  • Now Ostia Lido is the marine district of Rome. Its history as a seaside resort began in the 30s when middle-class beach clubs and villas in the new European avant-garde style were built on the coast. The modernist architecture continued to develop in the post-war period when Ostia experienced a tourist boom. However, pollution of the sea, that became apparent in the 70s, reduced the popularity of Ostia as a resort, and many buildings fell into ruin.
