  • The Indian Armed Forces are undertaking one of the largest modernisation efforts in the world. At the heart of this transformation is the search for a modern battle rifle, with two strong contenders in the running: the SIG716i, developed by global arms leader SIG Sauer, and the Ugram, India’s own indigenously developed rifle. Each of these rifles represents a unique approach to advancing India’s small arms capabilities, bringing distinct origins and advantages. Join News9 Plus Editor and colleague Deepak Bhadana discuss which one is the best fit and which rifle will prove to be India’s ultimate choice? Anything made by govt psu can’t match the quality of private companies. Sig is a far better weapon. Also remember, making few and in bulk is whole different ball game. Design wise even insas is a great weapon but just manufacturing with right quality control, govt psu could not do it. I am a big supporter of self reliance but it should not be at the cost of soldiers life.

We Indians don't understand that research and development is a continuous process and the first rendering of any project is bound to underperform on many accounts and after making many tweaks and improvements in their next renderings the same project can be worthy enough to deliver more than the optimum results and should never be made discounted for future considerations.

Never understood the need for developing URGAM when OFB could've easily developed a modernized version of SLR like done by USA's DSA Firearms for FN FAL.
OFB's obsession with Long-stroke piston systems doesn't makes sense if it really wants to compete against Weatern Systems.

SIG has been global superpower in firearms. They produce real world rifles that have worked for decades in combat and tough field conditions. It would be insane for the Indian military to accept unproven Indian rifle from a company which has zero prior experience in manufacturing a battle proven rifle (unless someone is getting paid crores in bribes). Why not give the Indian rifle to CRPF and test in other smaller conflicts than to screw the Indian military with another potential INSAS rifle

SIG Saur is known for combat proved firearms. Be it Ukraine, Africa, UNPKF, Taiwan, SIGs have seen combat. Ranging from pistols, PDW/CCW, compact, assault rifles, DMRs, LMGs they are one of top 3 preferred firearms industries even by US for their service firearms. An industry known for innovations and goes toe to toe with H&K. IMO, I'm glad someone here finally understands why american. I'm not completely against our indigenous firearms but clearly if they didn't reach our jawaans then obviously, something through quality perspective things didn't work out as expected. Hence we had to select a better option. Russians are outdated, chinese can't be trusted, germans refuse to sell anything above MP5, israelis have provided enough and belgians are simply overpriced. UGRAM may need to go through many more tests. Until then, 716 is a good, effective and lethal primary pick.

Long stroke piston heavier recoil. Cleaner then di of sig but best system is short stroke system.
Sub par quality of parts by Indian government industry quality of parts have always been questionable. Bad repo and corruption of these psu can not be just disappeared.
      No mlock.
      Heavier.
Biggest flaw no plans for optics and accessories to make a battle rifle accurate and deadly to 800-1000 yards. Because all the buzz about these battle rifles in usa sig spear and our ugram is to have a 308 rifle that can shoot to mid to long ranges because gwot shown 5.56 has draw backs and 7.62x39 has drawbacks. It's just a gimmick. Ak 47 is ok and our country has no problem of less soldiers our tactics is fucking USSR 1970 to 1990 tactics throw enough soldiers at threat encircle them and have special forces contacted eventually it will get neutralized the catch soldiers will die but no problem we got enough to replace . Nothing will change 😢. Our soldiers regular ones are still in 90s . Most conflicts they will face with outdated tools.
