- If you’re after a cordless chainsaw that’s lightweight, simple to operate and packed full of useful features, the new STIHL MSA 60 C-B or MSA 70 C-B fit the bill. Part of the STIHL AK System, these 2 new models are upgraded versions of the popular STIHL MSA 120 C-B and MSA 140 C-B battery-powered chainsaws and include a few handy improvements that make preparing firewood and pruning tasks around the garden even easier.
As well as the new design, a new Ergo lever on the back handle has been added for even greater comfort. The trigger system has also improved, meaning you have maximum control over the speed of the chainsaw chain. For example, if you’re cutting around delicate shrubs or working on an intricate wood working project, you’ll always be in full control. Finally, the chain oil level can be seen more clearly, making it obvious when it’s time for a top up.
Both cordless chainsaws come with a 12” chainsaw guide bar and our thinnest 1.1mm Picco Micro 3 chain. As well as being energy efficient and low vibration, this chain also produces a super smooth finish on the wood, making it ideal for wood working projects. It’s important to keep the chainsaw chain in good condition. For effective sharpening we recommend the STIHL 2-in-1 EasyFile as it’s easy to use. The chainsaw file sharpens the cutting tooth and files down the depth gauge at the same time, so it produces a great cutting result every time.

Tensioning the chain can be done without any tools using the Quick Chain Tensioning system. Simply lift the lever, loosen the sprocket cover and turn the thumb wheel to loosen or tighten the chainsaw chain. As well as being lightweight, the central positioning of the battery means the STIHL MSA 60 and 70 are well balanced and compact too. The rear handle has a rubberised coating for grip, and the QuickStop chain brake is within easy reach of the front handle.
🔶 STIHL MSA 60 vs STIHL MSA 70
So, what’s the difference between the STIHL MSA 60 and MSA 70? The design of both battery-powered chainsaws are similar but the MSA 70 is the more powerful model. The MSA 60 is recommended with the STIHL AK 20 whereas the MSA 70 is recommended with the AK 30 and has 25% more cutting performance than the MSA 60 C-B, allowing you to get the job done even quicker. You need to use the AK 30 battery to get full power from the MSA 70 chainsaw.
All STIHL AK batteries have a charge level indicator, and the battery transport position means you can move the saw around the garden without the risk of the battery falling out, or the machine being live. Thanks to the versatility of the AK System, the battery can be popped out of the chainsaw and used in a wide range of other battery-powered tools such as cordless grass trimmers, mowers, blowers and many more.
Maintaining a cordless chainsaw is significantly easier than a petrol machine. For the best performance from your machine, always keep the chainsaw chain sharp, keep the chain oil topped up using an oil such as our Forest Plus chain oil and keep the underside of the sprocket cover free from sawdust build-up.
Always read the manual before using any chainsaw and make sure you use the correct Personal Protective Equipment. With a cordless chainsaw, you should be wearing cut-protective trousers or chaps, chainsaw boots or wellies, eye protection and gloves. If you’re cutting branches that extend above head height, we’d recommend wearing a helmet too.

Is there any difference in the MSA 60 vs the MSA 70 other than the battery? If I put the AK30 battery in the MSA60 would it perform the same as the MSA 70 with the AK30?
Hi, thanks for the question. The MSA 70 has a higher maximum power output than the MSA 60 and requires the AK 30. Using the MSA 60 with the AK 30 would not result in the same power output as the MSA 70, but it would provide longer working times compared to the AK 20. Thanks, STIHL GB

Hi, thanks for your comment. You can use it in there, but it would give a reduced tool performance compared to the AK 20 (and also wouldn't last as long) so we always recommend either the AK 20 or AK 30 in the MSA 60. Thanks, STIHL GB
What's the difference between the msa140 and msa70? Is there any power difference or is it just cosmetics and design?

Thanks for your comment. No, there is no difference in the power, it's just a design overhaul. The new MSA 70 is ever so slightly heavier (2.9kg without the battery compared to 2.7kg) but all the features remain the same. Thanks, STIHL GB

How much does the msa 60 weight?

If you want to loose your left finger
There is a big opening in the bottom , we’re if you put your left finger you might loose it , I injured my finger badly and it took me a while to find out the issue.
