stick? Or old round reel Abu Garcia's ?

Bass assassin has a color called new penny it’s crazy looking but works great!
Let's not forget Electric Chicken also by Bass Assassin! That was my #1 striped bass color on the Chesapeake Bay...
Lol I swear the fishing companies have the best names for stuff
New penny is an excellent salt water color

I just got a multi-c-lector downrigger from an auction. Cant find anythinf about it
Would love to see that!
I have a combo - c- lector with temperature and PH test never used it
Roland Martin hawked this product for a good while back in the day.
Btw just picked one of these up in a collecting first time ever seeing one
Motor oil ribbon tail worm, by Zoom. It worked in stained muddy water, but seemed to disappear in clearwater.
I was just giving a color selector but not sure how to power it wonder if it works musky fishing lol I haven't bass fished in years...
thats a nice old 4 notch 202 zebco i got one
Purple! I like a old diamond purple worm
let me know of lures your looking for from the 70s. i would lend them to you for a review.
I guess i need to fix the battery wire on mine
Yes, and be prepared to never throw green pumpkin! Haha
Glad you found the video!
How do u change battery for this
I'll be honest.. all my plastics are either silvery, greenish or blackish. I need to dive into wierd colors.
You know how most the t-shirts in your closet end up being the same color? I think that happens with our "favorite" lure colors as well...
Jimmy Houston promoted that damn thing. It was a joke. IMHO.
I think I need another day on the water with it!
