I will give a detailed explanation about what's going on with the forest ground. It's what happens when trees grow on top of very rocky ground and are blown by strong winds. The roots grow only along the surface because they can't penetrate the rocky layer. When the wind blows hard enough, the trees move and the large tree roots are uplifted, bringing the rest of the soil at the surface with it which is held together by the thousands of small, capillary-like roots of the trees, plants and moss. You won't see that sort of thing in areas where the tree roots penetrate deep underground, allowing for more stable trees.
