Frankly, have been to very few Khayal concerts and have been to more Dhrupad functions (I live in Seattle where Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar stayed for a few years, leaving behind a thriving Dhrupad community), and to great fortune, have very rarely seen anyone whistling or over-clapping at such a spiritual setting as a Dhrupad concert. But, I once heard a performance by the great Dhrupadiya Uday Bhawalkar, who, at one point, held Tar Saptak Sa for over a minute. Everyone started (not clapping) applauding as if he had finished the performance. You could see the embarrassment on his face. He quickly pulled his ears and had to very politely ask the audience to stop clapping. It was amazing to see that take place during the unfolding of something as serene and meditative as a recital of Dagarbani Dhrupad, but, nonetheless, it does happen sometimes. By the way, love the intro!!! 😆 That short 'Shyaam Bajaye' with the camera going crazy is gold.
haha. All three very pertinent points. Perhaps a 4th point is that nobody cares if you have the latest cellphone. An ICM concert is not the place to flash it. Keep it in flight mode OR if you're a Doctor, then silent/vibrate mode.
