I think about 2 minutes into this video when he said all of the locations were board instead of just card paper is when I was sold. Every feature after that just felt like Christmas morning!
Great video, Rodney. You've made me reconsider my gung-ho first instinct to include all three modules in my first play. I think I'll just go with the bandits an the improvements for now!
OKay, Rodney. I just bought this game, and while I am waiting for it to be delivered I watched this to get a quick summation of the new elements. Thanks to you, I am ready to play tonight! Also, I want to ad to John Lui's comments below. As I watched, I realized that I was smiling along with you. Your demeanor is what makes your videos so watchable and enjoyable! Not sure what I would do without your vids!
I was indecisive about actually buying this expansion but this video made me realize that there's some really neat stuff in it. Just pre-ordered it from their website.
just ordered my copy. can't wait! That player vote on the first player token not moving is big. With the way the game is set up, the person who goes last in the current round goes first in the next. This gives the Betrayer the opportunity to set-up an unimpeded two-turn sabotage. Now there's the risk that players will catch on to what is about to happen. With the new vote system they can effectively stall-out the betrayer's pay-off turn for the chance to counter. As a result the betrayer can now no longer act with impunity on these back-to-back turns.
This is a amazing video ! The content on this channel is cool and plus I LOVE YOUR VOICE !!! It's make game explaining way more fun and entertaining 😍😀
Amazing video as always Rodney! GREAT scythe video btw that was extremely informative, u are definitely the best in the biz and I look forward to your next video!
This is the best explanation of what is going on at Raxxon but I'm still not sold on that module - which probably means it'll be my favourite one when my copy finally arrives :)
I see there is going to be a new expansion, Warring Colonies. I'm excited by the possibilities! Might be thrilling to get a match with Rodney and Andrea (schedule permitting) vs Pep and Luke!
Dead of Winter is the only zombie game that my friends enjoy playing (in spite of how much I love Last Night On Earth and all of it's expansions). When I found out about this sequel I immediately pre-ordered it. The original is one of the best games in my huge collection. I can't wait for this new one to arrive, and thanks to this video I'll be able to jump right in more or less without having to read the rule book to see how the new modules play and merely keep it on hand for detail references.
So we finally played a game the other night and it was tough (but two of us won) and fun! One question a friend of mine had was if the racxxon location counted as one of the locations needed to help complete the colony objective for "Tribute". We pretty much needed two cards from every location under the objective before the game ended. Thanks again for the awesome video and help!
Will you ever make a How to Play for Dead of Winter: Warring Colonies, I love how clear you explain the rules these videos definitely help a lot and I feel I learned way more from you than I ever have reading the rule books
@@WatchItPlayed Understandable, do you usually cover games long after they are released? Either way thanks for the reply and keep up the great content!
Thank you very much for this break down, it was very intuitive, would like to ask if you will do a game break down of dead of winter warring colonies? Keep up the great content, have a good day
Man, Dead of Winter, Dead of Winter: Long Night, and the prequel board game Raxxon all has been shown how to play, but Waring Colonies is one I'm still waiting on. The only one that's left. Still hope it gets a how to play video.
@@WatchItPlayed it's not in print anymore? I'm glad I got a copy before it was out of print. I didn't know about that. It seemed too soon to be out of print. Apparently it can be bought anywhere from 57 dollars to 38 dollars if it's googled though. Different sights have it
I just bought the main game in spanish(Dead of Winter: Un juego de encrucijadas) few weeks ago... i can't wait until this game is released in the spanhis version to play it!
Thanks Rodney! Looking forward to picking up this expansion, since I own and enjoy the base game. I'm a little intimidated with the bandits module, but Raxxon and improvement modules do look intriguing.
I get the sense here that, unlike with the Lords of Waterdeep expansion where you have the option to combine both Overmountain and Skullport with the base game, Dead of Winter: The Long Night would best be played with just one module at a time. True? I greatly admire Plaid Hat for allowing this expansion to also be able to serve as its own standalone game. It'd be interesting if other devs followed suit.
The modules are meant to be played in any combination you prefer - including all of them :) Saying what particular game groups will find best, would be difficult, as I do see that as based on personal preferences.
Love DoW. Guess I need to buy it now due to the fact that the places are now boards instead of sheets. I'm excited about this. Need to exhaust our playthrough of original DoW. #RIPWallet
I just ordered this game and i've watched this video of yours 5-6 times already but still there are things that i have yet to understand...( i watched the DoW crossroad multiple times too) i have 2 question: 1. Raxxon and Bandit Hideout: How to move your character there??? Since there are no 7 or 8 on a dice 2. Special zombie in Raxxon: This is what I think you mean in the video: In the Colony phase, : __If there are Dice that match the "Containment code" : + Thumb up option win : we'll remove the top card of Raxxon's Experiment cards... + Thumb down option win: we'll remove 3 zombies at the colony but we have to unleash the special zombie at a random location (roll the dice) __ If there are no Dice that match the "Containment code" : we unleash the speacial zombie at random location (roll the dice) Please answer No.1 and check if No.2 is correct or not...thank you so much... +Watch It Played
Let's see if I can help. 1. In Dead of Winter, players don't roll dice to decide where they want go. You just pick up your figure and move it to the location you wish to travel to. 2. You've got it.
Hi, Great video! I had a few questions regarding Dead of Winter (TLN) that I was hoping you could please help with: 1) There are two survivors in the deck who’s special abilities only positively help the Raxxon & Improvement modules (Chimp and another I have forgotten the name of). When playing a normal game excluding the modules, do you exclude these survivors when handing out the initial 4 survivors to the players? This would therefore mean that there are only 18 survivors instead of 20. And also on a 5 player game, would mean, two players only have a pool of 3 survivors to pick their main 2 from 2) If, for any reason, all survivors are now in the game and you draw an outsider card. This card is now essentially useless and has no value, correct? Is there anything else than can be done with ‘useless’ cards? Thanks very much in advance!
1) I don't believe they included specific instructions about that, so I'm not sure what the answer there would be. I did find this thread bout that, but it doesn't have any real answers either: boardgamegeek.com/thread/1698552/not-enough-survivors 2) I would be surprised if you ran out of survivors before the game ended. Has this happened to you, or are you just speculating?
Watch It Played thanks for your quick replies. I’ll check out the thread. It hasn’t happened yet, only speculating. The “Tribute” mission in a 2 player game means the two players start with 4 survivors each, which is why I thought this may be possible.
Love the game! And thank you for the video. A point in need of clarification. "Although an exploding trap at that location will still remove [Special Zombie] (9:49)." This contradicts the rulebook: "Other game effects such as items and character abilities that do not involve an attack, or explosive traps that would normally kill a zombie does not affect special zombies. (Pg.18)" So does triggering an explosive trap on a location with a pre-existing special zombie kill the special zombie or not? Thank you.
Does the new game come with an abundance of baggies, or an actual game insert, I was a little dissapointed by the included 'insert' and ended up making my own as shown on my channel
This may seem crazy, but I forget :) I have a big collection of baggies, so I tend to use my own anyway - so I don't remember if that's what I did here, or if I used ones that came with it. The insert is similar to the original game.
I normally never bother to give videos a thumbs up but I definately did like your two videos about dead of winter thank you so much :) Was fun to learn from you
When searching, do event cards happen immediately or does the active player keep them in their hand until they choose to play it. (Specifically the helpless survivor and new survivor cards.)
No plans to do a video specifically for that, but here's what the rule book says: "All cards and components from the Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game base set may be used with The Long Night as desired. Whenever search decks are combined from more than one Dead of Winter product, shuffle each location deck and deal out 20 cards facedown to form a search deck for that location. Remove the undealt cards from the game. Important note: Combining cards in this way may make the game more or less difficult. Players may choose to pick cards to add or remove to create a personal experience."
+Watch It Played yeah. thanks for this tutorial btw. :) may i just ask if it is possible to play 2 or 3 modules at the same time? and is it recommended to merge the original and the expansion?
Thank you for this video. In one of their preview posts, Plaid Hat showed a character whose ability triggered on a 6+. I'm dying to know if the game has d8 or higher-sided dice, or if we can use multiple dice per action. How else would the "plus" be possible?
Here is my only question regarding the game, from just doing a first play through with some friends tonight. Rosa Rodriguez's special ability states "Non-colony: Once per round, during your turn, you may kill 1 zombie or 1 bandit at Rosa's location. Do not roll for exposure". We played that this meant you had to spend an Unused Action Dice to "Attack" and that this special ability meant that you just didn't roll for exposure. However, when looking at other characters abilities that specifically stated whether they required an Action Dice or not, I'm no longer sure we were playing this right. This same question would apply to the text on the special ability for the sniper Kevin Jackson. So, do you need to spend a Action Dice when using Rosa Rodriguez or Kevin Jackson's special abilities?
this game looks AWESOME !! my group needs to exhaust the base game first before proceeding to snag this one. if im not mistaken - this is to release to stores within a few weeks now correct?
Hi Rodney. Fantastic videos (Dead of Winter, Ashes...) This is my first contact with this series, I've bought Long Night and already played only two times. I understood all rules but still have problem with basics - special ability of some survivors or equipments - I mean if die shall be used, with some minimum value or just 1+. Could you help please? I cannot find detaild explanation for it :( Ashes cards are explained one by one and everything in in the Web. For this game I have a huge problem. I play in Polish language version so it is not simple to find all because I do not know every origin name of the card but charakters' names are the same fortunately. Examples: #Kevin Jackson - do I need to use a die (attack action) to use his skill once per round ? #Emma Han - do I need to use a die (search action) to use her skill once per round ? I am playing Raxxon episode when she additionally has new ability / equipment to see and get one card more when searching in Raxxon. Can these abilities be combined or have to be done separately ? #book card "help yourself": (3+) once per round you can check 4 cards and take one. This is like search action but have to use dice 3+ to use this no matter which search skill value survivor has? #... enough :)
Kevin Jackson: No die is required. If you needed to spend a die for this effect they's show something like (4+) in the effect, meaning you'd need to spend a die of 4 or more. For Kevin's ability, it's an instant zombie kill, once per round. Emma Han: No die is required (for the same reason as Kevin's). Book: Yes, you have that right. Keep in mind, in a Search action you can spend noise tokens to draw more cards, in this case, you can't, because although it is like a Search action, it isn't a search action. Hope that helps!
Any chance you might play this with your son and/or daughter down the line? Like a sequel to that awesome Dead of Winters gameplay you did of the base game? I know I'm going to be jumping on this as soon as I can, I love Dead of Winter since I've gotten into it. Still haven't won a game though. :'(
It can be challenging to win :) We don't tend to play expansions to games we've already covered, so no plans to currently, but we may do a live play of it in the future.
Hey Aaron, I avoid reviewing or recommending in my tutorial videos. I don't feel confident that I would know what someone else would prefer more. I do have videos for both, in case you want to see which one you think might appeal to you the most.
@@WatchItPlayed Thanks for the reply, i already pulled the trigger. Got the first one after reading reviews on amazon. My friends and I played the heck out of gloomhaven. Love tough decision making games. Thanks for the content!!
Just got this game last night and cant wait to play it! I have one question, is it ok to play the game with all the modules active? Or is it recommended to play one modules at a time? Thanks for the awesome video!
You can certainly play with all of them active, but I know for my group, I prefer to introduce them one at a time, so that I can be sure none of the players are going to feel overwhelmed. Even though I may be ready to tackle all the new options, sometimes the other players may not be :)
Hello! Nice video!! I'm from Brazil and i've just received my copy of the game, and i have 2 questions, if you can help me to figure it out... 1- Do the Raxxon zombies come out EVERY ROUND, unless someone goes to Raxxon and spend dices to avoid it? Or just when someone goes there to explore? Do they come out even if NO ONE has gone to Raxxon?? 2- About Bandits hideout... zombies are killed by a different method there, right, like it says on the table "explore" and "attack", we must roll a die, it's ok. But what if I have a grenade launcher equipped on a survivor who is in the Library, for example, can I kill 2 zombies there are at the bandits hideout normally, by not looking at the table "attack" mode? Because it says this weapon can kill zombies on any location, I want to know if it includes the bandits hideout location too... Thank you so much for your help!! Again, great video, it helped me a lot : ) Merry Christmas!!!
@Rodney Hey there. Wanted to ask you if you are planning to make watch it played on This War Of Mine: The Board Game ( recently funded game on kickstarter) It is planned to be released in February :) I pledget for it and I really wanna see you explain it ! :) Thanks in advance
Great review! Does the solo variant work well? I'm not likely to play with more than one other player... though would it be possible to put out the maximum amount of players and form some sort of an "AI"??? What do you think?
The game has co-operative rules, which means you can play it solo - controlling all the characters. I have not played that way myself though, so I can't comment on it.
Daaaamn, I never knew this expansion was standalone and I just bought the base game which has less features for pretty much the same price 😭 EDIT: Okay, I just finished the video and I changed my mind. I thought the base game had enough rules to keep on top of, but wow... 😵💫
So now that you have done an expansion to a game that already has a Watch it played for it will you do another Battlecon playthrough on your channel? That would be awesome. Also Seafall is so close! (You should do a watch it played for the seafall prologue game. But IDK how many spoilers that would have and logistics and the such so do what you want.) Great video!
Regarding Raxxon and the experiments - whether the vote was Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down, a new experiment will apply for the following round, correct? So, the main difference is just whether the experiment is discarded (contained) or a special zombie is placed. It's mildly unclear.
I assume when you say "an exploidng trap will remove them you are refering to it being place on the trap as it spawns", as it says in the rule book that special zombies are unaffected by exploding traps.
You get improvement tokens from character abilities, card, etc. Various sources you'll find around the game. You place special zombies by rolling a die for each one, and putting it at the matching location.
I am so unbelievably excited for this! I pre-ordered this along with Seafall, though, so I'm going to have to wait even longer until Seafall comes out ;-; Are you going to do a Watch It Played for Seafall, Rodney?
I have a curse leveled on me that makes my dice rolls always really high (I have NEVER won a round of Ninja Burger, not even one!). Looks like that Raxxon mod might do it to me, huh?
Greetings from Türkiye, it is admirable that you respond to every comment and question even though 7 years have passed since the video. I had a question too, I'd be glad if you could help me. You say in the video that if there is a Special Zombie in the location, the Special Zombie should always be targeted instead of other alternative targets in that location. But does this also apply to Survivors? So if there is a Special Zombie in the location and a Survivor next to me, can I hit the Survivor or should I target the Special Zombie? And also, I have one question too, you said that people in the Raxxon position can place dice on that Audio Log in Raxxon, and if the dice is not placed, Special Zombie will be added to the game. So does this rule apply even if there is no one at Raxxon? So, since there is no one in Raxxon and naturally the dice conditions in Audio Log are not met, is Special Zombie added to the game or does need to be atleast 1 person there for this mechanic to work?
I do my best to answer all rules questions, but I shot this one long enough ago, I don't remember, and I don't have my copy of the game anymore to be able to look it up for you. You might have some success checking on BoardGameGeek.
Question regarding the improvements. Once built - you add another inprovement card. In the rules it only states that you add four cards but not that you continue to add new ones as improvements are built. Could you expand on this? Thanks for a great video!
I'm not sure I'm clear on the question. Is this about something in the video, or something in the rule book specifically. If it's from the rule book, I'm afraid I might not be able to help. I shot this a few years ago, and have sense given my copy of the game to a friend, so I don't have easy access to look this up for you.
@@WatchItPlayed When you develop an improvement you add another one (so that 3 becomes 4 again). I can’t find this addition (of the new card) in the rules... does it make sense?
@@andreasperneby2837 Often times my videos are more up to date than the rule books, because I am able to get clarifications/corrections from the publisher. The video was checked over by them before it was published, so I'm as confident as I can be that the video is correct.
Should I get the long night or the base game? im kinda leaning towards this expansion as my friends owns the original. What will I miss from the base game if I get the expansion?
This has new characters, new crossroad cards and new location deck cards. There are some other cosmetic changes too (like the thicker location boards, but the location boards themselves still work the same way).
Too bad, I'd have loved such a system instead of using my Magic the Gathering sleeves. :P At least the locations are sturdier now. That game is fun (and hard) but a chore to put into place, how's the overkill with adding a module? Also can you use more than one module? What about the standalone part? It uses all the modules?
The box for this is worse than the original dead of winter. Not only does it still have a bad insert, but it's also shallower than the original Dead of winter box, so it's pretty tight.
Hey Rodney, love your channel! I have a question, which of the dead of winter games would you recommend to start with, the original or the stand-alone expansion?
Hey Marco, I can't help you there. I avoid providing recommendations on the channel, as I don't feel qualified to say for someone else what they would like best. It's just not an area I'm comfortable in. Sorry!
Watch It Played I can understand that, I'm going to get both but not at the same time. I was just curious which is best to start with. But thnx for the reply!
I would be thankful if you could make a clarification since the people with whom I play and I aren't native english speakers we ended up having a confusion about the rules. Suppose a player has been found out to be a Traitor, voted to exile and handed his Exiled Secret Objective. It's requirements for victory are to have a card of each type in his hand, the player makes a search, and draws the last card required. Does he automatically wins as the criteria is met? Or he has to wait until the effect 5 of the Colony Phase to declare that he has achieved his secret objective? Thanks for your videos.
Remember, the game only ends if: 1) The morale track reaches 0 the game ends immediately. Do not check to see if the main objective has been completed. 2) If the round track reaches 0 the game ends immediately. Do not check to see if the main objective has been completed. 3) The main objective is completed. A player completing their secret objective does not end the game. Completing your secret objective just determines whether or not you win, when the game does end.
Hi! Nice vídeo and explanation. You made it look easy for someone new to the game! Would you know when is the expansion going to be sold to another countries and on diferente languages? I'm from Brasil and I've got the original DoW in portuguese, so yea, that's why. xD Thanks!!
Thanks for your instruction, but i have 3 question in raxxon module: 1. If survivor not to move in Raxxon, the audio log special zombie will not actived, is it right? 2. When we contribute unused action dice for code to stop special zombie, other players who are not in the Raxxon, can contribute or just survivor in Raxxon ? 3. If more than 1 survivor in Raxxon, the audio log for special zombie will active more than 1 or just 1 ?
Hey Toan, usually I do my best to answer all rules questions, but I shot this long enough ago that I don't recall - and I don't have this game handy to check the rules for you. In this case, you might want to check the rules forums for the game on BoardGameGeek. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful! boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/193037/dead-winter-long-night/forums/66
Hi Rodney, great video! I have a question... Which dice are used for the containment code? Are they dice that are not action dice? I asked this because near the end of the Raxxon explanation, you say they are returned to the general supply?
The containment code dice are from your personal pool, that you rolled for the turn. In essence, your character at Raxxon is spending the effort that would normally go into searching or fighting to keep the zombies contained.
You spend your Action dice for the containment code. I say they returned to the supply at the end of the round, because you always build your dice pool at the start of each new round - so that's when you would collect any dice (for new survivors you gained in the previous round, and for dice that were spent on containment codes).
So, I'm slightly confused... Can you not use weapons or abilities to kill the special zombies? Like when you have the pistol on one of your survivors, that says you don't have to roll for exposure when killing a zombie, I can't use it? Also, what is the rule of placing special zombies, when they come in pairs? I had a hard time understanding the whole raxxon thing when I read it, and I am still not sure I get it...
From the rule book we find: "Special zombies can only be killed with a regular attack. Other game effects such as items and character abilities that do not involve an attack, or explosive traps that would normally kill a zombie do not affect special zombies." So in this case, you can use your pistol against a special zombie, because that is used during a regular attack. Not quite sure I know what your question is regarding the pairs specifically. Typically, if a rules question comes up that relates to card effects, I try to direct them to the publisher for that, as I would just be making my best guess :)
Thanks for the quick reply. I guess that means that the sniperrifles and other stuff that has the once per turn (without stating "when performing an attack") don't work on special zombies then. No more comfortable shots from safety ;-)The other question stemmed from a misunderstanding (once again) when reading the rules. I figuered it out thanks to this video and some more reading of the rules.
Heh, people might have a variety of reasons. They might not like the game chosen, they might not like me - it goes with the territory. As long as you're enjoying it, that's good enough for me :)
Can you also play the regular version of Dead of Winter using the The Long Night box? Or are they two different games with different rules that require that you have both boxes if you wanna play the regular version sometimes and the expansion sometimes?
@@jensb3946 It depends on what you're looking for. They're cross-compatible - so you can use characters and other elements from one game, in the other - but you don't need to have both to be able to enjoy either.
Watch It Played But I’m a bit confused, are there any characters, locations or components in the original game box that is not in the The Long Night box?
Hi there! Another clarifying question: When playing with Raxxon, do the code cards trigger on every round, or are they only triggered if a player sets foot at Raxxon during their turn?
if you are playing with the bandit module, how does it flex with number of players? for instance if you have three players, do you still add two bandits per crisis?
What kind of threat do bandits pose? From my extensive research on apocalyptic bandits (cough video games cough), I would assume they try and raid the colony, attack survivors at locations, and generally be bad neighbors. (Also, the bandits in this look damn near identical to the ones in the game Organ Trail.) And another question, I read the warning that you put on screen for the crossroad cards, but what kind of dark stuff happens with those cards, and do they act as crisis cards? If so, my guess would be that things they include would be stuff like disease, insanity, and probably some grotesque mutations and stuff involving Raxxon experiments.
Most of the mature themes aren't that extreme. They may contain sex, language, suicide, alcohol use, etc. EDIT: And as for the bandits, I'm surprised they don't cause more damage too. I think they basically increase the amount of zombies that spawn, loot potentially awesome items, and take up some valuable space
I noticed a couple differences from the rulebook, and I'm not sure which is correct. You said we draw another improvement card after building one, but the rule book doesn't mention this. Where did this rule come from? Did they just forget to put it in? Also, the rulebook says "explosive traps that would normally kill a zombie do not affect special zombies", but you specifically listed explosive traps as an exception.
Yes, I asked them about the draw rule. I have it correct in the video. I know this is a short video, but I'm just in the middle of a lot of work right now, could you time stamp me to the other moment in the video you are asking about?
Thanks! You talked about killing special zombies at 9:37 with the exploding traps comment at 9:49 . Now that I'm rereading the rulebook, think I see how it could be read either way on explosive traps (Page 18, Containment Code Failure, Paragraph 3)
I would have to say, based on that paragraph, it does seem like explosive traps do not kill special zombies. I'm following up with the publisher. If I hear otherwise, I'll let you know.
Can you help? When special monsters are released from Raxxon is a player under any obligation to kill the zombie or can they just evade them? We played with Raxxon module and the result was just a load of specials on the board that we hadn't fought.

Glad you're liking what you're seeing!

Very pleased to help! Thanks for checking the video out :)
Interesting question - that one, I'm not sure on exactly.
I haven't played this game at all yet. I like the original rules. Can I buy this and just play the original without all the new modules?
The modules are entirely optional.
I ordered it today. Great vid!! but I think it went a little faster then your usually pace.
I'll try to keep an eye on future pacing.
Dang, you replied to every comment? That's some serious dedication! 5-star video btw. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I do my best! Thanks for the kind words on the video :)
Will you ever make a How to Play for Dead of Winter: Warring Colonies, I love how clear you explain the rules these videos definitely help a lot and I feel I learned way more from you than I ever have reading the rule books
Hey, thanks for the interest, but I don’t pre-announcing games I might cover as my schedule can change and I don’t like to disappoint.
@@WatchItPlayed Understandable, do you usually cover games long after they are released? Either way thanks for the reply and keep up the great content!
@@mk4llttv Not often, but sometimes.
Just got my copy yesterday - this is perfect
I hope you have a great time playing!
Haha Me too ~ will try it tmr ~
Thank you very much for this break down, it was very intuitive, would like to ask if you will do a game break down of dead of winter warring colonies? Keep up the great content, have a good day
Thanks for the interest!
i think i'll wait until im fully used to the base game before I try get the expansion :)))
thanks for the vid
You're very welcome!
Man, Dead of Winter, Dead of Winter: Long Night, and the prequel board game Raxxon all has been shown how to play, but Waring Colonies is one I'm still waiting on. The only one that's left. Still hope it gets a how to play video.
I don't believe its in print, and not one I have a copy of, so not likely I'll be covering that title. Cheers.
@@WatchItPlayed it's not in print anymore? I'm glad I got a copy before it was out of print. I didn't know about that. It seemed too soon to be out of print. Apparently it can be bought anywhere from 57 dollars to 38 dollars if it's googled though. Different sights have it
thank you for the best how to EVER!
To kind, glad you liked it :)
Great job! Very good video, as always!
Thanks Xevi!
I just bought the main game in spanish(Dead of Winter: Un juego de encrucijadas) few weeks ago... i can't wait until this game is released in the spanhis version to play it!
Here's hoping you don't have to wait long!
Thanks Rodney! Looking forward to picking up this expansion, since I own and enjoy the base game. I'm a little intimidated with the bandits module, but Raxxon and improvement modules do look intriguing.
You may find it best to introduce one at a time to ease into it :)
#RIPWallet
I just ordered this game and i've watched this video of yours 5-6 times already but still there are things that i have yet to understand...( i watched the DoW crossroad multiple times too) i have 2 question:
1. Raxxon and Bandit Hideout: How to move your character there??? Since there are no 7 or 8 on a dice
2. Special zombie in Raxxon: This is what I think you mean in the video:
In the Colony phase, :
__If there are Dice that match the "Containment code" :
+ Thumb up option win : we'll remove the top card of Raxxon's Experiment cards...
+ Thumb down option win: we'll remove 3 zombies at the colony but we have to unleash the special zombie at a random location (roll the dice)
__ If there are no Dice that match the "Containment code" : we unleash the speacial zombie at random location (roll the dice)
Please answer No.1 and check if No.2 is correct or not...thank you so much...
+Watch It Played
Let's see if I can help.
1. In Dead of Winter, players don't roll dice to decide where they want go. You just pick up your figure and move it to the location you wish to travel to.
2. You've got it.
***** oh thanks so much...love these videos...they're much more helpful than reading the rule in pdf file...and sr for bad English (i'm not native) XD
No worries - glad to help!
Hi,
Great video!
I had a few questions regarding Dead of Winter (TLN) that I was hoping you could please help with:
1) There are two survivors in the deck who’s special abilities only positively help the Raxxon & Improvement modules (Chimp and another I have forgotten the name of). When playing a normal game excluding the modules, do you exclude these survivors when handing out the initial 4 survivors to the players? This would therefore mean that there are only 18 survivors instead of 20. And also on a 5 player game, would mean, two players only have a pool of 3 survivors to pick their main 2 from
2) If, for any reason, all survivors are now in the game and you draw an outsider card. This card is now essentially useless and has no value, correct? Is there anything else than can be done with ‘useless’ cards?
Thanks very much in advance!
1) I don't believe they included specific instructions about that, so I'm not sure what the answer there would be. I did find this thread bout that, but it doesn't have any real answers either: boardgamegeek.com/thread/1698552/not-enough-survivors
2) I would be surprised if you ran out of survivors before the game ended.
"Although an exploding trap at that location will still remove [Special Zombie] (9:49)."
This contradicts the rulebook: "Other game effects such as items and character abilities that do not involve an attack, or explosive traps that would normally kill a zombie does not affect special zombies. (Pg.18)"
So does triggering an explosive trap on a location with a pre-existing special zombie kill the special zombie or not? Thank you.
No. It only kills it if it were the zombie to trigger the barricade/exploding trap.
The rules are right - that's a mistake on my part. I'll have to add that to the notes, for sure. Sorry about any confusion.
Good job Rodney! thanks for explaining it in great detail!
Glad you liked the insights!
+Watch It Played please tell me you guys are going to play dead of winter again with this expansion pack because this I really want to see
I've considered doing it in a live play, but we'll see. I try not to pre-announce any games so I don't disappoint people if things change.
Going to be playing my first game of this today :)
Good luck, hope you survive!
I normally never bother to give videos a thumbs up but I definately did like your two videos about dead of winter thank you so much :) Was fun to learn from you
Thanks so much for the kind words Maximilian!
When searching, do event cards happen immediately or does the active player keep them in their hand until they choose to play it. (Specifically the helpless survivor and new survivor cards.)
They stay in your hand for you to play them when you want.
Rodney! We need a how to video for Dead of Winter Warring Colonies! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thanks for the interest :)
Thank you so much for the video!!!
Glad you found the video helpful! That's actually not a playmat, just a cloth material that's part of the table.
This is a great video. Can you do one about how to combine them? I'm not completely clear on how that would work? Thank you.
I preordered this a while ago, wheres my copy Rodney!! haha man, was pretty excited when i saw this video come up.
Coming soon!

Glad you came by to check it out :)
+Watch It Played yeah. thanks for this tutorial btw. :)
may i just ask if it is possible to play 2 or 3 modules at the same time?
and is it recommended to merge the original and the expansion?
You can play with any combination of the modules. As for merging the games, that's entirely up to what you think you'd prefer.
+Watch It Played i see. noted! thanks alot for taking your time to reply. :)
No problem :)
If you are new to this game would you go for the original or the long night?
I would probably go for the original if I was new.
@@WatchItPlayed thanks I’ll give that a go!
Thank you for this video. In one of their preview posts, Plaid Hat showed a character whose ability triggered on a 6+. I'm dying to know if the game has d8 or higher-sided dice, or if we can use multiple dice per action. How else would the "plus" be possible?
I think that's just to cover if the character gets a modifier to their normal dice roll (only d6s in the game, aside from the Exposure die).
great vid... however do you have any plans on making 'how to play warring colonies'?
Hey there, I talk a bit about that here: ua-cam.com/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/v-deo.html&t=342
The Raxxon module seems a bit complicated :3
After a couple of rounds of play, you'll probably find it clicks.
Let's say Raxxan is worth the risk
Amazing video Rodney, thank you for these! Are you planning on making a video for warring colonies??? Cant wait to play it!
I avoid pre-announcing games we might feature, as my schedule can change and I don't like to disappoint.
No die is required for her ability. It's a free kill.
Thankyou!
this game looks AWESOME !! my group needs to exhaust the base game first before proceeding to snag this one.
if im not mistaken - this is to release to stores within a few weeks now correct?
Early release at Origins (this week), and then hitting retail some time after that - not sure exactly when.
Thanks for the feedback Rodney!
Hi Rodney. Fantastic videos (Dead of Winter, Ashes...)
This is my first contact with this series, I've bought Long Night and already played only two times.
Examples:
#Kevin Jackson - do I need to use a die (attack action) to use his skill once per round ?
Would you recommend purchasing the expansion or the original? Or both? Very interested you are quite the salesman
Thanks for the content!!
can you please do a playthrough with all these modules it would really help all of us please
I don't have any plans to currently Ivan, but thanks for the interest!
I can't wait to play the expansion!!!
Releasing soon!
1) Every round!
2) My understanding is that you could kill them with your weapon in that case.
Ok, thank you!! :)
Other question: Do explosive traps kill Raxxon zombies when they explode, or just kill normal zombies??
Only normal zombies (you'll find a note about this in the description of the video).
@Rodney Hey there. Wanted to ask you if you are planning to make watch it played on This War Of Mine: The Board Game ( recently funded game on kickstarter) It is planned to be released in February :) I pledget for it and I really wanna see you explain it ! :) Thanks in advance
We'll see - I'll need to check it out once it's finished and see if I think it'll fit into the schedule.
Hey Rodney, awesome explanation of this set, wondering if you are going to review the newest expansion Dead of Winter: warring colonies.
Hey Flare, I avoid pre-announcing games I might cover as my schedule can change and I don't like to disappoint.
Daaaamn, I never knew this expansion was standalone and I just bought the base game which has less features for pretty much the same price 😭
EDIT: Okay, I just finished the video and I changed my mind. I thought the base game had enough rules to keep on top of, but wow... 😵💫
Yeah, each has it's benefits for sure.
Hi Rodney! Which one do you think is more worth it for a player that can only afford one: the base game or the long night?
Hey Aqbil, I avoid reviewing or recommending on this channel, as I don't feel I can say for someone else what games they will like more or less.
When is the space themed one supposed to come out?
Not sure yet, they haven't announced.
Coming soon :() Gen 7
So now that you have done an expansion to a game that already has a Watch it played for it will you do another Battlecon playthrough on your channel? That would be awesome. Also Seafall is so close! (You should do a watch it played for the seafall prologue game. But IDK how many spoilers that would have and logistics and the such so do what you want.)
Great video!
I'd like to do a prologue play through of Seafall - we'll see!
Regarding Raxxon and the experiments - whether the vote was Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down, a new experiment will apply for the following round, correct? So, the main difference is just whether the experiment is discarded (contained) or a special zombie is placed. It's mildly unclear.
Yes, there will always be anew experiment visible on the top of the deck for the next round.
I assume when you say "an exploidng trap will remove them you are refering to it being place on the trap as it spawns", as it says in the rule book that special zombies are unaffected by exploding traps.
This was a mistake in our video, you'll find a note about this in the description above. Sorry for any confusion.
Thanks for a great overview! I think i really need to add this to my current copy of DoW. =O)
Glad you enjoyed!
Two questions how do you get improvement tokens? if a special zombie is released who decides where it goes?
You get improvement tokens from character abilities, card, etc. Various sources you'll find around the game.
You place special zombies by rolling a die for each one, and putting it at the matching location.
I am so unbelievably excited for this! I pre-ordered this along with Seafall, though, so I'm going to have to wait even longer until Seafall comes out ;-; Are you going to do a Watch It Played for Seafall, Rodney?
We'll see... ;)
awesome thank you for this!!!
You're very welcome!
I have a curse leveled on me that makes my dice rolls always really high (I have NEVER won a round of Ninja Burger, not even one!). Looks like that Raxxon mod might do it to me, huh?
Maybe :)
Hey Rodney, if using the Bandit module, what happens if more than one person is exiled? Are both leaders of the bandits?
Remember, if at any time there are 2 exiled players and neither had a betrayal secret objective, morale immediately drops to 0.
I actually did not remember that. Thanks for the reminder!
My pleasure :)
@@WatchItPlayed Thank you for the advice
Does the game come with a better organization system inside the box? I had to make my own out of foam core for the original game.
It's the same as the previous game.
Too bad, I'd have loved such a system instead of using my Magic the Gathering sleeves. :P
At least the locations are sturdier now.
That game is fun (and hard) but a chore to put into place, how's the overkill with adding a module?
Also can you use more than one module? What about the standalone part? It uses all the modules?
You can use as many, or as few of the modules as you want.
*****
Cool, thanks! Do we know if there's any localization plans?
You're welcome. Hope you have a great time playing!
Remember, the game only ends if:
1) The morale track reaches 0 the game ends immediately.
I'm from Brasil and I've got the original DoW in portuguese, so yea, that's why. xD Thanks!!
Hey - I'm not sure, but you might want to ask Plaid Hat Games directly (maybe even on Twitter). Glad you liked the video!
K, thnx!
Thanks for your instruction, but i have 3 question in raxxon module:
@@WatchItPlayed Thanks a lot
Other game effects such as items and character abilities that do not involve an attack, or explosive traps that would normally kill a zombie do not affect special zombies."
So in this case, you can use your pistol against a special zombie, because that is used during a regular attack.
THIS GAME SOUND AWESOME VERY DEEP LUCKLY I CATCH THIS VIDEO BEFOE I BROUGHT THE ORIGINAL GAME WILL GET THIS ONE INSTEAD!! MANY THANKS
Sup bro
John Y get the original add collection
Who gives a thumb down on this video!? Seriously!
Hey Jens - the contents of each box are different, but you can choose to play the Long Night without the additional modules, if you want.
Watch It Played Ok, so there would be no point in having both boxes?
@@jensb3946 It depends on what you're looking for. They're cross-compatible - so you can use characters and other elements from one game, in the other - but you don't need to have both to be able to enjoy either.
Watch It Played Ok, thanks for the quick replies! It really is awesome being able to get answers to your questions on an almost five year old video.
They trigger every round.
if you are playing with the bandit module, how does it flex with number of players? for instance if you have three players, do you still add two bandits per crisis?
There aren't adjustments for number of players.
What kind of threat do bandits pose? From my extensive research on apocalyptic bandits (cough video games cough), I would assume they try and raid the colony, attack survivors at locations, and generally be bad neighbors.
(Also, the bandits in this look damn near identical to the ones in the game Organ Trail.)
And another question, I read the warning that you put on screen for the crossroad cards, but what kind of dark stuff happens with those cards, and do they act as crisis cards?
If so, my guess would be that things they include would be stuff like disease, insanity, and probably some grotesque mutations and stuff involving Raxxon experiments.
I haven't actually cracked into those Crossroad cards yet, so I'm not sure.
Most of the mature themes aren't that extreme. They may contain sex, language, suicide, alcohol use, etc.
EDIT: And as for the bandits, I'm surprised they don't cause more damage too. I think they basically increase the amount of zombies that spawn, loot potentially awesome items, and take up some valuable space
where would you suggest buying this game? I bought the original one from amazon.
Thank you
It's expected to release around July/August. At that time, you should be able to find it in a lot of places.
how many times can a character move from place to place per turn?
CrazyGames Once per turn.
Overall, is the expansion more difficult than the first game? Or does each have its own areas that make them different?
Difficulty would be hard for me to assess, without first playing several more games of this new version.
Can you please make a tutorial video for 'Dead of winter: warring colonies' too?
Thanks for the interest! I talk a bit about that here: ua-cam.com/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/v-deo.html&t=342
Can you play all 3 modules at once? Or, 2 of the 3 modules? Or is it advised to only add 1 module per game?
You can play all of them, but I'd recommend introducing them one at a time, at first - just so people aren't overwhelmed by all the new stuff.
Can you help? When special monsters are released from Raxxon is a player under any obligation to kill the zombie or can they just evade them? We played with Raxxon module and the result was just a load of specials on the board that we hadn't fought.
You don't have to fight them, but they will fill up the spaces at the locations.
