I liked what I heard from the NPR interview today. The voice of a classic crooner but the mystique of a luchador. However, nothing prepared me for this video. It subverted the familiar while still remaining a loving homage.
It's pure art. A thing all its own. Something that'll be talked about for years to come. A perfect compliment to a masked cowboy.

He's not just mourning the loss of the relationship but something specific to it -- the lyrics "I had to whisper
/ Because you liked it that way" + the way the shot at 1:15 makes me think that he was in love with this man and it was reciprocated but the other man was in the closet and not open about the relationship. "Cross my heart and hope to die" is a phrase that kids use when they're promising to keep an especially intimate secret to a friend.
I think it's about a man who was in a relationship with a closeted partner who eventually left him because he couldn't handle the stress of it -- "You were crying / They don't cry when we go" -- and now the singer's all alone not just because he's been abandoned but because he's STILL carrying this other man's secrets, a secret that he's promised to keep and he will but at the sake of his own feelings. He wants to be taken back to a time when they were together, even as he confirms through the lyrics that this was not a great time for either of them, because it's still better than what he has now.

This voice is not what I expect EVERY TIME I click on his videos.like I know it's coming, I know what he sounds like, but then he starts and I'm blown away more and more every time. His sound is NOT today's sound. He takes it back to country western and mixes in little hints of icons influence here and there. I get chills every time.

I think thats the influence that gets overlooked the most. The Elvis & old-school country vibe, Texas Shuffle, etc, those r the obvious, but Peck is delivering the goods with some 80’s alternative music peppered in as well. The Smiths, Simple Minds, the Church, the musical drama & vocal range of these groups.

The part where he sing "cross my heart now I hope to .." and stop from say his wish to death to take it to a scene of him preparing for a dance and then dance is so reassuring? Like after it he return to singing the complete lyrics but that cut realy is beautiful and peaceful. The visuals of this song is as beautiful as the song it self
