Agree 100%, this is just plain good manners, good showmanship and proof that you genuinely are a decent and upstanding person. A few years ago, I made the conscious effort to stop belting out "ladies and gentlemen" all the time on stage. It wasn't entirely easy, like you say, but these days it really feels good to call me audience "my dear friends". I honestly thinks that it brings us closer.
being honest, i have no idea who you are, but a friend of mine posted this video on their social media, and i desperately appreciate seeing this sentiment need so much more of it not nonbinary myself, but i have so many nonbinary friends and they deserve so much more
Thank you so much. I wondered what to say besides "Ladies and Gentlemen". I keep falling back on "Howdy folks" from when I worked a country/western show. 😂 Just saying "friends" is so much easier. Thank you!!
I used to watch a music review channel and they would always say... "HELLO LADIES, GENTLEMEN AND GENDERS!"... As a Gender, it always warmed my heart every time I heard them say that! 😊
I love it! We who work in the arts do struggle to find a way of addressing fellow humans. For a while, I would say "hello, beautiful peoples!" but one culture took offence at being referred to as "peoples," so that was out. I now default to "fellow humans," as "friends", while great for audiences, is not always great for coworkers. I had someone take offence at "friends," and they archly pointed out that they were "NOT, in fact, your friend," so.... fellow humans it is. "Fellow" is gender neutral, so I'm working with that. But for you, a performer, "friends" is perfect and beautifully simple! Thank you for this, Mat.
Interesting - I'm curious what the objection of "peoples" was.. I call audiences "my friends" - my feeling is that, unless something has gone wrong, for the time we're together, we're friends, and behave as such.
Bullying always seem to be down to the bully's insecurities. The gender spectrum is no different, people don't like their world view challenged, they feel threatened. Science changes, attitudes don't change as fast. That school was a pretty hard place if you were different. And we are all different.
What a considerate and well composed video. As you said, if there's a small change that people can make that will have a positive impact on others... why not make it??
A very lovely and well thought out thesis. I try to use folks when entertaining or more casual environment. I use colleagues in a lot of work environments, but I struggle with mixed audiences to find a term that works for me. I would love to use friends, but as a senior NHS manager, it is hard....Still trying....
Hi Mat, I had this bought to my attention. I'm a performer too, and what you said at the end about it taking a few months is so true. As soon as I realised that this little phrase was ingrained into me, I realised I couldn't take 'Ladies and Gentlemen' out of my performances, but also realised I could ADD to it. I now say 'Ladies, Gentlemen and People of all Stripes and Rainbows.' Still using the 'Ladies and Gentlemen' bit but adding the inclusivity of a final greeting to others of other genders, or no gender.
I recently did MC duties at a slightly conservative venue, and said "Ladies and gentlemen, and everyone in between". Thanks for giving some other options...
Hi Mat, great video with a great message.. It sort of reminds me of a story last year that M&S changed their "Midget Gems" sweets to "Mini Gems".. A sweet which I'm fairly sure no one has eaten since 1999.. Suddenly headlines read "woke snowflakes cancel classic sweet!" People sometimes just like something to be angry about. If people (or even one person) feel upset or left out or ostricised, and that can be changed with the minimal effort to everyone.. Then, why not change it? And to use myself as an example. I have redhair. I was bullied for it throughout primary and secondary school, and it was referred to as ginger.. Now I will always correct people to say red. It's a word which has zero positive conotations to me. If people use the word purposefully to get my back up, I ignore them.. After I slash their tyres.
Nice video again. Being on stage gives you great responsibility. Being an entertainer you have to remember you are there to entertain. Nothing annoys me more when I see entertainers trying to make a political statement. Just by moving on, choosing a suitable alternative without dwelling on the fact you have changed your script, acknowledging the changing world and accepting it shows how you completely and wholeheartedly understand your role on stage and you have acknowledged you respect your audience. In a way it also encourages creativity as you now have to search for alternative words. Thank you.
I’ve been doing this in panto scripts and performances for a few years now and it makes a world of difference. Thank you for summing it up so succinctly! ❤
Wonderful Matt you've encapsulated my whole feelings about this and more. Spectacularly erudite and perfectly easy to understand for even the hardest of thinking among us. Have a brilliant show, may it sell out and you bring the house down.
Well said. Thank you. Now, if I could just get people to stop calling me "Dave"... Ah, well. Would like to hear more about what you say instead. You breezed by it at the end. Wondering if you're settling on anything that is working as a straight up replacement.
I love the fact you also included nationalities. I get very often mislabelled (my nation is spread across three countries and therefore carry three types of passports) or worse people have labelled me as a nation that invaded, raped and pillaged my nation and they think it is funny.
Ladles and gentlemen fits the bill in any environment ... even if there ruffians in the crowd that are quite frankly not ladies and gentlemen. It matters not. Your virtue signaling is your choice. However you mental gymnastics to present your reasoning is incredibly desperate and pale. Your choice, obviously. Top Mark's for virtue signaling on such a bland topic though.
A wonderful video (I just followed a link here from Joly Boat) I opened with Theydees and GentleThem for a while, but a non binary audience member said there was a bit of baggage with the term. I didn't need specifics, I just promised to change it. Now I simply open with a humble "People of Earth, your attention please!"
You really are a tremendously decent person.
awwww

Thanks - and yes, i feel it brings us all closer too
A beacon of common sense and decency, as always. Love the Pluto analogy.
thanks!

Hey thanks!
Thank you so much. I wondered what to say besides "Ladies and Gentlemen". I keep falling back on "Howdy folks" from when I worked a country/western show. 😂 Just saying "friends" is so much easier. Thank you!!
You sir, are an amazing man. In many ways. Thank you for your thoughts 🙂
So nice of you
I used to watch a music review channel and they would always say...

As a Gender, it always warmed my heart every time I heard them say that! 😊
Wonderfully put. ❤ Thank you and Bravo Mat! 😊
Thanks so much!
Thank you very much!
Thank you for your well articulated thoughts! I agree completely! :-)
Thanks!

@@MatRicardo I believe they were Cantonese, so it must not translate well in their mother tongue? I didn’t want to ask and cause more offence.

Absolutely
You're a good one Mat
I try!
What a considerate and well composed video. As you said, if there's a small change that people can make that will have a positive impact on others... why not make it??
What a really nice little video to explain what can sometimes seem a complicated issue.
Thanks!
I love this! And that’s what we should all be for each other… friends!
yes!
Necessary content on our line of work! I agree with you and its something super important to talk about!
aww thanks
What an absolutely wonderful take. If only more people in the world were like you!😊
awww thanks

I've come to prefer "ladies, gentlemen, and all distinguished guests."
Excellent Matt, right with you and doing the same myself for some time! 🙏🧡
Well and gently said. This will open minds. Thank you very much.
aww thanks so much
Many thanks for this video. Gonna be hard to replace the phrase, but definitely time to do so.
Good morning, civilians
Really well explained. Just be nice people.
simple as that!
Thank you for this!
My pleasure!

That's awesome. Kids won't give it a second thought, and your teaching inclusivity by casual example

🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Thank you. I call my students ladies and gentlemen. I shall be cognizant of my ex/inclusiveness going forward. Again, thank you.
amazing! nice one!

I'm jealous of your passport collection! And thanks, yeah, thats not funny...
Love you, friend 🏳️🌈

I wish more people felt this way.❤️🩹
