I loved my 70's SG. After 30+ years still regretting parting ways with it.

I made a custom sg with a basswood body maple neck and rosewood fret board. Got that action super low left it as raw wood. It is a amazing guitar.

Love the fugazi shoutout! They too are the reason I became curious about SGs but absolutely didnt expect them being mentioned here :)

Oh man, several of us here grew up on Fugazi... and Rites of Spring and Gray Matter and so on, the whole DC thing.

I appreciate the back and forth banter and all, but wouldn’t it have been great if you guys had actually done a bit of comparison playing between these two guitars? *sheesh*

Many of the Kays were made of Plywood, I had a single pickup Kay "Sg" made in the 70s the body was thinner but had a similar neck. Stripped the hardware and put Gibson copy Bridge Tailpiece and DiMarzio Pickup in Bridge position where there was no routing for that, My first Frankenstein...

Looking at purchasing a Kay-1 on fleabay - but not sure it's for me after this review. Sounds pretty grunge which isn't really what I need - looks cool as tho!

Hard opinion: I aesthetically prefer the ripoff/clone SGs to SGs themselves. I own a white 1966 Kalamazoo KG-1, and it plays, looks and sounds like a dream. Has its own charm.

the design, indeed, is very much first 60's: try to think of the horns of the SG like the fins of cadillacs and other cars of that period...

SG stood for “Spanish guitar” not solid. ES models from Gibson stood for “Electro-Spanish”.
