A tank like that would probably for a 20 gallon cost about $1500 I also have some other antique tanks even older about 1 gallon made out of pewter and brass and that is from the 1800s Victorian.
@@anoxicfiltrationplenums I hope sometime you will show us those tanks. Most people have never seen any of the old classical type tanks. I have only seen a few pictures and photos myself but I really like yours. I would just have to pay to find one. I hope someone will reproduce them. Have a great evening!
I'm basically an aquarium noob when it comes to all this complicated stuff, but I've never given up on an undergravel system. My only problem is I've always wanted sand which everyone says isn't possible without reversing etc. So yesterday I was determined to figure out a way. I took two undergravel filter panels stacked, with the bottom wrapped in pantyhose and the corner of the top panel cut out to allow the passage of the tube, so the top basically just acts as a barrier from the nylon and to lock in a layer of sand over it. So far, so good. Crystal clear already with just one side running. 😊
Thank you, Dr. Novak for inventing/ developing the anoxic filtration system! It has made our aquariums so much more enjoyable! The water is crystal clear and the fish seem so much more happy. Best of all, there is so much less algae. We have two tanks at home and one in my medical office; all three have a plenum. I would like to eventually get a huge fresh water tank with beautiful colorful fish for my chronic pain patients to enjoy. Your contributions to this hobby are extremely significant. Thank you!
I need to find a latterite substitute as I can't find it anywhere here in Northern BC Canada. ☹ Would finding and using iron rich rocks as in tank decorations help?
Will there be a "Why does it not work? Anoxic Filtration and Plenums" video to talk about lessons learned from failed setups? or at least factors that would prevent it from working?
Hello Dr. Novak, I am learning so much! I really appreciate what you are doing. I made a Biocenosis basket about a week ago with Laterite and non-clumping, unscented Special Kitty cat litter from Walmart Canada. the ingredients say: Sodium Bentonite, Minerals, PTFE. ...is this the right stuff? By the way I have ordered and received the Sodium Thiosulfate from Pentair that you recommended. For any of your Canadian viewers, I was able to order it from the States and it came to just under $38 Canadian including shipping . Some of the topics I am hoping you will cover at some point are 1. Carbon...what does it do? How does it work? 2. Aquarium Top off systems....what to look for...value for money 3. I'm going to lump all of #3 together...TDS...pH...GH...KH...the water from my home water softener...What are they? Are they important? How does it all work? Once again I am so excited about finely getting answers to questions I've had for years ie Completing the nitrate cycle...Redox, Phosphate/algae...basics behind dechlorinators....making your own Dick Boyds treatment bags. Thank You!
Hi gordon, im Fernando, i'm from Ontario and about to make BDC baskets for my koi, i bought the same kitty litter and noticed the same PTFE on the bag ! ...have you received a response from Dr. Novak if its ok? i just asked him the same question if ok on his latest video and waiting response....
Hi Dr. Novak, thank you very much for sharing your discoveries and knowledge with us. I am at the final stages of building a pond with a drum filter and anoxic filtration only. Whould I need to cycle the pond empty for a while before adding fish? Should I hold off on using the UV clarifier when starting up this new pond to let the bacteria establish and populate the baskets? Thank you very much in advance!
Interesting stuff . Glad I found your channel . I'm definitely learning a lot . I think I'll try doing this setup . I know what you mean about internet bullies and their nonsense especially the ones who have an agenda of their own ,greed etc . People like that aren't worth my time or energy . If they want to remain ignorant that's on them . Looking forward to seeing more of your channel .✌️
I haven't bought any in a while but it used to be you could buy 50# paper bags of oil dry from the auto parts store and I'm pretty sure that's just the same baked clay as that kitty litter was/is.
@@anoxicfiltrationplenums I'm sorry, I should hold off commenting until I get caught up on all the video's in order. I see now that you have covered all this. I'm 1/2 blind so it's taking me a while. Plus I keep going out of order. I'm watching the Dec 20 2020 video now which covers this and I see the answer to a question I posed a few days ago regarding bags. Thanks for the replies.
@@anoxicfiltrationplenums Maybe just one more question. The difference in the kitty litter, is it because it's not baked? The label now reads 100% natural ground clay but does not mention baked.
@@POSminiracer yes because it is not baked. Walmart used to carry the baked kitty litter that had very low dust. So I talk to the company that supplies Walmart and they say that Walmart now gets the kitty litter that is not baked any longer. From my understanding the company that does kitty litter also does the oil dry and other products like that and it just depends on what the customer wants and how expensive they wish to buy their product.
Hello, can you please talk about iron and the role it plays in BCB and plenum? Ferrous Gluconate breaks down quickly. How many PPM of iron do you think is sufficient for good bacterial growth?
Hi Dr. Novak , I have heard some people have had a problem finding baked clay and I was one of them however I recently found a product from Hobby called (Aqualit ) not as cheap as kitty litter but made for the aquarium hobby. I am in Denmark and I found the product in a German shop. It may be available on Amazon because it’s from hobby. Just some information you may want to pass on. Thank you for taking the time to educate us.
dont worry doc ... no matter how bad the road gets but in the end truth and always prevails ... false hood doesnt have the ground under ..... its alaysbase less ....

Dr. Novack, I am returning to the hobby after 40 years and I am enjoying your videos and am grateful for the updated education. A sincere thank you.
I know it's not the subject of your video, but that antique tank is beautiful. It's a real work of art!
Mark von Wisco it certainly is! If only we could find us one! (But I am on the lookout)

If it is a non-clumping type, then why not.

The Hanna phosphate checker using the LR regent will be a good start.

A lot more info is needed to make an astute judgment call on that one.
I have like 5 of them all fine
🤔✌🏾
Fix something you just brought? Shouldn't have to even for cheap products.
Dr Novak can I have your email?
