I bought a prop katana, made from foam. It's black with silver lining the bottom of the blade but for the cosplay I'm doing i need the blade to be complete silver. Would I need to put a primer over the previous paint before I go over it with silver?
You can! Because the paint will stick to the primer a lot better than the finished piece. However, primer from a can will crack. If it’s really smooth, you could plastidip it black first, then put the silver on top of that. That way the paint will be on a more flexible surface and wouldn’t crack too much if it bends a certain way. Sadly, any primer or paint from a can tends to have a hardener in it that will crack if bent too far.
My only criticism is, I just kind of wish the scabbard was a little more rounded. I don't know what complications/added difficulty this adds, but to the eye, it seems off being so rectangle/square.
That’s totally valid! Thanks for the feedback. I have, in the past tried to make it more round by using a thicker block to sand down, but then came out super lumpy and uneven and I wasn’t happy with the end product. But, no harm in trying it again and seeing if I succeed on the next sword! The next Zoro video, I’ll try and make the scabbard more round.
@@LockProps Again, since I don't do these things, I have no idea what complications it can add. But maybe there is a way to do it. Just my opinion, but I think you did an amazing job regardless :D
@@joehjort243 Sorry, still trying to understand what you’re asking, but if you’re saying just using 8mm instead of 10mm, so you don’t have to buy both. Then yeah, you can just get by with one of those sheets. Let me know if you have more questions, I’ll be here.
The heat gun closes the pores on the foam, so you won't get as smooth of a finish if you don't heat treat the foam. Luckily heat guns aren't too expensive, so might be worth saving up a little and getting one! Unfortunately I haven't had good luck using a hair dryer. I link to a heat gun in the video description and it's currently $28.99 with a 10% coupon on Amazon.
The instructions are super clear and the sword turned out amazing, you did a great job with this!

@@LockProps ooh okay thank you so much!! Do you recommend a metallic/shiny silver paint to use? (I don't own an airbrush)

@@joehjort243 Which part of the video are you referring to? Just wanted to make sure I answer you correctly 😁
@@LockProps both ad the 8 mm and 10 mm EVA foam

@@LockProps np. It just if I could use two 5 mm for a 10. And the same with two 4 for a 8. Hope that made it bit more clear😊
@@joehjort243 Oh! Yes, absolutely you can! Just make sure you have enough adhesive to glue everything together!
Is it critical to use a heat gun? I don't have one 😅
