Great video, and good tips. We got a tandem for our first anniversary and are still "chained together behind bars" 38 years later. It's a blast. Most of the communication is implied, but still necessary for unexpected events. The pilot's job is to keep the stoker comfortable, with the speed, cadence, and maneuvering, and the stoker's job is to be careful to not body-steer the bike, and to let the pilot know when the power demands are too much or the cadence is too high. Shock absorbing seat post is a must! Tandem teams are rated by combined age: ours is 157.
Wow! Thank you for such good information! And I love the tandem team age factoid! Your team is amazing for reaching 157. Hopefully Vicki and I will as well :)
My wife and I have been riding tandems for over 40 years. For a beginner captain and stoker you did it right. Especially noted that the stoker always keeps their feet on the pedals until the disembark.
Thank you so much! I'm glad we were able to demonstrate somewhat right techniques despite it being our first time. Tandems are an absolute blast and I am so happy to hear you've been riding for 40 years! Hopefully Vicki and I will get to that level too!
I bought a tandem at an antique and second hand shop. It was in poor shape so I fixed and customized it. It is for my autistic grandson. He is unable to notice cars. So I am able to keep him safe. He loves to have a chance to do a regular kid thing. A bicycle may not seem like an important thing but it brings him actual joy and grandpa doesn't mind having an excuse to ride a bike. It's probably been nearly 50 years since I really had a legitimate reason to ride a bike.
@@kevindouglas2060 thank you for sharing your experience! It makes me so happy to hear you've rediscovered the joy of cycling and get to share it with your family. That is amazing.
That’s so coool guys! Yes it seems like a great relationship exercise. Kinda reminded us of couples acro yoga. You really gotta trust and communicate with each other to move and balance. Lol at Vicki’s answer 😆 And the bunny was sooooo kayoot! Glad to know he was okay after.
Thanks for watching! Yeah love riding together with my partner Vicki! We recently got an ebike with a passenger seat and it's so fun to ride around together because it's much easier to talk to each other on the ride.
We found some moths were attracted to our screen when climbing in the Glen! Must be something in it. If Laura and I went tandem, I think we would just yell at each other the whole time, haha. I also appreciate the last note about the bunny, glad he stayed put.
Lol I feel like a video of the two of you just yelling at each other on a bike would be hilarious. And yeah that bunny was so adorable. It took all our willpower to do the right thing and leave him alone rather than take him home with us to cuddle :P
It depends on how much they pedal! The front steers but could also technically not do any work and let the back do all the work so really it's up to the two people to be a team because the front or the back could technically slack off! :P
I think it can with some practice - depending on your mobility level. Your partner would be in the captain chair (up front) and you could be in the back. You would rest your feet on the pedals but you don't actually have to pedal. Now I say it would take practice because the bike can be heavy and balance is also under consideration so it'll be a little more effort for your partner to pedal both you and them, but I think it's definitely doable with some practice and patience. I would say try renting one or if you know any friends that have one, borrow just to try it out. The first hour or two will be shaky but see if you guys are able to slowly figure out what works for you and if tandems do work, then it would be a great option for you!
Great video! Makes me want to tandem ride again. I think learning any activity together is great or trying new things! Really reminds me to be patient and practice communicating. :D

Our third date, I took my wife on a tandem ride. Over twenty years later we are still in love and loving our tandem rides!!
That's beautiful! So glad you guys are still enjoying your tandem rides!!
Thanks! We will!

Outstanding video. My wife and I are renting one tomorrow and needed a little primer.
Thank you Pete! Have fun and be safe! You're going to have a great time!

That’s a nice bike. Want to have one for me and my hubby
It would be so much fun if you pick one up :)
Shocked they are the largest tandem retailer, and in Mississauga! Would have assumed there would be many such retailers on the east and west coast!
Yeah you'd think so! But super glad I am near it so I can consider it a local business! :)
Does the person in the back get much exercise though?

Hey so I cant bike but my partner can. Do you think this could work for both of us? Or you’d say no.

Yes!!
Any other great partner bonding activities you guys recommend??
Great video! Makes me want to tandem ride again.

Won't have the same partner bonding effect as tandem biking, but have you two tried paddle boarding?
I honestly haven't ridden a bike in about a decade, maybe I'll buy one after I'm done school and living in Vancouver
What?! Where did Vancouver come from now?
Nice tandem bike
Omg the bunny ❤
Right?! I just had to showcase the adorableness!
🎉👏👏👏👋👋💓
Please. Don’t call it “biking.” It’s cycling or bicycling. 😀
