Make a Drawbar from DOM Tube!

- In this week's project, we start in on making our 5C draw-tube to go along with the 5C collet adapter that we made a few videos ago.

We'll start with a piece of 1-3/8" DOM tube, cut it, bore it, and single point cut the internal thread on the manual lathe.
We will also go over some of the math required to find the nominal bore diameter of a given internal 60 degree V thread.
This can be useful when dealing with a "non standard" thread with unknown dimensions.
In the next video, we will finish up the project by casting and machining the hand wheel to fit onto the end of the draw-tube.

Thanks very much. 😁You'd be surprised how much hate I get on my videos simply because I show my hands a lot in my vids. So I thought I'd make a little joke of it. You'd also be surprised how many people didn't get the joke... ;) ToT seems to have a lot of very angry fans, most of whom, I have become convinced, don't seem to realize that just about every person on the planet is born with their very own pair of hands. 🤔

HaHa, to be fair, I think it'd be safe to say that my entire machining journey is a ToT tribute. He is responsible for me discovering machining in the first place, and remains my favorite creator. So to say that he's "influenced" me would be an understatement. I could never be as good as him, but I do REALLY appreciate the compliment, it's very encouraging to hear it! Thank You!!!

Geez.. the negative comments referring to TOT.. I believe that Tony would be honored honestly. But I see some similarities, how do you copy someone?? Just because he used some of the same editing techniques and format doesn’t necessarily mean he is copying him. He was obviously inspired by Tony, but then again who wasn’t? Tony is a trail blazing bad as- … butt. I say we cut him some slack and let him become his own. And if he doesn’t we can grab up TOT and go over there and..

Thanks man, and yeah it's a bit ridiculous. If putting 40+ hours of machining, filming, editing, and just plain hard work into a video just so that I can upload it to the internet and share it with like minded people is somehow "copying" someone, well then I'll just be over here copying people I guess... But really, the truth of the matter is that comments like those come from a very specific type of person. And honestly, comments from people like that just aren't even worth the time it takes to read them. I appreciate you, and thanks for watching.
Yeah, not a big fan of plagiarising TOT. There is only one TOT. Besides, your thumb doesn't look like my big toe so you don't have the hands for it.
I like the drawbar but why such a small diameter for the hand wheel? Assuming the collets will be tightened and loosened by hand I would want at least six inches with notches for gripping.
The diameter of the hand wheel is 4.5", which is larger than any I've ever seen/used. They average normally 3 to 3.5" in my experience. But the great thing about it is, you can make whatever size/shape you want.

I agree that the "talking hands" style of filming machining videos is overdone, and distracting. Use your hands to demonstrate, but the air gestures while narrating makes it seem like the channel is copying someone else's style. When you're just talking, why not look at the camera? It will make a better connection with the audience, which would lead to more subs
So you cut it twice and it is still too short? :)
Why not internal thread it and add an extension from your leftover stock to make room for the handle? A little thread locker and boom - like you never cut it in the first place. Plus then it is reconfigurable for the next lathe.
Like the channel so far. A little less hand waving please. It is a fine line between expressive and distracting.
That's definitely not a bad idea. Only downside to that it that you end up with a reduced bore diameter at the end of the shaft, which would affect the size of stock that could pass through it. I have a plan already that im gonna run with, some slight modifications to the hand-wheel, and how it's attached and I think it should work. And thanks very much! I'll take that feedback into account. I am nervous showing my face on the camera, and it's a lot easier for me to relax when I'm "behind" the camera just talking. But I get what you're saying, there's expressive, and then there's distracting. I am also working on getting in front of the camera at times where it makes sense, so hopefully will continue to evolve, and get better. Thanks again!
If you use the same stock you used for the tube, the ID would remain the same the whole way and you would not have to modify your clamp / bearing assembly or handle designs at all.

@@nf4x Ooooh, ok I see what you mean. Yeah that's a great solution. I'm already more hours than I'd like to admit into this so I'll steam ahead with the original plan for now. Only gotta make up maybe 3/4" on the shaft so hopefully won't be a big deal. But if something happens and I need to re-asses, that's a great plan. And thanks very much for the support! Honestly, it's a LOT of work, making this channel nights after working a full day job. But the support I'm getting really makes it all worth it, and it keeps me going when I feel like I'm running out of steam. Hoping to have part 2 out next fri morning!

It's better to be original which can be very difficult. You have all the fundamental things to create interesting content, but I personally don't like how you're copying This Old Tony
Jesus, the imp. calculation for threading is ridiculous... Metric is the diameter in mm, the depth of final cut is diameter minus the thread pitch in mm, so say m20x1 is 20mm major, 19mm thread minor, if its m12x1.75, the major is 12, the minor is 12-1.75 or 10.25mm... You just apply that in reverse for internal threads, well, not reverse, but in regards to the male thread...
It literally takes you nothing other than hearing the M(size)x(thread pitch) to be able to instantly deduce the rest... And if you want reduced thread engagement, well, just, you know, round it over in your mind and you will be okay... If you want 76% engagement on 1.75 thread, it`s easier to just go with the flow and round it over, but if its nonsense like 1mm pitch or 1*x(being a whole number) its literally 0 effort percentile calculations where you assume the 1 is 100% and just multiply the result for any whole number multiple, in accordance with the thread pitch...
Imperial system has some pros, but damn does it have its major cons with all the complexity and fractions... I use both, but i definitely appreciate metric as the superior system... It just translates into any application with ease...

Well, its hard to miss the cues given that ToT is one of the people responsible for me having machines today... I likely spent a few hundred hours watching and rewatching his videos, so sniffing his style out is kind of a reflex by now...
The same rule of thumb applies for figuring minor diameter (or tap drill diameter tor 75% threads) with imperial threads. Major diameter minus pitch. In this case, 1.238 - .050, or 1.188. Virtually the same as the more involved calculation.
