    Wow, what a playthrough! This is probably the best one so far. You made I so fun with your little thematic comments. Keep up the great work! I do think that the developer missed a trick in not making the reputation tokens just a six sided Victorian themed die.

    As always, as close as can be with very different strategies. This wasn't on my radar at all, but my wife is a huge Downton Abbey fan and this seems like it could be a winner.

    This game seems pretty straight forward. Unfortunately, I'm 50 minutes into the video and have yet to see what happens when you pass. Seems like it would be worth discussing that at the start of the video given how long it takes to get there organically.

    I appreciate your channel so much. When games have so much going on, I struggle to read from the rule book. A quick rules video is helpful, but a full playthrough like this really helps me understand and then teach these games. Thank you so much. I played this yesterday for the first time. I liked it, but it would have been a lot faster and easier if I had watched this video first. Next time I play will be even better now that I’ve seen this

    Good playthrough! This cleared up some small question for our playgroup. The decisions were interesting. I almost always go with Village Fair planning on my first turn. Our group likes the Jane Austen closed courtship variation. No one will try to hog up a certain group of buildings. Surprised that the family that did not hire any new servants did so well. Hiring more staff is something I do on my 2nd turn. If the Brushing Room or Underbutler tiles turn up; I try to get those right away.

    Thanks for that detailed run of the game. I just got my copy and I’m looking for advice. For my first play attempt, do you suggest that I try to play it like you did, but with two players, not three or should I try the solo variant? Which is the better way to learn?
    Thanks in advance.

    The best video I found on this game! It's been sitting on my shelf of shame for a while because I thought it was a more complex game than it really is, and I didn't think my 11 year old son who has grown up without a TV would really get the theme. Turns out he had a blast pairing guests for the various events.

    Does the game include rolling dice? Or was the dice roll at the beginning just to determine the location?

    I was always put off this game because of the boring looking art work on the box and the theme wasn’t appealing but your detailed play through has changed my mind and made me want to buy the game !

  • @timdertim
    @timdertim 5 років тому

    Hey Jon, hope you are doing allright! One of the things that come to mind when I watch how the game plays is that it seems to be rather satisfying. Moving up and around the 'reputation circle' (spend some gain some) as well as getting more prestigious guests to your hand and plan, invest and tableau build to, finally, invite them later on - it's a satisfying mix, or? (Also considering a little planning for servants and various objectives to score at the end of the game, though scoring seems to be a bit random based on drawn guests and objectives.)
    I would have never thought that the theme or the art of the game would make me feel inclined to get this - but it seems to have the right balance of finding ways to make money to afford stuff and it's tight enough (and a little unpredictable) to still burn the brain a little - without being too restrictive. (It's been a topic of conversation recently - when is a game too tight with resources to be a lot of fun to plan with, and when a little too loose. Obsession seems to be in the middle of the spectrum here?). Feedback is much appreciated. Thank you so much!

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 років тому +1

      Sorry for the delay in replying to you here Tim. I found the cycle of the game satisfying, and it is certainly crunchier than it may at first appear. I was initially interested in the theme largely due to enjoying the show Downton Abbey, but without that I would likely have been coming at it from your perspective.

    Jon, thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into this video. It was absolutely fantastic. Although it was long, I did not really notice the time going by because I was very interested in what you were saying (e.g., the strategy considerations, etc.). You have a fantastic video "presence" (friendly, clear, and efficient) which makes your videos very enjoyable to watch. Keep up the great work.

    Why not used a d4 instead of a d20?

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  6 років тому

      The D20 is mostly used for the solitaire game, and I suppose it made sense to reuse it for the Charles Dickens variant instead of putting another die in the box.
