Things I didn’t mention in the video: After watching this back I guess I never really said that Apartheid was not just a disaster for South Africa, but morally evil, so I’ll say it here. When I say that diversity stunted South African growth it’s basically saying “diversity is bad”, which from a North American perspective is a very controversial thing to say. But the difference between North American and African diversity is that most (about 85% willingly) North Americans either left their home or had ancestors leave their homeland to live in this new land, it was a choice. And North American society has only existed for less than 400 years, compared to African civilizations existing for 1000s. That's 1000s of years of rivalries as well as unique cultures, languages, and rituals. These groups developed naturally along geographic boundaries, like all other groups do. Then comes along a random group of outsiders who tells these different people groups they are now supposed to be part of the same nation, and I hope you can see the problem with this type of diversity as opposed to the North American kind.
Ofc, and most North American countries are fairly artificial creations too but were created specifically as a union of diversity (like how USA and Canada have states and provinces) and the ones that aren’t are fairly small anyways.

Honestly as a south african I can see why people outside south africa would think this video is very INFORMATIVE when it is shallow.Everything this guy talks about is just history that we learn in class and barely contributes to the problems we have today.The main drive in our countries fall is our corrupt government that cares more about themselves than the people.
I talked about the unrest in South Africa recently with a friend who lives there; he brought up the issue of corrupt government, neglect of governance and failure to run the state as a government should. Like you say, this video seemed very shallow; whenever I thought he was going to touch on the modern issues of the country he just leaves it at “the legacy of apartheid”.
If you wish to know more about SA have a look at how many grants are given and the whole BEE law. Then take a look at our education system. This will help you understand why our country is so corrupt and why its failing.
You definitely got your stats from a dustbin. Unemployment stats are average 54 % countrywide. Whites are forbidden jobs due to BEE ( Black economic empowerment.) There are at least 1,2 million whites who sleep outside , are unemployed and homeless. Blacks even more due to population ratio. The black youth ( 18 to 28 are 80 % unemployed including university graduates. ) The whole electricity supply system is collapsing and in some towns no water for months. All major cities central business districts have rotted out since Mandela came into power until now. Education is 2nd lowest in the world . Can you believe it that a war torn country like Somalia has better education than us. All due to corruption . All assets are already plundered and just recently they have legalized the plundering of the last one left , namely the pensions system and its going fast. Soon the elderly who suffer from malnutrition will starve to death. How about some honesty and a visit to the country before spewing such rubbish stats.

I've studied abroad in SA, and I feel this video is off in several ways. The biggest issue being downplaying the sheer corruption and incompetence of the ANC government. This is a government that decided to randomly ban alcohol while kicking off covid lockdowns, "for societal goods." The wealth inequality is also a crippling issue, but it is also not so much a literal black & white issue (anymore). The number of wealthy black SA is comparable to white SA. It is best to think of SA as a nation once divided by race, is now divided by (economic) classes. And the difference between the haves & haves nots is jarring. The upper 1/5 having a comparable living to Mediterranean Europe (Spain, Greece, Italy), while 4/5 live in apocalyptic poverty.
All the problems that were created by apartheid could’ve been mostly solved in the last 30 years but the ANCs corruption has just made the problems far far worse

I agree with all your points except for the alcohol issue. The main reason to bain alcohol is to reduce the amount of patients in hospitals that were there because of alcohol abuse (drunk driving, poisoning etc). This reduces the load on the health care system so that it can be better utillised for covid patients.
The alcohol ban wasn’t random though. Most of the crime alcohol driven and the amount of suffering and injury it causes outweighs what ever jobs that it provides.

The demographic is more or less its own thing, not a mix between others. Similar to African Americans in the USA. -Did not really touch on corruption, a major driving element in current events. The root cause of the riots last year. -Didn't mention economic flight. This is a very poorly researched video. The 3 capitals thing started with the colonial governments and has nothing to do with the natives trying to split power. I always hate these videos on African states because the research is always half *rsed.
I think you can’t blame all of the inequality on the historic oppression from whites, when the black majority government has made legislative programs to help the poor and there is still this unequal outcome you can’t just point the finger at racism a good example of this would be in Zimbabwe where mugabe seized the property of white land owners to help equalize the country put it made their economic problems worse.

Whatever the economic problems, the video is completely off. He keeps showing a language map as if people live in separate, different parts of the country. They don't. What that map doesn't show you is that in an area where a language may "dominate", that "domination" may be 40%. What the map doesn't show you is that in the *same area* the next highest language group may be 38%. But because it isn't the highest percentage the area is painted in the colour of the top percentage, giving the impression that it's mono-linguistic. E.g Cape Town: 42.6% black (mainly Xhosa), 39% Coloured (Afrikaans-speaking blacks& mixed), 16% white, 1% Indian. Now add the percentage of Afrikaans whites with Afrikaans speaking blacks and you end up with a slight Afrikaans majority and a green map, and yet from Cape to Limpopo *genetically* SA has an overwhelming African genome. This is just one example of many, in the video implying a flawed picture which vastly complicates the situation, without explicitly stating it.

As a black Congolese living in south Africa I can confirm everything is true I've seen rich black south Africans and in Johannesburg where I live there is more wealthy black south Africans more than white now.
I can see that you tried to do your best to make this video but as a South African here's what I think you got wrong in your video: First off I really don't think this country will collapse and become separate countries. An economic collapse could happen (if the current government doesn't go through with its plan to clean up the country's corruption and fiscal policies) but not a collapse of the country's government and borders. I don't know why in each of your videos you keep mentioning that the only reason why some countries exist is because of colonialism. South Africa exists today because we see each other as people of the same country regardless of ethnicity. That's why the bantu stans didn't try to become independent after apartheid. And I should also mention that countries like Australia and Canada also only exist because of colonialism. I know this might be hard for someone from a country where they make up a majority majority to understand but in Africa the concept of a country is not about being from the same ethnic group its about a shard sense of national identity. Most countries in Africa have at least 5 to 10 ethic groups living together and they're all tied together by that shared sense of national identity. The countries borders aren't nonsensical too. Multiple ethic groups can exist in one country without it being a problem. Black South Africans see themselves as on group and not as separate groups. Many people especially in big cities have family and friends who are from other ethnic groups. People generally don't care if you're not from the same ethnic group as them as long a you can speak their language. Like I said above in Africa nationality in most case is more important than ethnicity. The countries borders were formed by geographical factors. Just look a a picture of the country's rivers or ock formations and you will be able to see the country's outline on a map. And a an African ii really don't like it when people talk about African borders and put the blame all of Africa's problems on them. It is very hard if not impossible to divide Africa by ethnicity and if someone tried then Africa would become a continent of a thousand countries. Plus with globalization and migration the idea of a country being made up of a single etchings group is quickly becoming outdated. I really don't think a civil war is likely. The unrest that happened last year wasn't mostly done by zuma supporters. The people who initiated the riots were a few dozen zuma supporters but other people joined in when they saw zuma supporters hijack trucks and loot stores. The people who joined in saw an opportunity to loot for themselves. Some of the looters were just poor and trying to feed themselves while others just wanted a to get in on the action before everything was gone. Some people even took advantage of the situation and sold food once the stores were destroyed. Since then business bounced back within a month. Where I live it took 3 weeks to repair all the damage. You made another mistake by saying that most White South Africans live in the western part of the country but actually most of them live in the interior in and nearly half of them are in Gauteng. Plus I would also like to add that the country was even more divided during apartheid. The government back then was so obsessed with dividing the population that they even made sure that if you were from for the example the Zulu, Tswana or Venda you would only be allowed to live in areas with people from your own ethnic group. But these days with more free travel a lot of those places are no longer just filled with one group. The reason why South Africa has 3 capitals isn't so we don't have one group taking over. It's actually because when the country was formed in 1910 it was formed by combining 4 countries and thus the capital of each country became one capitals of South Africa. Pitermarizburg was removed as one of South Africa's capitals after a while. The difference in income and employment is also a bit misleading. Because the White middle class of South Africa is around 4 million while the black middle class is around 11 million(it should be noted that there are 45 million Black South Africans so even though there are more wealthy Black South Africans these days most of the navite African population is still poor). The difference in wealth between Black South Africans has grown over the past few years. Older generations and rural Black South Africans are not progressing as much as younger urban generations who have access to government free education and access to tenders and preferential employment laws. At around 9:20 you should have updated your map of election results. In 2021 South Africa had elections again these were Municipal elections not national elections but the anc lost its majority for the first time in history. In the 2019 elections the anc had 57% of the vote but last year they had 46% of the vote and it is clear that the public is dissatisfied with the anc's rule. Another important thing that happened during the 2021 elections was that the and lost its majority In 2 other provinces which are Gauteng (the most populated province) and KwaZulu-Natal (the second most populated province. The opposition is parties that took over the provinces are working hard to convince voters that they are better at running the country than the current government. The riots mostly affected KwaZulu-Natal and part of Johannesburg, mostly in the townships other cities in Gauteng weren't affected by the riots. While yes the country's gdp was declining over the last decade the economy actually grew faster than expected last year. And it is expected to grow at 2 to 4% this year. You're really wrong about Lesotho. The reason Lesotho still exists is because both the South African and Lesotho governments aren't interested in merging. Both governments aren't particularly interested in expanding. Plus the government of Lesotho is not very keen on the idea of losing their power to their neighbor. The monarch of Lesotho would also go from being a leader of his own country to just being another king. Here are between 8 and 10 royal families in South Africa and the Sotho royal family would be far less influential than the Zulu, Tswana or Xhosa King. With the current unemployment and economic problems we're facing right now it wouldn't make any sense to add 2 million people on top of our problems. A few people in Lesotho are also not comfortable with the idea of going from being a sovereign country where they're a majority to being part of a country where they will make up only 2 to 5% of the population where they would have less political power. The same reasons also apply to why Swaziland and Botswana still exist. The most vocal voices of Lesotho annexation are some people (on both sides) and organizations like the Free Basotho Movement which is an organization from Lesotho that advocates for annexation. They tried to hold a referendum but the government of Lesotho doesn't want that to happen. I didn't mean this comment to one off as rude or condescending but I think it would help your videos even more if you talk to the people from those counties before making your videos to get a more informed perspective on things happening in those countries.
We were actually growing economically until Zuma became president in 2009. People didn't like how boring and business focused the prior president was so they voted in a man with nothing more than a Grade 3 education.
Ppl focus on how many languages we have and not how similar they are and how most of us are multilingual so race is more important to us than tribe. South Africa will have a political n economic collapse but only that we(black SAns) are too United to start fighting for the sake of it like other African countries we understand that we're stronger and better off as one country rather than independent provinces run by monarchs hence y we have Lesotho trying to join rather than the sothos trying to break off and join a bigger Lesotho. How about you actually do some research and get it right? Port Elizabeth - wrong name. Cape Town running out of water - wrong year (only 4 years out). Your statistics - wrong percentages. I won't go into the details, but you really should do a better job as you paint so much doom and gloom about South Africa as a country, when you really have no clue about what truly goes on within the country. Afrikaans is not only spoken in the Western Cape - there are Afrikaans speakers all over the country. isiXhosa, isiZulu - might have larger communities in certain areas but you find people who are Zulu or Xhosa in many different areas throughout the country. No mention of the Malay influence, which very much can be seen in the Western Cape? You discount them and seem to think that one of the 4 racial classifications is a mix of black, white and Indian ethnicity? No mention of the "Zulu wars" where a brilliant strategist called Shaka Zulu dominated a large number of other native tribes, forcing them to flee in fear of his Zulu warriors. No mention of the concentration camps that the British attempted to use to force the Boer's to give up the fight against England. No mention that a large part of the White population were pro-Germany during the 2nd World War which caused serious rifts in the Afrikaans communities. Many South Africans speak more than one language, some are even fluent in 3 or more! Education is an issue, but not for want or lack of a majority wanting to learn, but more due to a minority who pilfer and abuse their powers to fatten their wallets (true corruption) - thus creating a more unequal / undereducated generation that enters the workforce! The recent troubles where over 300 people sadly lost their lives is known to be politically motivated, preying on the inequality of the poorer part of the country. Yes there is inequality - the country has had 28 years to move forward to attempt to rectify the wrongs of the past, but it has not been successful and it will take more time for the country to truly find it's feet. Many do their best to integrate and become a stronger and more powerful nation, but it will take time - it will take time! You fail to mention how many Zimbabweans, Mozambicans, or people from countries north of South Africa have also attempted to integrate (maybe temporarily) into the South African society, or the issues with Xenophobia, Gender based violence or other issues which would be just as relevant to mention. Civil war ? They said that would happen in the early 90's just before Madiba became the president, because they assumed the far right would mobilise the Defence Force. Did it happen? The race & financial division still exists now more than ever in reverse mode, why? The politicians become billionaires and don't maintain or build the country. The poor will stay poor as long as the politicians only look after their own pockets. Corruption is rife, crime is thriving that includes farm murders, rape, looting and killing. Very few black people are able to commercially farm, that has been tried and failed miserably. The black voter based parties have only one ideology, getting rid of the white people and take what they have, this will turn South Africa into another Zimbabwe, very quickly.
This video was informative but it’s clear that it was made without insight to some of the problems we face . I speak as a black South African man that is apart of the the upper middle class, admittedly my standing in life is not a result of my own efforts but rather my parents who are educated and overcame unfavourable odds to get to their current positions in life .I cannot speak about the past because i am apart of the born free generation but i will speak from my own experience. Like i said i speak as a member of the upper middle class but like many other black south Africans in the same standing i have relatives that are apart of the lower class and have to live and experience the failures of our country on a daily basis . Upon seeing the great disparity between the haves and the have nots in our society and in my own family one can identify key issues that have lead to some of the failures.Some of the biggest issues are an extremely corrupt government, a failing educational system and almost negligible growth in our economy . I will not go into these issues as others have already posted comments with sound analysis of the situation but i will speak about the one thing this video fails to acknowledge and that is the nature of the people that live in the rainbow nation which is among some of the most diverse groups of people on the planet yet we have a common voice and it says that we want change and improvement for the all South Africans . There are no groups that want to be isolated in their prosperity but wants growth for all . We are a country that shares a troubled yet inspiring past that illustrates our ability to come together when it means the success of our nation as a whole . We saw a glimpse of our unity when The springboks won the 2019 world cup and the country cheered in celebration for days on end , Black ,White , coloured and Asians alike.To the world it was a game but to us it was a glimpse of the joy we could share together . Our country is troubled yet the prospect of civil war is not something that any of see as a viable or effective manner in which to deal with our problems .

As a South African I agree we gonna have a rough few years but overall I'm optimistic about the medium to long term future. Two things the video misses about our geography and ethnic relations is that we have mountains and ocean to the south and sides and dessert to the north ,the interior is where the majority of ppl live. On the ethnic relations although south Africa has 11 languages we have 4 language groups and most black south Africans know 3 languages(their home language, one from the other indigenous language group and at least some English) most of the time u don't know what someones home language or tribe is unless u ask or they mostly speak their home language and most of the time ppl barely care. The collapse might still come but I don't see the country dividing on ethnic lines wat I'm more worried about is a continuing rise in nationalism and xenophobia that would make us a regional pariah. The ANC has been eating itself for a while now and shows no sign of stopping so they'll out the picture by the end of the decade either from being voted out or collapse and after that we won't have a one party dominant democracy anymore which will make it harder for future governing parties to veto corruption and bad policies like the ANC does. The short to medium term will be hell though I don't look forward to it but we have a decent pool of graduates and intellectuals with degrees from some of the best universities in the world we won't have a shortage of solid ideas to bounce back the only thing that can stand in the way of that imo is how dedicated the majority of ppl in parliament are to turn things around and we dont end up with a self destructive political system and/or ideology again.

Apartheid was horrible, and that didn't destroy South Africa. I agree with you that many intelligent people can fix this problem. A robust democratic system filled with many parties could solve the current one-party government regression.
Pretty biased at best. You may need to add that today South African legislation is very much racially driven in a bid to protect the majority against minorities. Parliament even adopted a motion to take property without any compensation - very much along racial lines. Google is your friend, but then, your omissions do seem to be intentional.
There is so much wrong with this video which could have been avoided if you did some real research, this video is clearly from the perspective of a foreigner(nothing inherently wrong with this if done correctly). It would have been a good idea to get some opinions form actual South Africans because it sounds like you're just reading from Wikipedia pages. @@jacopofolin6400 I'm South African so I feel like my opinion has some weight Firstly he doesn't mention it directly but through the statistics he provides it makes it seem like white people own the majority of the wealth. As of 2010, maybe 2015 I don't believe this is the case anymore. To add to this white people are literally at the bottom of the food chain when it comes to being employed, go look up BBBEE reaffirmative action, on paper it seems like a good idea but all that it's doing is causing a huge brain on the country, you never ever hear of white people getting tenders from the government, or government positions (except the western Cape). We have had severe load shedding of electricity and water in the past 5 years while also pushing up the cost of electricity which is putting huge stress on local businesses. We were given a R500 billion aid from countries around the world and not even a fraction of that money has been used on local business and citizen aid. But they do send money to Cuba to help the Cuban people with aid. We have an influx of illegal citizens from neighbouring countries every year which pushes up xenophobia, this means very violent riots which puts the whole economy on hold for like a week, up to a month. The ANC has now had close to 30 years to turn things around but the country has gone further down the drain since they took power. But the video blames that on inequality from the previous government. Public services are at an all time low, corruption is atrociously high to the point where its not if it happens but how bad is it, and we see this on all levels of government. I wouldn't say the issues in South Africa are between races as much as what they are between classes. White rich people want nothing to do with black people, rich black people want nothing to do with white or black people. Our private security makes up a bigger number then our police force and army put together. You see in my opinion this guys video is what you will read on the Internet or on paper but in reality this isn't what the problems are. Also one last thing the natural landscape doesn't really contribute to dividing as much as what money does. Gauteng has the highest population of any province yet its the smallest and that's because that's where all the money is.

Most of the facts given in the video is right, but there are some undebatable false facts given: The first is that in fact the majority of white people do live in the densely populated East. Its true that white people form a greater % of the population in the South West, but most white people live in places where a lot of black people live too, like Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal. The second is something someone else also mentioned, the 3 capitals was really a compromise between the Brits and the Afrikaans people during colonialism. Technically due to diversity, but the diversity in question has nothing to do with the majority of the population. All 3 capitals were "originally" white so diversity is a moot point there. The Cape Town draught is definitely over. Still doesn't change the fact that Apartheid was one of the cruelest crimes against humanity and created fertile soil for the problems South Africa is experiencing politically at this very moment. Politics in this country is directly due to Apartheid - You have ANC, the party most South Africans “are/were” the most comfortable with because of Nelson Mandela and all the other heroes who fought against the Apartheid struggle. ANC will never really do much to address the massive structural issues in South Africa because of the agreements that were made at CODESA which to drastically oversimplify - the outcome was basically "Hey you non-whites can have political freedom now, so long as you don't disrupt the white elite establishment like take the land back or nationalize big White businesses, in return will allow you to create BEE so you can serve our interest and also become wealthy so long as you don't try help the average non-white South African too much, sure build RDPs and Government schools but don't address the fact that the majority of them live in townships while they white counterparts live in Surbabs." - To conclude ANC will never implement structural change in this country because simply put, it's not in their white aligned interest and also they are too busy indulging in the highest level of corruption. Secondly - DA, it will never be the governing party simply because most non-whites in this country have had or know of someone older who has undergone something traumatic or painful under the Apartheid regime so the distrust among whites and non-whites is very deep and riddled with memories or stories of pain, maybe in a generation or two they will have a real shot, but even then I doubt, I have followed the party quite a lot, I must say they don't really lay out plans for true "change" in this country. Their whole campaign is centered around anti-corruption which is good but then what? What about the millions of starving South Africans - they never speak on how exactly they plan to heal the nation and make it more united but more importantly they never address the issue of economic inequality. And they want us to be a Federal State which will likely be formed on ethnic or racial lines encouraging all these regions to go all the way and spit from South Africa to become their own countries. Thirdly, we have EFF the party that speaks for the most fed up non-white South Africans, Julius Malema is speaking music in the ears of the poor and abused, he understands them and they understand him, he speaks for the marginalized group of non-white South Africans who wanted more radical action in 1994, the ones who wanted their country back and thought ANC would deliver it. He is likely going to be more and more influential as the years go by as this happens he will have more power over policies. This is somewhat concerning as he is very hostile to the white people living in South Africa and his economic policies are more left-wing involving things like nationalizing big businesses and taking back the land without compensation. If he gains power, white people must have their travel documents prepared. But again I state, he is a product of Apartheid whether it was Julius or someone else, this country had the most fertile breeding ground for a non-white and pro-non-white radical to ascend to power, there are just too many non-white South Africans with empty stomachs who would rather die “fighting” for their country rather than just die of meer starvation which is a consequence of inequality the white political elites of Apartheid left us in. The other parties are too small and are heavily regional or ethnic-based which will never be enough to gain a majority of South African voters. So I conclude by blaming the political landscape, what you are balming are the evils of the Apartheid government because our politics is a direct product of Apartheid - Hendrick Verwoerd is probably smiling in his grave right now.

But as much as the South African government can be blamed and trust me they deceive a whole lot of blame for the mess South Africa is in, we must also understand the Herculean task they had before them, they had to redesign an economy in which service delivery, quality education, and a well-trained police force only existed for about “10%” of the population in the White areas of South Africa during Apartheid. If you know a thing or two about economics you know that taking an economy designed for a few people and making it all of a sudden work for everyone is next to impossible, there weren’t and still aren’t enough resources and infrastructure that reach the poorest parts of South Africa because simply put the South African Government inherited a bad government that had virtually no policies forget about bad policies, they had no policies that helped the non-white South Africans. If you look across the world of formerly colonized nations most countries still struggle with this until today, they inherited countries that were created to serve the few but now have to serve everyone, to redesign such an economy in my humble opinion will take more than 50 years because a lot of it isn’t really dependent on policy but rather on the development of actual infrastructure and that costs a lot of money and time, and as most South Africans know the Tender-prenuer practice is also a massive obstacle in the development of the entire country as a whole, too many corrupt and overpriced tenders are wasting taxpayers money and that I cannot blame on Apartheid - it truly is the fault of those who are currently in power who choose to line their pockets instead of doing their jobs properly. But as it pertains to crime, education, healthcare to deal with these things properly we ought to just understand the design of South Africa, virtually no other places in South Africa have somewhat first world development like that which we see in Cape Town and Parts of Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Durban same with the education systems. There are very well-run government schools but shockingly they are soo few. If we want a nationwide good standard of education and healthcare, it's not really a matter of policy but a basic need to build lots of infrastructure and educate as many people as well as possible and that simply put will take 50 years maybe even a century. Think about it, it took the Apartheid government and the colonial British government before it about 50ish years to establish an economy that gave white people a fantastic quality of life pre-democracy, imagine how long it will take for this to be done for every South African? It all goes back to the bad situation the Apartheid Government left for South Africa, it truly takes a long time to rectify that system so that it truly serves everyone equally. I am not removing the blame from our current leaders as I said this process will take a long time and even longer because of the bad leadership that runs this country, but we must not overlook the fact that the task at hand is insanely difficult to achieve because of what the National Party left behind.
How is declining birthrates a bad thing? All developed countries have low birthrates, the fact that they have lowered it so greatly is a sign of their progress.
Declining birthrates are usually a sign of societal decay, and cause a collapse of labor and manpower if it dips below replacement level. A shrinking population is almost never a good thing. I don't think wealth is progress if it leads to a country shrinking into irrelevance within a generation or two.

Birthrate declines because infant mortality declines, they dont need to have as many children because they dont die as often anymore. Intense social programs and family friendly policies attempted in places within Europe have failed to make them budge much, and migration has failed as immigrant populations rapidly decline to below replacement level birth-rates as well. There's a strong cultural aspect to this, likely stemming from how crucial university has become in young adulthood- ensuring later parenthood for many. I'm a little biased since I'm half Lebanese, but I would love to see videos on Iran or Lebanon. Iran is definitely a country with a lot of eyes on it, so it would be interesting to learn about their economy, if they are becoming more poeerful, if they're forging alliances with Russia or China to combat the US, etc. Lebanon also would interest me, as its economy and infrastructure have basically collapsed, and could even be considered a failing state at this point, so understanding what led to this moment, and it's future, would be very interesting as well. Being half Russian as well, I would enjoy a video on Russia. You know, given the recent news, they'd make sense to make a video on, plus they are a major power but with some interesting features. It's economy isn't that great, and a lot of the West doesn't like it, and given their weak economy, they can't leverage them like China can, so understanding how they're still doing well, if their economy is growing, or if maybe they are allying with China to combat the US, etc. I know it's a lot, and I'm just leaving these suggestions for the sake of it, but no matter what you do, it'll be good, I've been binging your channel and have been loving it.

One of the neat little intricacies of South Africa's geography is that the Cape region is one of the few parts of Africa where a European could settle in and comfortably live in, similar enough to the climate back home that thinking of it as a second homeland was viable. This is the biggest reason why it was the colony with the most White emigration and why it's still the African country with the highest % of Whites (though that's been decreasing in recent years thanks to...a variety of reasons).

...so, no mention of the possibly 20 million illegal immigrants over the last 30 years out of a population of 58 million that affect those poverty percentages, I see. And no, the mountains were not a divide of natives and non-natives. The colonists literally ethnically cleansed a large part of the Cape in the 1700s pushing the natives into the very East into what would become the country's first native reserves.(rebranded as "homelands" in the 20th century). Over the subsequent centuries those people from the reserves (Transkei & Ciskei) were the main labour in the Cape Colony and since the second half of the 20th century are moving back in. And no the top 10% owning the capital is not all white. It's just the top 10% and the top 5% elite is roughly 50/50 racially. Unequal? Yes. But not along concrete racial lines. In fact inequality has gone up in SA since the end of Apartheid as a result of wealth growing *within* the black group.
If only you could live in Soweto for a few years. Then you would know that there will be no war here. We aren’t that naïve. The fact that we constantly act out against our government is a sign that our young democracy is strong. The people still have civil rights. Economics and history are important yes, but let us not disregard the value of the lived experience. South Africans won’t let a civil war happen.

That is not true. The same scorched earth tactic was used by the Boers and the British against numerous African polities in the areas. You can read about the burning of Ulundi, for example. Scorched earth is a very effective way to combat guerilla warfare, so it is understandable that they would implement it. The 'concentration campls' were created because they couldn't just leave women and children on the farm after they burned it down. I don't think it was ever intentionally designed to massacre women and children. That was just the unfortunate outcome. Remember that more British soldiers died to disease (the same disease that killed people in the camps) than actual fighting.

If you don't believe me, read up on the history of scorched earth tactics in general, and in SA in particular. Again, I refer you to the burning of Ulundi. It was the capital of the Zulu nation, and it was burned to the ground. These are tactics that the Boers used on their enemies too. The exception is that they would leave the women and children to their own devices afterwards.
South African here and I'd like to mention a few things. Firstly, yes I do think this country will have a civil war and collapse and yes all Apartheid did in the long run was hurt the potential of this country. However I can't stress enough the failure and ineptitude of our governing party the ANC that has been in power for nearly 30 years. Since the ANC was elected in 1994, we have a government that has only exacerbated our problems of inequality, racism and poverty by maintaining bad race-based policies, rampant corruption and inefficiency. The ANC has had nearly 30 years (more than enough time) to institute policies that promote economic growth, strong education and raise the standards of living for the poorest but have ultimately failed. The way this country is governed is a socialist regime. Entrepreneurs and businesses owners have little incentive to grow because of high tax and anti-white legislation and therefore struggle to create jobs for people. I believe that South Africa's only hope is to have a less centralised form of government and become a federation of provinces where our provinces can govern autonomously.
Exactly but I doubt we'll have a civil war for the simple fact that as things got worse we saw a faster rise in xenophobia/nationalism compared to tribalism and racism the only wild cards are Zuma riving MK if found guilty and if the Cape actually tried to succeed. But I'm hopeful for the medium to long term since the ANC is dying at a faster and faster rate and its starting to look like a multi party democracy is going to replace it which will make it harder for future governing parties to veto bad policies and corruption like the ANC does cuz they'll have to compete for our votes and loyalty.

you seem to skim a lot over the insane corruption of the current government and blame it all on apartheid. I don't think I have to be the one to tell you this, but the history and political climate of the country is A LOT more nuanced than your video explained here.
I was in SA in 2017, both in Cape Town and Jo’burg, and there are parts that are very nice and parts that are not so nice. I was there as part of a school trip that focused on ethics so Apartheid was a big topic, and we went to all of the museums while we were there and I tried to speak to as many native South Africans as I possible could. In general, people don’t have any issues with differences between one another. What I did learn about though, was the Indian Ocean and Arab slave trade, my god was that horrific. You thought the Atlantic slave trade was bad, you ain’t seen nothing. You might think that there would be some kind of taboo about talking about Apartheid, but not at all, they really don’t mind and freely answered all of my questions. They didn’t blame the average members of a group, but instead acknowledged that the problems arise from the government, something they even said persists to this day. We were fixing up a slum in Jo’Burg, and running right through the center of it was a modern railway line that was built when they hosted the World Cup. Huge football stadiums are built next to slums and are just not used anymore. And, there was a water drought in the Western Cape when I was there, well I looked into it, and turns out that water was totally misappropriated and crop yields were impacted dramatically.
While apartheid did damage South Africa's socio-economic structure, there was a good opportunity for the ANC to work extra harder to reverse the situation. Afterall, when the ANC came into power, they inherited a strong economic base and excellent infrastructure that were already built by the apartheid system. Instead of using this opportunity to build an even more stronger economy for the benefit of all, particularly the previously disadvantaged black majority, the ANC chose the path of corruption. The already established economy was squandered through corrupt activities, public officials were appointed purely on the basis of comradeship instead of qualification and suitability; mediocrity overtook meritocracy. Crime rates spiralled to unprecedented levels, illegal immigrants from other parts of the African continent flocked to South Africa in large numbers, poor service delivery by state institutions became an order of the day (public health care in South Africa is so deplorable that you are highly likely to die in a government hospital than to survive an illness or injury), Foreign investment stalled because of uncertainty created by high levels of crime and corruption in the country. A combination of all these factors worsened what was already an imbalanced socio-economic structure of South Africa. South Africa 🇿🇦 is a country highly likely to disintegrate through civil unrest because of these negative factors than to emerge into a coherent developing economy; reality is more damage has been done than good. The story of the disintegration of Yugoslavia is likely to be the story of the disintegration of South Africa. Hence, I am moving to Canada 🇨🇦 to find myself a new home and a new future for myself and my family.
As a South African, I found this very hard to watch. Not sure if the level of misinformation is intentional or a simple matter of ignorance. What's worse is that it is presented with so much confidence. Even the end of Apartheid, with tensions at the greatest heights, a Civil War never happened. The title seems like a clickbait to me. You did get the history right though. My suggestion: speak to South Africans!
There wasn't a civil war because SA was a well run country and the whites surrendered power to the black majority. The reason a civil war is talked about now is after decades of black rule SA is falling apart. Corruption, crime, grift, economic mismanagement are endemic, whites are murdered whilst politicians sing about killing whites or make threats against them. So will there be a civil war? Maybe, maybe not. Though a civil war which creates a state for white South Africans exclusively (whites would leave the rest of SA and blacks would leave that state) would be a good outcome, for whites because it would stop the murders and blacks because they would have no-one to blame (though they still would do).

None are murdered because of their race. Black politicians sing kill the farmer? Well they end up with court cases to answer to the public. Everything starts with education. Even the basics, how to grow food and feed yourself. SA fails at education, everything else is doomed to fail also. The government is only 28 years old. It is riddled with corruption. Something like arranging the country to take care of the basics, food security (a food stamp type program) and education, has so far failed. The government was handed a hot mess in 1994. But they've had 28 years to make changes. At this point the ANC has to own their mess and can't blame what happened prior to 1994 for what is happening now.
They were actually doing not so bad until Zuma came in. So the whole “ITS ALL THE FAULT OF VAN Riebeeck” rings hollow. It turns out that massive corruption and incompetence will crush anything who knew.

If you take away uninhabitable land (mountains, rivers, desert) how much land would be available for people to 'own', and with the huge population boom amongst the black population how much land do you think people will actually have? it is easy to say land must be given back but it you do the math and look at the numbers, those who want land will have to be happy with the piece that they are standing on. And I doubt that much can be done with that to generate wealth.
As a South African I can easily say this video is not very well made... As another comment put it it is simply "Shallow" and may seem solid from the outside looking in but it really doesn't reflect on what is actually going on in our country. You should have consulted several people from the country (from all around the political and cultural spectrum) to truly get a good grasp on what is truly going on in SA. To fix inequality you can’t just take from those that have and give to those that doesn’t. The long term goal should be to value other attributes over race. It's unfortunate that intelligence, intentions, morality, etc. is not as blatantly apparent as race(skin color). After watching this back I guess I never really said that Apartheid was not just a disaster for South Africa, but morally evil, so I’ll say it here.
When I say that diversity stunted South African growth it’s basically saying “diversity is bad”, which from a North American perspective is a very controversial thing to say. But the difference between North American and African diversity is that most (about 85% willingly) North Americans either left their home or had ancestors leave their homeland to live in this new land, it was a choice. And North American society has only existed for less than 400 years, compared to African civilizations existing for 1000s. That's 1000s of years of rivalries as well as unique cultures, languages, and rituals. These groups developed naturally along geographic boundaries, like all other groups do. Then comes along a random group of outsiders who tells these different people groups they are now supposed to be part of the same nation, and I hope you can see the problem with this type of diversity as opposed to the North American kind.

The news that Cape Town is "about to run out of water" is about 4 years out of date now. The water shortage ended back in 2018.
We are well into our dry summer season and dam levels for Cape Town are at 87% .

Honestly as a south african I can see why people outside south africa would think this video is very INFORMATIVE when it is shallow.Everything this guy talks about is just history that we learn in class and barely contributes to the problems we have today.The main drive in our countries fall is our corrupt government that cares more about themselves than the people.

I talked about the unrest in South Africa recently with a friend who lives there; he brought up the issue of corrupt government, neglect of governance and failure to run the state as a government should. Like you say, this video seemed very shallow; whenever I thought he was going to touch on the modern issues of the country he just leaves it at “the legacy of apartheid”.

If you wish to know more about SA have a look at how many grants are given and the whole BEE law. Then take a look at our education system. This will help you understand why our country is so corrupt and why its failing.
You definitely got your stats from a dustbin. Unemployment stats are average 54 % countrywide. Whites are forbidden jobs due to BEE ( Black economic empowerment.) There are at least 1,2 million whites who sleep outside , are unemployed and homeless. Blacks even more due to population ratio. The black youth ( 18 to 28 are 80 % unemployed including university graduates. ) The whole electricity supply system is collapsing and in some towns no water for months. All major cities central business districts have rotted out since Mandela came into power until now. Education is 2nd lowest in the world . Can you believe it that a war torn country like Somalia has better education than us. All due to corruption . All assets are already plundered and just recently they have legalized the plundering of the last one left , namely the pensions system and its going fast. Soon the elderly who suffer from malnutrition will starve to death. How about some honesty and a visit to the country before spewing such rubbish stats.

I've studied abroad in SA, and I feel this video is off in several ways.
The biggest issue being downplaying the sheer corruption and incompetence of the ANC government.
This is a government that decided to randomly ban alcohol while kicking off covid lockdowns, "for societal goods."
The wealth inequality is also a crippling issue, but it is also not so much a literal black & white issue (anymore). The number of wealthy black SA is comparable to white SA. It is best to think of SA as a nation once divided by race, is now divided by (economic) classes. And the difference between the haves & haves nots is jarring. The upper 1/5 having a comparable living to Mediterranean Europe (Spain, Greece, Italy), while 4/5 live in apocalyptic poverty.
All the problems that were created by apartheid could’ve been mostly solved in the last 30 years but the ANCs corruption has just made the problems far far worse

I agree with all your points except for the alcohol issue. The main reason to bain alcohol is to reduce the amount of patients in hospitals that were there because of alcohol abuse (drunk driving, poisoning etc). This reduces the load on the health care system so that it can be better utillised for covid patients.
The alcohol ban wasn’t random though. Most of the crime alcohol driven and the amount of suffering and injury it causes outweighs what ever jobs that it provides.

-The divisions between the populace was oversimplified massively, there are many more extremely important demographics in the country.
-The description of coloreds is also wrong. The demographic is more or less its own thing, not a mix between others. Similar to African Americans in the USA.
-Did not really touch on corruption, a major driving element in current events. The root cause of the riots last year.
-Didn't mention economic flight. Another extemely serious driving factor in current events.

He keeps showing a language map as if people live in separate, different parts of the country. They don't.
What that map doesn't show you is that in an area where a language may "dominate", that "domination" may be 40%.
What the map doesn't show you is that in the *same area* the next highest language group may be 38%.
But because it isn't the highest percentage the area is painted in the colour of the top percentage, giving the impression that it's mono-linguistic.
E.g Cape Town: 42.6% black (mainly Xhosa), 39% Coloured (Afrikaans-speaking blacks& mixed), 16% white, 1% Indian.
Now add the percentage of Afrikaans whites with Afrikaans speaking blacks and you end up with a slight Afrikaans majority and a green map, and yet from Cape to Limpopo *genetically* SA has an overwhelming African genome.
This is just one example of many, in the video implying a flawed picture which vastly complicates the situation, without explicitly stating it.
Just a correction, the percentages of the Coloured and black population must be swapped. The Coloureds are currently the majority in the city.

As a black Congolese living in south Africa I can confirm everything is true I've seen rich black south Africans and in Johannesburg where I live there is more wealthy black south Africans more than white now.
I can see that you tried to do your best to make this video but as a South African here's what I think you got wrong in your video:
First off I really don't think this country will collapse and become separate countries. An economic collapse could happen (if the current government doesn't go through with its plan to clean up the country's corruption and fiscal policies) but not a collapse of the country's government and borders.
I don't know why in each of your videos you keep mentioning that the only reason why some countries exist is because of colonialism. South Africa exists today because we see each other as people of the same country regardless of ethnicity. That's why the bantu stans didn't try to become independent after apartheid. And I should also mention that countries like Australia and Canada also only exist because of colonialism. I know this might be hard for someone from a country where they make up a majority majority to understand but in Africa the concept of a country is not about being from the same ethnic group its about a shard sense of national identity. Most countries in Africa have at least 5 to 10 ethic groups living together and they're all tied together by that shared sense of national identity.
The countries borders aren't nonsensical too. Multiple ethic groups can exist in one country without it being a problem. Black South Africans see themselves as on group and not as separate groups. Many people especially in big cities have family and friends who are from other ethnic groups. People generally don't care if you're not from the same ethnic group as them as long a you can speak their language. Like I said above in Africa nationality in most case is more important than ethnicity. The countries borders were formed by geographical factors. Just look a a picture of the country's rivers or ock formations and you will be able to see the country's outline on a map.
And a an African ii really don't like it when people talk about African borders and put the blame all of Africa's problems on them. It is very hard if not impossible to divide Africa by ethnicity and if someone tried then Africa would become a continent of a thousand countries. Plus with globalization and migration the idea of a country being made up of a single etchings group is quickly becoming outdated.
I really don't think a civil war is likely. The unrest that happened last year wasn't mostly done by zuma supporters. The people who initiated the riots were a few dozen zuma supporters but other people joined in when they saw zuma supporters hijack trucks and loot stores. The people who joined in saw an opportunity to loot for themselves. Some of the looters were just poor and trying to feed themselves while others just wanted a to get in on the action before everything was gone. Some people even took advantage of the situation and sold food once the stores were destroyed. Since then business bounced back within a month. Where I live it took 3 weeks to repair all the damage.
You made another mistake by saying that most White South Africans live in the western part of the country but actually most of them live in the interior in and nearly half of them are in Gauteng.
Plus I would also like to add that the country was even more divided during apartheid. The government back then was so obsessed with dividing the population that they even made sure that if you were from for the example the Zulu, Tswana or Venda you would only be allowed to live in areas with people from your own ethnic group. But these days with more free travel a lot of those places are no longer just filled with one group.
The reason why South Africa has 3 capitals isn't so we don't have one group taking over. It's actually because when the country was formed in 1910 it was formed by combining 4 countries and thus the capital of each country became one capitals of South Africa. Pitermarizburg was removed as one of South Africa's capitals after a while.
The difference in income and employment is also a bit misleading. Because the White middle class of South Africa is around 4 million while the black middle class is around 11 million(it should be noted that there are 45 million Black South Africans so even though there are more wealthy Black South Africans these days most of the navite African population is still poor). The difference in wealth between Black South Africans has grown over the past few years. Older generations and rural Black South Africans are not progressing as much as younger urban generations who have access to government free education and access to tenders and preferential employment laws.
At around 9:20 you should have updated your map of election results. In 2021 South Africa had elections again these were Municipal elections not national elections but the anc lost its majority for the first time in history. In the 2019 elections the anc had 57% of the vote but last year they had 46% of the vote and it is clear that the public is dissatisfied with the anc's rule. Another important thing that happened during the 2021 elections was that the and lost its majority In 2 other provinces which are Gauteng (the most populated province) and KwaZulu-Natal (the second most populated province. The opposition is parties that took over the provinces are working hard to convince voters that they are better at running the country than the current government.
The riots mostly affected KwaZulu-Natal and part of Johannesburg, mostly in the townships other cities in Gauteng weren't affected by the riots.
While yes the country's gdp was declining over the last decade the economy actually grew faster than expected last year. And it is expected to grow at 2 to 4% this year.
You're really wrong about Lesotho. The reason Lesotho still exists is because both the South African and Lesotho governments aren't interested in merging. Both governments aren't particularly interested in expanding. Plus the government of Lesotho is not very keen on the idea of losing their power to their neighbor. The monarch of Lesotho would also go from being a leader of his own country to just being another king. Here are between 8 and 10 royal families in South Africa and the Sotho royal family would be far less influential than the Zulu, Tswana or Xhosa King. With the current unemployment and economic problems we're facing right now it wouldn't make any sense to add 2 million people on top of our problems. A few people in Lesotho are also not comfortable with the idea of going from being a sovereign country where they're a majority to being part of a country where they will make up only 2 to 5% of the population where they would have less political power. The same reasons also apply to why Swaziland and Botswana still exist. The most vocal voices of Lesotho annexation are some people (on both sides) and organizations like the Free Basotho Movement which is an organization from Lesotho that advocates for annexation. They tried to hold a referendum but the government of Lesotho doesn't want that to happen.
I didn't mean this comment to one off as rude or condescending but I think it would help your videos even more if you talk to the people from those counties before making your videos to get a more informed perspective on things happening in those countries.

Afrikaans is not only spoken in the Western Cape - there are Afrikaans speakers all over the country.
isiXhosa, isiZulu - might have larger communities in certain areas but you find people who are Zulu or Xhosa in many different areas throughout the country.
No mention of the Malay influence, which very much can be seen in the Western Cape? You discount them and seem to think that one of the 4 racial classifications is a mix of black, white and Indian ethnicity?
No mention of the "Zulu wars" where a brilliant strategist called Shaka Zulu dominated a large number of other native tribes, forcing them to flee in fear of his Zulu warriors.
No mention of the concentration camps that the British attempted to use to force the Boer's to give up the fight against England.

Many South Africans speak more than one language, some are even fluent in 3 or more! Education is an issue, but not for want or lack of a majority wanting to learn, but more due to a minority who pilfer and abuse their powers to fatten their wallets (true corruption) - thus creating a more unequal / undereducated generation that enters the workforce!
The recent troubles where over 300 people sadly lost their lives is known to be politically motivated, preying on the inequality of the poorer part of the country.
Yes there is inequality - the country has had 28 years to move forward to attempt to rectify the wrongs of the past, but it has not been successful and it will take more time for the country to truly find it's feet. Many do their best to integrate and become a stronger and more powerful nation, but it will take time - it will take time!
You fail to mention how many Zimbabweans, Mozambicans, or people from countries north of South Africa have also attempted to integrate (maybe temporarily) into the South African society, or the issues with Xenophobia, Gender based violence or other issues which would be just as relevant to mention.

The race & financial division still exists now more than ever in reverse mode, why? The politicians become billionaires and don't maintain or build the country. The poor will stay poor as long as the politicians only look after their own pockets. Corruption is rife, crime is thriving that includes farm murders, rape, looting and killing. Very few black people are able to commercially farm, that has been tried and failed miserably.
The black voter based parties have only one ideology, getting rid of the white people and take what they have, this will turn South Africa into another Zimbabwe, very quickly.

This video was informative but it’s clear that it was made without insight to some of the problems we face . I speak as a black South African man that is apart of the the upper middle class, admittedly my standing in life is not a result of my own efforts but rather my parents who are educated and overcame unfavourable odds to get to their current positions in life .I cannot speak about the past because i am apart of the born free generation but i will speak from my own experience. Like i said i speak as a member of the upper middle class but like many other black south Africans in the same standing i have relatives that are apart of the lower class and have to live and experience the failures of our country on a daily basis . Upon seeing the great disparity between the haves and the have nots in our society and in my own family one can identify key issues that have lead to some of the failures.Some of the biggest issues are an extremely corrupt government, a failing educational system and almost negligible growth in our economy . I will not go into these issues as others have already posted comments with sound analysis of the situation but i will speak about the one thing this video fails to acknowledge and that is the nature of the people that live in the rainbow nation which is among some of the most diverse groups of people on the planet yet we have a common voice and it says that we want change and improvement for the all South Africans . There are no groups that want to be isolated in their prosperity but wants growth for all . We are a country that shares a troubled yet inspiring past that illustrates our ability to come together when it means the success of our nation as a whole . We saw a glimpse of our unity when The springboks won the 2019 world cup and the country cheered in celebration for days on end , Black ,White , coloured and Asians alike.To the world it was a game but to us it was a glimpse of the joy we could share together . As a South African I agree we gonna have a rough few years but overall I'm optimistic about the medium to long term future.
Two things the video misses about our geography and ethnic relations is that we have mountains and ocean to the south and sides and dessert to the north ,the interior is where the majority of ppl live. On the ethnic relations although south Africa has 11 languages we have 4 language groups and most black south Africans know 3 languages(their home language, one from the other indigenous language group and at least some English) most of the time u don't know what someones home language or tribe is unless u ask or they mostly speak their home language and most of the time ppl barely care. The ANC has been eating itself for a while now and shows no sign of stopping so they'll out the picture by the end of the decade either from being voted out or collapse and after that we won't have a one party dominant democracy anymore which will make it harder for future governing parties to veto corruption and bad policies like the ANC does.
The short to medium term will be hell though I don't look forward to it but we have a decent pool of graduates and intellectuals with degrees from some of the best universities in the world we won't have a shortage of solid ideas to bounce back the only thing that can stand in the way of that imo is how dedicated the majority of ppl in parliament are to turn things around and we dont end up with a self destructive political system and/or ideology again.

There is so much wrong with this video which could have been avoided if you did some real research, this video is clearly from the perspective of a foreigner(nothing inherently wrong with this if done correctly). It would have been a good idea to get some opinions form actual South Africans because it sounds like you're just reading from Wikipedia pages. Firstly he doesn't mention it directly but through the statistics he provides it makes it seem like white people own the majority of the wealth. As of 2010, maybe 2015 I don't believe this is the case anymore. To add to this white people are literally at the bottom of the food chain when it comes to being employed, go look up BBBEE reaffirmative action, on paper it seems like a good idea but all that it's doing is causing a huge brain on the country, you never ever hear of white people getting tenders from the government, or government positions (except the western Cape). We have had severe load shedding of electricity and water in the past 5 years while also pushing up the cost of electricity which is putting huge stress on local businesses. We were given a R500 billion aid from countries around the world and not even a fraction of that money has been used on local business and citizen aid. But they do send money to Cuba to help the Cuban people with aid.
We have an influx of illegal citizens from neighbouring countries every year which pushes up xenophobia, this means very violent riots which puts the whole economy on hold for like a week, up to a month. The ANC has now had close to 30 years to turn things around but the country has gone further down the drain since they took power. But the video blames that on inequality from the previous government.
Public services are at an all time low, corruption is atrociously high to the point where its not if it happens but how bad is it, and we see this on all levels of government. I wouldn't say the issues in South Africa are between races as much as what they are between classes. White rich people want nothing to do with black people, rich black people want nothing to do with white or black people. Our private security makes up a bigger number then our police force and army put together. You see in my opinion this guys video is what you will read on the Internet or on paper but in reality this isn't what the problems are.
Also one last thing the natural landscape doesn't really contribute to dividing as much as what money does. Gauteng has the highest population of any province yet its the smallest and that's because that's where all the money is.

Most of the facts given in the video is right, but there are some undebatable false facts given:
The first is that in fact the majority of white people do live in the densely populated East. Its true that white people form a greater % of the population in the South West, but most white people live in places where a lot of black people live too, like Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal.
The second is something someone else also mentioned, the 3 capitals was really a compromise between the Brits and the Afrikaans people during colonialism. Technically due to diversity, but the diversity in question has nothing to do with the majority of the population. All 3 capitals were "originally" white so diversity is a moot point there.
The Cape Town draught is definitely over. Climate change may mean that those problems will return, but for the moment Cape Town is not at threat of running out of water
The South African economy has not, in fact, gone backwards since the end of Apartheid. The GDP is larger, the GDP per capita is larger and the HDI is higher.
All that has happened is you have gone from white Apartheid to black Apartheid.

Politics in this country is directly due to Apartheid - You have ANC, the party most South Africans “are/were” the most comfortable with because of Nelson Mandela and all the other heroes who fought against the Apartheid struggle. ANC will never really do much to address the massive structural issues in South Africa because of the agreements that were made at CODESA which to drastically oversimplify - the outcome was basically "Hey you non-whites can have political freedom now, so long as you don't disrupt the white elite establishment like take the land back or nationalize big White businesses, in return will allow you to create BEE so you can serve our interest and also become wealthy so long as you don't try help the average non-white South African too much, sure build RDPs and Government schools but don't address the fact that the majority of them live in townships while they white counterparts live in Surbabs." - To conclude ANC will never implement structural change in this country because simply put, it's not in their white aligned interest and also they are too busy indulging in the highest level of corruption.
Secondly - DA, it will never be the governing party simply because most non-whites in this country have had or know of someone older who has undergone something traumatic or painful under the Apartheid regime so the distrust among whites and non-whites is very deep and riddled with memories or stories of pain, maybe in a generation or two they will have a real shot, but even then I doubt, I have followed the party quite a lot, I must say they don't really lay out plans for true "change" in this country. Their whole campaign is centered around anti-corruption which is good but then what? What about the millions of starving South Africans - they never speak on how exactly they plan to heal the nation and make it more united but more importantly they never address the issue of economic inequality. And they want us to be a Federal State which will likely be formed on ethnic or racial lines encouraging all these regions to go all the way and spit from South Africa to become their own countries.
Thirdly, we have EFF the party that speaks for the most fed up non-white South Africans, Julius Malema is speaking music in the ears of the poor and abused, he understands them and they understand him, he speaks for the marginalized group of non-white South Africans who wanted more radical action in 1994, the ones who wanted their country back and thought ANC would deliver it. He is likely going to be more and more influential as the years go by as this happens he will have more power over policies. This is somewhat concerning as he is very hostile to the white people living in South Africa and his economic policies are more left-wing involving things like nationalizing big businesses and taking back the land without compensation. If he gains power, white people must have their travel documents prepared. But again I state, he is a product of Apartheid whether it was Julius or someone else, this country had the most fertile breeding ground for a non-white and pro-non-white radical to ascend to power, there are just too many non-white South Africans with empty stomachs who would rather die “fighting” for their country rather than just die of meer starvation which is a consequence of inequality the white political elites of Apartheid left us in. The other parties are too small and are heavily regional or ethnic-based which will never be enough to gain a majority of South African voters. So I conclude by blaming the political landscape, what you are balming are the evils of the Apartheid government because our politics is a direct product of Apartheid - Hendrick Verwoerd is probably smiling in his grave right now.

But as much as the South African government can be blamed and trust me they deceive a whole lot of blame for the mess South Africa is in, we must also understand the Herculean task they had before them, they had to redesign an economy in which service delivery, quality education, and a well-trained police force only existed for about “10%” of the population in the White areas of South Africa during Apartheid. If you know a thing or two about economics you know that taking an economy designed for a few people and making it all of a sudden work for everyone is next to impossible, there weren’t and still aren’t enough resources and infrastructure that reach the poorest parts of South Africa because simply put the South African Government inherited a bad government that had virtually no policies forget about bad policies, they had no policies that helped the non-white South Africans. If you look across the world of formerly colonized nations most countries still struggle with this until today, they inherited countries that were created to serve the few but now have to serve everyone, to redesign such an economy in my humble opinion will take more than 50 years because a lot of it isn’t really dependent on policy but rather on the development of actual infrastructure and that costs a lot of money and time, and as most South Africans know the Tender-prenuer practice is also a massive obstacle in the development of the entire country as a whole, too many corrupt and overpriced tenders are wasting taxpayers money and that I cannot blame on Apartheid - it truly is the fault of those who are currently in power who choose to line their pockets instead of doing their jobs properly.
But as it pertains to crime, education, healthcare to deal with these things properly we ought to just understand the design of South Africa, virtually no other places in South Africa have somewhat first world development like that which we see in Cape Town and Parts of Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Durban same with the education systems. There are very well-run government schools but shockingly they are soo few. If we want a nationwide good standard of education and healthcare, it's not really a matter of policy but a basic need to build lots of infrastructure and educate as many people as well as possible and that simply put will take 50 years maybe even a century. Think about it, it took the Apartheid government and the colonial British government before it about 50ish years to establish an economy that gave white people a fantastic quality of life pre-democracy, imagine how long it will take for this to be done for every South African? It all goes back to the bad situation the Apartheid Government left for South Africa, it truly takes a long time to rectify that system so that it truly serves everyone equally. I am not removing the blame from our current leaders as I said this process will take a long time and even longer because of the bad leadership that runs this country, but we must not overlook the fact that the task at hand is insanely difficult to achieve because of what the National Party left behind.

How is declining birthrates a bad thing? All developed countries have low birthrates, the fact that they have lowered it so greatly is a sign of their progress.

Declining birthrates are usually a sign of societal decay, and cause a collapse of labor and manpower if it dips below replacement level. A shrinking population is almost never a good thing. I don't think wealth is progress if it leads to a country shrinking into irrelevance within a generation or two.

I'm a little biased since I'm half Lebanese, but I would love to see videos on Iran or Lebanon. Iran is definitely a country with a lot of eyes on it, so it would be interesting to learn about their economy, if they are becoming more poeerful, if they're forging alliances with Russia or China to combat the US, etc.
Lebanon also would interest me, as its economy and infrastructure have basically collapsed, and could even be considered a failing state at this point, so understanding what led to this moment, and it's future, would be very interesting as well.
Being half Russian as well, I would enjoy a video on Russia. You know, given the recent news, they'd make sense to make a video on, plus they are a major power but with some interesting features. It's economy isn't that great, and a lot of the West doesn't like it, and given their weak economy, they can't leverage them like China can, so understanding how they're still doing well, if their economy is growing, or if maybe they are allying with China to combat the US, etc.

One of the neat little intricacies of South Africa's geography is that the Cape region is one of the few parts of Africa where a European could settle in and comfortably live in, similar enough to the climate back home that thinking of it as a second homeland was viable. This is the biggest reason why it was the colony with the most White emigration and why it's still the African country with the highest % of Whites (though that's been decreasing in recent years thanks to...a variety of reasons).

The colonists literally ethnically cleansed a large part of the Cape in the 1700s pushing the natives into the very East into what would become the country's first native reserves.(rebranded as "homelands" in the 20th century).
Over the subsequent centuries those people from the reserves (Transkei & Ciskei) were the main labour in the Cape Colony and since the second half of the 20th century are moving back in.
And no the top 10% owning the capital is not all white. It's just the top 10% and the top 5% elite is roughly 50/50 racially.

We are a very complicated nation. That is not true. The same scorched earth tactic was used by the Boers and the British against numerous African polities in the areas. You can read about the burning of Ulundi, for example. Scorched earth is a very effective way to combat guerilla warfare, so it is understandable that they would implement it. The 'concentration campls' were created because they couldn't just leave women and children on the farm after they burned it down. I don't think it was ever intentionally designed to massacre women and children. That was just the unfortunate outcome. Remember that more British soldiers died to disease (the same disease that killed people in the camps) than actual fighting.

It was the capital of the Zulu nation, and it was burned to the ground. These are tactics that the Boers used on their enemies too. South African here and I'd like to mention a few things. Firstly, yes I do think this country will have a civil war and collapse and yes all Apartheid did in the long run was hurt the potential of this country. However I can't stress enough the failure and ineptitude of our governing party the ANC that has been in power for nearly 30 years. Since the ANC was elected in 1994, we have a government that has only exacerbated our problems of inequality, racism and poverty by maintaining bad race-based policies, rampant corruption and inefficiency. The ANC has had nearly 30 years (more than enough time) to institute policies that promote economic growth, strong education and raise the standards of living for the poorest but have ultimately failed. The way this country is governed is a socialist regime. Entrepreneurs and businesses owners have little incentive to grow because of high tax and anti-white legislation and therefore struggle to create jobs for people. I believe that South Africa's only hope is to have a less centralised form of government and become a federation of provinces where our provinces can govern autonomously.

I was in SA in 2017, both in Cape Town and Jo’burg, and there are parts that are very nice and parts that are not so nice. I was there as part of a school trip that focused on ethics so Apartheid was a big topic, and we went to all of the museums while we were there and I tried to speak to as many native South Africans as I possible could. In general, people don’t have any issues with differences between one another. What I did learn about though, was the Indian Ocean and Arab slave trade, my god was that horrific. You might think that there would be some kind of taboo about talking about Apartheid, but not at all, they really don’t mind and freely answered all of my questions. They didn’t blame the average members of a group, but instead acknowledged that the problems arise from the government, something they even said persists to this day. We were fixing up a slum in Jo’Burg, and running right through the center of it was a modern railway line that was built when they hosted the World Cup. Huge football stadiums are built next to slums and are just not used anymore. And, there was a water drought in the Western Cape when I was there, well I looked into it, and turns out that water was totally misappropriated and crop yields were impacted dramatically.
South Africa? Civil War? _noooooooo_
While apartheid did damage South Africa's socio-economic structure, there was a good opportunity for the ANC to work extra harder to reverse the situation. Afterall, when the ANC came into power, they inherited a strong economic base and excellent infrastructure that were already built by the apartheid system. Instead of using this opportunity to build an even more stronger economy for the benefit of all, particularly the previously disadvantaged black majority, the ANC chose the path of corruption. The already established economy was squandered through corrupt activities, public officials were appointed purely on the basis of comradeship instead of qualification and suitability; mediocrity overtook meritocracy. Crime rates spiralled to unprecedented levels, illegal immigrants from other parts of the African continent flocked to South Africa in large numbers, poor service delivery by state institutions became an order of the day (public health care in South Africa is so deplorable that you are highly likely to die in a government hospital than to survive an illness or injury), Foreign investment stalled because of uncertainty created by high levels of crime and corruption in the country. A combination of all these factors worsened what was already an imbalanced socio-economic structure of South Africa. South Africa 🇿🇦 is a country highly likely to disintegrate through civil unrest because of these negative factors than to emerge into a coherent developing economy; reality is more damage has been done than good. The story of the disintegration of Yugoslavia is likely to be the story of the disintegration of South Africa. Hence, I am moving to Canada 🇨🇦 to find myself a new home and a new future for myself and my family.

As a South African, I found this very hard to watch. Not sure if the level of misinformation is intentional or a simple matter of ignorance. What's worse is that it is presented with so much confidence. Even the end of Apartheid, with tensions at the greatest heights, a Civil War never happened. The title seems like a clickbait to me. You did get the history right though.
My suggestion: speak to South Africans!
There wasn't a civil war because SA was a well run country and the whites surrendered power to the black majority. The reason a civil war is talked about now is after decades of black rule SA is falling apart. Corruption, crime, grift, economic mismanagement are endemic, whites are murdered whilst politicians sing about killing whites or make threats against them. So will there be a civil war? Maybe, maybe not. Though a civil war which creates a state for white South Africans exclusively (whites would leave the rest of SA and blacks would leave that state) would be a good outcome, for whites because it would stop the murders and blacks because they would have no-one to blame (though they still would do).

Which isn’t any remarkable when the whole country is taxed but you service 10% of it. When a democratic government took over South Africa, the country was in much worse economic situation than it is today, basically, broke!
White people are murdered ? Yes. And so are blacks. None are murdered because of their race. Black politicians sing kill the farmer? Well they end up with court cases to answer to the public. White politicians ordered thousands of murders of black South Africans without worrying about consequences.
As for leaving the country, no one needs war for that to happen, anyone can pack up and leave.

Everything starts with education. Even the basics, how to grow food and feed yourself. SA fails at education, everything else is doomed to fail also.
The government is only 28 years old. It is riddled with corruption. Something like arranging the country to take care of the basics, food security (a food stamp type program) and education, has so far failed.
The government was handed a hot mess in 1994. But they've had 28 years to make changes. At this point the ANC has to own their mess and can't blame what happened prior to 1994 for what is happening now.
They were actually doing not so bad until Zuma came in. So the whole “ITS ALL THE FAULT OF VAN Riebeeck” rings hollow. It turns out that massive corruption and incompetence will crush anything who knew.

If you take away uninhabitable land (mountains, rivers, desert) how much land would be available for people to 'own', and with the huge population boom amongst the black population how much land do you think people will actually have? it is easy to say land must be given back but it you do the math and look at the numbers, those who want land will have to be happy with the piece that they are standing on. And I doubt that much can be done with that to generate wealth.

As a South African I can easily say this video is not very well made... As another comment put it it is simply "Shallow" and may seem solid from the outside looking in but it really doesn't reflect on what is actually going on in our country. You should have consulted several people from the country (from all around the political and cultural spectrum) to truly get a good grasp on what is truly going on in SA. Even though I think SA is one of the more complex countries out there in terms of current affairs, I honestly think it goes for ALL countries that you need someone (sometimes multiple people) who actually live there to consult before you can even get a basic grasp of the true situation.

To fix inequality you can’t just take from those that have and give to those that doesn’t. This will and partly already have cause a brain drain situation where educated individuals will flee the country and seek employment overseas. Why stay in a country that is hell bent on taking what you have? Rich people are leaving and rightly so.
I always hear stuff like this, but if you were allowed to amass wealth in that society but also benefitted from the inequality in that same society which is nicer way of demonstrating the act of stealing wealth which is common with today’s aristocrats. What are your alternatives? Like let people suffer more to protect the rich ultraminority, like come on? They were allowed to amass wealth in that society they should be burdened with the society’s inequities. Where do you think wealth is derived from?

@@professorx4966 It depends on where that wealth came from. If it is the result of corruption and back-room deals, then yeah, that needs direct intervention. But as to Bernhard's comment, if the aim is to fix inequality by taking from the productive members of society who have earned their wealth, they WILL flee. Or failing that, lose all incentive to continue producing.

Maybe we can start with only appointing politicians without active business interests in the country? Lawyers are designed in universities to be pedantic and confuse you with words. @@robert1529 I hear you, however I feel like that would reinforce racism and the 'us and them' mentality that is so detrimental to a society that we all live in. The long term goal should be to value other attributes over race. It's unfortunate that intelligence, intentions, morality, etc. is not as blatantly apparent as race(skin color). We stereotype when our previous experiences lead us to believe all members of 'x' skin-color exhibit the same traits.
