    I'm afraid I failed to overcome my hardest challenge. For my Bachelors, I had duel majors in cultural anthropology and education. My ex managed to prevent me from finishing my masters in cultural anthropology. Later, when I was doing a computer programming AA, he prevented me from finishing it. I was just not strong enough twice. Eventually, I was able to get a masters in education. I also got a divorce and major surgery halfway through that masters. My second husband asked once if I wanted a PHD. By that time, I'd had enough of school and said no thanks. I worked a few more years and retired early. I had always loved doing textile hobbies to relax. In retirement, I spent many years learning and developing skills. In 2021, I got cancer a second time. After recovering enough to be able to sit and do hand stitching, I also found youtube. My daughter was starting her engineering degree. She encouraged me to follow my curiosity about local geology. So, I started following Nick Zentner. I'm doing his Baja to BC series. You popped up in my feed. Now, I am using your channel to help me understand what confuses me. I'm starting to branch out to plate tectonics, which I have wondered about. Also want to learn more about volcanos, which have been a long passion. St. Helen's dumping ash on us settled that passion for a time. Now I am curious again. Soon, I will dig into paleoanthropolgy. That will start me back into the fields I first trained in. My biggest take and feeling of success finally is my brain beginning to work at the college level again. I'm 74 now. Rachel, please never let anything prevent your dreams. Face those reviews head on. You will in time conquer your feelings and succeed.

    It's a shame geology isn't more appreciated by incoming college students. Even as small as most geoscience departments are, I think many geo majors switch from other disciplines. Although I didn't do an exhaustive poll, more of the peers I asked had switched from another science than had started as freshman geo majors. Many were dissatisfied with the size and toxic competitiveness of the chem dept at a school with loads of pre-meds (state school of over 30,000 undergrads). I myself switched from astronomy after deciding it might be too hard as a junior transfer to catch up. Turned out it wasn't easy to catch up in geoscience either 😄 but I ended up loving it as much as I ever expected to love astronomy.

      Agreed, I am not sure what it is about geoscience, but young students often roll their eyes at it as if it is either boring or not a 'real' science, when in reality it is the most versatile one of them all and it is soooo freaking coooolll! I wish it was more appreciated by students as well. I think anybody who gives it a fair shot realizes how cool it is, but if they don't know anything about it it is easy for them to ignore. :/ However, I am confident that in the future as we combat climate change and continue exploring the geology of extraterrestrial worlds, the new generations of students will learn just how important geoscience is and give it a shot! :D

    Speaking as somebody who has been around the block, learning to take criticism is one of the hardest things anybody can do. It's right up there with learning to cope with loss, how to let things go, and even establish boundaries. All of the hardest things in life involve learning about yourself, and pushing beyond the limits you had previously established.
    I'm working to overcome agoraphobia myself. Whether I want to or not, I go for a 30-minute walk every other day, rain or shine, all by myself. It's getting easier to do that now, since it's been about 3 months since I started, so I'll have to decide what to do next. I'm leaning toward a daily walk as a natural progression. Trying to put myself back together mentally has probably been the hardest thing I've ever done, by a very wide margin. But I've gotten past 2 depressive disorders, which are officially no longer a part of my overall diagnosis, and am now working on the mittful of anxiety disorders that resulted from the depression. One step at a time...

    • @GEOGIRL
      @GEOGIRL  2 роки тому +1

      I also go on walks to calm down and just overall lower my anxiety, it does wonders just to breathe the fresh air and step away from the computer every now and then! You seem very strong to be working through all that, but it sounds like you are doing really well and you know exactly what to do to keep improving, you are right, it is just one step at a time ;)

    Another great video this time more about you! It’s great to learn more about our UA-cam Geoteacher!!
    As an undergrad, I talk to a lot of other students in connected degrees like Environmental science. I think it’s important to ensure that all students know the range of disciplines that geoscience encompasses, whether it’s “hard rock”geology or larger scale geomorphology or more intersectional work that involves multiple disciplines.
    We as a community have to do better at communicating the variety that the discipline encompasses.
    I appreciate your explication on the difficulties of academic writing and peer review. I know for a fact that everyone in academia struggles with that (based on convos I’ve had with profs).
    I think the most challenging thing so far for me in geology has been doing the related classes like physics and math. I LOVED general chemistry (hence why I’m a geochemist) but physics 🤢. Math isn’t too bad tho. But yeah next sem I’m taking structural geology. Wish me luck!🍀
    Look forward to your next video on geocareers. This will be important for us undergrads!

    • @GEOGIRL
      @GEOGIRL  3 роки тому +4

      That's me too! I love chem and bio, but physics is not my thing and math is just okay hahaha. Also, how exciting about structural geo! I am going to start making videos on that (hopefully soon)! Good luck, and if you struggle with anything in particular in that class, let me know and maybe I can make a video about it!
      Lastly, yes I am excited for the geo careers video too, but first I need to make it haha. I am trying to collect information on any and all geoscience related careers, so if you have any ideas about what you want to do or any career options you are curious about, let me know and I will add them into that video! ;) Thanks!

    Hi Rachel, Nice video. I am amazed to see how much motivated and enthusiastic you are. I am working on my PhD thesis and most difficult thing for me is staying motivated and enthusiastic. I just wonder how you and many others manage to be like that.

    • @GEOGIRL
      @GEOGIRL  3 роки тому +1

      Well, my number 1 advice for you is don't believe everything you see online and don't compare yourself to others!
      I may appear motivated and enthusiastic about my work and research (which I am most of the time), but I definitely have my moments of weakness when I feel completely unmotivated or set back and want to quit. I just don't put those moments on the internet.
      So don't compare yourself to me or others you see online because often you are not seeing the whole story.
      I think you (and all of us in grad school) just need to take it one step at a time. I get ahead of myself sometimes and become overwhelmed, but as long as you take everything one by one it becomes a lot easier to handle. Set little milestones and with every milestone you hit, celebrate, even if it's just getting through one exam, or writing just one paragraph of your thesis. And when you feel unmotivated it is okay to take a break. I struggle A LOT with giving myself time off. But if I don't, I will end up working nonstop until I breakdown and then I end up wasting more time trying to get back on track. So trust me, you are not alone. We all go through lack of motivation. Just try not to get ahead of yourself and take everything step by step, and I think you'll do great! Good luck, you got this!that you were struggling with.

    Rachel: I had to laugh about your reaction to reviews of your paper. I just acted as corresponding author on a paper by my last MS student (she was first author of course, it was her thesis) and we went around and around with the associate editor, who basically didn't know what he was talking about. I even threatened to withdraw the paper! the paper finally was sent out for re-review and the third reviewer (ever hear of the third reviewer) agreed with us and then the senior editor finally intervened and removed the associate editor and agreed to publish the paper. I am 71 years old, so this never ends! Dealing with grant proposal reviews is even worse, let me tell you!
    You are doing a wonderful job on your videos! Don't let it take too much time from your PhD research.

      @GEOGIRL  2 роки тому

      Hi Jay! I just responded to your email :)
      Thanks for the comment, I always love getting feedback from people who have experience being the corresponding author. Wow, that story sounds really difficult and tedious. I feel like I would be too scared to go against something the editor is saying but I know sometimes it must be done, I just need to build up my courage and confidence in my field. I actually just reviewed my first paper and that was quite confidence building I must say!
      Anyway, it was a happy ending to my story! We went through 2 moderate revisions, 1 minor, and the paper was published!🎉 It wasn't my first paper, but it was my first time as corresponding author, and I am so glad that it was a relatively mild experience (relative to the horror stories I have heard haha).
      Looking forward to those grant proposal reviews you mentioned ;)
      Thanks again for the comment and sharing your experience!

    Some pertinent questions:
    1. Is a Bachelor's degree in geology enough to get started in the profession, or should you really get a Masters or PhD?
    2. How do students and graduates get their first paid field experience if their college doesn't have a work/study co-op option?
    3. How necessary is it to get accredited by a geology association?
    4. What proportion of geologists end up working in natural resources, government, education, non-geological science and tech, etc.?
    5. How important is continuing education to keep your knowledge up to date?
    6. What are some of the advisable, useful skills and certificates to get that usually aren't available from geology school?

    President of an e and p company for 30 years. Sold out in 2017. Now retired.
    Many geotreks. Including ophiolites in Turkey, platform carbonates in the Alps. Turbidite fans in the Pyrenees, oil seeps in Portugal, impact breccias in Nevada and all over Scotland. Perhaps most relevant to you was a visit to the Arkaroola Geopark in Australia. This is where Sir Reggie Spriggs discovered and identified fossilized stromatolites. He also named the Ediacaran. His daughter gave me an autographed copy of her book ‘Rock Star’ about her father.
    My interests include early life forms, chemical origin, anaerobic and Archean bacteria and how bacterial evolution forces higher order life to evolve.

I have always wished that science fiction books & movies were more scientifically realistic (because I hate that so many people think aliens will all look like little green people lol), so maybe you could intertwine your knowledge of science with making really awesome creative stories that give the public a more real and exciting outlook on scientific possibilities! Even some actual scientific realities are more weird and exciting than some sci fi stories haha. I mean the fact that organisms exist on Earth that don't breathe oxygen, or survive in environments 100s of degrees hotter than humans, or that all life on earth could have come from Mars (panspermia hypothesis), or that one of Jupiter's moons could have an entire world of life living in a completely ice-sealed ocean, or that millions of years ago life on Earth was only in the oceans and there were sea scorpions the size of sharks lol! These things are incredible and yet most sci fi is always the same old, unrealistic stories that makes people think that Earth itself isn't already exciting enough!
      Anyway, sorry to rant, just a thought, haha. Good luck!

    Earth, environmental and resource sciences - great!!
    This also relates directly to atmospheric sciences, sustainability, ecology and the history and fate of civilization, including industrial civilization, which is rather important, to make a mild understatement. Included would also be evolutionary biology. It goes on and on. In the long run, industrial civilization is headed for decline, maybe even collapse, and the preservation of scientific and cultural information will become important, and not in the distant future.

    Samples from Mars will be brought back to Earth before long. Since Mars had seas, would you be qualified to examine those samples? If solar panspermia (by impactors, say) is a thing, then there could be microscopic fossil evidence or even stromatolites.

    • @GEOGIRL
      @GEOGIRL  2 роки тому

      I mean I could technically examine them and be able to tell the general setting they may have been deposited in and whether they contain visible evidence of past life, but I would need a mass spec and a lot more expertise in mars rocks to actually be able to say anything we don't already know haha!

    Everyone who has submitted a paper for review at a journal knows that they are opening their work to criticism. The critique(s) should be professional and helpful, especially if the author is just getting started in the field. If this is not the case you should contact the editor and request more professional reviewers. Just like a good journal should hold its authors to high standards, so should those authors hold the journal review process to equally high standards.

    • @GEOGIRL
      @GEOGIRL  3 роки тому +3

      I completely agree, and I did not mean to make it sound like the reviews were unprofessional, they were professional. I just get really nervous when I have to take criticism especially from scientists I look up to so much. I have heard stories of people getting mean or nasty reviews so I get nervous that I will get some like that, but so far have not received anything like that thankfully. I just need to get better at not taking constructive criticism about my work personal as if it is criticism about my abilities as a scientist. I will get better at this with time :)

    • @GEOGIRL
      @GEOGIRL  3 роки тому +1

      Well, technically geology is the study of earth so I guess earth science and geology are more or less the same. However, I like to use the term geoscience when I am referring to all the geo-sciences/disciplines within geology, such as geochemistry, geophysics, biogeochemistry, geobiology, etc. Not sure if everyone uses these terms this way, but this is how I use them haha. ;)

    • @GEOGIRL
      @GEOGIRL  2 роки тому +1

      Ooh! What a great question, but hard to answer unless I knew more about your interests and passions. I would say if you are at all passionate about teaching, go get your PhD in geochem and become a professor to teach and do research (or just a lecturer if you just want to teach, but that doesn't pay much unfortunately). Or if you don't want to teach, but you like research, get your PhD and then look for a research scientist position at a national lab type institution like PNNL, ORNL, USGS, NOAA, NASA, WHOI, etc. If you like the research side of things, you can work as a research scientist at these types of institutions, but you would also do lots of writing for grants and publications, so if you'd rather do less writing, but be in a lab setting, you can actually make quite a bit as a lab tech running samples for researchers if you gain expertise on a specific analytical instrument (e.g., Synchrotron, TEM, XPS, ICPMS/OES, etc.). OORRR, if you don't want to teach or do research, you can go into industry (oil, gas, mining, environmental, etc.), which typically only requires an MS. But I don't know as much about what those jobs entail since I don't do them. I am sure, however, they still require a bit of research, but probably also require a very specific skill set that would be dependent on which industrial job you choose. And remember that industry doesn't automatically mean bad for the planet, most oil and gas companies have renewable energy sectors that are working to implement clean energy technologies too.

    OMG just stop it. You should be open about how she is computer generated. Keep working on the Blade Runner programing like she doesn't want to know. Just like the movie we'll walk right in to it totally aware and fall so much harder.. (Actually maybe that's what this video is all about?) Anyway its not about this particular mode of presentation. Really its just a voice (that you could switch out and replace) and the bit of full screen video at the start for us to cling to in our mind. Its about the fact that our text book company is the only one who loves us and cares about us and will ever or can ever help us and teach us. You are going to be bigger than Microsoft if you are the one. Its funny because as scientific language software companies you will know exactly what high level human thinking needs to be trained for because you only ever pay for it if you have to and you don't run it as a bourgeoisie jobs project.
