Spyro Gyra - Old San Juan (Live)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 січ 2012
- Due to early CD time constraints, the best track from Spyro Gyra's "Access All Areas" double live LP was omitted. A Jay Beckenstein composition.
Jay Beckenstein - Saxophone
Tom Schumann - Keyboards
Kim Stone - Bass
Chet Catallo - Guitar
Eli Konikoff - Drums
Dave Samuels - Marimba & Vibraphone
Gerardo Velez - Percussions
This is my favourite song by them
Hay really nails it here.
The band was in my beloved 🇵🇷 and Jay missed his flight home. It also happened to be his 30th birthday so, he took a cab to Old San Juan and composed this masterpiece.
That guitar solo is pricelessly contrasting the saxophone and enriching this piece.
glad this is up here. it was left off the Cd which pissed me immensely as this is the best song on that live album. thanks for posting!!
This is one of My favorite Songs of My entire Life ❤
Wow! Anyone still listening to this? Oct. 20, 2021 pandemic times. Heard this way back in 1992, my cousin had a tape with an Alternating Currents cover, but the tape inside was actually an Access all areas album. Great memories of Oman, my band worked there for half a year in '92. Great album! Thanks to you uploader for having this here. Cheers and keep safe everyone 🙏
I have to say in all my years on this planet that this song stands the tallest. TY S.G.!
i love how eli konikoff checks every one's time with some drum stick clicks around 0:58
had this on vinyl, back when. spent a lot of headphones time with spyro gyra as a kid. this is *such* a great track ... i'm so old, i didn't even know it'd been edited away from the CD release
loved everything about Incognito, and the studio original, but this live take on Old San Juan is such a total thing of beauty.
this is a fantastic double LP vinyl release -- my geezer ass hadn't gotten the memo that the whole thing hadn't been marketed in digital format.
lame AF
So spiritual how he developed this song and especially on his birthday priceless
THANKS! I was shattered when the CD left out "Old San Juan" - Beckenstein's best tune ever in my opinion.
The MFAs at MCA should have been put in public pillory for the omission. The wankers at Geffen did the same with Peter Gabriel "Plays Live", but at least that was also released as two CDs.
"I was shattered when the CD left out "Old San Juan" " Yes, yes, yes!!!
yesssss indeed!! i also have this as one of my lifetime super favorite songs - and albums and firing guitar solos! And i remember also when buying the CD its missing ... and just now, it came in back of my head, amd missing the whole album in total today while copying between deezer and spotify on both :-7 thanks a lot!!!
I WENT TWO TIMES SPYRO GYRA CONCERTS LIVE IN MALAYSIA🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾
Could this just be the best spyrogyra live album ever.they just came out for this one .goodness me.fantastic
This track was the opening track of the Concert & it really was bottling lightning ….
from 00:00 to 1:29, the intro segment is just so ethereal & ambient capturing the emotions like in heaven…
you can just close your eyes & hug the music if that was ever possible ….
Perfect Record … & it was “live”… lighting captured in a bottle …
Thank you Spyro Gyra & Mike Mezz…
😍👍🤩👍😍
This the best version of Old San Juan that i've ever heard it.
The old San Juan, gives you a unique feeling of joy and freedom .In the lates 60s until the 70s we played Latin jazz music in a club called the place where I met many jazz musicians from that were traveling.
RIP Dave Samuels
Thank you for posting.
I was so disappointed when this was not on the CD. My favorite song on that album.
Exactly my feeling, when I got older. I was fortunate enough to have the album, but that was a very long time ago. SO great to hear this again!
Yes, I feel the same! I don't know why they omitted this song.
Agree, I have the LP and the guitar solo is my favorite part.
@@bobm6352MCA didn't see the wisdom of a second CD for one extra song with the added price. Jay took the hit within one of his own compositions so the others wouldn't get screwed on royalty points. By removing Old San Juan, the single CD contained the maximum amount of music@ 79 minutes.
@@dylanchangedeverythingfore1312 What's your source for the royalty explanation? I always wondered why. Thanks!
Fantastic track, and a crime it doesn't appear on the CD. Thanks for posting!
Bravo. Obrigado!
Good band lineup....I saw these guys live literally a dozen times between '79-85. After Chet left the group, something was lost, honestly. His guitar voicings were never replicated by any other git players they used, and his voicings made a major contribution to the original Spyro 'sound'.
Combination of Chet, Eli, and Gerardo on same stage was always magic, live.
This composition tells you how do you feel when you see those 500 years ago , narrow bricks streets with old well preserved structures , believe me because I worked in Old San Juan.
YEAHHHHHHHHH its here......Search & you will Find.....Thank you Mike Mezz...you are definitely Divine sent....
Thank you for this. I thought I'd never ever ever hear this particular track again. I really missed it.
Fantastica ...il mio primo album Fusion che comprai nel 85
It was introduced to Spyro Gyro at the pub called Paparazzi at the Workshop in the early 1990s.
Это супер! Я это слушаю 32 года))) И это лучшая версия!
I used to love this on vinyl and it pissed me off to no end when they didn't put it on the CD. Thanks so much for posting, this is a classic.
Such a poor decision to not release this on the CD. I have both the LP album and the CD.
Tom Schuman's fingers should be insured by Lloyd's of London! Love Chet Catallo's guitar solo. Tom Schuman's piano break is sick! TERMINAL! Then Jay brings it home, what a great singing saxophone player Jay is first and foremost... He always has virtuoso chops but enjoys singing just as much as doing those impossible runs!
Thanks for sharing it! I only had this unbelievable version on an old cassette tape...couldn't listen to it for ages....Now it is brilliantly refreshing my MP3 shuffle.....Spyro Gyra at their best!!! I'm enjoying it from Italy.
thanks for sharing. this is a brilliant one.
a real masterpiece..........
thank you Mike! Been looking for this track forever and lost my cassette tape. Couldn't find the CD either...
Chet Catallo reminds me a lot of John Tropea. So sharp, funky and latin!
bro, your contribution is priceless! otherwise I wouldn´t ever known
j'aime bien!
CD time constraints my foot. I smell a conspiracy! This track is way to hard to find! Thanks Mike! Memory rush here I come!
so you're telling me instead of paying $15 or $20 for a single CD you would pay 30 or $40 for a double CD that only included one extra song???
Not on CD? glad I still have the LP!
Jazz at its best!!! Iconic piece after jazz no. 5. Saludos
Go to the official Spyro Gyra website, you can download the mp3 of this song for free to finally complete the album.
+C RB It's about time. But I listened to it, and it's recorded too slow.
thank you so much. So Much. A lost pearl.
This is on my vinyl copy and apparently not on CD...its the best side of a very good set.
Spyro Gyra at their best
OH MY GOD 0:02 - 0:37 will be sampled, period.
Tout cela me rappelle ma jeunesse... very goog happy music!
Awesome live!
Missing the old San Juan ! Great Song Brother ~ love
Me too! We saw Spyro Gyra live there too.
Precious Times that will always live in our hearts and soul 🎸 My Dear Brother 🎸 Big hugs Al ✌️
Love this, it's a shame that the CD version left this opener off due to time restraints!
un vero peccato non sia stata inserita nel cd..è il brano più bello dell'album !!!
iTunes doesn't have it either. Obviously, there are no time restraints with mp3. This could be brought back if Apple wanted it.
LPじゃ持ってるけどCDには入ってないもんね~この曲での始まり方が気に入ってたのに。。
Mike Thanks!!
Mike, have you ever heard of any place other than the LP to get a copy of Old San Juan from this album? unfortunately, I didn't discover spyro gyra until after the digital age had taken over in 1989.
I liked the original version, it was great, from the album 'Incognito' that's when Steve Gadd, drumming, was at his peak.
Ah jay
Does anybody have an idea how to get the mp3 file of this track?
Man, I'd forgotten all about this track. I have the CD of this album in my collection and this track was omitted completely. The liner notes say, "In our effort to bring you the original albums for the cost of a single CD,one selection has been omitted." They never even said what it was. Thanks for posting, man. Somebody tell Amherst to fix this rip off , because that's what an incomplete album is : a rip-off.
MCA would have gotten a lot more flack back in the 1980s have they put a second CD with one track on it and charged double the price.
So they omitted one track so they could sell a single compact disc and not have to listen to The whining of people who complain that the price of a double CD only brought them one extra song.
im the youngest among the listeners of jazz :D
I actually know this composition from the "Spyro Gyra: Collection" CD - it's my favorite! But this live version is great - what performance is it from?
It was originally on the double live album from 1984 titled "Access All Areas". This track was cut from the CD release due to lack of space.
a crime
planets danny Yeah!! They had no choice. The record label just took out the longest tune😓
I believe this was in Miami 1983
Why did Chet leave?
they dont have this on CD, ive got the album and the cd, this song doesnt appeared on the Cd, Why i dont know politics
the record company didn't want to double the price of the album for one extra song so they cut a song out and put 79 minutes of music on a single CD. Jay beckenstein took the hit taking one of his own compositions off of the live album so that the other members wouldn't lose points for royalties of the record sales.
I should write a letter of protest to the record company to include this cut on the cd .
the hum, turntable not properly grounded.
Yeah, but in a way it adds to the allure of the time-travel aspect to those days in our memories from when and where we first sipped the colors of sounds from that performance.......if that makes sense to you, than you're as drunk as I am (knowwhatimean?)
Excellent arrangement although the guitar solo is a tad unremarkable.
