You made some very valid and excellent points Chris regarding Brazilian jiu-jitsu for sharpening defense with the gi and sharpening offense without the gi. I will go on to also say that I think it is also beneficial for people to train in the gi while rolling and ground striking as well training for more of a street fighting MMA perspective and not just life and culture inside of a cage. I think that would also be very helpful for individual martial artists who are into the self-defense aspect
