  • Beautiful DWR footage of the reopening of the main spillway at Oroville. Bonus footage from Carrizo National Monument family vacation..."superbloom" from so much rainfall this year.

    I've been all over the US doing disaster relief work, and this is just the kind of local info you hunger for. But you never see this much efficient objectivity and direct transparency. And your camerawork's really good, really good. So thank you and keep on.

    Nothing else quite like the beauty of California!
    Hey Juan, it would be a great public service to document the Berkeley Mystery Walls, aka East Bay Walls from the air. They're ancient drystone walls that traverse the hills of the East Bay area. Nobody knows anything about who built them or why. They don't have any obvious purpose and predate any California culture known to build in stone. Now during the superbloom would be an excellent time to explore them. It would be informative for someone to map them out, see how extensive they are and where they go.

    Explanation of headcutting erosion. Water poured slowly from a cup dribbles down the side. Tip the cup up sharply and only a drop or two runs down the side. Get those gates open quickly and overshoot the lip of the damaged concrete. Less headcutting.

      @johnlucas2037 7 років тому

      Why didn't they place more shotcrete....? seems like some more shotcrete anchored to the slope would have helped a lot... looks like the water is splashing back under the damaged spillway... hope that soft rock holds up..

    • @bobsmoth7837
      @bobsmoth7837 7 років тому

      John. The operative word there is "anchored". They needed the base to dry out as much as possible. The shotcrete is simply to keep water from soaking into the clay and having it slide down. There is not structural strength to it.

    • @johnlucas2037
      @johnlucas2037 7 років тому +2

      I agree +Bob Smoth it's basically a barrier between the rushing water and the loose rock and soil... if water get behind it then it's not going to work.. However it's quite common to use shotcrete for retaining walls.. when this is done it needs to have a rebar grid and to be anchored against the hillside / slope by rock bolts and soil nails... s3-production.bobvila.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/shotcrete-retaining-wall1.jpg

    When 35,000 CFS outflow down the damaged spillway began at 10am on 04/14/2017 the lake elevation was an even 866.00 feet. Inflow was 31284 and rainfall total was 46.38 inches.
    72 hours later, three days on 04/17/2017 at 10am:
    - Lake elevation is 862.81, down 3.19 feet, an average of 1.063 ft per 24 hours.
    - Average inflows for that period is 27,575.5 CFS - 35,000 CFS outflows gives a net outflow from reservoir of only 7,724.5 CFS.
    - New rainfall of .77 inches during same period
    Effective outflow of approximately 8,000 CFS appears to drop the lake elevation by one foot per 24 hour period.
    At the above effective outflow rate, it will take nearly a month to drop the lake elevation to 835 feet.
    One could surmise that increasing the outflow by 8,000 CFS to 43,000 CFS could reduce the time to drop the lake to the magic 835 foot elevation by 15 days or more.

    But then, you got to the Carrizo Plain from Monterey? One of my faves! The San Andreas Fault sculpts the east side of that valley from end-to-end.
