Fantastic video, Mike. I really am going to miss the 59s. From their wheezy K5LAs, to their triumphant roar as they departed a station in notch 8, the F59s have become icons of SoCal railroading. Makes me so glad I was able to make a trip out to film them a few months ago. As sad as I am to lose these units from the Surfline, I am thrilled that they have a long life ahead of them with Metra. From what I hear, Metra engineers and conductors already love them. Roll on, Fighting59s, roll on!
Galaxykid*.* Tier 0? I think you mean Tier 3, most of Metra’s fleet of locomotives have been rebuilt with new headend power systems and have the ability to give off less emissions...same thing goes for the F59PHI as well so technically this locomotive is not a Tier 0 and is one that I truly love especially seeing along the Pacific Ocean plus the SC-44 Chargers lack many things that the F59s have which include the high cab and the better aerodynamic design... 🚅
@Galaxykid*.* the media looks everything look like dogshit (I bet that is where you got that from)
I'm sad to see them go but glad that they weren't cut up.
I didn't get to see many of them but the ones I did see were a great sight to behold on my two trips to SoCal back in 2011/12.
5:28 I love the sound of that K5LA
Hope they can handle the Chicago winters.
they do very well already heard huge praise this guy on another vid said that metra should have just gotten these 20 years ago instead of the mp36, basically the best engine since the f40s
Yes it’s a bit of a change for these West Coast Cali girls! They’ll do great.
Yeah I think the sunny west coast weather will have the locomotives in much better shape for the winter weather than all of the other locomotives here despite their age.
Actually, Metra made a better choice at purchasing the MP36’s because back then they were Tier 1 compliant while the F59’s weren’t. Also, if Metra would have purchased the F59’s instead of MP36’s, would they have replaced the F40C’s as well?
It is kinda unfortunate that these awesome engines have had to be bumped out of service by the Chargers, but on the positive side, they are starting a new career with Metra, and will remain alive for several years to come. Btw, 451 was sent east only yesterday.
@@zaclynchofficial8191 uhm, I saw 451 on the SWC on Virtual Railfan's Barstow CA webcam
I sure will miss the F59PHI locomotives. I remember when I was a little kid. I remember their engine sound, very loud. You will never be forgotten, thank you for your service.
See you soon F59PHI locomotives.
They sure will be missed.
It really is a shame they're leaving the west coast, very happy they are finding a new home and not becoming cabbages
They wouldn’t look good as cabbages. Would look better as my kitchen silverware.
A cabbage is a combination cab car/baggage car. They were converted from old F40PHs.
Fitting to have the last shot of an F59PHI leading a train into the sunset, with its replacement trailing at the end of the train
It's like if the old 59s are giving the new chargers a tour before it's in service. BTW so far the 59s aren't in their new metra paint schemes.
Actually, although veterans, the PHI’s, P42’s, and Dash 8’s didn’t need to give the new Chargers a SoCal tour. These new locomotives were built in California, so their used to the Pacific.
At least they'll be active elsewhere. I will miss you F59s. 😭😥
Well, it was fun while they lasted. It’s only 2 years before the Genesis locomotives also get replaced by more SC-44s. But you know these locomotives were getting old and if they keep running them they will have multiple mechanical issues and incidents.
Amtrak already placed 70 orders of SC-44 For long distance service and commuter service also. They will start rolling out in 2020.
I'm so glad that the F59PHI engines weren't scrapped. They got sent to Metra. Even my favorite one 458 that was involved in an Oxnard train crash.
I heard a lot of f59PHIs are still on Amtrak California's Capitol Corridor and San Joaquin services🙂☺
Thomas Palmer are you excited about the f59PHIs received by Metra?
@@allisonreithmeier4811 well yes. It will be cool seeing them in the Metra scheme.
Capital corridor uses P42DC just like the south west chief coast starlight and San Joaquin
#469 pulled my first Amtrak Ride.... farewell old friend
5:28 470 has a pretty nice K5LA
I’ve always liked the F59’s from their streamlined design to their “interesting” horns. But it’s time to pass the baton to the chargers as the new face of the Surfliner.
They made us proud!
*#AmtrakF59PHIFarewell*
Thank you for *your service*
Now lets look foward to the *•NEW• Beautiful Looking Chargers!!*
Ew the siemen chargers look ugly as fuck when laced up to the Pacific Surfliner cars
They ain’t that ugly. Plus the f59phi can still be found doing service for metra and that North Carolina commuter service or some crap. Heck, they’re on the AMT in Canada
I know these trains were never the best but they shall remain a big part of my childhood as a boy who grew up in San Diego I saw these trains all the time and I will never forget them
Well, I will miss their roar once they are replaced. Great tribute video and best greetings from Croatia!
Thank you F59PHI #456 and your sisters for entertaining me and friends. You’ve done your job for us, now it is your time to shine in another place. Hope to see you and your sisters in Chicago some day, you will love on amongst the other F59s for your service. May your triumphant horn roar for years to come!
You know when we were young we would always talk crap about these locomotives, but through it all, I really will miss them. It sucks 453 was one of the first to go. My childhood into adulthood was with these engines and it's sad to watch them fade out. Thanks for the video Mike. It reminds me of the good old days (when I didn't have to pay for crap.)
The least they could have done is build the chargers a bit taller to fit the double decker car size, for aesthetic purposes, thats why the F59PHIs were perfect, they made the entire train look like one sleek bullet. Now the only F59PHIs in san diego are 3001 and 3002
Well, the Surfliner Chargers have a spoiler on the back (which the Midwest and MRR ones do not) to make them look more appropriate on the bi-level trains. I agree that the F59s may have looked better on them because of their size, though
I know this is an older video and the commentary, but out cruising with my son yesterday, stopped at the Elburn Metra station, and happened to catch the CNW heritage unit (which is one of these F59PHI's) and got some great photos with the car. There also happened to be another F59 in regular Metra F59 paint scheme behind it.
I’m crying! I really loved this locomotive!
I just finished watching the AEM-7 video now this😓
They were fun while they lasted. Weren’t they Mike?
@@sebastianfloyd372: The ones that went to Metra from the Surfliners and Cascades belonged to AMTK and were replaced by SC-44 chargers which were acquired by and belong to their respective agencies, Caltrans and WSDOT respectively. The F59PHIs in service with the Capitol Corridor and San Joaquins still serve because they were never owned by AMTK, but are owned by CDTX. That said, the SC-44 Chargers for both routes supplement the F59PHIs rather than supplant them.
Rest in Peace Amtrak EMD F59PHI, you did your deed, and serviced many, and lead lots of trains, and hopefully Metra will have a good use out of the F59PHI's and the other engines too, i really never got to see them in real life (unfortunately) excepting from the NCDOT F59PHI's but on other things this is a great video mike!
Thanks! The good news is that you will be able to see them running in Chicago now for a long time!
They did make us proud.
#AmtrakF59farewell
*Thanks for your high speed services on the Surfline and cascades for the past 20 years!*
We will miss those hauling F59s in SoCal right mike? They were one of the best while they lasted. But at least they won't get scrapped, instead heading to the snowy metra railways in Il Chicago. Hopefully they will get used to their new home and handle the snowy metra. I'm really going to miss these haulers especially 459, 457 and 452 (because they are my favorites) and the rest are just as good. One last message for these F59s,
Hopefully you'll be the best in the winter snowy Chicago, and Roll on F59s, Roll on!!
I’m going to Southern California next week. I really hope I see one of the last two. I most likely won’t but I guess it’s worth being optimistic about :)
@@thomaspalmer1019 someone told me 458 would leave on tuesday but he wasn't sure. I know 451 is gone
@@Railviation I am told that 458 was running in revenue service today, so 459 will be the next to leave by the looks of things right now. But we shall see.
Well it looks like 451 was the longest lasting team member. She was the first to come, along side 450, and now one of the last few to leave. 458 & 459 didn’t come into service till a few months later.
@@zaclynchofficial8191 were all the F59s delivered in order depending on their number?
I've loved those f59's ever since I was 7, it hurts so much to see them go, it actually brings a tear to my eye😞
I had no idea they were getting rid of these! Too bad I didn't get to see any. Nice video!
They had a good run

CSX YN2 Paint Scheme
You will be missed.
I’ve seen a couple over here on Metra. They have been painting some of the Cascades into their own version of the Surfliner scheme. Instead of black paint around the windows, they painted it Blue. When I saw them on their first run, an original Surfliner (with Metra patches) was leading and a former cascades unit was trailing. Nice video!
Great compilation of the Amtrak F59PHI units!
Great Video, Mike! I will miss them for sure!
THANKS MIKE for covering our now missed F59PHi's. I like the new Siemans Chargers but I really love the F59's. They are really gonna be missed.
Another amazing video!!! I always loved Amtrak's F59PHI locomotives it's really sad to see them leave on some of Amtrak's busiest trains in the system especially along the Pacific ocean coast with the Surfliner and Cascades services....I might make a similar video about a farewell to the F59 on Amtrak as well on my channel but I don't know when yet.....But another great video with beautiful shots and horn action well done!!! :) +CoasterFan2105
I am extremely sad to say goodbye to the F59phi locomotive. It was my first ever time to see this cool locomotive but I am glad they did not cut off. But still this reminds me of my memories because when I was small I used to see there videos and I kept watching it for the whole time but it is still sad that they have turned them into Metra. The Amtrak F59phi Surfliner was my first surfliner and was also my favorite one’s more than the other ones I wish they can turn back into Amtrak. Thank you so much Mike for sharing this video, we will miss them soon.
Honestly it very sad for this type of locomotives just leave the world but we all had good years of that Amtrak surfliner. Thank you so much Mike for this video I’ll miss those locomotives
Can’t believe there gonna be gone and out of here by this month or the next but one thing is for sure their legacy will live on. One amazing video Mike! Keep it up!
We'll See Those Old Railway-Trains in Railroad-Train Heaven in the Heavens Forever. Because They will be Super Duper Extremely Missed Forever and Ever. :-(
I’ve seen F59PHI engines in 2018, they’re now gone.
SC-44 chargers are now in use for Pacific Surfliners.
I do like the charger but these locos are iconic
As someone who owns a model of an F59PHI, I will miss the units on the Surfliner. But, I also welcome the new SC-44s into service. I'm not too bummed out that they were replaced, since it's not anything new to be honest. Everything get's replaced with newer counterparts. But I am glad that they weren't simply scrapped like locomotives in the past.
Yes, it is definitely a good thing that they are being repurposed where they are needed.
I got lucky during my trip to and from Irvine. AMTK 459 powered my Surfliner train set.
At least a few were bought out by Metra. They were repainted, but not the official colors, since they were due to service. (I might have some incorrect information but this is what I thought I heard)
Mike I just enjoyed the entire 11:02 of this great we'll put together video! I am gonna miss the PHI's also man! I have also been watching them for over two decades and its sad to see them go to metra! Another great video man! :)
Chicago DESPERATELY needed newer locomotives. The F59s are a hopefully short term solution until Metra can get the funding it needs to replace and rebuild the fleet. But it's good to see them here. I know Metra will do their best to keep then running and in good working order.
Metra has been underfunded for years unfortunately and as a result, they now have one of the oldest fleets in the country. If what I hear is true, they may have even more used locomotives headed their way in just a few years.
@@CoasterFan2105 Oh yeah they definitely do. They're asking the state for around $3 billion just revamp the fleet alone. And that's not even counting the terrible shape all the lines and bridges are in. Whether or not they get that funding, I'm not entirely sure but they need it before 2020 or they'll have to cut service in order to be able run without going overbudget.
It’s only a matter of time before the government forces Metra to retire their dirty, old, loud, and fuel-hogging Screamers.
I don’t know if it is just me but I give everything a face and emotions but the f59s looked so happy working for Amtrak and Metrolink
great catches and video of these picnic surfliners and other train with these units on there last runs
The last time I rode the Surfliner was in July 2018. I went from San Diego to Oxnard and back. I rode Amtrak #777 up there, it had EMD F59PHI #456 and Cabcar #6907. I came home to San Diego 2 days later on southbound train #774. It had EMD F59PHI #462 and Cabcar #6903, Cabcar #6952 was added to our train in Los Angeles. It's hard to say but that would most likely be the last time I will ever ride a Surfliner with a EMD F59PHI 🤧RIP
Farewell Amtrak EMD F59PHI it's been nice knowing you.👋
I miss 450. Hope I can get out to Chicago to see her
Metrolink should sell old ones and if Amtrak purchase them or other company they will get huge money!
love this channel
In my eyes is not the end. These young ones will get a new home in Chicago and new tier 3 engines. What will make of this is a new start for all of us in the railroad capital where everything meets.
Simply put, a new beginning.
What's kinda crazy about what Amtrak did is that they even got rid of Amtrak Surfliner #457 (Amtrak Surfliner 10th Anniversary Unit). Now what locomotive will remember the 10th Anniversary?
Mike, I really wish u had 1 million subs, I subscribed to help u out to get 1 million subs
CoasterFan2105, I’m sorry I was late but congrats on 400k subs, you are almost half way to a million subs, good luck
RIP the Amtrak F59PHIs. I miss them so much, but like many others, I am happy they were not scrapped or gutted and turned into a cabbage unit.
These are my favorite Passenger Diesel Locomotive. I will be sad to see them go.
The F59PHI never broke down on any train I rode, and I've only been late a couple times. They had no trouble gaining time back when they were late. A powerful machine and the Chargers have even more power.
Amazing video! It will sure be missed
Amazing video. I like it!👏
Excellent rail movie! Thumbs Up Best Regards from France Bruno
At least they are being put into further service. They are just being repainted and renumbered.
The f59 in both variants are icons good thing The TRE has both
Their still going strong and i wonder what will replace them on TRE i wonder what a sc44 would look like in TRE paint
I’m going to miss this locomotive!
These are my favorite engines because there clean beautiful and shiny and i live where the Metra Trains run in Illinois and i love seeing those new Metra F159PHI's once awhile
One of the first of your videos I watched focused on the Surfliners. Got me to buy the Surfliner DLC for Train Simulator.
Whoa look at this cool light up on 459 2:09
I'm so damn depressed that they are gonna stop using these f59's, they are some of my favorite trains to ride on.
Goodbye Amtrak F59PHI trains you looked awesome back then
These locomotives the F59PHI's match well with the bi level cars but the p40s or 42s or Siemens chargers look too short with bi level cars. There horns sound awesome
Nice compilation! They're a bit closer to me now since they're in the hands of Metra!
Thanks! And at least for now, they're still in the Surfliner paint scheme!
Great compilation. It's a shame to see these go, especially since they were designed to match the trainsets. The Chargers seem a little bit off as far as matching up with the cars. Gonna miss those horns and the loud engines.
Fantastic tribute to the EMD passenger flagship. I guess this was the last 2 stroke prime mover based passenger loco to be in service in the US.
I grew up on the Surfliner F59PHi's. I caught the last one the other day and it almost made me cry. (not literally of course, just a figure of speech)
the F59PHI will remain in the history book of amtrak
Man, man, man. That train carried memories!
Super pociąg
It is a shame these locos were withdrawn, personally they were my favourite American locomotives
06:55: I got to see this very trainset when I was in Oregon back in late February. It had a Siemens SC-44 Charger pushing it from the rear, so there's a connection to home there (I live in Sacramento County).
I am sad to see these machines go. I have always loved these machines and I will miss them. These locomotives were the first engines I ever remember seeing. When I was born these locomotives were the first sound I remember hearing. Thank you Mike, will miss these monsters.
You're very welcome. Thanks for watching!
