    They both look very close to each other that you can't really go wrong with either, but I do think the Amiga version sounds better and as for the visuals, they look slightly different to each other, not really better or worse as such, just different.
    Also, the Acorn version was released a few years later so it could have been better but then the Amiga version likely could have been better if released in 91 as it was mostly in the early 90's when developers really got the hang of the Amiga hardware.

    i'm glad I never wasted money on Archimedes, Amiga if so much cheaper and yet actually outperforms it here by a slight margin. i love the Amiga

      And Commodore went bankrupt because the A500 was too cheap and left too little margin to spend working on the next generation. ROTFL

      @TheArchimedesRules Rasterman is just software isn't it? Normal per scaline colour swapping tricks. And you have 256 colour mode anyway? Does God's have a really crazy amount of colours?

      @@Archimedes75009 Overall the Amiga was much better value and that matters when it comes to game support but as for Commodore, they went bankrupt because of bad management and now upgrading the Amiga enough and by the time they did, it was too little too late.
      The A1200 should have come out around 1990 with 8 channel sound chip, better capabilities with visuals, the cpu would have been fine if it was paired with fast ram and double capacity floppy drive.
      It likely would have bumped up the price a bit, at least in the short term it might have helped keep the Amiga in the game.

    The Amiga uses dual playfield with only 8 colours for the background (blocks) and 7 colours for some sprites.
    4 attached hardware sprites (15 colours + transparent) are combined to create Pacman himself.
    The Archimedes version uses a chunky 16 colour mode, which means each pixel displayed can be any colour among a choice of 16, and of course that includes the background blocks : that's twice the number of colours in the Amiga version.
    No surprise all in all the Archimedes version looks nicer, for sure.

    Also :
    On the Archie : bigger pacman main character and bigger ghosts too (ridiculously narrow on the Amiga because of the hardware sprites limitations) ; the small pills have a shadow (none on the Amiga) ; ghosts have correct clipping when they exit the playing area in the Archimedes version, when on the Amiga they entirely disappear, they are not clipped if they exit North, East or South.
    Anyway this game could be in 256 colours on the Archimedes, and still run at 50 fps with tunes on 4 channels + sound effects on the other 4 channels (yes, the Archie has 8 hardware channels, not 4).
    It is one of my projects : to see on the Archie a Pacmania game really using its power, and not an Amiga port.
    The Archie had too many non-or-too-slightly-enhanced ports from the inferior Amiga, exactly like the Amiga had too many non-or-too-slightly-enhanced ports from the inferior Atari ST.

      Zarchos THE ONLY FACTS IN 2D GAMES ARE THAT AMIGA HAD INSPIRED HARDWARE BUT ARCHIMEDES, HAD NEARLY NOT HARDWARE. THATS THE REASON WHICH IS VERY DIFFICULT TO ACHIVE SILKY SMOOTH SCROLLING IN FAST & DEMANDING REAL PARALLAX 2D GAMES. THAT'S THE FACT :-)

    Interestingly, the one and only hardware sprite the Archimedes has could have been used to add some colours to the main Pacman character.
    There's no more than a couple of games which use that on the Archie, demonstrating how the games programmers have always worked on the software side of this Archie, and never ventured into the usage of its hardware guts.

    D) SCROLLING IS REALLY VERY NICE BUT UNFORTUNATELY MY "SCREEN RECORDER" DONT SHOW IT. SO,DONT TAKE IT SERIOUS (I MEAN,THE SCROLLING)

      How does the overscan work? Do you have to set your display to a certain setting to display it correctly?

I USE TO STRETCH WITH NO BORDERS 16:9 ALL SOFTWARE. BUT ANYWAY PACMANIA'S ""FULL OVERSCAN"" FILL ALL THE AMIGA LOW RESOLUTION PIXELS, SO ITS LIKE THE REAL THING EXCEPT 16:9 AND YOU DONT HAVE A REAL CRT (LCD LED PLASMA) (WITH ONLY SOME FILTERS)

I HAD A SONY TRINITRON WHICH HAD MORE PIXELS THAN IN GENERAL CHEAP & MEDIUM RANGE ORDINATY CRTs. SO I LOST LESSER PIXELS THAN CHEAP TVs. AGAIN, IT DEPENDS FROM THE CRT TV YOU HAVE. I PLAYED LIKE A MANIAC PACMANIA IN AMIGA. AND OF COURSE, IN AMIGA ALL OVERSCAN PIXELS USED . NOT THE SLIGHTEST BORDER. THIS IS THE EXACTLY ""FULL OVERSCAN"".     Τα sprites στον Archie είναι δουλεμένα και χρωματισμένα από την αρχή.
    Το ίδιο και για τις ενδιάμεσες animated σκηνές.
    Ο ήχος έχει διαφορές που οφείλονται στα τσιπάκια ήχου του κάθε υπολογιστή.
    Τα γραφικά του background μου φαίνονται ίδια και στα δύο μηχανήματα.
    Ευχτυχώς για τον Archie δεν είναι μια τεμπέλικη μεταφορά από την Amiga.

    for me having 16 colors for background and another 16 for sprites, make the possibilities to have 32 colors on screen (even if in fact it's a little less) .
    And there is more color on screen than archi ,because it's impossible to have a 50fps game in mode 13(256 colors) for action games, even pacman .
    And how many RAM you need for the two versions ??

      Bad luck as on the Amiga it is 8 colours for the background (the blocks) as detailed on codetapper. This is a hardware limitation of dual playfield (8 colours for background, and 7 colours for foreground).
      It is even more visible for Chuck Rocks where the Archie version looks much nicer. It is admited on eab by an honest Amiga owner, on this page : eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=86674&page=26 after Galahad the thief and liar talked BS about the Archie, as usual (in the previous page).

    So lets get one thing right - The Amiga was not (never was) a 16 bit machine. The 68000 is a 32 bit processor. AmigaOS was 32 bit right from the start.

      @@petsasjim1 Its a 68000 machine which has 32 bit internal logic, but its on a 16 bit bus. The operating system was 32 bit right from the beginning. So yes, it is a kind of a hybrid, but the OS being 32 bit made it more modern than most people would think. Windows 3.1 was 16 bit and that was released in the 90s - which just shows how behind the times it was.
      I think Zorro 3 was the first fully 32 bit Amiga Bus, on the Amiga 3000 - I had one in 1990.

      @@iangodfrey4518 I think the best way to define it is the memory width as that is what bottlenecks all processors. The Amiga has 16 bit memory and everything accesses 16 bits per cycle. In the PC engine and SNES (16 bit CPU and 8 bit bus) the VDP can but not the CPU. In the Mega Drive also with a 68K all access is also 16 bits per cycle.

    I've just read on a forum that on the Amiga Pacmania supposedly has 32 colours, but as always on the Amiga it's all wrong again : the devil hides in the details : it's 16 colours for the background (4 bitplanes), and 16 colours for Pacman ; and not at all 32 possible colours for each pixel. It seems the weak copros of the Amiga can't handle more than 4 bitplanes for this kind of game where the whole screen has to scroll in each direction. Ah ah ah.
    So as I already wrote, on the Archie version using the hardware sprite to add 3 or 4 colours per line, with a palette change on each scanline (the hardware cursor has its own palette from 4096 colours), would give the same result to the Pacman character (or even better, more colourful : do the maths).

      +Zarchos Comparing the two computers by just one game is wrong from the begining.
      Amiga has hardware sprites (own palette) with 64 background colors and I speak for 16bit Amiga only.
      You can't compare amiga with its efficient hardware and customs with a cpu based machine.
      I would love to see lionheart on archie too even if it was based uppon cpu and this is not a comparison, just curiosity and a hope for archie users.
      Too bad that there were more games on that platform too.
