I'm Italian and I live in the south Marche region, believe me, it's very peculiar! I can get to the sea in just 20 minutes or to mountains in 30 and high ones!
We can skiing watching the sea or just enjoy a unique landscape, on clear days watching from Croatian mountains over the Adriatic sea to Gran Sasso mountain, almost 3000m high.

I visited Italy in 2018. I went to Rome and Florence and took a train between both cities. I knew Italy was mountainous so I found the plains so beautiful.

Hello Paul, I love it that you did a video on my country (not to mention the two excellent videos about its languages).
I will have to point out that you swapped the land measurements of Sardinia and Sicily. Sicily is the largest island of the two.
Another point that needs clarifying is Italy's number of governments.
Don't get me wrong, Italian politics is absolutely bonkers and frustrating, but that number depends from the fact that Italy doesn't do cabinet reshuffles. A minister may go, but if more need to go, a crisis is opened. The following government may be a copycat of the previous one with only a few names changed. Other countries would simply do a reshuffle.
I love my country, I think it's immensely beautiful and that beauty is very diverse: if you visit Tuscany you will see a landscape that is entirely different from that of Piedmont or Sardinia.
Unfortunately so many Italians take it all for granted and they don't safeguard that immense beauty. It makes me so mad, I sometimes wish I could live in a less beautiful place but with more reasonable people around.

as a spaniard from south america italy and japan are my favourite countries in the world, italy has more unesco sights than any other in the world. italy and japan have the same culture structure like strong family ties , great food , and landscape is amazing. their arts is mind blowing . i love their language , love their music and movies.

I have seen Italy five times by now, which is easy for a German like me. I have to say I love this country. What struck me the most was the Almalfi Coast, not far from Naples. You can see villages nestled in the mountains right by the sea, surrounded by terraces of orange trees. It's a little paradise. Almost a nice as this was Finale Ligure and Genoa.
But better than all of that are only the people. Italians are simply lovable. If you've never been to Europe, go to Italy. You won't be disappointed.
Well, err, my dear German fella (and European brother), in Genoa (and Liguria in general) people are not famous for their hospitality nor for their pleasantness....
Qualities like politness, hospitality and education that I always found in your country .... All the time ... That's why I love Germany ... As my grandpop always told me: Germans are earnest people, unlike Italians...😊
@@Ekphrasys That's funny. How similar the experiences are, when you do not live in the country you are talking about. I made those experiences, I described in the entry post and to be fair it might have been luck to meet particularly nice people.
Btw. Germans are not known for their kindness nor for their hospitality. That only applies to some rural regions. And also only to some people and certainly not Germans in general. Also I would not say Germans are better educated than people from any other Western civilization. You can get this impression if you only move in certain circles, e.g. students. But you then won't see all the dickheads we have here in Germany. And we have a lot of them. Only go to a football match and you'll see the true idiotic nature of a German.

Great video, as always. I lived in Italy as a teenager from 1998 to 2001 and have visited twice since, in 2003 and 2013. What struck me the most about the geography on my last visit was how much lusher it was than Spain. I go to Spain much more often than Italy, and the two countries are often compared, but in reality they look very unalike. Much of Spain is at least semiarid, but most of Italy is fairly lush by comparison. I can't speak for the Mediterranean coast of Spain; maybe it would look more similar to the coastal areas of Italy, but the interior of Spain is much drier.
Yeah, that's the impression I have of Spain's landscape.
It is so sad to hear a few words about Abruzzo. The region is famous not only for its natural treasure: the Abruzzo National Park, The Gran Sasso mountains, but also for its rich ancient history. Every person who has tried arrosticini and bocconotti will remember the tasty experience for their whole life.
I’m sure it’s amazing, but this is only a 10 minute video about the whole country, so I can’t go into depth on individual regions.
And Abruzzo is considered center Italy, not southern.
Green mountains, calm blue sea, amazing people, food and wine. That is my favorite region as well :)
I was privileged to live in Italy from 1982 to 1985, and I was also able to visit again twice during 1991. My parents and siblings have visited much more recently, so they could probably speak more about what it's like now, but I remember the beaches, the architecture, the amazing mountains, and especially the culture. I loved seeing the various parades and processions, celebrating the festivals, being able to visit castles and ruins and cathedrals, etc. I can't say enough about the food, and I absolutely love the language--well, Toscano, as it was the only variant I learned. Since I was a young child at the time, I don't recall anything really about the constantly changing government, but I do still have friends there who complain about it plenty--it seems to me that if you're speaking with Italians, eventually they'll start complaining about the government (though that may be a universal characteristic).

And most people who visit Italy seem to love it. The only person I know who didn't love it was my brother, but I think that's because he fell for some tourist scam. I don't remember what it was, but that was more than 20 years ago. Anyway, that exists anywhere there are tourists.

I have never been in Italy but is one of my main destinies to visit in the future, I have ancestors in Friuli. Thanks, Juan! I think this channel can be as big as Langfocus or even bigger, but it will take time to build it up. Right now I enjoy this channel a lot more, because Langfocus is far too consuming and exhausting.

I'm getting thing together to visit Italy, doing school-related things this summer, studying in a village and then short trips to a few of the larger cities. It'll be my first time out of the country! I need to brush up on my italiano!

I'm treating this channel as something separate from Langfocus and don't want to focus on language more than any other aspect of a country. But I've done something similar to what you're talking about on Langfocus, with videos like Languages of Belgium, Languages of Singapore, Languages of South Africa, Languages of Switzerland, and Languages of Italy. But that's about as close as I can get.

Once I spent summer in Sicily (June 15 to Sept 3) and the first and only rain was on the Sept 1.
The areas of Sardinia and Sicily are swapped. Sicily is larger than Sardinia (and much more populated as well).

The oldest tree in Europe
In Italy there is the oldest and largest tree in Europe. We are in Sant'Alfio, in Sicily, in the province of Catania and according to experts there is a tree here, the Chestnut of the Hundred Horses, which is between 3000 and 4000 years old. Its name is linked to a legend that tells of how over 100 horsemen took shelter under its branches during a storm.
The shortest river in the world
Also in Italy there is a small little river. It is called "Ri" is only 175 meters long and was born in Malcesine, a town in the province of Verona, from a small lake. The path of the Ri river is very short, it crosses the hamlet of Cassone and then flows into the waters of Lake Garda.
The Unesco Heritage sites
That in Italy there are many natural and artistic beauties is practically a fact. Just look around the main cities to see a monument, a church or a historic place of rare beauty at every corner. First car with internal combustion engine
The invention of the internal combustion engine is attributed to two Tuscans, Eugenio Barsanti and Felice Matteucci, who patented it in 1853

Nutella was born in Italy
When we crave sweet, the first thing we think about, if we are chocolate lovers, is Nutella. This delicious product has all Italian origins: it was invented in Cuneo in 1964 by Ferrero starting from previous experiments on a cream called Supercrema. Recipe? A secret of course.
The oldest universities
In conclusion, Italy also amazes us for its universities. In fact, our country has the oldest university and film festival in history. These are the University of Bologna, founded in 1088, and the Venice Film Festival, inaugurated in 1932.

Didn't know that about the Marche beaches, in fact I know very little about the region, except for what cities and provinces it has. Need to put in on my to see list, since I've kind of subscribed to visiting Italy (twice this year, four times so far)
I was most impressed so far by the landscape in Liguria, and Genova in particular. That's one hilly city.

I went to Italy in 2012. The first time in my life at age 18 ironically, being a Western European citizen. Usually France, Portugal and Spain were on the top of my list so far. Either way, Venice is more beautiful than what it looks like in images.
I also remember the interesting contrast, as you were leaving the Alps and driving through the Italian countryside in the Po Valley, which is as flat as the Netherlands basically. Then, going over the Appanine Mountains too, as we were heading towards Tuscany, including the village where known Tenor singer, Andrea Bocelli was born. Lots of geographical diversity.
I'm from Finland and have been to Italy many times. I've been to Naples, Sorrento, Sicilia, Sardinia, Lake como, Milan, and Pesaro. So I would say I know a fair amount of what it's like in different places in Italy. My favourite has to be Lake Como, it's just so damn beautiful in there. Also the Amalfi coast is great.

The whole World is beautiful to see and visit. Europe is one of the most visited continents for many known reasons. Among European countries there are two categories :
1- Overpriced, overvalued, overly crowded countries like Italy and France.
2- Unknown gems 💎 : like Hungary, Czech republic, Portugal...

That wasn't a criticism of any specific politicians, and I don't really know much about them. It just seems like the system itself could be improved if the government changes so often. They obviously have proportional representation and have to piece together coalitions. There are good aspects of a system like that, ie. people can vote for a more specific party that better represents their interests. But the coalitions tend to be precarious.

The political system was designed in the aftermath of WWII and the fall of fascism, with the constitution specifically set to guarantee representation of all political voices, explicitly forbidding a fascist party, and finally ensuring that no single political force or governmental agency has the opportunity to exercise power in unchecked ways. Any responsibility is usually shared by more than one actor, with each one overlooking the operations of the other and often with the ability to vetoes its actions or reverse its decisions. It is a system designed to make it impossible -- or at least very difficult -- to install a dictatorship by grabbing power softly / legally.
The downside is that, essentially, things proceed exceedingly slowly and little gets actually done.

Yes, you’re right that I got their sizes mixed up (maybe because their sizes are fairly close).
In all fairness, the short average duration of Italian governments can also be seen as an advantage: no matter how terrible each government is (and believe me, most are, indeed!!!), as soon as it crumbles, people are free to hope/dream (at least, for a few weeks) that the next government will be better. Until reality proves them wrong...😕

The capital city of Calabria is not Reggio Calabria but Catanzaro.
Calabria is particular. A region can have only one capital city in which the president, the regional "parliament" and the regional government are located but Calabria has the president and the regional government in Catanzaro and the "parliament" in Reggio Calabria.
De jure the capital city is Catanzaro, de facto both Catanzaro and Reggio are capitals.
