@@joey2729 It is too bad, that team failed themselves. I am a big local sports radio guy here in DC and listening to those guys talk about how unfocused they were that week. Joe Gibbs felt bad that he was so draconian the year before and felt like they didn't enjoy the leadup to the Super Bowl, he gave the players free hand to do what they wanted, thinking their professionalism would keep them somewhat in check. Man was he wrong. Doc Walker was telling a story that him, Russ Grimm, Joe Jacoby and John Riggins were drunk and walking back to their hotel at 6:30am on THE DAY OF THE GAME. That team was better than the Raiders but they were not prepared to play that day. Joe Gibbs NEVER made that mistake again and would push his teams HARDER during Super Bowl week and in the next two Super Bowls they BLEW out their opponents worse than they got blown out in SB18.

Actually, the Redskins were the "home team" for this game. NFC/NFL was the designated home team for all odd-numbered Super Bowls, AFC/AFL was the designated home team for all even-numbered Super Bowls.
After this game, it all went quickly downhill for poor David Woodley (Miami QB). Traded to Pittsburgh after Dan Marino arrived in Miami. He never had a starring role with the Steelers, quit football by the late 80s and was beset by alcoholism, divorce and financial woes . Died way too young at age 44 in 2003.
Poor Woodley, he actually was a pretty good quarterback even though everyone remembers him as the guy who lost Super Bowl XVII. I hope he is resting peacefully. I cry every time I think of his story. I think a couple of weeks before dying, he told his ex-wife: "If anything happens I just want you to know how sorry I am". He will never be forgotten. I will always remember him as a good quarterback!
I liked David Woodley, I wish he would have had more success, especially when he landed in Pittsburgh but it wasn’t too be for him. Very sad story, he did get Miami to a super bowl here and that’s more than most can claim! RIP
He went from the pinnacle of his sport in Jan 1983 to seeing Dan Marino fall into Dolphins lap by April of that year and lost his starting job by the 83 mid season only starting 5 games , then Traded to Pittsburgh and given no real chance in 1984 - 85 seasons to start for Pittsburgh , so he Quits Football and Turns to Alcohol to drown his pain of Rejection , Really sad how he ended up .
@@fritterfoof5146 I always remember walking out of the house one day in 1982, and hearing on the TV, "On Monday Night Football" catch David Woodley and his Miami Dolphins...' I thought "Who on earth is David Woodley? I guess the latest NFL superstar.' Never really heard much about him again. In hindsight, that guy was suffering from severe depression, I wish he had gotten professional help. Indeed, a very sad story.
Miami had been an AFL expansion team and was only in its 7th year of operation in 72. Don Shula also had a reputation of losing big games such as the 1964 NFL Championship Colts vs Browns, Super Bowl III, Colts vs Jets, and Super Bowl 6, Dolphins vs Dallas. Redskin coach George Allen was an assistant under George Halas when the Bears won the 1963 NFL Championship and already had the rep of resurrecting teams from mediocrity such as the Rams in the late 60s and the Skins in the early 70s. To get to the Super Bowl, Allens Skins had to beat the defending Super Bowl Champion Cowboys, who had dominated the Dolphins the year before. I think there may have been some lingering anti-Shula, anti-AFL bias behind the oddsmaker's thinking.
Well, at least this was the season that got the NFL to go with home field advantages starting in '73 since undefeated Miami had to travel to Pittsburgh for the AFC title.
Watched this with my mom & dad(was 15) They are gone now but I can still picture & feel the good energy & excitement with that awesome game & win! I lived in southern Maryland and the school I went to had a lot of Redskin haters and cowboy fans… so that next day on Monday, man I held my head high and just smiled at the haters and the so-called cowboy fans! Easy riders as my old friend use to call them(The ones who just root for who ever is the best at that time) and that was a lot of the cowboy fans at the school I went to 🙄🤦♂️🤣 #HTTR
I watched this game as a kid knowing all the Dolphin players names. I was a fan of Woodley and had #16 jersey I wore to school. I always remembered this game as being about Riggins. But watching it again-the Dolphins Defense played great. Woodley had a great arm, but the Skins secondary was covering really well. The Dolphins had more talent they just couldn't get going on offense. And the Defense was on the field the whole game. If you let the announcers tell the story , it sounds like the Dolphins got run over. But if that fumble was called at the end or that tipped ball was caught, it would have been a different outcome.
As a Washington fan and remembering looking at this game as a 3rd grader, I forgot how bad Woodley was as a passer, there were some very open receivers that had he made decent passes its a different ballgame.
Woodley was completing 75% his passes in the first 2 playoff games and managed the bad field well in the championship, don't sell the Redskins short they forced QBs to make mistakes and tended to shut down pretty good offenses, top scoring defense and gave up avg of 12 points in the post season
I wonder if Shula put his young speedster rookie receiver in at times could've helped Woodley at all any. I young receiver who was definitely a future Dolphins HOF'er named Mark Duper. But who knows!!! 😆
Miami had won on defense that year-specifically pass defense. It was their great misfortune to run into a power running team that was peaking at the right time. Indeed, had not this emerging strength of the Redskins not been going against Miami’s weakest point defensively. Washington doesn’t win. As it was, the unexpectedly good K/O return performance of Fulton Walker helped Miami take and keep the lead until the 4th quarter.
I was raised a Dallas Cowboy fan in in 1980 I said "I need an AFC TEAM and NFC TEAM". I liked Air Coryell but I said Denver and Washington. I also liked the 1980s New England Patriots. This game... was the 1st time I felt JOY as a football fan. The next year... like ABC Wide World of SPORTS... THIS was the JOY of VICTORY... Black Sunday and the LA Raiders we lost 38-9... it was the AGONY of DEFEAT.
This game was probably Shula's worst coaching job. He should have pulled Woodley much earlier and given Strock a chance to see what he could do. Woodley did not complete a pass in the second half.
Shula should've gone to Strock the series after Riggins go-ahead run. Right there. Also, it's amazing how Riggins fumble at 2:06:02 is never mentioned in this game. He fumbled.
Shula is always regarded as a brilliant HOF coach, but his coaching in this game was horrible. He never made any adjustments at halftime and didn't do what was needed to give his team a lift. Strock should've played the entire 4th quarter, at least.
I met Tom Owen in Dallas in the late 80s. I did not know who he was but he was quick to ask me if I wanted to see his Super Bowl ring. The guy actually has a football card when he was with the Boston Patriots. Correct me if I'm wrong. One of those lucky bench warmers who just happened to be in the right place, right time. QB #17. This game was also a pleasure to watch when players made a play and did not indulge in excessive celebrations. They did their job and returned back to the huddle. Towards the end of the game it was understandable.
Now that I watched this in the 3rd Quarter, had Bokemmer been successful with almost that interception for a defensive TD that Theismann batted away,Miami would of in my opinion won that game because they would of had the momentum. But that Riggins TD sealed Miami's fate.
Thier was alot of time left after that potential td and would have made for an intriguing comeback attempt by Washington. That is in my opinion one if the single greatest game changing plays in SB history by Joe Thiesmann
@@bearcattony00 The only way to stop Riggins on your own is the good old Rugby tackle at knee level, I got concussed a few times on the school rugby team (full back).
They could have won with Woodley but the play calling was horrible and it really put him in an impossible position. They got away from the short passes and everything he threw in the second half was 30 yards down field.
Wow. At 1:15 Woodley slightly overthrows his second pass in 3 plays. If he hits the first, the Dolphins gett a big gain and a first down, The second likely results in a touchdown which puts Washington behind by 14 and maybe gets them out of their running game. I forgot how competative the Dolphins were in this game. A little more production from Woodley could have been enough to have won this game.
The good old days of Washington football.my father worked for the Washington post, and was able to purchase season tickets through work.i was 12 years old at the time we sat in section 114.i used to be a diehard fan.today I can barely stomach how Dan Snyder has destroyed this organization.sure not the same.this brings back alot of great memories.
Not to mention caving in to a woke mob to change the team's name. "Washington Football Team." Hah! Maybe it's fitting they don't use "Redskins" any more. It would be an insult to the great teams of the past to have to share their name with such an awful franchise today.
bdog1323 Me too, if Bokamper had scored we would have won the super bowl. Shame. The Redskins had luck because they won 'cause of John Riggin's run. I was a little child and I cried as the Dolphins lost. I hope that we will be great again one day. Fins up!
@@josecarranza7555 I think that bdog123 meant the non-fumble call where the Dolphins fumbled the kickoff and the Redskins recovered for a touchdown but the call was overturned, I think. Sorry but I do not know the time stamp of the play
No mention was made during the broadcast of why Joe Washington wasn't used, I assume he aggravated an injury in the Dallas game, but Harmon filled in nicely as the second running back. I rewatched Miami's playoff games and was reminded how solid they were but they had one glaring weakness that was overlooked by pundits and oddsmakers alike, small up front weak against the run and Gibbs was willing to exploit that one first down at a time
Killer Bees were in over their heads in this matchup. They were only 24th vs. the run in '82. Woodley, for all of his horrible statistics in this game, showed he had a pretty accurate arm for deep throws. Lotta deep passes were defended well by the Redskins. But Dolphins play-calling was bereft of screens and intermediate passes it seemed like, things that would've helped a young QB like Woodley. Or they just should've gone to Strock after they fell behind and Woodley still hadn't completed a pass in the 2nd half. Shula and Dolphins had two years to fix problems on defense but they kept mostly all of their overrated, undersized defense and got shredded again two years later vs. 49ers.
They were actually 28th *per carry* against the run. If they hadn’t gone 7-2 (thus ahead on a good number of games) there is no doubt they would have finished 28th and dead last in *total* rushing yards allowed. Still they could have won because they were by far the best per pass attempt and in total passing yards allowed. They only lost because their passing game completely died in the second half and the Redskins had peaked as a running team in the ‘82 playoffs. Thus what had become their greatest strength was matched up directly in Miami’s greatest weakness.
As a Dallas fan I hated the Redskins back then. …Especially Theismann and Riggins because they had a tendency to rub it in in those years they were going up and we were going down. But I *always* respected how they played-especially Riggins. This was a great playoff run and their victory that year *well* deserved.
It was the fantasy version of super bowl 19. The real one was a one sided affair for the 49ers. The dime defense exposed Marino as a one dimensional team. 25 yards rushing
Indeed-- I would have loved to see the Lions be in it for one (even if it were scripted), instead of the same teams that already have titles; because the Lions didn't do it, this was the one I saw.
If Woodley actually would have completed even some of his passes in the second half, the Dolphins could've pulled that game out. Hell, the Dolphins were inside the Redskin 50 a bunch and they did nothing with it most of the time. Woodley was so bad in the second half that Don Shula went out and got Dan Marino in the draft that year.
Woodley was put in a bad position because the play calling was horrible especially in the second half. They got away from the short passes and using Tony Nathan out of the backfield. Plus they really should have had Dave roll out of that pocket more being a mobile QB. He could have picked up a lot of yards when they had the blitz on.
It's not as though Pettibone didn't have a game plan for that contingency, any adjustments Miami made Washington was going to counter I think it would not have been a different result, Washington dominated both lines of scrimmage in the second half Strock would not have changed that

The Dolphins drove to the Redskins 3 yard line deep in the 2nd quarter and just missed going up on Washington 14-3. But already, the Miami passing game was finished for the day. I mean to tell you, it was DONE. Shockingly, from this point on, Miami would not complete a single pass of any kind for the rest of the ENTIRE game. Not even one.
Shula had Don Strock, who played amazingly in the 81 playoffs sitting on the bench but never even glanced at him when things were falling apart in the 2nd half. He also had Mark Duper on the sideline. Why didn't Shula make any adjustments in the 2nd half? I have my theories, but you gotta admit, that's pretty strange.
@@brianstupar7433 Shula made the decision to go to Strock with 10 minutes left and a 3 point deficit, the problem was that unlike most AFC teams Washington had no stigma about being called "too conservative" and refused to give the ball back before it was too late

Riggins fumbled and the dolphins recovered on play before last touchdown...dolphins should have had ball and chance to win....remember watching with my dad...we both wanted miami to win because of don shula...
I mean, we could play the what if game but if we do that then we gotta call a flag on Miami at the end of the first half for delay of game and the what if field goal for washington comes into play. Then theres the whole issue where 99% of football fans were rooting for the Redskins because of the beyond questionable Shula call to irrigate the field before the Jets game the week before. Should have been Jets VS Redskins if we do the whole what if thing
It WAS a fumble. However, the Dolphins offense had been useless all day. Yeah, Strock had come in at that point so they might have had a shot, but it's not as if Strock was some star. He was just a better passer than Woodley, which is something you could say about a whole lot of guys.
I recall a friend of mine, and I, walk the mile in our hometown in the snow carrying quarts of Miller beer. To a friend's apartment about 8- 10 peeps we're there, all Miami fans. I said oh no Johnny riggins going to win it all! I took $20 bets with everybody. Well you know I won. There was one holdout sore loser. He waited till the last seconds ticked off the clock with the $20 in his hand at the door, when clock tick to zero, he wanted it up threw it in and slammed the door! Everybody just rolled on the floor laughing! All his buddies ribbed him through the last seconds. Really enjoyed my MILLER HIGH LIFE that afternoon and eve. Even enjoyed the walk through the snow home laughing all the way! 😂🤣😎 ❄️❄️☃️
I didn't remember the two very questionable calls that gave Washington their final score. It looked to me like Riggins fumbled before his knee was down on the play before the touchdown, then the touchdown itself being ruled good based on the old forceout rule, even though it looked to me like the throw itself took the receiver out of bounds.

@@joey2729 I wish the Dolphins would go back to their original uniforms. They were absolutely ICONIC and never should have been messed with.
My father and grandfather were at this game. Fantastic upload, as always!
Actually, the Redskins were the "home team" for this game. NFC/NFL was the designated home team for all odd-numbered Super Bowls, AFC/AFL was the designated home team for all even-numbered Super Bowls.
Which is still how it is to this day.
Ah is that how it works 👍After 43 years of watching the game, you may have thought I might have figured this out.

1:49:01.... the play.
70 chip
Oddsmakers had the Dolphins as the favorites in this game, yet "underdogs" against the Redskins in the '72 season. Go figure!
In '72 the Dolphins were undefeated and '82 the Redskins had the best record...go figure
I can't figure that out either. The undefeated '72 Dolphins were the underdogs.
Miami had been an AFL expansion team and was only in its 7th year of operation in 72. Don Shula also had a reputation of losing big games
such as the 1964 NFL Championship Colts vs Browns, Super Bowl III, Colts vs Jets, and Super Bowl 6, Dolphins vs Dallas. Redskin coach
George Allen was an assistant under George Halas when the Bears won the 1963 NFL Championship and already had the rep of resurrecting
teams from mediocrity such as the Rams in the late 60s and the Skins in the early 70s. To get to the Super Bowl, Allens Skins had to beat
the defending Super Bowl Champion Cowboys, who had dominated the Dolphins the year before.
I think there may have been some lingering anti-Shula, anti-AFL bias behind the oddsmaker's thinking.
Well, at least this was the season that got the NFL to go with home field advantages starting in '73 since undefeated Miami had to travel to Pittsburgh for the AFC title.
@@acsmooth110 Redskins plated much harder opponents.
I don’t know the touchdowns for Miami and Washington.
I watched this game as a kid knowing all the Dolphin players names. I was a fan of Woodley and had #16 jersey I wore to school. I always remembered this game as being about Riggins. But watching it again-the Dolphins
Defense played great.
I just found out Woodley was an 8th round pick. Crazy.
As a Washington fan and remembering looking at this game as a 3rd grader, I forgot how bad Woodley was as a passer, there were some very open receivers that had he made decent passes its a different ballgame.
Don Strock was sitting on the bench. Shula never put him in. He could've given the Dolphins the spark they needed.
The very next year the Dolphins drafted a guy named Dan Marino....
After Strock's legendary relief job in the playoffs one year before vs San Diego I never understood why he wasn't the starter all year long
Miami's offense made Washington's defense look like the 1985 Bears. The Jets would have matched up so much better in this game.
Shula was a great coach. Unfortunately for Shula, Gibbs was better this day.
It's not like strock did any better
Shula should've gone to Strock the series after Riggins go-ahead run. Right there. Also, it's amazing how Riggins fumble at 2:06:02 is never mentioned in this game. He fumbled.
Shula is always regarded as a brilliant HOF coach, but his coaching in this game was horrible. He never made any adjustments at halftime and didn't do what was needed to give his team a lift. Strock should've played the entire 4th quarter, at least.
Bingo!
John Riggins
HOF fullback
Most Valuable Player of SBXVII
I never knew Freeman McNeil slipped on the iconic Riggins run. Great video.
That was Don McNeal.
Still may not have stopped Riggins. He was clearly overpowered on the tackle attempt.
The nfl films explained 70 chip was designed for riggins to overpower any corner back in the NFL, with the play allowing a free man at riggins.
@@bearcattony00 The only way to stop Riggins on your own is the good old Rugby tackle at knee level, I got concussed a few times on the school rugby team (full back).
Dan Marino was a Senior at Pittsburgh in 1982, if only the Dolphins had him that year.
They could have won with Woodley but the play calling was horrible and it really put him in an impossible position. They got away from the short passes and everything he threw in the second half was 30 yards down field.
STEELERS MAKE IT TOUGH by APOLOGETIX a great football song
Wow. At 1:15 Woodley slightly overthrows his second pass in 3 plays. If he hits the first, the Dolphins gett a big gain and a first down, The second likely results
in a touchdown which puts Washington behind by 14 and maybe gets them out of their running game. I forgot how competative the Dolphins were in this game.
A little more production from Woodley could have been enough to have won this game.
Yeah, it was definitely a close game. If Shula had played Don Strock in the 2nd half, the Dolphins might have won.
This game was why Dan Marino was drafted.
I think if you ask fans to name every starting QB in super bowls, his name never gets remembered by anyone but old miami fans

Not to mention caving in to a woke mob to change the team's name. "Washington Football Team." Hah! Maybe it's fitting they don't use "Redskins" any more. It would be an insult to the great teams of the past to have to share their name with such an awful franchise today.

To this day, that almost Bokamper TD haunts me in my nightmares, so much more than that non fumble call.
Sucks being the first team in SB history to lose a game while leading entering the 4th quarter.
bdog1323 Me too, if Bokamper had scored we would have won the super bowl. Shame. The Redskins had luck because they won 'cause of John Riggin's run. I was a little child and I cried as the Dolphins lost. I hope that we will be great again one day. Fins up!

No mention was made during the broadcast of why Joe Washington wasn't used, I assume he aggravated an injury in the Dallas game, but Harmon filled in nicely as the second running back. I rewatched Miami's playoff games and was reminded how solid they were but they had one glaring weakness that was overlooked by pundits and oddsmakers alike, small up front weak against the run and Gibbs was willing to exploit that one first down at a time
Mark May didn't play either. He played the entire NFC championship game.
@@Bellthorian the advantage of building around a system rather than an individual or individuals
In my country, this aired on TV for the first time ever, the Super Bowl, on Channel 4.
49ers.
Amazing Woodley only completed 4 passes this day and Miami still had a good chance to win.
Yeah, terrible play calling by Shula and the OC and horrible decision not to put Strock in at the end.
As a Dallas fan I hated the Redskins back then. …Especially Theismann and Riggins because they had a tendency to rub it in in those years they were going up and we were going down. But I *always* respected how they played-especially Riggins. This was a great playoff run and their victory that year *well* deserved.
As a fellow Dallas fan I was of course rooting for Miami but thier offense aside from one long td pass was a complete no show in this game.
Redskins had that great offensive line
19:05 The great Dick Enberg!
Don Strock starts the second half. What happens?
A lot fewer three and outs. A more rested defense, better field position.
Is this the game where Ray Finkle missed the big kick?
lol....actually that was a take on "wide right" by Scott Norwood in SB 25 Bills/Giants
It was the fantasy version of super bowl 19. The real one was a one sided affair for the 49ers. The dime defense exposed Marino as a one dimensional team. 25 yards rushing
Here watching this classic instead of this year's rigged and scripted garbage. Gimme John Riggins anyday!
Indeed-- I would have loved to see the Lions be in it for one (even if it were scripted), instead of the same teams that already have titles; because the Lions didn't do it, this was the one I saw.
I love the parachutes. Cool to see.
Dolphins should have run some screens, draws, and rolled Woodley out. And probably should have gone to Strock much earlier
It's more like Marino dropped to 27th in the draft and Shula just coudn't belive his luck that Marino was still on the board.
Washington should borrow the " No Name " defense from the Dolphins hahahahaha
It's their entire TEAM that needs a name. "Football Team" my ass.
Dick Endberg "The winners get a purse of $36,000 each for winning the Superbowl" Wow, times have changed.
It used to be $15,000 for the winner and $7,500.00 for the loser back during Super Bowls 1, 2, and 3.
What if... Don Strock played the entire game?
The Dolphins likely would've won. Remember what Strock did against the Chargers just a year earlier?
It's not as though Pettibone didn't have a game plan for that contingency, any adjustments Miami made Washington was going to counter I think it would not have been a different result, Washington dominated both lines of scrimmage in the second half Strock would not have changed that
Miami could have won with Woodley but their play calling was horrible.

I mean to tell you, it was DONE. Shockingly, from this point on, Miami would not complete a single pass of any kind for the rest of the ENTIRE game. Not even one.
Well technically they did….just to the wrong team
Shula had Don Strock, who played amazingly in the 81 playoffs sitting on the bench but never even glanced at him when things were falling apart in the 2nd half.
