I just built my new PC in the past year. Literally the ONLY reason why I put Windows 10 on it is because there aren't enough games that can run on Linux.
That's literally the only thing that kept me from dumping Windows for good.

I went straight from Windows to Arch linux, and I have to say, it's way better than Windows. I got Monster Hunter World and some other games running under proton in not too much time.
also appabend, there's efficient alternatives for each thing you just listed at the beginning of the show:
-Davinci Resolve or Kdenlive -Libre Office has a powerpoint-like, -Proton is actually scary good at making windows games run on Linux.
edit: *You tried Linux. YES!* Please just try any of them right now in a Virtual Machine if you hate windows.

Tried arch and fedora and it's almost flawless till I wanted to plug stuff on my pc like printers and stuff, it almost never worked because propiertary drivers are a no-no, and when they were compatible it was always a lesser experience than in windows. Ubuntu gives a better experience overall even if people on the internet tend to talk crap about it

@@aDumbHorse tbh, I'm just happy that people can actually use any distro away from Windows. I'm using arch mostly for video editing (haven't installed it yet tho) and gaming. And gaming has been fine so far disregarding that I haven't been able to get rumble working, but that seems to be the issue of using a Xbox Series X 3rd party namebrand controller that is being registered as a generic Xbone controller in steam.

While id agree, this isnt a Windows exclusive problem, this is a OS problem in general. Most OS designers have a issue with "feature creep". Meaning they let the features they think are cool or interesting to make dictate just how much hardware the OS will require. And again this isnt JUST a windows issue, Mac does it, Android does it, EVERYONE does it.
Now do they need to force the updates to a new OS on us? FUCK no they dont, its the usual "We know what you want better than you do" mentality that has come about in WAAAAAAAY to many Tech development companies as of the last 15 years.

Yeah, last time I opened the task master and for about 5 minutes watched and laughed together with my girlfriend at just how much stuff my computer was doing. All on it's own, with no benefit to me whatsoever, without me doing anything other than having opened a wordpad and typed...nothing.
There were like 125 or so programms running just to get window itself and my wordpad on the screen.
I remeber the days where it took maybe 10, 35 at worst.
I wad laughing like "Look, the computer doesn't even need me. It apparantly has plenty to do without any need of my input. In fact, it feels like my input is only getting in it's way more oft than not."

But yes Linux is great. Most people using old machines for basic things like using browser and maybe old games working great on wine/dosbox. Emulators also have Linux version, and they are faster in a lite Linux system than a full Windows system.

We must all band together as not just gamers but computer users and make the switch to Linux. Linux distros need to do their part to help intake new users, mainly in my opinion by providing easy to understand tutorials on Linux, how to not break things and the command line language. I know this isn't ideal but for the interim and ultimately a super stable distro with a bunch of built in tutorials, highly compatible with large amounts of hardware and software and a large amount of development support is best but anything to aid in gaining new users right now is key to strike while Micro$oft's mistakes are hot in peoples minds.

I applaud you, not just for resurrecting the potato with Linux, but for actually trying out several distros and desktop environments. Most people I know will just pick up one (usually the most complicated one, because that's what the nerds spout most about), try for 20 minutes and get frustrated at the first hurdle (which can be anything from installing an obscure printer down to the layout of the launch menu being different), and then just whine how horrible Linux is.

1:20 if that is the case, I'm going to strongly disagree on your assessment that Windows is "slow" so to speak. I'm not in IT, but if that is the case, it means that the IT department didn't do it's bloody job. My laptop is a ~decade old by now, second hand HP 2670P. Windows 10, Sandy Bridge i5 mobile chip, and it is fast and responsive. Heck, even modern versions of Solidworks and Mastercam works relatively fine (CAD/CAM software, so it isn't the easiest to run). A few weeks back I serviced a Haswell mobile i3. By the end of it, it worked fast for a mechanical drive with a not so good Windows 7 to 10 upgrade in place.
Let me be very clear, I strongly dislike Windows, and I do agree to a big extent that it is elitist. Linux is also another kind of elitist in some aspects, but that is another topic. Linux is fast than Windows in general, that is absolutely true. Microsoft asinine moves do not help, like the TPM you commented, or spiking a PC usage with poorly timing on updates, and not reducing their priority. But, in regard of that kind of speed, it is user error most of the time. It does consume more than Linux, (specially with 2Gb of RAM) but not "outlandishly" after a decade. I cannot fully comment on Win11 yet, since I haven't suffered it daily (I'm in no rush to upgrade since everything works beautifully)
The main problem from Win 8 onwards (and I'd dare to say Win7) is that you *must* use an SSD and preferably +6Gb of RAM, which is not expensive in the grand scheme of things (you could get away with 4Gb if you don't let crap run rampant, but average users do, so...). Most of the time, those lower tier PC don't have that SSD, because a higher capacity number is better marketing when users don't even use a tenth of said space. And for that HP netbook, some to blame is Microsoft more than Windows itself, and some is Intel/MS partners, as when they designed the "notebook" concept, the PC specs were half-assed at the very best. Those CPUs, being generous, are pathetic, and it will run *almost anything* like crap, Linux included (my point of comparison is an Aspire One D270, another Atom netbook).

This is what they call planned obsolescence. Forcing people to buy new systems every few years. The greatest thing I hate about windows is the updates. They absolutely suck taking on average 6-7 hours to complete. As a software engineer I too can't avoid windows but the way it performs leaves a lot to be desired.

I f*cking despise PCs and the windows systems for them. As a Mac user for 3 decades I'll suggest that using a PC is like trying to build a jet with an Erector Set or with a sky scraper with Legos. Macs are swift, intuitive, powerful and easy to learn while PCs and these God awful Windows systems require a friggin' PC tech to change settings.
I was forced recently to purchase a PC for the simple reason that my client uses Access and my Mac could manage it with a Parallel's type OS set but it could not manage it well. I've been a businessman and entreprenuer for over 40 years and this instance is the only time Ive ever had to use a PC. What a serious POS/POJ/POF pcs are.

I really should upgrade to Linux, I just haven't gotten to it yet. I feel bad for all the people with older laptops, or the ones that can only afford laptops that Windows will not upgrade to, which just goes to show how out of touch they are with their consumers these days. The 1 thing I absolutely hate about Windows 11 though is that you have to go through a lot of hassle just to sign in, which is just beyond stupid, and the fact that, at least on my computer, it tends to freeze very frequently especially when I'm watching UA-cam videos, whenever I open my laptop back up to sign back in, and replay the video from where I left off, said video will randomly freeze up while the audio is still playing, with my only option of restarting the laptop, it's ridiculous. I guarantee that 11 was never tested. Fuck Windows.

I've never stayed up to date with Windows simply because of the early adopter issues and my own stubbornness. I still have copies of windows install discs since 95. And am well familiar with using old versions well past their end-of-life. New programs won't be compatible but if you run a potato or old computer, you're probably not going to have a good time with them anyway. If I needed to run a true potato I would run maybe even XP. Whatever it can pull off smoothly. Even my monster PC (i7 8700k + GTX1080) I am still staying on 7 for because I know Windows 10 is a violation of human rights disguised as an operating system. Hell, all the work computers in my company's to service department (computer repair) run Win7.

Let me say this, only mentioning Deb/Ubu distros kinda hurts, but it's ok, they're good enough, but let's not forget Arch and all the Arch based distros, overall, Linux is the future, steam is making Linux greater and greater in regards to gaming, Wine as well, valve pushed some updates towards kernel that will further help with gaming recently, I honestly don't get how people can suck that proprietary D of Microsoft and defend all that e-waste they're forcing now, that enviorment crowd seems awfuly quiet too about that, which is odd

Actually you can run windows 10 in semi-potato pc. Little knowledge on registry and tampering is highly not recommend further down the line.
Using destroy apps like "destroy windows spying master" especially for annoying forceful updates; Might broke some intended features like cannot launch Halo master chief collection properly for example. Using Advance system care, "SpyBot anti beacon" to turn off additional unwanted background memory consumption, regular deleting hidden temp folders from main windows installed hard drive, shut down all unnecessary start up apps, shredding/delete windows hidden downloaded windows update installer. That's my experience, others may vary.

hey appa, windows is horrible,. my laptop has win7 for a reason. the biggies issue these days with old laptops is youtube on browsers, it's performance is atrocious and be ready to die if you don't get any video acceleration on it.
here a tip. download potplayer, it supports youtube links out of the box. you that way you can watch videos in high quality or just "watch them" with better performance.
example pot uses 70%cpu to watch 1080p60fps, while firefox or chrome kill the entire system, not chance at all.
dude, 20%cpu vs 70% on 720p. browsers are trash at watching videos.

I also hate Windows, but even more than that, I hate Linux the most!
Linux has a very clear and unobstructed path to success in dethroning Windows, but its developers are far more interested in disputing against each other over infinite distros and which one is "better" while they refuse to do the one thing people who want to get rid of Windows need - they refuse to make a single OS without any distros or variations that can everything Windows does without having the need for a Linux university!
I mean, seriously, even Mint that is the closest build to Windows I've seen gave me tons of headaches because it refuses to follow Windows conventions that actually work! I couldn't even see what programs I had installed, I couldn't get certain programs to install via the custom installers, and it was a nightmare to make the Terminal work in my favor, and what pisses me off is that every forum tutorial starts by "open the Terminal and put in this code, then this code, then that one code, then another code" BUT THEY NEVER TELL YOU NEED OTHER CODES TO MAKE THESE WORK!!!
And the fact there are so many distros means programs need to be tweaked to work with every one of them! Some programs run better on Ubuntu, others run better on Mint, then there all the other distros and you never have a proper compatibility list with the programs you need! If there was only ONE Linux OS, this wouldn't be a problem whatsoever!
I want to get rid of Windows, I want to like Linux, but Linux just isn't compatible with games and work-related programs I use! For crying out loud, they have the butter, the knife with butter pre-applied and the toast on a plate accompanied by a video instruction on how to apply butter to the toast, and yet Linux developers still manage to get their dicks stuck on the ceiling fan!

    • @AshnSilvercorp
      @AshnSilvercorp 2 роки тому

Tbh a ton of it goes back to the user to want to learn too. Even mint will have things you need to troubleshoot in the terminal.
Linux by nature requests users to get to know the innards of their OS a bit more. It's if you want control over your PC.
If you hate the KDE or GNOME desktop, you can disable it and install a different floating window manager.
You don't have to follow everything your distro does.
Has it been bad for newer users? Yes. But that's because Linux is full of developers with different visions. No one of them has total control over what Linux becomes. Most of that remains user-side.
That's a plus with how forceful windows has been.

    • @TwilightWolf032
      @TwilightWolf032 2 роки тому +1

@@AshnSilvercorp "Has it been bad for newer users? Yes. But that's because Linux is full of developers with different visions. No one of them has total control over what Linux becomes. Most of that remains user-side."
Exactly, Linux is full of developers doing what they want, mostly prioritizing what they feel is important rather than what users who want to switch from Windows to Linux need.
If a bunch of Linux developers got together and made an entirely new Linux OS, let's call it... Linux Final, just for the sake of this argument, and focused on making THE OS people jumping from Windows will flock to, focusing entirely on bringing as much of the Windows experience to Linux as possible, without any of the headaches and arbitrary restrictions Microsoft implements, Linux Final could easily dethrone Windows 11 in a matter of 2 or so years. Just release the system and say *"this is the OS for those sick of Microsoft's bullshit!"* And deliver on it, obviously.
Users are willing to put in the effort to learn how their new OS works, especially power users, but when you have 50 distros with subdivisions between them (I remember Mint had Cinnamon and other 3 or 4 options when I tried it out), you're putting way too much homework on someone who just wants to give Microsoft the middle finger.
