Thanks for the great topic! I am 78, been studying Shotokan for 53 years, teaching for 45 of these. You touched on some really key points. Thanks again! Wayne

One way I’ve tried to reduce burnout in the past is to study bunkai. There are so many kata that it feels like almost endless possibilities for practical self defense training. Taking application from the kata and relating it through self defense drills with a partner is always fun and gives students a chance to train the kata in the way I feel was originally intended. The eureka-like moment when you discover practical application for a movement you originally thought to be obscure is always a good time. It exercises my ADHD brain too! Doing the same movements over and over again to perfect the technique certainly has its place but feels rather useless after a while when you don’t see the other side (the why behind the what) in your training. Any thoughts?

Reframing your technique or training can definitely help with preventing burnout. Thanks for sharing!
