Awesome music thanks to EpidemicSound
I tend to post a lot of non-video stuff on Facebook.
I have questioned this difference many times. Thanks for clarifying.
Glad this helped!
Thanks! I bought one from a nursery in the spring that wasn’t labeled. It is definitely a black night after watching your video. And now it has a bloom stalk about 10 inches long! I can’t wait to see what comes out of it.
Great video! Love my black prince but I love my "black knight" so much more! I love the shape and the color of the knight!
Thanks Lisette, I like the knight too, I really like the shape of its leaves! So sculptural!
This video helped me a lot! My local nursery labeled my black knight as a black prince and I have been confused for a while haha. Thanks for the vid
Still an excellent video till today and a Simple, straightforward, and delightful.
Thank you for all your efforts and will visit your channel for more beautiful videos like these.
I really like this vlog. I really enjoy the information and the comparisons. I can see why there would be confusion on my part between the two. I very much enjoy the Black Knight, but I enjoy the explanation of what the Black Knight actually is. I guess I never knew that there was a plant this dark and colorful. I really enjoy the comparisons. Thank you so much.
Glad you like it! I'm hoping to be able to push out more comparison videos soon.
Great Video..I Love Echeveria..I love to make unique pots for them..Thanks for sharing..
Thank you, this will be very helpful in the future. There has been a lot of confusion between Knights and Princes on reddit recently. I especially like that you use precise botanical names, who's a hybrid of what and such.
Hi there. Nice to know that you are finding this useful. About names and IDs, yeah I can be a bit pedantic haha!
I was sold a black knight 6 months ago and started to wonder if it was really a black prince. your video showed me it was !! I now want a black knight. They look awesome and judging by the comments they are easier to grow. Mine has been indoors since I bought it in the UK hasn't had a summer yet and is constantly covered in white patches. I treat it but the patches come back , reading another UK comment, I think mine lacks the ventilation it needs.
really good video! Thanks, the drawing and the description really helped me...
Great to finally know the difference! Thanks
Note for myself, @ 2:05 is the difference:)
I have been here probably...5 times and then I get confused...so now, I have bookmarked this:)
I appreciate your vid!
Love this video. Very easy to understand. I like the sword vs, shield comparison.
Love your videos and you gave good explanation on the comparison. I have only some experience with succulents but what I have noticed is that the darker varieties of echeverias seem to need more ventilation/airflow to help with infestations etc. I have no idea why (wish I knew) but that is what I have noticed. My suggestion for the varieties you discussed here would be to ensure the pots are larger (or wider more to the point) or if in the ground on top of a small mound.
Great comment Leanne! Yeah I learned this too the hard way, I thought they'd be more suited to the harshest part of summer but apparently they need more protection compared to the lighter echeverias. The main reason I think is that they absorb far more heat compared to the lighter ones since white reflects light, while black absorbs light. So from now on I'm going to adjust my staging and place the darker plants at the back where they don't get as much sun as those in front.
That black knight is beautiful. Your garden in the background is awesome!
Thank you!
Thanks really informative now I have to go shopping and try and get both in time for spring.
This video came at the right time for me! I just got a Black Knight &.a Black Prince-found them both at Lowe’s today! Love the color!
Ohhh nice find if you got them both!
Thank you. This was a really interesting and helpful video. I now know that I have a Black Knight. It is quite hard to keep it happy (and not etiolated) here in the south of England, but I have kept it outside in the sunshine for as long as possible this year and it is flowering right now (lovely red flowers) :-)
Just watched this. Very informative and to the point! Thank you. I hope you make more videos like this. Subscribed!
Hi Carolyn, glad you like it! I've made a few other comparison videos. I will be working on more at some point in the future too! The holidays are creeping up but ironically I'm getting less free time. I guess that's the reality if you have kids 😂
Thank you for the very thorough comparison! I can't wait for my first succulent to arrive!
Huge help! I've been struggling to identify a cutting I have. Looks like nothing else I've come across. I do believe what I have is a very stretched out "black knight" I loved the color as soon as I saw it, that glowing green center and blackest of black tips, but poor guy is in bad shape. Send us luck for his recovery!
Hey, good luck with your plant!
Thank you the great description and visual.
Beautiful succulents! 👍 It's good information thank you🌿
You're welcome!
Great video. Love it. I find Black Prince very prone to rot and disease but they are so easy to propagate through leaves. My black knight has been with me for 2 years but I find it very slow in growing compared to the Black Prince.
Yeah it does grow slow. I notice that too with mine.
This is a great explanation!!
Glad you found it useful!
Great! I was wondering this a while ago. I’ve since worked it out, but this would have helped lots!
really like this type of video, short and sweet but full of info, tfs!! ;)
Glad you like it! I'll look into making more like this.
Thank you for this! :D I just got my first black knight today and I really wanna know the difference.
I REALLY REALLYYY WANT THAT AFFINIIIIIS OMG
Great video!!!!!! Thank you for this video.
You're welcome Olga!
Awesome Chuck! Explained perfectly.
Thank Ray!
I know our seasons are opposite of you. I live in California and would like a video of what to do with plants that are dormant or slow growing. Most of my plants are echeverias and aeoniums. I like the fact that we are opposite seasons, this way I know what to do when they aren’t dormant in the coming winter.
Haha yeah, it works out well!
I enjoyed this a lot. Thank you!!
Love the indepth details! Really want to get my hands on a black knight now! 😁
You're welcome man, glad you like it!
Now I can see the difference, thanks love both of them, but each different.
Great video. Helped sort out what I have!
thanks for the clear explanation - i have to now rename mine to black princes.
Love this type of video.. thanks Chuck
TheDubrose1 glad you like it! I think there are other comparisons I'd like to make. I just need to find the plants in the mess that is my garden haha!
I love having them explained like that!
Thanks Tammy, I'll look into making more like these!
Very informative and helpful.. My black prince is much greener maybe its the humidity in my country.. Thank you and more video like this...
You're welcome!
Thanks a lot for this video...it's being a great use for me n my black prince...which i love soo much..😊😊
They have such cool names!! I love my Knight 🖤
Love the comparison videos!
I only learned today that I have an Affinis (Black Knight) and not a black prince! I love this succulent
Thank you for this comparison video. I have both plants and I'm always confused which is which.
You truly love succulents! Thank you!
I like your video! 💕🌱💕🌱💕🌱💕🌱
This was so informative! Now I know which one is which in my collection 😂
Very helpful video, thank you.
Thanks Chuck ! Please do more video like this :) Imbricata vs Secunda please !
Yeah hopefully soon!
Thank you so much for this! I feel like there isn’t enough info like this about succulents
Great explanation!
Thank you! This video was awesome!
You're welcome!
I enjoyed it. Very informative.
I want the black night so bad! It's gorgeous 🥺
Really helpful video, thanks for sharing:)
Glad you found it useful!
Hello Chuck. I love your garden! Here in Argentina there arent many frills or curls. I cant find black knight either.
Thanks Julieta. I'm honestly surprised they're not as common there though!
wow as a newbie i see the difference .... great lesson to learn .. thank you.... i think i would want to have the black knight... its more of a eye catcher
Very informative thank you 🙏🏻
So useful! Thanks a lot!!
Hhhhh, I have a Black Prince instead of a Affinis Black Knight. I was so excited when I first saw this plant cause I thought I was getting a Black Knight. Well, the Black Prince is nice too. Thanks for the Vid, very helpful as usual.
very good thorough comparison. I would add: black knight I can grow; black prince I can't haha. In all seriousness tho, I find my 2 black knights to be the most frequently flowering of all my echeverias - not sure if anyone else has that.
Lastly, I again state for the record that the name 'Black Knight' should be officially reinstated because it is the coolest name ever!!
Iza Szydlowska haha! It's funny that I could grow them a lot easier back when I was new to succulents. But they can't take my harsher growing method now. I guess I will have to go easier on them.
Very nice explanation, and easy to identify one from the other. But let us know, how to deal with the millie's bug, to destroy our plants
Ty, I really appreciated this vid
Thanks for the info👍
Thank you for the video , yes I like this type of videos
Thanks Laura!
Hi there. Thanks for your videos. You said, that if anybody want you to do another video about difference between Echeveria's, we should let you know. What is the difference between Echeveria profilica and Echeveria derenbergii?
Hi Karina, thanks for asking. There's a few differences between the two. The first and most noticeable would be the size. The prolifica tends to be a lot smaller compared to the derenbergii. It also clumps very tightly. It produces lots of pups along the flower stalks too.
The derenbergii tends to be fatter, wider, and larger compared to the prolifica. Their flowers would also be very different. The prolifica has tiny yellow flowers, while the derenbergii would have very large orange/yellow flowers.
@@Cerriscapades Hi. Thank you for the answer, even though it's a while ago. Is it possible to post picture to you somewhere, for id's of Echeveria's? I have a few, that doesn't have a name and I have looked at hundreds of pages on the internet trying to get some kind of ID. Thanks again for all your amazing videos. I really enjoy them.
I like this type of video please do more😍😍😍
You got it! I'll look for more plants in my collection that would make for good comparison videos!
Now i know...thanks for sharing 😇🙏 Godbless
Дякую! Все зрозуміло, дуже сподобалося.
tks ...this is very helpful...
very good great info thankyou.
You're welcome Patricia!
Thank you!
Hello chuck, I have a question. For the black prince we must put them in full sun, or shade, or morning sun, or little bit sunlight?
Thank you
It depends on how much light it is used to at the moment, which is mainly based on how much farina (the waxy coating on the leaves) it has. Despite its dark colour, the Black Prince has farina. You'll see it when you accidentally rub the leaves (please don't haha!).
The idea is to let it grow new leaves with thicker farina than the existing ones. To do that, you'll have to gradually raise the light levels. Say give it an hour more sunlight every 2-3 weeks, depending on whether it is actively growing or not. If it is actively growing, the new leaves will emerge faster.
@@Cerriscapades thank you chuck, it's very helpfull for me🤩
Muchas gracias!
thanks can you also post a video abt the care of Black Prince and Bluebird Echevaria as there r hardly any good videos on the same including soil, sunlight, water and infestations
Hello Chuck, I suscribe to your channel always try ti keep up wirh your videos really amaizing garden you have congradulations. I have a black prince echeveria it's dark green and clear green then i took some leaves to produce babies but they are pink and orange color know i am confuse? Thanks to share your knowledge of your plants have a great one 🤗
Yeah they are green in the shade. As for babies, they can take on a different colour when really small and gain the darkness as they get more exposed to the sun.
Thank you
Hi kuya Chuck Cerillo, thank you! 😉
What is the name of the beautiful red-orange one in the back? I cannot stop staring at it!
The one with the bumps on it? It's an Echeveria 'Mauna Loa'.
Yeah the one right behind the affinis, is that the one?
@@123lilmanny oh in that case that's Echeveria 'Pappy's Rose', which started cresting.
Well the lighter one that is. The darker red one to the front right of the crested Pappy's Rose is Echeveria 'Fireball'
Omg thank you! It’s such a beautiful plant. 😍
Cool tip thanks
I have been wondering why my Black Prince was looking like it is . I have checked it several times for bugs and rot. And found nothing. But we are experiencing upper 90's°f. My Pink Frills is doing the same thing
John Sheffield yeah they try closing uo when it gets too hot. You probably have to be a bit concerned when it gets too bright orange in color, it's too stressed and getting dehydrated by then.
Cerriscapades they are not changing colors yet. I have them in sun but they have a lot of shade especially at 12 p.m. where I live it gets hot and muggy / humid .
John Sheffield sounds like you've got them in a good spot considering the heat!
Hello. Is it safe to use washed beach sand for potting succulents?
Hi Chuck, have you tried growing black prince from seeds before? I sowed five seeds that I ordered from France ten days ago on 17/07/2020. Haven't seen any signs of germination here. Hope it's not too hot here in Singapore for them. Could easily go to 90 Fahrenheit somedays
I haven't tried those from seeds yet. From experience though, seeds tend to take longer if it is too hot (or too cold). It is also possible that they are dormant right now. I do not have enough experience with germinating seeds to help you troubleshoot this. The method that worked for me was using very fresh seeds, so I'm not yet that experienced with germinating dormant seeds.
@@Cerriscapades i understands, no worries. I'll update you if the seeds managed to germinate
I have my first black knight and is it weird that it has 5 heads? I've never seen anything like it
Wow, might it be a crest? Or just lots of offsets?
What is that plant on the left side of screen that’s spilling over?
Is that an echeveria 'crimson tide' in that beautiful succulent bed. To the left of the bp on the sidewalk edge with it's ruffles.😍
Thank you! I had a black knight, but the store I bought it didnot say black knight. They called it black. I looked up many youtube to see which one looks like the one I had and there was none. So my black knight is dead. I do have leave progagatation that started pup.
My echeveria black prince has a green part and not much darkish what i will do about it but there where had a full sun everyday and sometime cause of rain season right now
Rosemarie Gipiga makes sense, not as much sunlight when it is always cloudy. Happens to mine too!
Cerriscapades but i put on outdoor and there had a sun light
Hi sir it's me again
I have a black knight it's been a month in me thou I see some wrinkles in the leaves lower part indication of lack of water and then I already give him a lot of water but still the it's that a normal thing to my affinis? Or just because of the acclimation?
Thanks for the answer
How did u get rid of the bugs?
What did you do to remove those nasty mealies?
I go directly for systemic pesticides. I don't like to waste time fiddling with contact-based solutions because I might miss some of the bugs that are hiding. I just make sure to remove flowers first so that the pollinators do not somehow be affected.
Cerriscapades Thank you Chuck.
are these hardy?
Thank you! This video is very informative! My black prince is also infested with mealybugs.
Ahahaah, sorry im late for about 3-4 episodes cause of school, but anyways, i had a black prince leaf propagation, but sadly it died 2 weeks after it looked very nice and healthy :(( but im trying to try again ahaahah
That's fine. School first! (then succulents after getting home from school haha!)
Do you use fertilizer on your succulents?
Chet Jeudy only on my young plants, and very rarely on my mature ones except the newly-beheaded ones. I don't fertilize because I like keeping them stressed and my growing medium is mostly organic anyway, so they get lots of nutrients from the soil already.
Take note that I can get away with my type of soil mix because of my climate.
Black Knight is a hybrid of affinis I thought?
Alex Curtis not a hybrid. It is affinis. It is not a cultivar. The name is superfluous.
I have tried and tried and tried, but have killed off so many black prince plants in the past. Can never keep them alive unlike all my other Echeveria. It's on of my favourites, but I just can't keep it alive.
While they look good under the sun, it looks like they can't take as much sunlight as the lighter coloured echeverias, mainly cause the black means they absorb the heat more. I've been moving mine to areas where it's less harsher now.
Cerriscapades Thanks for the tip@
fi thanks Sirnally the difference
glad you find it useful!
I kill these all the time!
I am annoying you again, I love watching your videos I need to watch them over and over to get the pronunciation of the succulents right. I say a web page where they were breaking the words down so people like me don't get laughed at . I have been unable to do this collecting with succulents up until 7 months ago a vertebra fixed up and I was off but got laughed at the way I said the names . Why don't you get the names of yours and get someone to do them into synonyms....
Will pay one day on your site.
Don't stress on the pronunciation haha, I don't think I'm accurate with mine either due to my accent.
