It seems that it is almost never police work that catches killers. It's almost always the killer telling someone who turns them in or a co-conspirator who rolls on them looking for a deal.
I lived in Phx. when this started. The year before I was tentatively thinking of moving due to the crime rates. As soon as this hit the news I was packed and moved within a month. It was terrifying. I moved to a small town that's 5 hours north of Phx. and don't miss it a bit. Crime is everywhere but it was getting pretty bad over there. Thank you for covering this Matt..Great episode✌
So there were three, (ALLEGEDLY 4) serial killers active at the same time in Phoneix. Which is wild. Wait until the next Phoenix serial killing video comes out when Simon finds out that in 2015 and 2017 there were more serial shootings. The Phoenix Freeway shootings (thankfully no one died) and the Marysvale serial shooter (which didn't have as happy of an ending). There are rumors, though currently unsubstantiated, that the freeway shootings were the initial ramp for the Marysvale shooter and both were committed by the same person, but as of December 2023 there haven't been any arrests in the freeway shootings and the Marysvale shooter hasn't been conclusively tied to them.

I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and you're right in all counts. Breaking Bad was mostly shot here, Arizona is just too the west of us (their eastern border is our western one), both states are just north of the Mexican border, and ... oh I forgot what else but you're right about it. Arizona is mostly very hot because it's a landlocked desert in the southern temperate zone and shade is a precious commodity. Saguaro cacti (the big, fork-shaped cactus in cartoons of the Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote) are endemic to Arizona, and it really is a beautiful state.
I spent the night in Albuquerque driving from California to Michigan 25 years ago. We found a motel, tucked under a freeway overpass, we could sneak the cat into, and the 2 guys I was with went to find a grocery store. They were gone a long long long time. I started to wonder what I would do if they didn't return. Pre-cell phone era. No car, no money. Sirens, ambulances, going by on the freeway 2-3x an hour. I was convinced something bad had happened. They eventually returned. They were shopping in a grocery store when it was held up at gunpoint by multiple people, everyone ordered to the front of the store. 😮😂Yeah! I ❤ Albuquerque! Edit: my ex, different one, ran his dad's motel in Truth or Consequences 15-20? yrs ago. This was post Toybox Killer era, but not by much, and he was hanging out w tweakers in Elephant Butte who showed him where the torture trailer was fenced off. When he told me where he lived in NM, the Toybox Killers were the first thing i brought up. Oh, serial killer geography! I ❤ T or C!
I remember this! I was only a kid maybe 9 or 10 when this was going on and I’ll never forget how scared my older sister was to go out. We lived not far from where some of the things happened. Now that I’m an adult I’m curious to know more about that case considering I didn’t really understand the gravity of the situation
I love how Simon is always amazed at how hot it gets here in the US in summer while I'm just sitting here like "huh yeah that's about right for summer, bit warm but not bad"
12:00 New York City's reputation for danger is mostly a holdover from the 1980s, when crime there actually _was_ very common. Nowadays, the crime-rate is mostly in line with other similarly-sized cities.
4:48 I live in New Mexico but was raised in Tucson Az, and used to drive to Phoenix for concerts & shopping. Phoenix is about 1.5 hours from tucson, 4.5 hours from where I live now, and 6.5 hours from Albuquerque, for reference. So you're correct, Arizona & New Mexico are next to each other, & the cities are almost 7 hours away by car. Tucson & Phoenix are both organized in a grid. Makes it super easy to find your way around. It's super hot, Tucson would get 105° or 107° on bad days, Phoenix is even hotter. It's been 115°-120° before. It's hell lol. In Tucson as a kid, I fried an egg right on the road, that's how freaking hot it is. 💜 10:07 eta: I'm loving your dive into Phoenix because Tucson is where I grew up and I was just in Phoenix last year for a concert 😊 17:45 idk if you know this but there's a lot of large suburbs outside of Phoenix, that basically became their own towns, but they're right up against one another. So Tempe that you mentioned, as well as Scottsdale and some other little towns right on the border of Phoenix began as suburbs. I wonder if that's why it was harder for authorities to tie the crimes together? Hm. 40:13 Arizona is an open carry state, you're correct. Btw, idk if you've heard of the crazy sheriff of Maricopa county, (the county that Phoenix is in ), Joe Arpiao. He made national news here in America for treating his prisoners poorly. It gets 120° degrees in Phoenix sometimes. Regardless it's very hot. The sheriff created a "tent city" for prisoners within the prison. They had to live in the tents w/o ac, wear pink jumpsuits, and he fed them peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Just a not so fun fact since this story happened in his city
That crazy sheriff was elected over and over and over again so I guess some people didn't find him so embarrassing. His treatment of inmates was unconventional but not abusive.
The sad thing is, I was born and raised here in AZ, and I didn't find out until I graduated high school that Arizona Tea is made in New York. Also, Summers in Phoenix are closer to 120 degrees Fahrenheit with all that cement and concrete. I miss 105 summers
Not sure if it'd be fodder for the casual criminalist or decoding the unknown but I think a compilation episode of all the serial killers that are believed to be currently active in the US or US & Canada would be a great topic for a video! You wouldn't need to go into a great amount of detail on each as I'm assuming there isn't much out there on each one but it'd be very interesting to see.
Fun fact about Phoenix: it's one of the few really big cities that was planned from day one. Normally the planned city thing sprouts up as a relatively small founder community becomes big, but Phoenix....someone just saw a nice expanse of desert and said "I'm building a massive city there!" And they did. And it worked. And it's not because people were forced at gunpoint to live there or anything like the Soviet planned factory-towns. Downside, it was built from the ground up to be 100% car based, so they are possibly the most fucked when it comes to the transit-and-bike oriented urban overhauls that the Netherlands has been so successful in popularizing. (Or maybe it's really easy to work in trams and bike routes in that kind of environment, I'm not actually an urban planner, just a person with a head for trivia, I don't know!)
Have lived in Phoenix for 30 years.... i remember this vaguely, i think i was teen when this happened.. id def be interested on this deep dive on it. I just remember folks warning young ladies not to go out after dark... this was a flashback of interesting sorts... well lets buckle up and see whats up.
I have lived in Detroit my whole 40 yrs. Our city has become a wonderful place with tons of things to do, cool fun places to see and literally thousands of restaurants to try. We were voted one of the best up and coming cities in the U.S. BTW I love all your episodes you're funny and interesting to listen to
They may have had enough for a search warrant, when they were following the shooters hunting, but they didn't have enough for an arrest. To arrest them you pretty much want to have enough to convict them, despite them having different legal thresholds of probable cause vs. All resonable doubt. I think that is to keep juors and judges happy more then anything else, so they don't walk. That said there maybe enough for investigatory detention, where you can hold somone for a period before an arrest and do that while waiting on and executing the warrant. My understanding is that in Arizona the hold is 48 hours, as it is in most states. SCOTUS set the max as 72 hours, and I believe the shortest period in the US is 24 hours, one of those is Missouri.
This episode takes place in my home town, and I have to say this basically EVERY TIME Simon mentions the great state of Arizona. Arizona Iced Tea is not manufactured nor incorporated in the state of Arizona, that's just the name, it's not from here.
I remember learning that when people were boycotting Arizona and the Arizona Iced Tea company had to come out and say “we don’t make our Tea in Arizona please don’t boycott us” 😅
Phoenix roads are set up to be idiot proof on the grid… until you hit a mountain. I live near a mountain & people always forget that my closest crossstreet doesn’t actually go through. Zoning is weird too. I live on the “poor side of the mountain” but there are super swanky houses only a block from my apartment

@@hannahp1108Often it's cops doing the SAing so I'm not surprised...
As somebody from the area who was in high school and just got my license that summer it sucked, but I looking forward to your take on it. And your correct Arizona right in-between California and New Mexico.
As Im from Phoenix and a girl I grew up with was one of the victims of the serial shooters I was very hesitant to watch this. But as always you do justice in honoring the victims over the cowards who ended their lives. Thank you

Oh Simon… the map adventures were in fact NOT dull for Americans. I was laughing my ass off the whole time 😂
Born and raised in Phoenix and bought a gun seriously because of this guy.
Same. Almost everyone I knew that could buy one did.
You must have moved all the way to the northern border of Utah because that's about as far as you can go to actually be 5hrs of trip.
@@shamrock5725 yes... about an hour from Kanab Utah 👌
The west side is so much more interesting than here on the east side. East Mesa! Yeah, those where crazy times.
Yup I was gonna say there was more!
It’s Maryvale, my man. An ex of mine lives there. Lol.
do you mean Scaryvale ?😂
Lived in Phoenix all my life, this was genuinely a scary summer! Btw, Arizona iced tea is made in New Jersey for some reason lol
Is it New Jersey or New York? I thought it was New York
But yeah been in Az my whole life and i cant count the times someone has told me how great our Arizona Ice tea is
It's also not been a dollar in years lmao
Oooo! In my backyard! I remember this! I remember being careful not to hang out in my car in the driveway when I got home to continue listening to NPR or whatever. (My car was my recluse from work and home responsibilities.)
Multiple jurisdictions on baseline rd. Lived there during that time. 2 of the serial shootings were within 2 miles. People were so scared to even walk their dogs at night.
Well they probably were already scared to walk the dogs because of the other guys who targeted people dogs and killed a man in his dog when there are on a walk
I love that Simon think AriZona iced tea is actually from Arizona.
i like that american think canadian bacon and chinese food are from canada and china.
@@emmanuelbeaucage4461 I like how some people like to make generalizations while having no clue what they’re talking about.
If you read the can, they're made in New York.
@@emmanuelbeaucage4461 peameal bacon or what you're calling Canadian bacon was made in Canada lmao. William Davies in 1854. Sure he was an English immigrant but it was developed in Toronto
@@emmanuelbeaucage4461Chinese Food is, objectively, from China. Whether or not Chinese food in America is authentic doesn't change that Chinese food is from China.
Once again...love how the derpy music kicks in when Simon goes on a tangent.
You should cover the beltway/DC sniper. I was pulling into the Ashland, VA Ponderosa as the ambulance arrived. Those guys pretty much shut down Virginia and DC.
That story is wild/fascinating. Living in VA, everyone was on alert and/or watch.
And MD. I’ll always remember indoor recess/PE in 8th grade…. That sucked.
That Ponderosa is gone, now. Rt. 54 still feels weird.
Hey Simon I'm listening from Detroit! You should cover the revitalization of the city on one of your channels! Just like any big city there are pockets of sketchy places, but it has come a long way in the recent years
Not sure if this is the right place or where else to suggest cases I would love to hear Simon cover but I'll just do it here. Personally, I would love to hear Simon cover the Jayme Closs kidnapping. These cases can be very dark and Simon clearly is effected by them at times like we all are so having one with a happy ending or as much as one can have with what she went through could be some needed uplifting for him.

I find it so cool that you can see the writer, editor and host interact with each other in these videos. Makes me feel warm fuzzies
As a lifelong resident of New Mexico, it amuses me that everything Whistle boy knows about the southwest seems to come from Breaking Bad 😂
Mat, this was another great episode. Your story telling is engaging and well paced.
As someone who regularly visits Phoenix I appreciate how you represented the city.
And I don’t think I’m the only one waiting for new content in your channel as well
Happy new year
New channel idea: Simon does American geography
Yes!!
I’d watch!
Simon plays GeoGuesser limited to the US.

Ngl I've been waiting for you to cover this case. I was born and raised just south of Baseline Rd during the time this was happening. It was definitely a weird time to be a child
7:40 YES!! Haha we love our "grid" here in Phoenix. I really appreciate the truly OCD planning that went into it because even if someone gives you an intersection you've never been to, you immediately know where it is and how you can get there
Also yes, 110+ F in summer is pretty much a given 😂
I was 17 and visiting my dad in Phoenix that summer. That shit was wild 😶
Happy New Year's, Matt. Well done on all your scripts. All of the writers for Simon are simply amazing. Its hard to choose a favorite but you are up there for sure!
Despite learning I have a terminal illness, you've made this past year interesting and entertaining. I have enjoyed cc and dtu so much. Thank you for entertaining me through some of the hardest times in my life. I wish all the writers and editors the very best life can bring yall. 🙏🏻
Much love, Jess
Prayers for you & your family Jess! Keep surrounding yourself with people & things that make you happy 🙏🙏🙏
Lol Simon being so excited about getting American geography right is hilarious and wholesome. Keep up the good work.
Guys, I've heard whispers of this story my whole life and I'm SUPER HYPED to not only learn about it finally but to see Simon's take
I'm waiting to see Simon and his team's take on things like the Columbus nightclub shooting which killed four people including former Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell, The West Memphis Three, the two men who killed Kelsey grammer's sister and two other women, Dr Satan who killed Jews in Nazi occupied France, the Hart family murders, and many more
DAMN YOU SIMON, I WANT ICE TEA BUT I REFUSE TO LEAVE MY WARM BED
I live right next to baseline road but in gilbert (Az) and not phoenix (Az). I remember when this happened though because i was home on leave from deployment. I got home to party but there was so much fear about being out and on the streets. I didnt understand everything that had been happening until much later
Me and Irish person "I live 5km from a shop, it's so remote"
American 80km from nearest shop "just round the corner"
After googling how many km are in a mile,
I can confirm. Any drive that takes less than an hour is just around the corner.

Honestly Simon’s grasp of US geography is better than most American’s.
Bet he's pretty good with apostrophes, too.
5:26 Disagree Simon! Your healthy family stories bring needed balance to these episodes. And this one is charming.
Most definitely....it's a great and heartwarming reality check, away from these awful crimes
Matt when video drops - 😊
Matt when Simon tries doxxing him mid script

As an American, Europeans being bamboozled by American geography is extremely amusing.
It’s so fascinating as an American to hear Simon’s take on American states/cities. We are in our own bubble over here 😂
I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and you're right in all counts.
I ❤ T or C!
Jen's editing is so good, you can tell she's back just by the way the episode runs!
I remember this! I was only a kid maybe 9 or 10 when this was going on and I’ll never forget how scared my older sister was to go out. We lived not far from where some of the things happened. Now that I’m an adult I’m curious to know more about that case considering I didn’t really understand the gravity of the situation
Not sure I want to revisit that period. The last victim of the Serial Shooters lived in the next neighborhood over from me in Mesa.
Tha k you Mathhew for the story you had me hooked straight away ❤
I love how Simon is always amazed at how hot it gets here in the US in summer while I'm just sitting here like "huh yeah that's about right for summer, bit warm but not bad"
As someone from Phoenix, I can't handle the weather under 50 degrees
I know this story. No killed kids. Simon should be fine. ❤
ETA: Wait, did Matt write it? Nevermind, Simon is toast. 😂
2006 my family and I were living 2 blocks south of baseline in Tempe. Little bit of a tense time, but nothing too insane.
Simon's America facts/guesses are such a highlight to enjoy!
Thanks For all the hardwork! Wish all the team a happy new year❤❤❤❤
12:00 New York City's reputation for danger is mostly a holdover from the 1980s, when crime there actually _was_ very common. Nowadays, the crime-rate is mostly in line with other similarly-sized cities.
The tangents are a lot less fun when Simon starts Sssniperwolfing his writers.
10:07 eta: I'm loving your dive into Phoenix because Tucson is where I grew up and I was just in Phoenix last year for a concert 😊
17:45 idk if you know this but there's a lot of large suburbs outside of Phoenix, that basically became their own towns, but they're right up against one another.
They had to live in the tents
w/o ac, wear pink jumpsuits, and he fed them peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Just a not so fun fact since this story happened in his city
@pslinky, I think everyone here, regardless of party, is trying their best to forget Joe ever took office lol.
That crazy sheriff was elected over and over and over again so I guess some people didn't find him so embarrassing. His treatment of inmates was unconventional but not abusive.
AriZona Iced tea appears to be an east coast product with it's relationship to the state of Arizona starting and ending with the name.
The sad thing is, I was born and raised here in AZ, and I didn't find out until I graduated high school that Arizona Tea is made in New York. Also, Summers in Phoenix are closer to 120 degrees Fahrenheit with all that cement and concrete. I miss 105 summers
Oh shit, finally one about my home town! I remember these crimes
OOoo the amount of shivers I got seeing a new CazCrims posted like 5 mins ago... Thanks for keeping me company at work, Simon.
BTW I love all your episodes you're funny and interesting to listen to
I was caught off guard when Simon said my first and last name. I share a name with one of the victims. 😢
Thanks!
Just saying you guys are really nailing it with the intros for this channel. Looks extremely professional and hooks really well
This episode takes place in my home town, and I have to say this basically EVERY TIME Simon mentions the great state of Arizona. Arizona Iced Tea is not manufactured nor incorporated in the state of Arizona, that's just the name, it's not from here.
I remember learning that when people were boycotting Arizona and the Arizona Iced Tea company had to come out and say “we don’t make our Tea in Arizona please don’t boycott us” 😅
I was working in Phoenix and later stayed on Baseline while working in Mesa. It was kinda scary, especially weaponless.
Lmao a bad editor would have cut out Simon's geography lesson, but fortunately we get to see Factboy learning things. :3
