spindalis79 James Baskett’s performance as Uncle Remus was easily the best thing in this whole boring movie! His smile is infectious, he’s clearly the most charming character in the film, and the integration of Uncle Remus with the animals in the B’rer Patch is still impressive considering the time period.

Men with mustaches weren't allowed to work at Disneyland for decades (the Simpsons parodied this with Ned Flanders in the "Hummel" episode). and women weren't allowed to be animators in the studio for a long time too, though they were allowed to ink the pre-made drawings. Miziyaki still avoids hiring women animators outside of inking/rough story boards.

His life after Disney and his death was the most saddest story I've ever heard. He died a homeless drug addict and his body went unidentified for years and was buried in an unmarked paupers grave. We know where he's buried, but we will never know where his true resting place is. His life all went to shit after Disney fired him: drugs, jailtime, and reckless behavior. All because he hit puberty.

    • @BurnRoddy

I don't think the movie is racist, just dated. Certainly racist through today's lenses but back then it wasn't.
But that is not because of that that it is still one of my favorite movies of all time.
What I find awesome about the film is the overall good nature of it, it teaches values to children but instead of shoving them down your throat, it conveys them through the breathtaking visuals. Surely is nothing fancy by today standars with directors like Hayao Miyasaki or Isao Takahata, but for it's time is impressive, both live action and animated intertwine in a cohesive story with a basic plot yet is not just one moral of the story but plenty.
Also there's a second line of aestetic that most people don't really see at first sight, a subtle underline of sadness, as if even after slavery was abolished there's still an insurmountable issues to take care of, which was true both in the 1870s and in the 1940's when the movie was made.
So most current media could learn a thing or two about this 71 year old movie, for starters not being bland as sand papper. If you want to generate an impact on other people don't spoonfeed your crap down people's throat like CNN, Buzzfeed, MTV Decoded, etc. INVITE people to see life over a different set of lenses and CHALLENGE them to think for themselves.

The Tar-Baby comes from West African folk-lore, just like most of the other featured in Br'er Rabbit series. When African Slaves came to America, they continued to tell the same stories passed down by their ancestors, albeit changed slightly over the generations since they were never written down but recited orally from parents to children. Joel Chandler Harris (a white southerner) was one of the first to actually document and publish most of this oral folklore, albeit only for his own personal profit, and he did little to credit and reimburse the people he recorded his work from.
The Tar-Baby is racist or not based upon the context in which it is used, when referencing or retelling the original folklore it is not necessarily racist (such as when Toni Morrison used it in her novel Tar-Baby), but is so when it is used as a euphemism for an American of African descent, in the same manner that calling someone an "Eggplant" is racist, but Eggplants themselves are not inherently racist.
It is always a manner of context.

This depiction was wrong then and is wrong today. While the following does not represent The Walt Disney Company's view of today's society, this film is being presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed."
How hard would it be for Disney to place a disclaimer like that in front of the film and release it that way?

I would rebrand it from product of a racist time to a product of an overtly racist time, where the enablers are being lulled into a false sense of security that the victims are actually enjoying it. Like it or not, the sentiment is still here, it just might be more covert.
Lindsay of course was joking, but it doesn't change the fact that people still think "compared to those a-holes last month running people over and beating them, I'm much better". It depends on how bad it really it. I mean, if it is an awful piece of shit like we're being led to believe then I doubt it'll be forgotten, if it's just a crappy attempt at Oscar-bait then it may only be remembered for how long it was hidden from public viewing. Brad could review the other WWII Jerry Lewis movie, Which Way to the Front, which did get released, was crap, and no one cares about it nor remember it.

trustno173 the problem with the day the clown cried is that it tries to tackle the serious drama of Nazi concentration camps but decides to include slapstick humor. I think the thing to remember is that Walt Disney really did make all of his "history" stories through "rose colored glasses." Look at "The Happiest Millioniare" with its song to the wonders of Detroit and "So Dear To My Heart" or "The One and Only Genuine Family Band" with their take on the turn of the century. I will grant you that he missed the point with this one, but it wasn't meant to be vindictive.

Funny story about Splash Mountain. Around the early 2000's I took a band trip to Disney World. Well on the Splash Mountain ride I brought a disposable camera with me. During the ride I took a few pictures and well, I stupidly set the flash on one of them. As soon as that flash went off the whole ride LITERALLY stopped (boy, I hope there weren't people near the big waterfall 😸)and the lights turned on followed by a BOOMING voice saying "PUT THE CAMERA AWAY!". All I could think for the rest of the ride was "Well, aren't we uppity for somebody monitoring a ride based off a movie Disney refuses to acknowledge 😾". Damn I need to find those pictures 😹

It's a very idyllic depiction of the South post Civil War, which isn't really racist, but it isn't really good either. It's really just a shitty setting for a kids movie that doesn't work even with all the gussying up, and it manifests in how 'off' the movie is.

Call someone a racist back then and they'd assume that you meant they'd hang out by the track all day. Not to mention, this was made in the 40's. There was WAY more offensive stuff out there.

Agreed. I mean, geez, the kid missed his dad and he was convinced enough to run away to Atlanta, but then bonds with Uncle Remus who tells him stories. That's NICE. His mother naturally doesn't understand, but even her own mother gets it. I think the reactions are realistic considering what is shown, but the ending was slightly cornball. That being said, his dad came back home and one way or another, they essentially promise they'll be there for him by sharing briefly in the stories that Uncle Remus told.

Since Disney is going through their remake phase, I have an idea of how to remake Song Of The South. It takes place during the modern day, Johnny goes see a child psychologist named Dr. Noah Matthew Remus to talk about his problems. What are little Johnny's problems? It depends on which you think a child would struggle with most. Divorced parents. Dead parent(s). Abuse. What every you prefer, or want to try something new.
To help Johnny, Dr. Remus tells some stories from his own book called "The Tales of Brer Rabbit". Dr. Remus wants to publish his book, but no publishing company wants to do it. Now if he's going to tell the stories, it would be nice if Disney would show the old Brer Rabbit animations from Song Of The South. Granted, they may have to edit out James Baskett, and replace him with the new actor to play Uncle Remus.
So after a few stories and events, Johnny was getting better, and his family are doing fine. Just then, Dr. Remus dies of cancer. This will be the saddest part of the movie. Later, Dr. Remus's nephew, James Remus comes to visit Johnny. He gave him a copy of the Tales of Brer Rabbit book as a present. At school during show and tell, Johnny reads the book to his class. His teacher loves the book, and so do the other teachers of the school. Because the book was becoming popular around town, the people made a petition to get Dr. Remus's book published. In fact, it did. The book became the best seller. The best kids book of the year. It even won some awards. So in the end, Johnny made Remus's dreams come true.
Hows that? Think this would work?

I don't think Disney will ever, EVER do a remake of this movie without severe backlash, at least until they absolutely run out of ideas. Hell, I think they'll remake The Black Cauldron and The Great Mouse Detective before Song of the South!

This was made in 1946? The integration of animation and live action is bloody impressive! It's almost as good as its integration of white and black equal- ....yeah, I want to watch this for the technical aspects.

I really loved this movie as a kid, especially the character of uncle Remus. Honestly I wasn't aware of the racism in this story since I am German and when I watched it as a kid, I didn't even know about the slavery in South America. I still like the movie of its artistic style. Even though the racist undertones are a big problem, the movie will always have a special place in my heart

I grew up in a Christian household and my parents had a long list of movies and television shows I was not allowed to see (Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Hocus Pocus, South Park, Ren and Stimpy, In Living Color to name a few). You better believe when I left home at age 18 I had a long list of things I had to see just because no one could tell me not to. I think that's why I want so badly to see this, people say it's wrong, it's horrible, and it should be tucked away. Disney should disavow all knowledge they made it, well take my money I'm sold!

Speaking as a black person that grew up in Alabama, I can definitely see how the live action part of the movie is pretty cringeworthy and apologetic to slave-era treatment and racism in general. I'm a little more lenient on the animations and the stories because they're actual folk stories that were told by African Americans and adapted from old African stories before that, so even if the depiction may not have necessarily been the best, the details of the stories themselves wasn't white folks being offensive. I knew a bunch of Brer Rabbit stories without this movie's context (the one that comes to mind is the briar patch) just from being told them as a kid, and I do like seeing animated versions of folk tales.
I know a lot of people bring up the Tar Baby because they think it's solely a race thing, but that's not something that was created by white people. That's an actual story. It wasn't originally told to be a racist thing.
Repeating again that I am black, I am from the south. I'm not just some white dude talking out my ass. I kinda describe stuff like this using my favorite Cinema Snob quote: "it offends white people that think black people will get offended"

interestingly enough the briar rabbit characters stuck around in comic form oftentimes hanging out with the big bad wolf and three little pigs. They had their entire own country-side version of the Duckburg comics.

That's a funny thing, the answer is no. It's funny because while the Hays Code barred non-white actors from appearing in movies, it provided a great shield to animal treatment. It wasn't until its dissolution in 1968 when the office was let go and Cimino killed those horses that brought it back.
