I agree with a few of the commenters in the disappointment of the true nature of this app. The app appears to be a sandboxed environment that provides hooks to productivity web pages much like when apps (like Twitter) open web pages within their UI instead of sending you out to Safari. I agree that this app is creative in filling a need that is sorely needed in iPadOS. However, I feel that it is a little disingenuous to present this app as a solution to what many of us (including you from the sound of it) are hoping for. I think it would have been more transparent of you to say that while the app does not open a user's installed apps in its desktop environment, it does provide solutions that MAY satisfy some users' workflows. Since the app developer reached out to you (and sponsored the video), it would have been good if you had asked them specifically about the ability to open installed apps within their environment and then reported their answer on the video. I do appreciate you disclosing their sponsorship of the video. However the lack of a critical review of the app tarnishes an otherwise well produced video.

In my opinion the iPadOS needs to offer floating windows that are accesses by swiping up without a keyboard or using the trackpad gestures. At this point, either Apple makes major changes to iPadOS or iPad Pro sales will begin to tank because people will not see that value in spending that much for an essentially glorified iOS experience. I am a long time iPad Pro user and currently have the 2021 12.9 model with the Magic Keyboard, and as much as I love the setup, it’s overkill for what the iPad can do.
Absolutely agree. Probably the reason why I use my iPad mini all the time and the Pro is collecting dust mostly now. It's just a better looking bigger version of the mini. All the other hardware advantages go to waste because of the poor OS.
Also needs external camera support. Hope Samsung knocks it out of the park with the Galaxy TabS8 Series hardware and software. Great vid mate. And yes I think many of us bought the iPadPro for what it could be rather than what it actually is. My use case that ai dreamed of is exactly like yours Sadly the iPad Pro 12.9 makes no sense. Sold mine. The Mini or Pro 11, sure because they are portable enough to be considered just a tablet and so the limitations in iPadOS is less felt. But once you get to the Pro 12.9 and it's price, the limitations of iPadOS and the whole "what is a PC" aka this can be your only device idea falls apart quickly. Reality is iPadOS is still just glorified iOS and at the last event it was clear Apple still positions the iPad as a accessory or companion device. Until they fix some basics you are better of just buying a MacBook Desperately needed in iPadOS 1. Multi User support like MacOS, Windows, Linux, Unix, Android has had for ages. Heck even Android TV 2. External screen output at native external screen resolution and not just screen mirror but a proper second screen 3. Definitely expected more from the file manager, at least offering ability to format external storage with different filesystems. Seems like they finally got a copy status indicator. 4. Support more filesystems for external storage 5. Consolidate all input device settings for keyboard, mouse, pen, game controllers in one menu option rather than scattered everywhere 6. On the topic of mouse and keyboard the use of it can still be improved, mouse input using web office productivity apps on Safari is still flakey for both O365 and Google Docs. 7. Need a proper app tray. At least we finally got one like iOS got last year already, but still way off MacOS, Android or pretty much any other OS has had for many years. I really really don't need all my damn apps on my desktop like I'm a toddler. 8. Ability to place widgets and shortcuts anywhere allowing me to have a clean clutter free desktop. Even now saying you can is total BS when in actual fact they still force the top left grid layout 9. Full on MacOS Safari and Chrome from the Mac. Not glorified desktop like mobile versions. Online design services like Marvel Apps or even AWS consoles work well on desktop but simply does not work well on iPad. Heck some online services like Sendgrid, the console just crashes on login. 12. Hopefully all that Mac Silicone productivity/pro apps make their way to iPad too like full MS Office rather than the current gimped mobile version. Would love to also see Flutter, final cut, Adobe suite, xcode on it.
Hey Iván. Not really. There are some really cool ways you can emulate the experience, like this shiftscreen app. But I wouldn't abandon my computer just yet.
It only works with the apps within the environment. The developer is adding new apps but the offer if currently limited to the apps that are withing Shiftscreen.
@@PatrickRambles thanks Patrick. I’m an app user via my 365 sub. I upgraded from a 5year old iPad to the M1 12.9 pro, wow awesome in so many ways. I’m retired but have a tech background although when I started work there weren’t even any hand held calculators, well apart from a slide rule. Have been subscribing to your channel for quite a while, enjoy your reviews , cheers Chris.
I’ve been wanting something like this for awhile .. does it support all of Apple’s native apps? The fact that you mentioned video calling but not FaceTime had me concerned.
Hi Harrison, no it doesn't. I view it very much as a working concept. It has a number of integrated apps and it works with web apps, but it doesn't work with all of our installed apps.
@@PatrickRambles okay, that’s what I was assuming because the “app drawer” looked fairly limited. Still looks like a nice concept, but hopefully they’ll make strides to add features/apps and make the experience more polished. Thanks!
Hi Patrick, recent subscriber to your channel enjoying many of your vids. This one seems to leave a lot unanswered though Patrick, it looks really good, and you said its not a gimmick but you casually said they are adding more apps ? So it obviously doesn’t work with all apps but you did not mention which apps it does work with? And please tell me you’re not ‘recommending ‘an in app browser as a serious desktop solution, that could track everything you do have you got any information about it? What search engine does it use, can you change it? Extensions? The AppStore description is as vague as this review was on these questions. Can you please clarify did you present everything this app can do in this video? In app unknown browser, youtube, calculator and Notion? What about email aggregators? Video editing or Procreate? Can I still use the Apple Pencil? Messages? Notifications? Is there a list of what will work or is it just web apps? Because that my friend is really just a gimmick is it not?
Hi Toby, thanks for the kind words. Yes, it's limited to the optimized apps within the app environment and the browser of course. And yes the developer will keep adding apps. Imagine how difficult it can be for developers to optimize their own single app for full screen use with iPadOS, expecting a single developer to optimize all of them isn't realistic. I recommend the app because I love the concept and because it has potential, I look forward to see where they take it. As for the security concerns, I understand what you're saying, but I will have to trust Apple and the vetting process they have in place before apps are allowed to be sold in the App Store.
Notice you have a yellow skin on back of your iPad. Does this stop heat dissipation when taking the iPad off the stand and then putting it inside a case such as the fab Zugu case, especially when charging in the case.
Hi Paul, haven't notice any negative effects due to the skin. The M1 chip should be relatively good at keeping cool. My iPad lives inside the magic keyboard case when it's not on a stand and it's been fine.
@@PatrickRambles thanks Patrick I actually have your yellow skin here and the yellow lens protector for the iPad, so on they will go tomorrow. Thanks for you very helpful UA-cam clips on technology which have really helped me get the best out of the M1 iPad. By the way have you found a way of connecting a webcam to an iPad.. all the best from 45k just below Sydney Au on the coast.Paul
Hi Paul, thanks for the kind words :). I haven't found a way to connect a web cam to the iPad but I must admit I haven't really tried. For my zoom calls I generally sit at my desk (with my Mac Mini) and if I do use my iPad for calls on the go, I'll choose the convenience of the built in web cam over the quality of an external one. Will be an interesting one to find out though!
This is what infuriates me so much about Apple. The market is begging for Apple to make the iPad Pro a true laptop (or even desktop) replacement, but they continue to handicap it so a lot of people also still have to buy a MacBook of some sort if they want to be truly productive. And, of course, none of the MacBooks have touch screens. This is Apple's way of taking as much money from you as possible. Meanwhile, the Microsoft Surface exists as a full tablet AND a full computer, along with many other hybrid Windows devices.
Right! Shiftscreen has come a long way ... meanwhile to an app store rating of 1.8. And people are not only ranting there. They have good reason to find the tool kinda useless in the moment.
Correction. The Lg comes with virtually no instructions. I discovered how to change the input options by mistake, On off switch is also a toggle that directs to options for the monitor. Nice of them to tell us that. Not a simple plug and play. Works.
Hi Patrick. Loved the vid, thanks. If I’m buying a new screen should I get one with a built in camera? Will shift screen transfer the camera for vid calls and zoom?
Hey! That's a great question and to be honest I don't know. I don't have a screen with camera built in. Having said that, did you see the new camera features in iPadOS 16 combined with the new MacOS?
OK! Sold. Getting it for my 12.9" 2 gig iPad Pro. So, my big question, being a power user. I have the M1 iPad Pro, the 13 Pro Max, my 16" MacBook Pro. Do I make the investment in the iPad mini? Sooo appealing. Every time I go to make notes on the iPad Pro with the pencil I think about the size. Whatcha think? Worth the investment?
I have a similar setup. It's hard to say man, the iPad mini is so fun, it's definitely my favorite everyday device right now. But it's probably not a tablet I "need". If your budget allows it, I definitely recommend it as an additional device. Terribly decadent 😅
So far there aren’t any native editing apps in shiftscreen yet. I mean you could edit on the external monitor, but that would be outside of shiftscreen and with the black bars.
Lumafusion and iMovie let you share the video that you are editing to the monitor. I mean, the video is on the monitor and all the different caps you’re aditing are in the iPad.
Great video Patrick. I was really hoping iPadOS 15 would make it possible to use my M1 iPad Pro 12.9” as my main computer but was very disappointed in Apple not making it so. Just purchased the Samsung M7 32’’ to use as a monitor for my iPad and your video has helped me to decide to buy shiftscreen to improve my experience, thank you again for brilliant video Patrick.
Great Video - will this work usb-c/thunderbolt to HDMI ?? my current monitor doesn't support USBC Cheers (New iOS user after a very long time since being an apple user)
Shift screen just does browser windows. I will wait for apple to get apps. In the mean time I will stick to my MacBook for work, and my iPad for content and communications.
Hi Patrick. Great Apple videos as always. I would like to know if the new iPad mini 6 (2021) is able to connect to your same monitor in this video or any Samsung tv for gaming? If possible what cables do I need? Thanks.
Hi Cheryl, and thanks! Yep, because the iPad Mini 6 has usb C now, you can hook it up to the same things as the Pro. It depends on the monitor which cable you need. More recent monitors often have a direct usb c to usb c connection. Almost all other monitors have an HDMI connection. All you need then is a dongle for your iPad mini that includes an HDMI port. You can get 7-in-1 dongles on Amazon for 10-20 dollars. I can recommend Anker for great bang for buck.
I really like what I see in ShiftScreen app. I’m retired and I’m not working at all but I travel quite a bit. I’ll be upgrading from iPad Mini 2 to Mini 6, from iPhone SE 2 to 13 Mini, and Apple Watch Series 3 to Series 7 in a couple weeks. I travel with my iPad Mini and I don’t need the extended features of the iPad Pro but I’d like to have a comfortable home computing platform. My current plan is to get the iPad Air with a Magic Keyboard for home use and download ShiftScreen but I haven’t decided whether to buy now or wait for iPad Air’s next iteration. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you!🙏
It's a well made video and raises some interesting points. But the video makes it seem like shiftscreen can make you use your apps in fullscreen when in reality you can basically use a browser and web apps and nothing else. It's quite misleading to leave that limitation out, sponsored video or not. It was the first video I saw by Patrick and after it I don't think I can trust anything he's saying as it seems to be basically a bpught ad, and not even an honest one.
Sorry you feel that way. I clearly point out that shiftscreens environment is limited to the native apps but that the developer is working on adding new apps over time.
@@PatrickRambles I stand corrected. But that still makes it sound like there would be a chance of shiftscreen adding just about any native app - where only webapps will work.
Great video! I’m thinking about purchasing an M1 iPad Pro for when I start traveling again with my Fuji cameras. Quick question for you. With iOS 15 were you able to do a speed test (download time) of downloading (for example) a 32 gig UHS-II SD card with a UHS-II card reader to the M1 iPad Pro? and backing up the same full 32 gig card data to Samsung T5? That was my workflow when I traveling to Cuba and Guatemala with the previous model iPad Pro. Keeping it simple, sleek. Returning back to United States with all data on the iPad, the Samsung T5, and 8 SanDisk Ext Pro memory cards. I’m trying to ascertain if there is a software bottleneck or hardware bottleneck with the new in one iPad. If it’s not much faster I mayyyyy. just stick with what I have for another year. Thanks in advance
There are a couple of tests on the channel from when the M1 came out. Not the specific test you describe but they include file transfers. Totally understand the worflow though, that is pretty much the only reason for me that justifies the huge internal storage on the 16GB M1 iPads.
Hi Patrick, great video!! I was/on on the verge of switching my ecosystem from Apple to Samsung in order to make use of DeX through either Galaxy Tab or phone. Can you use iPad OS MS Office app (or the individual Word, Excel, Outlook apps) on Shiftscreen?
Hi Yanik, no. Shiftscreen is limited to its apps and whatever apps are available in browser form. It's definitely a concept rather than a mature environment, but it's interesting and I hope it gives apple a nudge to do better. I've been a long time Android user and Samsung Dex us definitely more evolved. But the fact always remains that most apps are simply not optimized for Android and other apps don't even exist on Android. For that reason I can't switch back.
I found the App list working with shift screen is very limited but if you use a lot of browser windows it works very well. And it’s not a couple of bucks - at least not in the UK - it’s almost £7. So I am hoping the app list increases. I’d already bought it once so did buy the new version. Support the Devs and all that.
Hi Jan, yes, if we go by the strict definition of a couple, you are right sir :). Fully agree the app list is limited. The potential is great, I can't wait what they will do with the app in future updates.
@@PatrickRambles actually it's not Jan as in John. I'm actually as woman. But that's not the point. And I totally agree it's got Fab potential. I don't begrudge the money.
I am sold! Take my money! Thanks so much mate just lost my job and my MacBook Pro but had the new M1 iPad Pro but my widescreen looked stupid. This is awesome. Legend!
Which screen are you using now? Which screen is best for iPad and which will be best for Mac Mini Pro M2 would you estimate!? thanks! Hoping for a Mac Mini Pro M2 before Christmas 😇🤔🙄😁 Do you think is likely, probable, or definitely not?
I'm using an LG ultrawide for my Mac Mini and I love it. But it's an acquired taste, I bought it mainly for video editing so I can see as much of my timeline as possible. It's great for multitasking too. Not sure about the M1X mini. M1X MacBook Pro is highly anticipated for the fall event but there are rumors of a 2022 Mac Mini refresh.

Even now saying you can is total BS when in actual fact they still force the top left grid layout
I have the iPad 11 pro, do you think that I could use it as computer on a ultra wide 34 inch monitor with a good full screen?
Hey Iván. Not really. There are some really cool ways you can emulate the experience, like this shiftscreen app. But I wouldn't abandon my computer just yet.
Does it only work with apps that use split view? My M1 Pro is jailbroken and every app has split-view so this would be super helpful.
It only works with the apps within the environment. The developer is adding new apps but the offer if currently limited to the apps that are withing Shiftscreen.
I have a asus touchscreen and Ask you Is it possible to use with a IPad Pro 11 and the touch function. Thanks
As far as I'm aware, external touch screens only work with Android.
I got the app but it says it doesn’t detect a monitor
Hi what gamepad do you use with iPad Pro?
Playstation 5 dualsense controller
Could you open Keynote? Or Numbers or LumaFusion?? As worker or creator?
No, for now it's just the native apps. The developer keeps adding news apps but I imagine it's a lengthy process to optimize them.
@@PatrickRambles yes. That is a dissapointing. Thank you.
can you please give me the app name
Shiftscreen. It's in the video description :)
Does anyone know the name of the song which is in the intro?? 🤔
The Vyper, by Suedo. You can find it on epidemic sound :)
@@PatrickRambles thanks for the answer and also your great videos 👌
Thank you :)
What stand are you using
It’s a new one called the Magflött. I’ll be reviewing it in detail soon!
What is the name and size of the external monitor?
Hey man, LG HDR WQHD Display 34inch
Thanks for helping me decide to go for Samsung Tab S8+
How does it go with Word, Excel and the other MS Office products ?
Hi, the office suite as apps are not yet supported (new apps added regularly) but anything that works in a browser, will work on shiftscreen.
Thanks Chris, I appreciate that!
Hi Pat, thank you for the video! Can you tell me where to buy that iPad stand for writing?
Thanks! Sure : geni.us/jLQjpqF
Have you tried Stage Manager/ External Display with a Thunderbolt 4 dock? Like the TS4? Does it work? Really curious!
Not yet but good idea!
@@PatrickRambles Let me know if you're able to get it to work, I'd really appreciate it :)
Thanks!
Can you use brave or Safari browser ?
Nope. It's still limited to the apps it has natively. I do know that the developer is constantly trying to add more apps
@@PatrickRambles cheers for the reply
@@PatrickRambles an external camera would be great to connect to help my Art teaching on the go on Zoom. Thanks for responding.
That makes sense.
Works.
Hey great video patrick! does app support lumafusion and good note 5 for full screen?? thanks!
Hey! Sadly no. That would be awesome! It's limited to the native apps but the developers is adding new apps over time.
can you play geforce through shiftscreen?
Just the apps in its environment and the browser. New apps will added soon though.
Another great video. How do you get the black and white icons in the dock?
Hey Grant, those are from my custom icons pack! I did a video on how to do it : ua-cam.com/video/QteZ69OiF4A/v-deo.html
Shiftscreen is great if you don’t want to use any apps that you need to use.
Can you edit video in the external monitor? It will be nice to have a big video preview screen while editing.
Thanks Malcolm!
Great Video - will this work usb-c/thunderbolt to HDMI ?? my current monitor doesn't support USBC Cheers (New iOS user after a very long time since being an apple user)
Hi Piers, absolutely. All you need is a usb c dongle that includes an HDMI port.
What about connect to printer
Via WiFi.
Hello thx for the video.. can I use this app with RD Client? thank you
Hi, no. This app only supports native apps and web apps within its own environment.
@@PatrickRambles bummer ... do you know any app that supports?
How do I make sure purchases get kick backs to you? Just click on the links in the description?
Hi Joahua, thanks for asking, that's very thoughtful. Some links in the description will be affiliate links, yes
Wow! Your studio is really professional!

What’s the UA-cam subscriber counter thing to the right of your monitor? Looks intriguing
Hey! It's the Divoom Pixoo 64.
@@PatrickRambles Awesome! Thanks! Keep up the great work!
Thanks!
I bought an Ipad Pro and it's just sat on my desk for about a WEEK! xD I need to get some more use out of it!
It's a very capable device!
Shift screen just does browser windows. I will wait for apple to get apps. In the mean time I will stick to my MacBook for work, and my iPad for content and communications.
Hi Michael, yeah in no way does any of this replace your MacBook. The way I see shiftscreen is a nudge to Apple to do better by a clever developer.
@@PatrickRambles I will check out that 7-in-1 dongle. Thanks for your reply.
Great production level on your vid. Clean “studio” area too. Keep it up got a new sub

@@PatrickRambles I didn’t saw the price, 60 € that is quite expensive for a stand
True. But it's very solid and heavy. Maybe you can find a good black Friday deal 👀
Thank you!🙏
The mini 6 is actually capable of doing the exact same thing with shiftscreen :)
@@PatrickRambles Sold! Thank you!
You still have your ipad mini 2? He still works?
Hm. I see what you mean. Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it.
I would recommend waiting for the m2 iPad Pro
bro your videos are useful :)
Thank you!
DEX is soo much better than ipad os.
You're comparing a feature to an operating system.
Apologies. The profile pics are very small, I suppose the cowboy hat threw me off :)

Which screen is best for iPad and which will be best for Mac Mini Pro M2 would you estimate!?

Hoping for a Mac Mini Pro M2 before Christmas 😇🤔🙄😁
Do you think is likely, probable, or definitely not?
I'm using an LG ultrawide for my Mac Mini and I love it. But it's an acquired taste, I bought it mainly for video editing so I can see as much of my timeline as possible. It's great for multitasking too. Not sure about the M1X mini. M1X MacBook Pro is highly anticipated for the fall event but there are rumors of a 2022 Mac Mini refresh.
