I love Alice and totally get why she doesn’t want to get involved and dig deeper into all this spooky stuff…BUT the audacity to call Sam crazy for thinking they might be being recorded when she literally heard a drowned woman reciting a soliloquy and they believed her without hesitation! I get she doesn’t want him to end up paranoid like Collin but at this point they either need to quit this job or stop pretending like they aren’t working for British SCP!
Being fair, I don't think she doesn't know something is up. I think she explained it very well last episode: if there isn't a way to stop it or prevent it, then the only thing ir will lead to will be madness. She's actively trying to stay as away of everything as possible and wants Sam to stay away too because she knows is the only way to be safe. Specially the way she says "Idiots" here. Not madmen, not paranoid, just... idiots. People who just don't know what they're getting into
@@AshNRoses4409 I 100% agree with you. Alice has been there the longest and is by far the most jaded and cynical. I think she definitely knows way more than she's saying and has figured out that a very viable survival strategy is just to keep her head down and keep quiet and hope nothing too spooky notices her. I absolutely think she's doing her best to steer the others down the same path, but they're all too caught up in the mysterious eldritch horror of it all to damn well listen!
@@WhimsicalBlades Agreed. I get the vibe that her increasingly fervent 'don't look behind the curtain' routine is more out of desperate terror than frustration and indifference. If the plot ever calls for an inverse avatar of the Eye (refuse knowledge at any cost), she's a shoe-in. Are inverse avatars a thing in this world? Maybe. :3

I love how Magnus turns real historical figures into major characters vital to the plot. For example:
Robert Smirke was obsessed with categorising and containing evil forces using his architecture.
Edmund Halley is possessed by darkness and wants to turn off the sun.
Joseph Grimaldi is a transgender mannequin and wants to skin you.
And finally in this episode: Isaac Newton was a crazed alchemist that could turn dogs into metal tree monsters.

I think the metal tree monster was meant to be like the tree of knowledge, he ate from the fruit and than he looks at the person like he KNOWS him.
Don't forget that Wilfred Owen's war poetry was so visceral and impacting because he made some sort of pact with "The War" itself.

If I had a nickel every time the Royal Society and Isaac Newton turned up around a Magnus series I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice (TMA 140/ TMP 19)

1. Celia is looking into alchemy, folks! _YES!!!_ Alchemy came up so much in the ARG, so I’m really excited that we’re finally starting to get into it in the series proper!!! (Also the fact that Sam recognized a bit of it from his research into the Magnus Institute, is definitely going to come in handy later, I’ve no doubt)
2. I’m so proud that Sam is starting to notice something is up with FR3-D1. He was talking to Celia about alchemy and the Institute, and FR3-D1 gives him a case, specifically about alchemy, and mentioning “The Protocol”, which Sam knows is connected to the Institute, somehow. Yeah, I’d be getting suspicious, too. 😅
3. We have confirmation that the OIAR does actually work with Starkwall, at least on occasion! Based on episode 7, Starkwall seems to target supernatural occurrences, like TMA’s Section 31, only a lot more organized and a lot more deadly. My current guess is that they help get rid of Externals who go rogue, eliminating the threat, or something like that.
4. Alice is, again, seemingly the only one who consistently gets computer errors. Why? What is FR3-D1 trying to tell her with that?
5. COLIN, MY MAN!!! Amazing to hear your voice again, even though you really don’t want to be recorded. ❤️
You definitely sound like you’re still going _through it,_ though. I just hope he can find a way to confide in people without endangering himself or others. 😥
6. It’s interesting that Colin _also_ is talking about alchemy at the end! “Not that anyone cares as long as it all balances, right? Not too much mercury or the world ends, not too much sulfur or we all go mad…” So whatever he’s been looking into is also tied in with that… 🤔
7. I’m not an expert on alchemy or anything, but I wonder if The Fears in this world are somehow categorized/thought of more through alchemical principles or something like that. There’s been a lot of talk about things “balancing out” in a few statements, and that makes me think of alchemy a bit; equivalent exchange, and all that.
OKAY, now let’s talk about that statement, because I have _thoughts!_
1. This statement is from 1684, and they’re talking about “the protocol” all the way back then?! So then, if it is fully known as “the Magnus Protocol”, then it probably isn’t referring to Jonah Magnus, since he originally lived in the 1800’s, mostly. A person on Patreon commented that it’s possibly referring to Albertus Magnus, who was an alchemist, and the patron saint of alchemy, among other things.
2. Isaac Newton being involved in crazy supernatural shit was not on my Bingo card, but I am here for it!
3. The Diana’s Tree that Newton created is fascinating… and its effects are also terrifying! While not exactly the same effect on the dog, it very much brought to mind episode 3, where the guy turned into a tree. 😬
4. So “the protocol” definitely seems to indicate that it’s basically “destroy the bad supernatural thing in as permanent a way as possible”. Which is why Robert Hooke was basically saying, “just use the protocol on Isaac’s laboratory, to destroy his horrific research, but we don’t need to kill him. He could still be put on the right path,” and all that.
5. I definitely think now that The Protocol is why the Magnus Institute was burned down. We know they were doing supernatural research there, and maybe most of it was above board. But I’m guessing that they delved too deep into something and took it too far, possibly resulting in whatever escaped the basement when Alice and Sam went there. If they were trying to kill whatever that was, they failed, and I think that’s almost certainly very bad for everyone. 😥
6. I’m guessing Starkwall is currently the main group that executes The Protocol, considering what they did in episode 7 to the charity shop and the “volunteers” inside it. They go in, eliminate the threat, and burn the evidence, or something like that.
i wonder if there is a potential relation between the two Magnus-es

@@BeautifulEarthJa Yeah, I definitely suspect the cases are connected.
Considering that the garden from episode 3 was surrounding what looked like a _bombed out_ church, I’m guessing that similar research was going on in that building, and when it was destroyed (likely by The Protocol) remnants of the “tree” remained, and they were scattered around the building.
The garden then formed from that, and anyone caught in it, who got scratched and such by the plants, would begin the slow transformation process.
That’s my theory, anyway. 😅
Something I believe I’ve noticed is that whenever FR3-D1 gives a case that seems tailored to the convention it hears, the voice reading it seems to be Chester. Idk if this means anything, but it is a trend to keep in mind.

Breakdown time! First, we get a bit more insight into Celia's secret research: alchemy. She lied when she told Sam she was just being curious. Sam notes how it has something to do with transference and spiritual substitution of elements.
Next, the Case about Isaac Newton and his weird alchemy. But first I'd like to vent because god dammit now we have to keep track of Robert Smirke, Robert Hooke AND Robert Boyle! Why're all the Robs involved in spooky shit!? Now, the Arbor Philosophorum Perfecta (latin for the Philosopher's Tree) seems to be a reference to the Tree of Knowledge from the Bible. The latin Newton says to Hooke is related to it and the fruit eaten by the dog gave it knowledge and human-level self awareness. Hooke also mentions a protocol meant to protect people from supernatural stuff, most likely the titular Magnus Protocol. Given how we know from TMA that many historical figures (especially scholars and scientists) were studying the Fears, it seems like in this universe they created a protocol which could be enacted to remove anything they found relating to the Fears from the public eye.
As for the Post-Case parts, Sam seems to be spot on that Freddy can hear them and give them relevant info: he talked about alchemy and the Magnus Institute with Celia and immediately gets a Case on them. Gwen brings up Starkwell Protection Services, who used to be associated with the OIAR until 2000 (notably the Institute burned down in 1999) and are most likely the armed people who dealt with the incident in Episode 7. Lena says they have a habit of escalating things which is why she doesn't want Gwen hiring them, which would make sense since she wants to keep things as secret as possible. Lastly, poor Collin isn't doing well. He mentions a "him" that is watching them and "mummy and daddy Stasi".
Theory time! I'll get to the simpler stuff first: the Stasi are the German secret service so I think the "him" Collin mentions could be Gerry Kaey. Gerry's ancestor is Albrecht Von Closen who's from Germany (we've also already had a mention of the place in Germany where the Von Closen house was located in TMA) and had a connection to Jonah Magnus and thus The Eye (Collin's paranoid about being watched and the "him" knowing what they know).
Lastly, it seems like alchemy is going to play a huge role in the rules of this world. I'm thinking each Fear will be associated with an element, based on how the weird tree in the Case was linked to the Tree of Knowledge and its fruit gave a dog knowledge. It also looked at Hooke and KNEW him, all very Eye-related stuff. Plus Collin mentions too much mercury causing the end of the world and too much sulphur causing everyone to go mad, so Mercury=End (maybe Extinction) and Sulphur=Spiral. Since Hooke originally thinks the weird tree was very high quality silver, I'm going to tentatively say Platinum=Eye (Platinum looks like silver, is extremely rare and in alchemy was seen as a fusion of gold and silver).
Collin also mentions a balance, seemingly between the elements. This further supports the Element=Fear theory since Lena mentioned the OIAR's job is to keep the opposing forces of the world in balance. This all very similar language to Robert Smirke's ideas on balance and opposing forces, using architecture to control the Fears. We'll have to keep an EYE out for more alchemy/element themes in the future, but what scares me most is how I'm reminded of MAG 183 The Monument: a statement all about how foolish it was for people to try and turn the Fears into a science. Hell, one of them even had a theory that involved giving spiritual significance to minerals! So I'm not sure how long this balance of opposing forces is going to last...
(Quick and minor thing: Stasi WAS German (or specifically DDR) secret service. I don't think that distinction is important here, but I thought I'd add it anyway.)

Okay something I've been thinking about since Celia came around is that maybe she is using the OIAR in order to get closer to the Magnus Institute or anything Magnus related, since she knows some TMA specific things. Then I thought she might be using Sam since he has ties to the institute. Now I'm worried maybe I was right, because that would be heartbreaking especially for Sam
I’ve had “The Book of Secrets by Albertus Magnus” on my Goodreads for like a year … I think I’m fully convinced now that the original protocol goes back further than Jonah M. So perhaps one of the founding philosophers of alchemy is a in-universe founder of the institute!

Arsenic: poison, toxicity the snakes
Gold: the tempering to get to perfection: girl repainting her body, crypto bro going to trials to become better but failing then “corrections department” is the tree of life that kills him in the end
Mercury: death, Mr. Bonzo and lady hunter which is why Lena freaked out bringing something like that so close to everyone, tainting the equation
Sulphur: making everyone crazy, I.e dead lady coming to life and telling about the house and teleporting to our dimension
Lead: the thing before, the balance that could go either way, most likely the cursed dice cause they felt heavier

Okay, extra stuff. I've realized this seems connected to the guy from tmagp 3-Putting Down Roots. Samuel(tmagp 3) mentions his desire for the sun and the dog is said to grow towards the sun with insatiable desire. Also it seems Alice got another jmj.error, it seems she gets them the most. Is there a specific reason for this? Like Is FR3-D1 trying to get her to talk to her coworkers about everything? Does anyone have thoughts on this?
I think she's getting the errors because she is not acknowledging what is happening - Collin is hiding, Sam is suspicious of being watched, Gwen has her own deeper problems with the externals and Alice is just... ignoring it all. She is doing what she thinks is right, avoiding the 'spooky'. That's what sets her apart from the others, I think

I find the dog's sentience interesting not only because it happened but because of the way Robert talked about it. It's _eye_ looked at him, and it _knew_ him. The eye knows. Is there more at play, as the eye is of an animal, does the animal reresent that the Eye itself is a beast or of a certain beast, or is it just the Eye itself that sees, knows, watches? Is this one of the Eye's origins, It's origin in this universe? Enlightenment granted to a beast of lesser intelligence as an alchemical experient. Understanding what it was once only able to percieve as true, suddenly understanding what everything before it can mean, the mind expanding beyond it's limits, beyond it's own horizens, setting new thresholds to learn and to see and to know more than only true and false. Enlightenment, expanding, knowing. Is this what the Eye does to It's followers? It's victims?

This statement reminds me of a lot of entities. The crystal stuff reminds me of the Buried, the growing into a tree reminds me of the Corruption, and then there's the obvious Eye influence. Could Newton be using alchemy to combine different dread powers? Or are Smirke's 14 just completely out of the picture?

So clearly Colin has been touched by the Eye. For the life of me I can't remember any Entity specifically associated with plants. If I had to guess I'd have said Buried but this could honestly be one of those "Powers" Lena mentioned. Either way, I am HERE for it.
This assumes that the entities in TMP and the exact same as the entities in TMA. Keep in mind we are in a different universe, so maybe there are more entities!

Listening to Colin's rant, I was wondering about what those alchemy things are supposed to mean. So long story short, I went down a bit of a rabbit hole.
Mercury and sulfur (the two things that Colin mentioned in his rant) combine with salt to make the Tria Prima, which seem to be like the three main elements in alchemy. My best guess would be that those are the equivalent of TMA entities? That's just blind guesswork at this point, though.
Sulfur seems sort of like fire and dryness, it's very Desolation. It's also got something to do with conciousness or the soul? All three of these elements have some connection to the human body.
Mercury is like transportation and transformation, especially between life and death. It's got a bit of opposition with Sulfur in that it's more like cold and wetness, maybe Lonely? Its part in the body is the spirit (I'm not 100% sure how that's different from the soul tbh) - if I had to theorize, I'd say that the tattoo statements are this one.
Salt is a lot more stabilizing, it's like a fixed point or physical matter, basically the real world. It's tied to the physical body. I'm not sure how it's going to be turned into horror (if it is the last entity, that is), but I'm excited to see what they do.

I believe that in the MAGP universe there’s powers that existed way before the fears came (because of Jon). If this is true I wonder how the previous power would interact with the fears.(I only think this because the case with the woman and the tape recorders seems more related to the fears than previous cases)
alice really needs to give up on trying to just ignore this. shes right in that yeah the more you look into these things the more involved you get and the more in danger you are...but shes already in it all. if she was really dead set on not having to do with any of this she should at least quit. but as long as she works there theres no avoiding it. better to at least try and learn...something about whats going on then plugging your ears and hoping the monsters next to ya just keeps walking past

Could be abit late to the party on this one, but is the last time they used the protocol be the great fire of London? This is from 1684 and the fire was 1666. They talk about a pestilence and releasing the protocol on the city of London it's self. Plus it's believed the fire helped to get rid of the plague.

This statement is difficult to process. It is clear from Robert's letter that the Alchemy here is practiced often and does entirely different things from what it could in our world. In here, Alchemy is real. And as such, Isaac Newton has created the Tree of Knowledge or a functional alternative to it. Alchemy in our world is said to turn lead into gold or bestow eternal life. In popular culture you get things such as homunculi. So is this an homunculus of the Tree of Knowledge? Even if it is, I got a bigger question; how the F did Isaac make the Tree of Knowledge in the first place? It is a mythical thing, maybe one of a kind, a bible only object of legends!
To recreate something, it must exist first so... does the Tree of Knowledge actually exist? And so does Paradise, Adam and Eve and... God?
Because if He exists, he might be a Fear entity. Which makes sense really as you have of course, god-fearing people. But in universe, there might be the Fear of Authority. That would include God, Lena may be an avatar of it, and while Alice might have joked about it, the UK Government might be a part of that Fear entity too.
In terms of the old Fears, I would say Flesh/Spiral, maybe Corruption as far as the experiments go, with a dollop of Web for the loss of control Robert seems to feel towards Isaac. But I won't put too much stock of the Old fears in this statement, we abandoning the old Archives tracks and riding the Protocol's ones from this point on I think
Side note which I just thought of; Robert mentions his work on Micrographia in order to stop that awful plague, the Bubonic plague aka the black death happened in 1346. The letter is written in 1684. Has this guy drunk of the Elixer that bestows eternal life?! Furthermore he mentions using the protocol on the city of Londen, so that probably is the Great Fire of Londen which happens two decades earlier. Has this become in time the OIAR? Was the their Response unit?
I feel like a fear of authority could be its own thing, but it could also pretty neatly slide into the Eye as what is their to fear in an authority figure if not the way they watch and judge you and learn what you’re hiding from them.
